Prison Rape: An Endless Epidemic?, Kathleen M. Darcy, Hannah Brenner Johnson Nov 2025

Prison Rape: An Endless Epidemic?, Kathleen M. Darcy, Hannah Brenner Johnson

University of Memphis Law Review

Congress passed the landmark Prison Rape Elimination Act (“PREA”) in 2003 with unanimous support from both the Senate and House of Representatives. After the rampant sexual violence occurring behind the closed doors of prisons and jails (much of which was perpetrated by the staff of these institutions) was brought to light by human rights organizations, news media, lawyers, and activists in the late 1990s, lawmakers crafted this unprecedented federal law to establish a zero-tolerance policy for what it described as an “invisible epidemic.” At the law’s twenty-year mark, justice-involved individuals are still being sexually victimized in carceral settings, day after …

Advocating For Health Equity: A Quality Improvement Project Surrounding Social Determinants Of Health Screening, Rose Anne Dela Cruz, Amanda Marquez, Madison Lemmons

2025

INNOVATION & LEADERSHIP

Background
: Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) can gravely impact patient recovery. Health organizations should prioritize identifying high-risk SDOH patients to improve patient outcomes. Current research suggests SDOH screening should be standard practice in preventative care. With this awareness, healthcare team members must identify patients with complex social determinants of health needs to ensure essential resources are offered to enhance their healing process during hospitalization and sustain it post-discharge. The most straightforward approach to identifying patients from diverse backgrounds with SDOH requirements is via SDOH screening. The collaborating health system, serving a diverse pediatric population in the …

Improving Sdoh Screening Compliance In Pediatric Settings: Addressing Health Literacy In East Texas, Katie Bien Nov 2025

Improving Sdoh Screening Compliance In Pediatric Settings: Addressing Health Literacy In East Texas, Katie Bien

2025

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

Background
: Low parental health literacy is an under-screened social determinant of health (SDOH) that drives inequities in rural communities such as East Texas, where over 105,000 children lack access to a pediatrician, and families travel 80+ miles for care. Pediatric mortality in this region is 2.5 times the national average (UT Tyler SOM, 2023). National data indicate that one in three parents has limited health literacy (Tran et al., 2008), further exacerbating risks of missed appointments, medication errors, and poor outcomes.

Methodology: The initiative was conducted in a rural outpatient pediatric cardiology clinic within Children’s Health …

Student Systematized Reviews: Occupational Therapy

Purpose: Care partners of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) often experience disrupted routines, reduced self-care, and limited participation in meaningful occupations. Occupational therapy (OT) supports care partners’ engagement in health-promoting activities and sustainable caregiving (Rhodus et al., 2023). This systematized review examined interventions that enhance care partner performance and participation.

Design: Peer-reviewed, English-language articles were included if they involved adult care partners of individuals with AD or NCDs, implemented an intervention within the scope of OT, and used quantitate research designs.

Method: A total of 319 articles from MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus were screened; 61 …

Book Review: Resisting The Dehumanization Of Refugees, Staci Martin Nov 2025

Book Review: Resisting The Dehumanization Of Refugees, Staci Martin

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Resisting the Dehumanization of Refugees, edited by Abu-Laban, Frishkopf, Hasmath, and Kirova, has a familiar quality when I read it. The book explores the profound struggle to cocreate a sense of home and belonging amidst the relentless dehumanization refugees face from restrictive policies, biased media portrayals, and societal prejudice. It adopts a transdisciplinary approach, featuring contributions from scholars, practitioners, and refugees themselves, who focus on the Canadian context and draw on broader international comparisons that support both the mechanisms of dehumanization and strategies for resistance.

“This Is Not Normal”: The Global Academy’S Resistance To Authoritarianism And Academic Capitalism, Catherine A. Labrenz, Christian Adeleke, Maria Lúcia T. Garcia, Aline Pandolfi, Mara Mattioni, Fabíola Xavier Leal, Marcela Nava

Fast Capitalism

Summary: In the wake of rising authoritarianism and neoliberal retrenchment, academic institutions across the globe are increasingly pressured to suppress dissent, sanitize curricula, and deprioritize justice-based scholarship. Drawing from responses to political repression in Brazil and Argentina, this paper connects present-day U.S. conditions to transnational histories of academic resistance.

