Modeling The Dynamic Agency In Human-Ai Collaboration, Shyhnan Liou, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Yu-Chen Chen, I Jen Wang, Shin-Bou Lin, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper presents a novel theoretical model conceptualizing the Sense of Agency (SoA) as foundational to ethical and effective human-AI collaboration. Moving beyond instrumentalist views of AI, we frame human-AI interaction as a dynamic, dyadic process wherein both humans and AI systems continuously assess, interpret, and adapt to perceptions of their own agency and that of their partner in real time. Grounded in philosophy of mind (intentional agency), psychological principles (Self- Determination Theory (SDT), equi finality), and systems engineering, our model introduces a quadripartite agency framework: the human’s first-person SoA, the human’s perception of AI agency, the AI’s computational self-agency, …

Rethinking Public Space Design And Assemblage Affordances: A Perspective From China's One-Child Generation And Solitude, Xia Bi, Yijia Jiang, Caterina Villani, Kin Wai Michael Siu
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how urban public space design in China responds to the growing demand for solitude, with a particular focus on the unique social and cultural preferences of the one-child generation. Drawing on relational thinking and affordance theory, the study examines how public spaces intentionally designed to promote social interaction are appropriated for solitary use. Through case analyses of public spaces in Shanghai and Yantai, China, the paper reveals the emergence of improvised and serendipitous affordances that reflect changing user behaviours and cultural expectations. This paper highlights the need to move beyond intent-driven design toward a relational model that …

"Weaving Home Over Time": Uncovering Layered Narratives Of Belonging Through Participatory Homemaking In Dementia Care, Natsumi Wada, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Alessandro Biamonti
IASDR Conference Series
What elements make you feel that this is “home”? This study investigates the multifaceted concept of “home” for people with dementia, extending beyond physical shelter to encompass sensory, emotional, and relational dimensions. Drawing on a qualitative, participatory co-design approach at GRACE Lab— a living lab embedded in a Milan dementia village—we engaged five residents with mild-to-moderate dementia, care staff, and design researchers in semi-structured interviews, observations, storytelling, and one-on-one workshops. A bespoke toolkit of icon cards and collage materials was used to elicit personal memories and co-construct individualized “home” narratives. Data coded in MaxQDA24 were analysed through a multimodal narrative …

Examining The Boundary Infrastructures Around 'Fair Food': The Sustainable Transition Approach Of Postane, Cagri G. Varli, Betül Şahin
IASDR Conference Series
In response to the growing sense of distrust in mainstream food systems, Alternative Food Networks have gained traction by prioritizing ecological, ethical, and participatory principles. One such alternative initiative is the ‘fair food’ ecosystem developed by the urban hub Postane Istanbul, which this study explores as a case. Postane brings together food-related practices, infrastructures, and actors around the idea of fair food. The study focuses on how fair food can act as a boundary object that mediates between diverse actors, values, and practices. Data were collected through site visits, document analysis, and long-term participant observation, offering insights into Postane’s fair …

Reconstructing Feminist Subjectivity Through Digital Art Filters: A Neoliberal Perspective, Yinjun Diao
IASDR Conference Series
As self-images are continuously shaped and shared in the “age of visual truth,” digital photography technology gradually guides and transforms the aesthetic ideology of neoliberal female users online. From early beautification algorithms that address facial imperfections to filter effects that enhance the quality of daily life, young women online actively engaging in self-presentation through digital images signifies an acceptance of a new possibility of representational freedom. This study examines the subjectivity of young Chinese female users in online image practices, investigating whether they have cultivated a more flexible system of self-regulation through evolving strategies of self-image presentation. Although digital image …

