All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Deafness is described as the complete loss of hearing, and the different degrees of hearing loss include mild, moderate, or severe or profound. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one in eight people ages 12 or older have hearing loss in both ears. More than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents. Hearing loss can affect numerous areas of development that impact different areas of life such as academic, social, and emotional skills. This paper discusses how hearing loss affects deaf and hard of hearing people and includes strategies that can be implemented to …
English Language Learners’ Perceptions And Experiences Using Multimodal Tools To Prepare And Deliver Video Presentations Of Digital Portfolios, Mara M. Marino
English Language Learners’ Perceptions And Experiences Using Multimodal Tools To Prepare And Deliver Video Presentations Of Digital Portfolios, Mara M. Marino
Theses and Dissertations
With the increase in digital literacies in schools and the rise in the number of English language learners (ELLs) in US colleges, it is important to examine the affordances of multimodality as it relates to students’ digital literacy practices while advocating for this diverse population. Using a multiliteracies framework, this qualitative action research study made multimodal tools available to ELLs for the preparation and delivery of video presentations of digital portfolios in a higher education English course. The participants in this study were six ELLs from a small private college. The primary research question and two sub-questions were answered using …

Blending Heritage And Innovation: A Practical Study Of How Gen Z Engages With Egyptian Arts And Crafts To Foster Sustainable And Culturally Significant Fashion, Noha Fawzy Aboelros Ph.D, Yara Mostafa Mokhtar
Arts and Design
Egyptian culture features a rich history in arts, crafts, and various traditions, influenced by historical encounters and a range of geographical backgrounds. However, this cultural wealth is facing a serious challenge: surveys indicate that many of Generation Z in Egypt are unaware of its deep meanings and historical significance. This research seeks to address this issue by investigating how new designers can reinterpret cultural aspects for a modern audience, thus promoting both appreciation and preservation. Moreover, examining the creative processes of emerging fashion designers who develop clothing collections inspired by Egyptian culture from regions like Siwa, Sinai, Old Cairo, and …
The Effects Of Melanism On Leopard Solitary Behavior, Rachel Ullven
The Effects Of Melanism On Leopard Solitary Behavior, Rachel Ullven
Theses & ETDs
Both melanism and communicative markings have been well-examined for their adaptive value. However, investigation of communicative markings using melanism to represent a loss of those markings is far too rare in existing literature for its research potential. One such species where melanism overrides what are thought to be communicative markings is the leopard (Panthera pardus). Since the dangerous, elusive, and solitary nature of the leopard has made it difficult to study their social behavior, proxies such as tracking collars or camera traps have been used in an attempt to gain insight into their behavior and social organization. By using sighting …

Small-Scale Green Infrastructure In Urban Networks - Trinity Presbyterian Church As A Pilot Project, Selvana Getsy -
Small-Scale Green Infrastructure In Urban Networks - Trinity Presbyterian Church As A Pilot Project, Selvana Getsy -
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Rapid urbanization and increasing impervious cover in cities like those within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have intensified flooding, heat, erosion, and declining ecological quality. Although large-scale green infrastructure (GI) interventions are widely recognized as solutions to these issues, small-scale institutional landscapes remain a neglected yet powerful component of urban GI networks. This study functions as a pilot/demonstration project to evaluate the potential of small-scale GI interventions at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Plano, Texas. The goals are to reduce stormwater runoff, provide ecological and microclimatic improvements, increase community engagement, biodiversity enhancement, and environmental awareness in public institutional settings.
The study utilizes a …

Analysis Of Queerness And Race In Black Lightning And Dctv Femslash, Rachel Marks
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
In this dissertation, I research issues of queer representation and race in the CW network’s DC television (DCTV) shows’ fandom by investigating femslash ships, or the fan pairing of female characters. To do this, I compare the femslash ship of the characters Anissa Pierce and Grace Choi (ThunderGrace), a canon multiracial couple from the CW television show Black Lightning, to three other DCTV femslash pairings: the characters Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe (Avalance), a canon white couple from the television show DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the characters Alex Danvers and Kelly Olsen (Dansen), a canon multiracial couple from …