Findings: We locate today’s institutional silencing within the broader logics of academic capitalism and authoritarian governance, emphasizing how compliance, rather than critical engagement, is becoming the new normal.

Applications: Drawing on radical traditions of academic and professional resistance from the Americas, we present lessons learned and action steps …

Considerations And Guidelines For Clinical Training And Professional Practice In The Area Of Psychotherapy Termination, Elyssa L. Jampolsky Nov 2025

Considerations And Guidelines For Clinical Training And Professional Practice In The Area Of Psychotherapy Termination, Elyssa L. Jampolsky

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Treatment termination occurs, invariably, in every psychotherapy relationship. Closing the therapy relationship is often a complex process and requires targeted training for psychotherapists to terminate treatment competently and in a way that preserves gains made and fosters continued client growth. Discontinuation of psychotherapy services requires practitioners to apply ethical knowledge, clinical expertise, and relational boundaries. Further, the nuances of forced, end-of-year termination in clinical training environments necessitates targeted supervision and explicit guidelines. Surprisingly, termination practices are underemphasized in training programs and in the literature. The current paper will review the extant literature related to psychotherapy termination broadly as well as …

Cultivating A Sense Of Community: International Students Navigating Community Engaged Learning Opportunities In Line With Their Social Goals, Katherine Lyon, Nicole Malette Nov 2025

Cultivating A Sense Of Community: International Students Navigating Community Engaged Learning Opportunities In Line With Their Social Goals, Katherine Lyon, Nicole Malette

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

International students often envision their time studying abroad with particular academic, professional, social, linguistic, and identity-related goals in mind (Fong, 2011; Jones, 2013; Montgomery & McDowell, 2009; Page, 2019; Page & Chahboun, 2019). Post-secondary institutions can provide resources and opportunities to help this heterogeneous group of students bring their vision into fruition. One such opportunity is community engaged learning (CEL), which has been shown to help students expand their social and academic abilities as they make contributions to an organization (Arnold, 2019; Greenberg, London & McKay, 2020; Mayer et al., 2019). Through in-depth interviews with 25 new international students who …

Unit Interest Survey (Uis): Validating New Graduate Nurse (Ngn) Work-Life Assessment, Tiffany Montgomery, Danielle Walker

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Background: NGN retention is a concern in the US, with 23.8% turnover rate costing hospitals an average of $56,277 per nurse. Healthcare organizations must adopt strategies to retain and engage NGNs. Currently, applicants choose work units based on staffing needs or preferences, not personal assessment (strengths, communication style, personality). Self-reflection when choosing a practice setting could enhance job satisfaction and reduce burnout. Person-job fit moderates n job performance and compassion fatigue, while lifestyle factors influence retention. No reliable tool exists for guiding NGNs in assessing work and lifestyle preferences

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate …

Burnout And Perceived Organizational Support Among Female Healthcare Social Workers, Shukundala Clark Champion Nov 2025

Burnout And Perceived Organizational Support Among Female Healthcare Social Workers, Shukundala Clark Champion

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Healthcare social workers experience elevated levels of burnout, or psychological distress resulting from a prolonged mismatch between the individual and their work environment. The problem addressed in this generic qualitative study is that female healthcare social workers experience elevated rates of burnout but may not receive adequate perceived organizational support (POS) to help ameliorate burnout. This study concentrated on female healthcare social workers' descriptions and experiences of burnout and POS. The guiding theoretical framework for this study is the perceived organizational support theory (POST). The study was conducted with 14 female healthcare social workers working in various healthcare settings in …

Burnout is common among hospice clinical social workers due to the emotionally demanding nature of the profession and heavy caseloads. This study explored how hospice clinical social workers perceive the role of empowerment and self-care practices in reducing burnout. The qualitative design used semi-structured interviews with ten hospice clinical social workers. Thematic analysis identified five categories: indicators of burnout, team-based/relational support, systemic and workload pressures, organizational culture, and values and professional identity. The themes that emerged from the five categories were emotional, physical, and professional; interdisciplinary support and supervisory support; workload and organizational demands; organizational challenges and policy limitations; workplace …

Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter Nov 2025

Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The challenges individual agencies face in addressing the complex issue of human trafficking and how interagency collaboration can strengthen survivor-centered support are largely unknown. Organizations often lack formal alliances that combine expertise and resources to deliver more comprehensive care. The absence of such partnerships represents a missed opportunity to provide the essential services necessary for survivors’ recovery, empowerment, and social reintegration. The purpose of the study was to use interagency collaboration to address the question: How can education, law enforcement, public health, and community-based organizations assess the barriers and benefits of interagency collaboration to create a more seamless support network …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacterium, rarely reported as a cause of diabetic wound infections. Its frequent resistance to β-lactams and carbapenems limits treatment options, especially in immunocompromised patients. We present the case of a 59-year-old unhoused male living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and prior bilateral transmetatarsal amputations who presented with a University of Texas 3B diabetic foot ulcer. Magnetic resonance imaging showed osteomyelitis of metatarsals 2–4, and bone biopsy grew Providencia rettgeri and Proteus mirabilis. The patient declined further surgery and was treated with 6 weeks of cefepime and metronidazole, with outpatient wound care, achieving wound closure …

Exploring Predictors Of Lgbt-Affirming Counseling Self-Efficacy Among Counselors And Counselors In Training, Mary Agnes Louise Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There is a growing need for counselors and counselors-in-training to provide affirming services competently and confidently to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) clients. Previous research has demonstrated that factors such as personal attitudes, religious commitment, and exposure to LGBT individuals influence counselors’ perceived competence in this area. However, little is known about how these variables interact to shape LGBT-affirming counseling self-efficacy, a critical component of effective and ethical practice. The present study investigated predictors of LGBT-affirming counseling self-efficacy among a sample of 131 professional counselors and counselors-in-training. Specifically, the study examined the direct effects of gender, religious commitment, and …

School of Medicine Publications

The wrist joint is a complex articulation that involves the distal radius, ulna, eight carpal bones (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform, trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate), and the bases of the metacarpals. Trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture-dislocations are complex wrist injuries, most commonly resulting from high-energy mechanisms involving hyperextension and ulnar deviation. Prompt diagnosis and surgical management are essential in restoring wrist function and stability. This report focuses on the case of a 28-year-old male who sustained a trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation with multiple associated fractures after an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rollover accident. Surgical intervention included median nerve decompression, open reduction and internal fixation …

Combatting Weight Bias In Healthcare Students, Jacy Ghast, Holly Farley, Johnna Paulson Nov 2025

Combatting Weight Bias In Healthcare Students, Jacy Ghast, Holly Farley, Johnna Paulson

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Healthcare workers often hold implicit biases against patients with obesity, impacting communication, quality of care, and health outcomes. This pilot study explored implicit weight bias among pre-licensure nursing students towards obese patients, implements a structured intervention, and assesses changes in attitudes, perceptions, and confidence levels. The study's purpose is to enhance nursing education curricula by incorporating training that promotes unbiased, patient-centered care for obese patients. Ideally, students will have the capability to reflect, respect, and respond to patients in a positive manor. Grounded in social constructivist theory, the intervention employs simulated learning experiences, followed by debriefing and reflection. Pre- and …

The Prevalence Of Healthcare Inequity In The Treatment Of Women With Opioid Use Disorder, Bridget R. Scott-Fletcher, Mary Annapoorna, Dana El Hajj

Biennial Convention (CONV)

In trying to achieve gender equity in society there continues to be a shortfall with the burden of childcare, household duties, generational caregiving, working, and other duties still being unequally placed on women. The article by Cerrato & Cifre (2018) highlighted this in that women spend an average of 38 hours per week caring for children as opposed to men who were noted to spend an average of 23. This is irrespective of the fact that women continue to strengthen in numbers in the workforce these hours remain unchanged. A man, in contrast, will neither see nor realize any change …