The Uk Craft Makers Service Design Innovation And Stakeholder Engagement, Li Zhang, Andrew May, Stefania Sansoni, Cees De Bont
IASDR Conference Series
This paper, through a case study, shows how five UK craft makers design services around their daily routines. Based on that, the study offers insight into how the craft makers offer these services and the motivations behind their service design implementation. Additionally, during the service process, specific stakeholders are involved in the network. These people will have an impact on the service procedures and results. Based on that, we will create a clear service ecosystem map that shows who offers these services and who receives them. This study provides new insights into how UK craft makers operate services in innovative …
The Design Research Of "Tema": Exploring Intentional Acts Of Taking Time And Effort In A Contemporary Society, Tianshuo Lu, Takuma Ishikawa
The Design Research Of "Tema": Exploring Intentional Acts Of Taking Time And Effort In A Contemporary Society, Tianshuo Lu, Takuma Ishikawa
IASDR Conference Series
In today’s hyper-efficient world, why do people engage in activities that require time and effort? This research explores the causes and meanings of such behaviors through the Japanese concept of “tema”, defined as intentional, non-optimized engagement where the process holds intrinsic value. Using workshops and qualitative interviews, we identify four key elements of “tema”: time, body, creativity, and value. These deliberate actions foster personal meaning, emotional satisfaction, and deeper connection with the material world. Building on these insights, we propose a design potential that applies “tema” as a framework for creative practice. Rather than reinforcing a binary between efficiency and …
Redefining Resistance: Las Madres De La Plaza De Mayo, Echoes Of Trauma And Memory In Argentina, Elizabeth J. Kaye
Redefining Resistance: Las Madres De La Plaza De Mayo, Echoes Of Trauma And Memory In Argentina, Elizabeth J. Kaye
Honors Theses
Argentina's "Dirty War" (1976–1983) stands as one of the darkest and most painful periods in the nation’s history. During these years, the military dictatorship, known as the "Proceso de Reorganización Nacional," implemented a systematic campaign of state terrorism, targeting suspected political protesters, activists, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. Widespread kidnappings, illegal detentions, and forced disappearances became routine, with an estimated 30,000 people vanishing without a trace. Families were left in despair, searching for answers that the government refused to provide. In response, a group of determined mothers, known as “Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo”, formed a powerful movement demanding …
Early Life And Post-Traumatic Growth Among Urban African Americans, J. Howard Streeter Iii
Early Life And Post-Traumatic Growth Among Urban African Americans, J. Howard Streeter Iii
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Post-traumatic growth (PTG) has received increasing attention in psychological research, yet the PTG experiences of African Americans remain underexplored. Trauma researchers have established the common prevalence of trauma within this population, but there have been very few studies on how African Americans traverse trauma according to PTG. Understanding PTG in this population is essential for clergy, coaches, parents, counselors, and others who work in these communities. The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to determine whether there was a statistically significant relationship between rumination, religious orientation, religious commitment, and stressful life events (SLEs) and PTG among urban African American …

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the large-scale destruction of many cities across the country. Although the war has not yet ended, there will come a time when the conflict concludes, and reconstruction efforts will begin. Global experiences show that the first step in preparing for post-war reconstruction is to assess the level of destruction. Additionally, it is essential to understand people’s needs and priorities. Otherwise, reconstruction activities may fail to address the existing challenges and actual needs of local communities. This study aims to explore post-war reconstruction priorities of Ukrainians, with special focus on the energy sector …
Breaking The Silence: Addressing The Crisis Of Osec & The Knowledge Gap Among Health Professionals, Toni Morris, Elizabeth Ziff
Breaking The Silence: Addressing The Crisis Of Osec & The Knowledge Gap Among Health Professionals, Toni Morris, Elizabeth Ziff
Biennial Convention (CONV)
OSEC is a significant public health crisis globally. It involves the sexual abuse of minors through the internet, including creating, sharing, or possessing sexual material featuring children. OSEC is widespread yet often hidden due to its sensitive nature, making it challenging to address openly. The increasing use of digital technology and social media exacerbates this problem, providing predators with more tools to exploit children.
Children are especially vulnerable, facing serious threats to their physical and emotional well-being. Despite global efforts to combat OSEC, the ubiquity of the internet and advancements in technology have made prevention and intervention difficult. Early identification …

A Double-Edged Sword: Ethical And Psychological Implications Of Apoe Genotype Disclosure Across The Lifespan, Diego Iacono
A Double-Edged Sword: Ethical And Psychological Implications Of Apoe Genotype Disclosure Across The Lifespan, Diego Iacono
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with the ε4 allele increasing risk and decreasing the average age of onset. While APOE genotyping is primarily used in research or clinical settings for patients with memory concerns, interest in disclosing APOE status to asymptomatic individuals—particularly during early adulthood—is growing. This trend is fueled by the rise of direct-to-consumer genetic testing and emerging prevention-focused clinical trials. However, ethical debates remain unresolved about the potential harms of early disclosure, including anxiety, stigma, and misunderstanding of probabilistic risk. Conversely, some argue that knowledge of APOE …

Religious Communication In Ukraine's Media Space As Factor In The Formation Of Confessional Identity, Oleh Sokolovskyi, Dmytro Garaschuk
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article presents a comprehensive study within religious studies of religious periodicals in Ukraine from the early 1990s to the present. It attempts to analyze the dynamics of the emergence and transformation of printed religious mass media in the context of the democratization of social life, changes in the information environment, and the development of civil society. It is noted that religious periodicals occupy a special place within the media landscape, since they perform not only the function of conveying information but also tasks of catechesis, spiritual-educational ministry, the formation of value orientations, and the preservation of cultural-historical heritage.

Sex, The Body, And Learning Gender: Demons In The World Of The Five Gods, Erin E. Mcbrien
Sex, The Body, And Learning Gender: Demons In The World Of The Five Gods, Erin E. Mcbrien
Mythopoeic Society Seminar Proceedings
“Sex, the Body, and Learning Gender” analyzes the relationship between the physical body, sexual orientation, and gender as characterized within Lois McMaster Bujold’s World of the Five Gods series, with a particular emphasis on her Penric and Desdemona novellas. Using the framework of Bussey and Bandura’s social learning theory, and a close reading of Bujold’s text, this paper explores how the demonic characters within this series are an example of gender as a learned concept rather than a biological imperative. This is further developed by examining how the demonic characters both imprint on and contrast against the more societally-bound sorcerers …

