Is Ai Bias In Journalism Inherently Bad? Relationship Between Bias, Objectivity, And Meaning In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Gregory Gondwe
Is Ai Bias In Journalism Inherently Bad? Relationship Between Bias, Objectivity, And Meaning In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Gregory Gondwe
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism has led to debates about the impact of AI bias, with critics arguing that AI systems perpetuate societal stereotypes and inequalities. Critics argue that AI systems, influenced by historical data and human biases, may exacerbate stereotypes, marginalize underrepresented voices, and skew news coverage, thereby reinforcing societal inequalities. However, this article contends that bias, while often considered detrimental, is an inherent aspect of journalism that has shaped news production for centuries. Drawing on a historical perspective, the article explores the relationship between bias and journalistic storytelling, arguing that bias can, if managed ethically, …
Legacy Admissions: A Devil's Advocacy Approach, Georgia Pirie
Legacy Admissions: A Devil's Advocacy Approach, Georgia Pirie
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This paper explores the topic of legacy admissions as it relates to college access and equity in American higher education. A devil’s advocate approach is used to explore the often-ignored positive attributes of legacy admissions. This first section of this paper will defend the practice of legacy admissions by using a few different perspectives. First, I explore how criticism of legacy admissions is invalid because the process will eventually not be a barrier for students. Second, I will explore themes surrounding the stance of how legacy admissions play a positive role in the college search process for students. Finally, I …
The Shape(S) Of Jazz To Come. Jazz Studies, Interpretation, Theory And Education Research Project, Ricardo Pinheiro
The Shape(S) Of Jazz To Come. Jazz Studies, Interpretation, Theory And Education Research Project, Ricardo Pinheiro
The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research
Jazz Studies: interpretation, theory and education is a research project developed at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, Polytechnic University of Lisbon, that involved the collaboration between the Jazz and Composition Departments. The focus of the project coordinated by Ricardo Pinheiro (with the collaboration of Carlos Caires and Carlos Marecos) was to rethink artistic research outputs in the field of jazz studies, questioning the hegemony of the current musicological paradigm (Cook, 2014; Pinheiro and Caires 2019; Pinheiro, Caires and Neto 2024), and to explore the broad academic, scientific and artistic scope that this field can provide.
Actors, Access, Markets, And Values Involved In Oil Palm Expansion And Peatland Degradation In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Ali Yansyah Abdurrahim, Arya Hadi Dharmawan, Soeryo Adiwibowo, Herry Yogaswara, Meine Van Noordwijk
Actors, Access, Markets, And Values Involved In Oil Palm Expansion And Peatland Degradation In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Ali Yansyah Abdurrahim, Arya Hadi Dharmawan, Soeryo Adiwibowo, Herry Yogaswara, Meine Van Noordwijk
Forest and Society
Despite numerous government regulations aimed at protecting Indonesia’s peatlands and surrounding communities, the rapid conversion of peatlands to oil palm plantations, coupled with associated fires, continues to cause severe environmental degradation and health-threatening haze that extends to neighboring countries. This study examines the political ecology of oil palm expansion and peatland degradation in the Pelang Peat Landscape, Ketapang, West Kalimantan, focusing on the period 2000–2021. By integrating spatial analysis with qualitative methods—including active participation, in-depth interviews, group discussions, and document review—this research uncovers the dynamics of land-use change and access mechanisms. Findings reveal that oil palm expansion has resulted in …
Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller
Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller
Theses and Dissertations
This project proposes a geoinformatics approach for understanding the migration of extended families in historical contexts. It uses full-count longitudinal census data (developed by the Minnesota Population Center) and graph methods to define multi-generational extended family relationships and to model the locational structures of these families as a spatial network. Graph algorithms and mapping methods are used to interrogate these structures as reflections of the patterns of family outmigration and extension over time. The study is based on a set of extended families resident in a 15-county study area in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky in 1870, and their evolution …

