Anti-Holistic Algorithms, Itay Ravid Nov 2025

Anti-Holistic Algorithms, Itay Ravid

Faculty Publications

This Article presents a critical tension in modern criminal justice between holistic criminal-justice aspirations and algorithmic governance: whether the holistic rehabilitation and reintegration project can survive technological determinism. As criminal legal systems embrace algorithmic risk- assessment tools as solutions to address recidivism, this Article reveals a profound epistemological concern: the fundamental incompatibility between viewing offenders as “whole persons” capable of transformation and reducing them to statistical probabilities within computational matrices. By doing so, it demonstrates how algorithmic mediation fundamentally alters—and potentially destroys—the holistic message itself.

In establishing this argument, the Article advances in two stages. It first identifies the development …

Holistic Criminal Justice, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg Nov 2025

Holistic Criminal Justice, Hadar Dancig-Rosenberg

Vanderbilt Law Review

What does it mean to adopt a holistic approach to criminal justice? This symposium treats that question as a foundational inquiry into the theory, practice, and institutional architecture of criminal law. At a time of eroding public trust, a broad recognition that mass incarceration both reflects and entrenches structural inequality, growing pressure on legal actors to account for the human costs of their decisions, and anxiety about the rule of law, revisiting the normative commitments of criminal law feels like an urgent task. Holistic criminal justice is not a single method or intervention. It is a reorientation—a conceptual framework and …

Examining Public Opinion On Endorsed Punishments For Illegal Abortion By Abortion Legality And Abortion-Restrictive States Before Dobbs V. Jackson, Lucretia Mena-Melendez, Kristen N. Jozkowski, Brandon L. Crawford, Ronna C. Turner, Wen-Juo Lo Nov 2025

Examining Public Opinion On Endorsed Punishments For Illegal Abortion By Abortion Legality And Abortion-Restrictive States Before Dobbs V. Jackson, Lucretia Mena-Melendez, Kristen N. Jozkowski, Brandon L. Crawford, Ronna C. Turner, Wen-Juo Lo

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research SummaryAs a result of the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, state lawmakers can and have enacted abortion restrictions, including criminal penalties targeting those who seek, provide, or assist with abortion. Given the current legal landscape, it is imperative to assess public opinion regarding the endorsement of punishments for illegal abortion. We conducted multivariate analyses to assess factors associated with punishment endorsements for an illegal abortion for the pregnant woman and healthcare provider. We also evaluated whether individual beliefs (i.e., abortion legality) and contextual factors (i.e., living in an abortion-restrictive state) may …

Shoplifting In The Us: Problems, Progress, And The Path Forward, Alan Saquella Nov 2025

Shoplifting In The Us: Problems, Progress, And The Path Forward, Alan Saquella

Publications

Shoplifting has moved from a manageable nuisance to an urgent threat across the U.S. In large metropolitan and suburban markets alike, retailers, communities, and law enforcement are grappling with increasingly sophisticated theft both opportunistic and organized. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), retail theft (including organized retail crime) cost U.S. businesses nearly $112 billion in 2022. The consequences ripple beyond balance sheets: consumers face higher prices, employees confront increased risk, and some communities lose storefronts that cannot survive persistent losses.

Implementing Responsible Artificial Intelligence In Marketing, V. Kumar, Ashutosh Dixit, Priyanka Sharma, Sudipendra Nath Roy

American Business Review

Ethical use of AI ensures equity and fairness for all stakeholders, leading to enhanced business performance. This conceptual paper explores the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in marketing through a literature synthesis grounded in ethical theory. Drawing on frameworks such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, ethics of care, and contractarianism, the study identifies five key ethical challenges—monopolization, privacy, corporate social responsibility, human rights, and accountability. Real-world cases illustrate how these challenges manifest in practice. The paper proposes theory-driven solutions including data democratization, contextual data use, adherence to human rights protocols, and the establishment of AI governance mechanisms like ombudspersons. …

Leave Them To Their Own Devices: When Employee Informal Power In Strategically Core Roles Enhances Organizational Performance, Alexandru Roman Nov 2025

Leave Them To Their Own Devices: When Employee Informal Power In Strategically Core Roles Enhances Organizational Performance, Alexandru Roman

American Business Review

In this empirical study, I develop theorizing on the conditions under which employees’ informal, competence-based power in strategically core roles enhances organizational performance. I propose that in contexts characterized by high task specialization and interdependence, employees with high informal power positively influence performance through higher motivation and improved coordination. However, this effect is weaker when managers also hold high informal power or emphasize hierarchical structures, as these factors create power conflicts that undermine employees’ informal influence. Conversely, the positive effect is stronger when employees receive negative performance feedback, which they perceive as a challenge to their competence, leading to stronger …