Book Review: Ecologies Of Inequity. How Disaster Response Reconstitutes Race And Class Inequality, Abel Traslaviña-Arias
Critical Disaster Studies
In Ecologies of Inequity: How Disaster Response Reconstitutes Race and Class Inequality, Sancha Doxilly Medwinter gathered diverse stories about how various migrant communities had to overcome not only disaster but also the overlapping networks established by those who were supposed to support them in 2012 in New York City. Medwinter portrays this contested post-disaster landscape through a thorough data recording of 120 individuals affiliated with various groups: racialized migrants or locals, tenants or property owners, local or external helpers, and those from wealthy or impoverished backgrounds. Ecologies of Inequity refer to the spatialized networks of organizational and interpersonal relations …

Are Loyalty Programmes Still “A Thing” In High-Fashion Retail? Understanding Generation Z’S Perspective, Živa Kolbl, Lori Šušulić
Economic and Business Review
This study investigates the relevance and perception of loyalty programmes (LPs) among Generation Z (Gen Z) consumers in the high-fashion retail sector. While LPs are well-established tools for fostering customer retention, their effectiveness among Gen Z, a cohort characterized by digital fluency, a preference for authenticity, and distinct consumption values, remains underexplored. Given the high-fashion context, where exclusivity and identity are critical, this study examines the extent to which LPs resonate with this generation. Utilizing a qualitative methodology and with the help of thematic analysis, we reveal four key dimensions: drivers of high-fashion consumption, shopping preferences, customer loyalty patterns, and …
The Impact Of Market And Nonmarket Strategies On Firm Performance In Lithuania, John A. Parnell, Michael W. Davidson
The Impact Of Market And Nonmarket Strategies On Firm Performance In Lithuania, John A. Parnell, Michael W. Davidson
Economic and Business Review
This study examines the impact of market strategies (global growth, differentiation, and cost leadership) and nonmarket strategies (political engagement and social responsibility) on firm performance in Lithuania. Based on survey data from 114 managers analyzed using partial least squares structural equation (PLS-SEM) modeling, a global growth/differentiation strategy has a positive impact on performance, whereas cost leadership does not. Nonmarket strategies positively influence firm performance, with larger firms benefiting more, ostensibly due to greater resource availability and institutional influence. Firm size moderates the relationship between nonmarket strategies and performance, highlighting the importance of tailoring strategies to an organization's specific characteristics. By …
“She’S A Good Different. She’S Revolutionary”: How Fifth-Grade Readers Interpret Aspects Of Diversity In Literature, Margaret Barr
“She’S A Good Different. She’S Revolutionary”: How Fifth-Grade Readers Interpret Aspects Of Diversity In Literature, Margaret Barr
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Although diversity, equity, and inclusion have been a significant focus of research in children’s literature, many studies fail to consider the reader’s perspective and instead rely on text analyses. In the present study, the author employed focus groups to examine fifth-grade readers’ insights as they interpreted, related to, and engaged with the presence of diversity in texts. Findings indicate that readers interpreted diversity by envisioning the larger picture, recognizing the importance of others’ differences, and connecting through emotions. Thus, this study suggests that it is necessary for teachers to understand that students recognize and appreciate individual differences, to select texts …

Beyond The Red Pen: Investigating The Formation Of Reader And Writer Identity Development In Preservice Teachers, Sarah Rutt Williams, Pengtong Qu, Lydia Denning
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The influence of identifying as a reader and writer in being a literacy teacher has been emphasized in the literature (Graves, 1983). However, few studies have explored how teacher education programs develop these identities in preservice teachers (PSTs). Grounded in Demerath’s (2006) epistemological identity theory, this study explored the fluid process of teacher identity formation, focusing on nurturing PSTs’ identities as readers and writers. The study took place over one semester in an English Education course. The researchers analyzed three PST participants’ weekly reflections about their beliefs regarding teaching and learning literacy. These statements revolved around topics that aligned with …
Universal Classroom Design, Michelle Dodson Landry
Universal Classroom Design, Michelle Dodson Landry
Women’s Leadership
This research seeks to bridge the gap between K–12 inclusion practices and the realities of higher education by exploring how universal design, institutional support, and educators’ belief systems can create more inclusive environments and support students to have higher grades and more intrinsic mastery of the subject matter. It is not enough to mandate inclusion; we must actively build systems that support all learners, regardless of whether their disability is visible, diagnosed, or self-identified. This study looked at the efficacy of universal classroom design in raising the median grade in a course. The median grade in this course has historically …

An Autoethnography: How Professional Organizations Serve As Professional Development For Secondary Journalism Teachers, Mark R. Hilburn
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The purpose of this autoethnography is to provide analysis and explain the importance of professional development experiences for secondary teachers, especially for those that are singletons in a school, district, or community.
Autoethnography is a qualitive research method in which the researcher is also the subject of the study. In autoethnography, the researcher uses autobiographical stories to analyze and interpret their lived experiences with the purpose of extending sociological understanding. It reflects the interconnectivity of self, others, and culture (Hamdan, 2012).
Effective professional development is typically long-term, collegial, supported by leadership, and context-specific (Richardson, 2003; Sparks, 2002), and essential for …