Dear Cheri, Chenhao Chang
Dear Cheri, Chenhao Chang
Theses and Dissertations
Dear Cheri is a 43-minute essay diary film that follows my journey toward reconciliation and reconnection after a period of self-imposed isolation from loved ones. The story unfolds as I search for people named Cheri—the same name as the writer of three valentines I stumbled upon in a thrift store. These valentines, written by Cheri in the 1970s and addressed to her parents, hold a deep resonance for me, mirroring my own feelings of isolation as a foreigner in a foreign land and evoking themes of separation and loss. In an attempt to confront these haunting emotions, I embark on …
For Church Or People: The History Of Land Dispute In Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province From The Perspective Of Tana' Ai Community, Desmiwati Desmiwati, Suraya Afiff, Edwin Martin, Surati Surati, Kresno Agus Hendarto, Rini Astuti
Forest and Society
This study employs a political ecology approach to analyze the dynamics of land ownership in Indonesia, focusing on the Tana' Ai community in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara province. We argue that agrarian change is driven by external actors, including private companies that religious institutions and government agencies own. The latter often impose their will on indigenous populations, which can result in land conflicts, marginalization, and uneven capital accumulation. In particular, the church's status as a land use permit holder from the colonial era complicates the Tana' Ai ethnic community's ability to assert its ancestral land rights. To understand this …

Multilevel Peatland Governance: Exploring The Policy Impact Among Local Actors In Shaping Peatland Policy Intervention In Indonesia, Alfajri Alfajri, Helena Varkkey, Patrick O'Reilly, Tengku Adeline Adura
Forest and Society
Indonesia established the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG, now BRGM) in 2016 to address land and forest fire issues through measures to develop and strengthen the implementation of policies to restore some part of the 24 million hectares of the country's damaged peatlands. BRGM was presented as a response to the transboundary haze issue and was applauded globally, with substantial success claimed in delivering changes in local land management behaviours. However, limited detailed analyses have been conducted regarding how the BRGM programme is implemented. Employing concepts drawn from work exploring multilevel governance strategies and actor-network theory (ANT), we explore how the …
Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Advising, Shane C. Hansen
Faculty Perceptions Of Academic Advising, Shane C. Hansen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Academic advising of students by faculty is considered an important component of education at many universities in the United States. However, faculty advisors do not always have input into advisor training and methods of obtaining advising information. Guided by Boyer’s model of scholarship, the purpose of this sequential explanatory mixed-methods research was to study the lack of faculty advisor input into the faculty advising process. Research questions addressed how the university faculty advisors’ responses on the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) Academic Advising module compared to a national sample and how faculty advisors described their perceptions of the advising …

Accreditation And Engineering Ethics Education, Shannon M. Chance
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Over time, individuals and entities within the engineering education community have developed a multifaceted strategy to synchronize global educational practices and performance metrics. This comprehensive approach involves conducting and disseminating educational research (evident throughout this handbook) and implementing research-informed pedagogies in the classroom (exemplified by the teaching methods section). It also includes establishing and aligning accreditation standards internationally – to guide the content and delivery of engineering education, including ethics. Although this section focuses on the accreditation of engineering ethics education (EEE), understanding the overall accreditation system is essential for grasping the ethics component.

Universal Asset Building: New Social Policy For A New Era, Michael Sherraden, Jin Huang, Li Zou
Center for Social Development Research
This Perspective explores the concept of universal asset building, beginning with Child Development Account policy, as a new paradigm in social policy, suggesting that it will be a positive social-policy strategy for navigating the information age, and especially artificial intelligence (AI). Universal asset building can address social and economic challenges posed by rapid technological advancements.
The Perspective is adapted from a keynote address given by Michael Sherraden (with Jin Huang and Li Zou) at the joint convening of the 2024 Annual Academic Conference for the Social Policy Research Committee of the Chinese Sociological Association and the 19th International Symposium on …
Measuring The Social Legitimacy Of International Investor-State Dispute Settlement: A New Research Agenda, Deborshi Barat Dr.
Measuring The Social Legitimacy Of International Investor-State Dispute Settlement: A New Research Agenda, Deborshi Barat Dr.
National Law School Business Law Review
The international investment law regime (IIL) has been criticised in recent times, where various stakeholders have claimed that the regime’s dispute resolution system lacks ‘legitimacy’. Simultaneously, the regime has encountered a backlash from states, interest groups, and the wider public. The convergence of these two elements has led to serious concern about the regime’s future. Since global initiatives are currently underway to ‘repair’ the legitimacy of IIL’s dispute resolution system, including under the aegis of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and pursuant to European Union (EU)-led proposals, the question of assessing such legitimacy has assumed added …
Student Success And Inclusive Excellence, Jalen M. Smith
Student Success And Inclusive Excellence, Jalen M. Smith
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
For this analysis, student success for inclusive excellence can be defined as the summation of resources, support strategies, and initiatives that cultivate the empowerment of marginalized student populations (e.g. students of color, LGBTQ+ students, “nontraditional” students, first- generation students, and underrepresented groups) to persist until degree completion or the procurement of skills and knowledge that will advance critical thinking and self-reflection.

