Current Inefficiencies In The Juvenile Justice System: Evidence-Based Solutions, Janarie Johann Prince Dec 2025

Current Inefficiencies In The Juvenile Justice System: Evidence-Based Solutions, Janarie Johann Prince

Arkansas Liberal Arts and Humanities Day

The juvenile justice system was designed to rehabilitate youth offenders rather than punish them, but inefficiencies continue to hinder this goal. This research examines how institutional practices contribute to the unequal treatment of juveniles based on socioeconomic factors by analyzing scholarly literature, case studies, and data from government reports. The presentation highlights how juveniles are arrested, charged, and sentenced. It also explores how stereotypes influence perceptions of delinquency and how over-criminalization of behaviors has harmed efforts to rehabilitate juveniles and reduce recidivism. The proposed solutions include evidence-based practices like cognitive-behavioral therapy to improve educational opportunities and help incarcerated youth keep …

Past Gang Membership, Posttraumatic Experiences, And Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress, Robert K. Johns

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress, or PITS, is an area of study that needs more scholarly attention. The lack of research about this mental health leads to an ineffectiveness of traditional interventions, as they fail to address the needs of people with former criminal affiliations, causing them to experience negative psychological, physical, and social health outcomes. As such this study seeks to explore, via a hermeneutic phenomenological research design- a qualitative approach that will allow this researcher to understand the lived experiences and explore PITS in the lives of past gang members and the manifestation of PITS as a prevalent and underdiagnosed …

Criminalizing Difference: An Intersectional Analysis Of Disability In The Criminal Justice System, Rowan Eisleman

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This research addresses the central question: How do individuals with disabilities intersect with the criminal justice system, and what systemic factors contribute to their overrepresentation and victimization? Despite over 61 million Americans having disabilities, there exists a significant gap in comprehensive scholarship examining disability-criminal justice intersections, particularly regarding how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience unique vulnerabilities as both offenders and victims. This study contributes to disability studies and criminology by providing a comprehensive intersectional analysis examining how disability compounds with race and gender to create compounded marginalization. This study conducted a comprehensive literature review, analyzing government statistics from …

The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Reducing Internet Crimes Against Children, Malyssa Shaw Dec 2025

The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Reducing Internet Crimes Against Children, Malyssa Shaw

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

When generative artificial intelligence (AI) first surfaced and broke into the public sphere, my immediate concern was in its development, implementation, and harmful applications. I was not surprised when deepfake technology rapidly advanced alongside these new developments and impacted women and children worldwide. Disproportionately, they have been made victims of intimate media forgery as early as the 1990s, with an unprecedented uptick in recent years as a direct result of these developments. In response, I wrote "Deepfake, Real Harm: Protecting Children in the Age of AI", analyzing data specifically regarding child sexual abuse material (CSAM) created with artificial intelligence while …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

General-education teachers often feel unprepared to support students with Emotional and Behavior Disorders (EBD), which can foster negative attitudes toward inclusion. Identifying teacher factors that support successful inclusion in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is needed. This quantitative predictive–correlational study tested whether general-education teachers’ Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) knowledge, classroom-management self-efficacy, and years of experience predict attitudes toward including students with EBD. Using Facebook and LinkedIn, 83 teachers volunteered and completed the General Educators’ Attitudes toward Emotional and Behavioral Disorders Questionnaire, the Efficacy for Classroom Management Scale, and the Knowledge of Special Education Law Survey. Multiple linear regression …

Rural Policing In Northern Wisconsin: Will Small-Town Police Officers Stay At Their Current Agency Until Retirement Based On Age And Community Size, Thomas J. Thompson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined the plans of small-town northern Wisconsin police officers to remain at their current agency until retirement, based on age and community size. The hypothesis was that older officers who had been with an agency for a longer period would stay until retirement, while younger officers would be more likely to leave. Younger officers tend to have less buy-in to the community and possibly fewer ties to a specific community. Officers who are older or have been with an agency for a long time have a greater investment in the agency and the community. The study results showed …

Legal Considerations On Predictive Policing Based On Italian ‘Algorithmic Administration’ Principles, Stefano Rossa Dec 2025

Legal Considerations On Predictive Policing Based On Italian ‘Algorithmic Administration’ Principles, Stefano Rossa

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

In Beck’s current risk society, the State is faced with a dilemma. To fail before the risk but to keep the sphere of citizens’ rights intact; or not to fail but to restrict fundamental rights? This payoff turns out to be the main issue that juridical reflections on the use of predictive technology tools in the public sector must consider. Policing is an administrative function that is mainly composed of acts of a preventive nature. By using ICT, it is possible to employ AI systems with a very high rate of certainty to ‘predict’ future crime scene. But is it …

From Function To Culture: Exploring Senior-Centered Design Principles In Korean Context, Sujin Song, Miso Kim, Min Ju Kang, Ye In An, Soojin Jun

IASDR Conference Series

South Korea, as the fastest-aging country in the world, occupies a critical position in aging research. Designing for older adults requires a multidimensional understanding; however, existing studies on design principles for aging have tended to adopt functionalist approaches focused primarily on physical and cognitive decline. In response, this study proposes design principles that center on values systems rather than offering directly prescriptive or procedural guidance. Specifically, we introduce culturally responsive principles grounded in Korea’s unique socio cultural context. Drawing on a co-design workshop with Korean older adults and caregivers, our analysis engages narratives through the lenses of Korea’s rapid industrialization, …

Fundamental Fairness Guides The Supreme Court's Criminal Justice Decisions In The 2024-2025 Term, Sharon R. Fairley Dec 2025

Fundamental Fairness Guides The Supreme Court's Criminal Justice Decisions In The 2024-2025 Term, Sharon R. Fairley

ConLawNOW

During the 2024-2025 term, the Supreme Court decided fifteen cases related to the criminal justice system. These cases were brought by criminal defendants seeking post-conviction relief and civil litigants seeking redress for governmental harms arising out of criminal processes. Remarkably, two-thirds of the cases resulted in decisions favoring defendants or civil litigants opposing the government. This Article argues that the pro-defendant outcomes from this term are consistent with a recent trend in the Court’s decisions favoring defendants in these types of cases. The pro-defendant outcomes from the 2024-2025 term generally resulted from the less conservative justices aligning with the liberal …