Impact Of Resilience On Emotional Intelligence & Burnout Among Academicians: A Mediation Study, Shwati Sudha, Shrejal Kumari, Govind Swaroop Pathak Nov 2025

Impact Of Resilience On Emotional Intelligence & Burnout Among Academicians: A Mediation Study, Shwati Sudha, Shrejal Kumari, Govind Swaroop Pathak

American Business Review

Resilience is examined as a mediator between emotional intelligence and burnout. The study also investigates the implications of emotional intelligence on burnout. An empirical investigation was conducted among 257 academicians employing purposive sampling. Primary data were obtained using a 5-point likert scale, incorporating validated tools, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Nicholson McBride Resilience Questionnaire (NMRQ), Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), Self-Regulation Inventory (SRQ), Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), and Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The analysis was performed using Hayes (2018) SPSS Process Macro Model 4. Burnout was found as positively correlated with resilience and emotional intelligence, while emotional intelligence also …

The Effectiveness Of A First-Year Experience Course: A Case Study From A Public Regional University In The Central United States, Taler J. Alexander Nov 2025

The Effectiveness Of A First-Year Experience Course: A Case Study From A Public Regional University In The Central United States, Taler J. Alexander

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student retention has become an increasingly popular topic for colleges and universities as they look for ways to keep students amid ever-changing budget climates. Research shows that high quality first-year experience (FYE) courses can provide crucial support to new students as they enter the college or university. Additionally, many researchers have found that supporting students through their transition to a new college environment, developing their sense of belonging, and helping them get involved on campus lead to increased student retention. The purpose of this study was to explore the curriculum, format, and delivery of the FYE course at Blue University …

Breaking Barriers: Mentorship Pathways For Hispanic Women In Leadership Roles, Ana Paola Gonzalez Nov 2025

Breaking Barriers: Mentorship Pathways For Hispanic Women In Leadership Roles, Ana Paola Gonzalez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to understand the unique lived experiences of 10 Hispanic Latinas serving in leadership roles in 2-year community colleges in Texas. As the graduation rate of Hispanic women increases, institutions must identify mentorship programs that motivate women who continue to graduate to seek leadership positions within their institutions. Through life stories and lived experiences, the study's findings illustrate that mentorship is essential to creating, but that self-determination and self-advocacy also make it possible to find paths to leadership. Through thematic analysis, three themes emerged from the data: identity and representation, mentorship and support structures, and resilience and advocacy. …

Critical Young Consumers: What Types Of Porn Do Teens Watch, And Why?, Giselle Woodley, Marc Zen, Harrison W. See, Lelia Green Nov 2025

Critical Young Consumers: What Types Of Porn Do Teens Watch, And Why?, Giselle Woodley, Marc Zen, Harrison W. See, Lelia Green

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Pornography use by teens is of growing concern to parents and communities. There is, however, often little differentiation made between the types of contents being consumed or exploration of the types of pornography teens are watching and why. This paper interrogates data collected from 49 qualitative interviews, including 19 follow-up interviews and 4× focus groups with teens. This paper explores teens’ perspectives on the types of pornography accessed by themselves and their peers, and popular categories of pornography more widely. Teens appear to view various types and genres of pornography, as do adults. Some teens prefer ‘ethical’ sources of porn, …

The Paradox Of The Broker: Why Educators Of Color Must Be Supported, Not Just Celebrated, Tatiana C. Parker

Gatherings

In this article, Dr. Tatiana C. Parker examines the transformative potential of social capital brokering within the higher education system, particularly for communities that have been systematically excluded through opportunity hoarding and network closures both historically and presently. Institutions of learning have long served as sites for the transmission of instrumental (tangible) and expressive (emotional) social capital returns. Yet, the same system that has supported mobility is now under attack through the divestment of education, ideological resistance, and the longstanding disenfranchisement of educators of color.

Drawing on her research regarding Black women and upward mobility, she asserts that when educators, …

The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman Oct 2025

The Roots Of Credit Inequality, Andrea Freeman

Seattle University Law Review

Debt oppression began before the United States became a country. Settlers enslaved Africans and Indigenous people, treating them as property that they could buy and sell for their economic and personal benefit. When enslavement became illegal, new economic systems and laws that included sharecropping, Black Codes, and Jim Crow kept Black people in servitude. Laws that prohibited enslaved people from owning property or selling goods to white people evolved into restrictions on Black people’s occupations and market participation, both formal and informal. When Black entrepreneurs overcame these obstacles and built wealth within Black business enclaves, white people enforced their racist …