The purpose of this research enquiry was to explore autoethnography as a useful and valid form of sociological research. To gain an understanding of its complex ethical considerations that differ from other methodologies and create an autoethnographical focus on experiences within a work based learning environment. This enquiry explores the thoughts, emotions and reactions provoked by a critical incident relating to racial hostility that stemmed from reactions to the days top news story. Investigating racism from biological and cultural aspects and examining critical race theory creates a perspective on how racist events can occur, develop and be maintained or reproduced. …
Widening Participation For Women In Initial Teacher Education It's Not A Problem, Is It? - What Are The Widening Participation Issues Encountered By Women As They Embark On A Primary Pgce Initial Teacher Training Course?, Kath Vineer
Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal
This research explores widening participation in one university-led Post Graduate Primary initial teacher education course (PGCE) in England. Rooted in a social constructivist paradigm and utilising a mixed-method social survey approach (questionnaires and group discussions), the widening participation (WP) issues students faced when embarking on this course were evaluated. Students worked with me as co-constructors of data by sharing stories of their journeys towards studying for this course. Specifically, the issues affecting women were investigated in order to critique the assumption that WP for women in higher education has been achieved. I am a teacher educator with a strongly held …

Intra-Active 'World-Making': Hope,Education, Utopias And Potentialeco-Socially Just Futures, Rosamonde Birch
Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal
The paper is an edited extract from an MA Education Dissertation that researched the discernment of hope with young people through the Philosophy for/with Children (P4wC) process. Through the paper the role of hope in the utopian project of education is considered in rapport with the ethico-onto-epistem-ology of Agential Realism (Barad, 2007) and how education is in relationship to how we imagine and create futures as collaborative ‘world-making’ communities. The paper begins by conceptualising hope through historical and contemporary theory and debate, whilst suggesting hope is a Living Narrative of ‘openings’ and future potentials. Through exploring critical education theory (Freire, …

The Qualitative Report
This paper offers a commentary and reflection on papers included in the Narrative Practice Research Network Special Issue of The Qualitative Report. A brief introductory account is offered around the distinctive nature of narrative therapy and community work, in contrast to more widely used models of therapy. Challenges and dilemmas associated with research into counselling and psychotherapy are discussed. It is suggested that the work of the Narrative Practice Research Network represents a promising means of addressing these challenges through a combination of grounding in practice, commitment to an ethics of care, and creative reconceptualization of standard research tools such …

Within-Day Diversity Change, Neighborhood Social Cohesion And Fear Of Crime, Chris Hess, Youngmin Yi, Gregory Sharp, Matt Hall
Faculty Articles
Research on neighborhood social organization and crime typically conceptualizes neighborhood change on the order of decades, even though the local social contexts that individuals experience change daily through mobility for work, errands and recreation. In this study, the authors analyze data from the Seattle Neighborhoods and Crime Survey linked to the Census Transportation Planning Products to investigate whether within-day changes in neighborhood diversity are associated with an individual’s social cohesion and fear of crime. The authors find that individuals living in neighborhoods where diversity increases during the daytime tend to report more social cohesion and relatively less fear of crime. …