Open Educational Resources For and As Assessment
The high cost of course materials is a barrier for many students, and traditional assessments often fail to inspire engagement. To address these challenges, NC State University Libraries promotes open course materials and open-enabled practices. Since 2014, the Alt-Textbook Project has helped faculty incorporate Open Educational Resources (OER) into their syllabi, reducing textbook costs and supporting innovative educational approaches. This effort was enhanced with the Open Pedagogy Incubator, a multi- semester program bringing together librarians and interdisciplinary faculty to redesign courses around open- pedagogical practices. Dr. McKenney, an incubator participant, redesigned her advanced undergraduate course on Applied Ecology (AEC 400) …
A Moonshot In An Uncertain Time, Griffin Thomas Brown
A Moonshot In An Uncertain Time, Griffin Thomas Brown
Communication 300 Papers
This is a rhetorical analysis of John F. Kennedy’s speech at Rice University given on September 12th, 1962. This speech was chosen because of its cultural and temporal significance, and it has been analyzed in a myriad of ways according to the surrounding texts within the COMM 300 framework. The paper contains a synopsis of the rhetorical situation at the time, as well as an analysis of the speech using the 5 canons, symbolic convergence theory, and visual perspectives. Kennedy’s speech is deconstructed, and his juxtaposition of pride and careful optimism is studied intently below. In addition, Kennedy’s argument surrounding …
The Impact Of Generative Ai On Undergraduate Students During The Scenic Design Process, Tetta M. Askeland
The Impact Of Generative Ai On Undergraduate Students During The Scenic Design Process, Tetta M. Askeland
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The landscape of theatre education is rapidly evolving as students immersed in technology are entering education struggling with traditional artistic techniques while gravitating toward digital tools. This pre-experimental one-shot case study investigated the impact of Adobe Firefly on undergraduate theatrical design students' self-perception of their visual communication skills during the scenic design research process.
Thirty-four undergraduate students from six Midwestern universities participated in a three-phase study utilizing Teresa M. Amabile's Componential Theory of Creativity as the theoretical framework. Participants completed traditional scenic design projects for Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, engaged in an Adobe Firefly intervention module, and subsequently completed …

Examining Mental And Sexual Health Themes In Latina Youth Zines: A Multi-Modal Content Analysis, Jenn M. Lilly, D'Andrah Almanzar, Doreen Dorcely, Luisa Fernanda Sandoval Cortes, Ana Iris Murcia
Social Service Faculty Publications
Multiple, convergent risk factors place Latina youth at disproportionate risk for mental
and sexual health issues. Yet, their firsthand perspectives and experiential knowledge of
how to navigate mental and sexual health challenges is rarely the subject of scholarly
inquiry. This article presents a multi-modal content analysis of themes and messages
conveyed by two digital zines created by Latina young adults for Latina teens through an
arts-based research project. In this arts-based research, zines functioned as both data and
method, capturing Latina youth’s nuanced perspectives and lived experiences of mental
and sexual health. We identified six themes in their works—acknowledging and …

The Impact Of Social Media Influencers On Contemporary Art Trends - A Comprehensive Analysis, Babette Meng
MA Theses
Social media have revolutionized the contemporary art market, how artists promote their work, how collectors initially find pieces, and how art is valued and sold. This study investigates the effects of social media on the art industry using a mixed methods approach consisting of qualitative case studies enabled by thematic analysis and quantitative survey with statistical correlation analysis. Key findings from this paper show that with social media, the artist's visibility is vastly increased, direct-to-collector sales are promoted, and dependence on traditional galleries is reduced. The study considers the position of art influencers in the process of art promotion, which …

Visual Legal Rhetoric In The Age Of Generative Ai And Deepfakes: Renaissance Or Dark Ages?, Michael D. Murray
Visual Legal Rhetoric In The Age Of Generative Ai And Deepfakes: Renaissance Or Dark Ages?, Michael D. Murray
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
The paradoxical development of visual generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, simultaneously signals a renaissance and a potential dark age in visual rhetoric and communication. On the one hand, these tools democratize the creation of visual content, empowering attorneys and others to become artists and illustrators of their legal communications without needing to learn how to draw. These AI systems can simplify complex legal concepts, bridge language barriers, and enhance advocacy. But on the other hand, the proliferation of deepfakes presents significant challenges for visual rhetoric. Deepfakes can quickly and easily create realistic but …

