Reflective Correspondences: Letter Writing As A Tool For Design Education, Ana Cecilia Schettino, Rogerio Camara
Reflective Correspondences: Letter Writing As A Tool For Design Education, Ana Cecilia Schettino, Rogerio Camara
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper discusses the results and content of letters written by students, as the final assignment in a design theory class. The proposal involved using correspondence as a method of reflection. The aim was to explore the pedagogical potential of letter writing to foster reflective learning in design, as well as to examine epistolary writing as an activity that promotes analytical thinking and a deeper understanding of design as both a practice and a discipline. Students were challenged to compose letters addressed to someone (living or deceased), something, or somewhere – in the past, present, or even the future – …

Algorithmic-Narrative Machine. Micro-History Of A Dialogic-Constructionist Design Lab, Francesco Monterosso
Learn X Design Conference Series
This contribution explores the interplay between design culture and constructionist pedagogy, highlighting how practices based on making, tinkering, and learning by doing can foster creative, collaborative, reflective, and critical learning in increasingly interconnected educational contexts. Following in the footsteps of the work and research carried out by Papert, Stager, and other scholars, it emphasizes the necessity of an inclusive, transdisciplinary approach in line with the challenges posed by the future of design education. After a brief theoretical overview—citing “designerly ways of knowing” and underscoring the importance of a dialogic, project-based epistemology—the paper presents an educational-design experience developed within the Inter/Abit/Azione …

Creating Landscapes: Sustainable Insights Through Art-Based Methods, Karolina Uggla, Andrea Hvistendahl
Learn X Design Conference Series
The interactive, art-based workshop concept Creating Landscapes was piloted twice in November 2024. The workshop invites participants to critically engage with questions of sustainability and materiality through hands-on interaction with discarded objects, addressing the complexity of planetary and societal resources and life in a concrete way. The workshop starts from how we interact with material artefacts and how to create new landscapes and see things differently. Following the initial implementations, we – the designers and facilitators – collected participant feedback to inform future iterations. This case study provides a description of the workshop idea, its implementation process, and preliminary insights, …

Integrated Design For Museums And Marginal Areas: Exhibit, Graphic And Interaction Design, Lucilla Calogero, Emanuela Bonini Lessing, Gabriele Toneguzzi
Learn X Design Conference Series
The case study delves into the practices and methodologies employed within CarniaMusei, a network of about 40 small museums located in a mountainous area of 1200 km² in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeastern Italy. The project aims to intertwine design education with cultural heritage preservation in a marginalized territory. The contribution illustrates how exhibition design, visual communication and interaction design are combined to create dynamic, multifunctional spaces that serve as cultural, social, and educational hubs. By involving local stakeholders, students, and educators in participatory processes, the outcomes promote inclusivity, sustainability, and adaptability – core principles that align with the …

Research Colloquium
Background: Cervical carcinoma continues to exert a disproportionate burden on Hispanic women within the United States, notably in jurisdictions such as Texas, where individuals of Hispanic descent constitute more than 40% of the demographic populace. Notwithstanding progress in screening methodologies and preventive measures, considerable disparities persist in incidence rates, mortality figures, and survival outcomes when assessed through the lens of racial and ethnic stratifications.
Objective: To examine and visually communicate disparities in cervical cancer burden among Hispanic women through a combination of national survival data and Texas state-level incidence and mortality statistics.
Methods: Publicly accessible datasets were employed from the …

Students' Perceptions Of Generative Ai Image Tools In Design Education: Insights From Architectural Education, Michelle Boyoung Huh, Marjan Miri, Torrey Tracy
Architecture Faculty Publications and Presentations
The rapid emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has sparked growing interest across educational disciplines, reshaping how knowledge is produced, represented, and assessed. While recent research has increasingly explored the implications of text-based tools such as ChatGPT in education, far less attention has been paid to image-based GenAI tools-despite their particular relevance to fields grounded in visual communication and creative exploration, such as architecture and design. These disciplines raise distinct pedagogical and ethical questions, given their reliance on iteration, authorship, and visual representation as core elements of learning and practice. This exploratory study investigates how architecture and interior architecture students …

Background/objectives: Adolescence is a sensitive developmental window shaped by both vulnerabilities and adaptive potential. From an evolutionary standpoint, mental health difficulties in this period may represent functional responses to environmental stressors rather than mere dysfunctions. Despite increasing interest, integrative models capturing the dynamic interplay of risk and protective factors in adolescent mental health remain limited. This study presents a holistic, multi-level framework grounded in ecological and evolutionary theories to improve understanding and intervention strategies.
Methods: A two-round Delphi method was used to develop and validate the framework. Twelve experts in adolescent mental health evaluated a preliminary draft derived from the …

Comics, as a medium for conveying ideas and concepts through imagery, integrate textual and visual elements to construct meaning and communicate messages effectively. Their distinctive visual communication enables the delivery of complex social issues in an accessible manner through characters, panels, layouts, and visual representations of sound and dialogue. This study analyzes the Tahilalats comic (2024 edition), which incorporates the hashtag #bersamastopjudol as part of a visual campaign against online gambling addiction. The narrative is presented entirely through images without verbal language. The research applies Primadi Tabrani’s Wimba theory to decode visual language and Roland Barthes’ semiotics to interpret symbolic …