A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of English Picture Book Covers In Attracting Reading Interest Among Chinese Young Learners : A Case Study Of Caldecott Award Winners, Mengting Li, Atipat Boonmoh
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study used multimodal discourse analysis (mda) to examine how images in English picture books attract young readers. Using Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar, the study analyzes Caldecott Award-winning book covers to understand how meaning is conveyed and how multimodal resources engage children in reading. The research monitored 25 young learners aged 5–7 using English picture books for 10 weeks. The three most and least favorite books were identified and analyzed for representational, interactive, and compositional meaning. The study found that visual appeal, engaging characters, humor and other elements are key elements in attracting young readers. The findings provide …
How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey
How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey
Emory Law Journal
Debates about artificial intelligence (AI) tend to swing between the optimistic and the apocalyptic. I propose a less binary approach that frames conversations about AI from the perspectives of theories of art and creativity. Whether we agree that AI is artificial or intelligent, whether it should be constrained or liberated, we cannot deny its influence on literary, artistic, and innovative production. AI may be described as simply a new tool to produce art and science, like the camera or the microscope, or it may transform and reshape art and science, the way the internet transformed global communication. Either way, these …

“The essence of good design is revealing the invisible structure that holds everything together, allowing us to see beauty in strength." - Frank Lloyd Wright This Thesis investigates the transposition of architectural principles into ceramic art, drawing inspiration from Western New York’s late 19th century and early 20th century architectural and craft traditions. Through an exploration of symmetry and proportion, surface texture, materiality, and the dynamic interplay between light and shadow, this research examines how architecture influences not only the physical aesthetics of ceramic art, but also its atmospheric and emotional presence. Recognizing how form is never static but continuously …

You Go, I Will Wait, Rasim Bayramov
Theses and Dissertations
On the other side of the coast, a hand is waiting. On the other side of the shore, someone is waiting for you to come. This space between you and them is an asymptote. The more you wait, the colder the pan is to the hand. But the salt of the sea will cover and warm your hand. There’s much to play with while you wait. The destination is only a promise, a figure disillusioned. Waiting spaces are enchantingly altering
in their premise. A bureaucratic fantasy with no avail and no ending. Systematically accumulated levels of power and control lies …

Civic Conservation Workshop: A User Manual For Creating A Makerspace Dedicated To Historic Preservation, Building Repair, And Civic Engagement, Madeleine Bean
Theses and Dissertations
Research Abstract:
Democracy depends on citizens’ participation at all levels, from local to national; moreover, engagement in one’s community is directly correlated with greater reported feelings of happiness and trust (Cox et al., 2021). This research examines how makerspaces can act as civic hubs that promote inclusive community interaction, facilitate the exchange of cultural and skills-based knowledge, encourage civic discourse, and serve as sites for political engagement through the provision of tools and resources that focus on historic home repair/preservation and craft-based trades. Specifically, this study proposes the development and design of a preservation-focused makerspace in Jackson Ward, a historically …

Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez
Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez
UF Law Faculty Publications
Consumers often do not read the contracts they sign. They know the basic terms of the deal and take the risk that it is enough to avoid being sued for breach. Even sophisticated businesspeople often do not read the documents they sign; they rely on their attorneys to tell them what they need to know. If the sole purpose of documenting a contract is to protect the party that has the financial resources and the leverage to hire an attorney to draft it, then the attorney doesn’t do their client a disservice by focusing solely on the contract’s enforceability. A …

Outside The Workshop: Alternative Spaces Of U.S. Printmaking, 1935–1977, Michelle Donnelly
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The studio, the land, the camp, and the home are vital locations of print production. Yet scholars have overwhelmingly focused on prints made in the workshop, or an institutional facility stocked with specialized equipment and overseen by “master printers.” This dissertation investigates how women artists and artists of color expanded the parameters of printmaking outside the traditional site of the workshop from 1935 to 1977 in the United States. Each spatially organized chapter centers on one artist: David Hammons, Sari Dienes, Matsusaburo “George” Hibi, and Ruth Asawa. All four artists practiced what I call emplaced printmaking: an engagement with the …

Performance Of Standard Medical Mllms On Ecg Image Data, Prisha Anil
Masters Theses
This work presents a structured benchmarking study of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) applied to electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation tasks. We evaluate three representative architectures: MedGemma, HuatuoGPT-Vision, and LLaVA-Med, across progressive experimental stages involving text-only structured prompt normalization, text–image fusion with ECG plots, and full multimodal fusion incorporating time-series signals. A standardized five-section cardiology prompt was designed to enforce consistent output structure and SCP-code alignment, enabling reproducible metric computation across models. Quantitative evaluation using BERTScore, token-level F1, and diagnostic accuracy demonstrates that HuatuoGPT-Vision achieves the highest semantic and diagnostic alignment, while MedGemma exhibits superior formatting stability and reproducibility. In contrast, LLaVA-Med …
