A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis On The Effect Of Nature Exposure Dose On Adults With Mental Illness, Joanna Ellen Bettmann, Elizabeth Speelman, Annelise Jolley, Tallie Casucci
Faculty and Staff Works
Time spent in nature leads to significant physical and mental benefits, but research is mixed on how much time in nature is necessary to affect change in adults' mental health. This meta-analysis aimed to answer the question: what effect does length and interval of nature dosage have on adults with mental illness? The authors defined nature exposure as an experience in nature lasting at least 10 minutes and taking place in an actual natural setting. Because some studies indicated single experiences of exposure to nature (one-time) while others utilized multiple exposures to nature (interval), these studies were separated to determine …

Celebrating Achievements As Digital Rituals Among Indonesian Youth On Social Media, B.J. Sujibto, Malikatun Natiqoh, Kafhaya Nuzulanisa, Saras Wati Widodo
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Youth and social media are increasingly intertwined, as their socio-cultural trajectories accelerate digital connectedness and intensify the contestation of diverse identities. Posting on social media has thus become a ritualized practice. This article explores how Indonesian university students construct identities by sharing achievement stories and success narratives on Instagram. Using qualitative data, it examines the experiences of students who have excelled in academic competitions. The study identifies two key typologies behind such posts. Firstly, personal determinism, aimed at self- reward and self-branding. Secondly, social motivation, focused on inspiring peers and building supportive networks to achieve academic success. These typologies reflect …
The Role Of Social Support In Protecting Against Perinatal Depression Among Egyptian Women, Radwa Raafat Abdelshafi
The Role Of Social Support In Protecting Against Perinatal Depression Among Egyptian Women, Radwa Raafat Abdelshafi
Theses and Dissertations
Perinatal Depression (PND) is a global public health issue affecting many women as they transition to motherhood, and carrying detrimental consequences for both mothers and infants. Research in low and middle-income countries shows higher PND prevalence rates than in high-income and Western countries. In addition, social support has been shown to strongly protect or reduce the impact of PND. This study aimed to address a gap in research on PND in Egypt, and to build an understanding of the social support ecological system of new mothers. A survey was conducted with 81 first-time middle-class mothers living in Greater Cairo between …

Using Graphic Memoirs In A Counseling Children And Adolescent Course: A Phenomenological Arts-Based Study, Timothy Schoonover, Emily Horton, Kailey Bradley
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Graphic memoirs in learning environments can facilitate deep educational processes, such as dismantling stigma and biases. There is limited research on the use of graphic memoirs in counselor education. This arts-based phenomenological investigation explored 26 CITs’ experiences with a graphic memoir assignment in a counseling children and adolescent course. There were four themes and one subtheme identified: (a) understanding the Deaf experience and advocacy, (b) professional growth and counseling insights, (c) personal reflection and connection, and (d) educational impact and engagement and one subtheme of using bibliotherapy and creative activities in counseling practice. Discussion and implications for counselor educators are …

Site Supervisor Roles And Responsibilities: Counseling Programs’ Written Expectations, Justin D. Lauka, Amanda Mccarthy, Steven Moody, Minna Yoo
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Site supervisors play a vital role in training clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) students during their field work. While clear roles and responsibilities for site supervision is a professional and ethical requirement, the scope of these expectations remains ambiguous. This article provides baseline empirical data on the expectations of sites and site supervisors communicated through field experience handbooks of CACREP-accredited CMHC programs. The authors completed a qualitative content analysis that resulted in three key categories including Site and Site Supervisor Administrative Expectations, Clinical Supervision, and Site/Program Interaction. Implications for counseling programs and future research are discussed.

Grief Education In Accredited Counseling Programs: Tools For Integrating Grief Counseling Concepts Into The Cacrep Foundational Counseling Curriculum, Nicole A. Stargell, Emily T. Smith, Gary W. Mauk
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Counselors working in a wide variety of settings should be competent in providing grief counseling. The current CACREP (2024) standards include grief education under lifespan development, but grief education can be woven throughout all eight domains of the foundational counseling curriculum. This article explains the foundational grief counseling concepts of attachment theory, the dual process model of grief, meaning-making theory, and adaptive grieving styles. Included in this article are suggestions for infusing these foundational grief counseling concepts into each of the eight CACREP foundational counseling curriculum areas.

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Researchers applied a thematic analysis in this study to examine the nature of master-level counseling students’ (N = 19) intergroup anxiety (IA), a form of bias characterized by an anxious response to others based on negative views of that person’s identity (Stephan, 2014). Students cited stronger IA reactions toward persons with multiple identity traits (i.e., intersectionality). Traits chosen varied widely, some being dominant (e.g., White, male, able-bodied), and others, minoritized in nature (e.g., Black, Muslim, disabled). Thematic explanations for IA reactions varied, including a fear of client judgement, prior negative experiences with persons of certain traits, limited knowledge of clients’ …

Young Carers In Early Childhood— How Are Young Carers Represented In Broader Literature And What Factors Influence Dominant Representations Of Young Carers In Early Childhood In The Uk?: Scoping Review, Carly Ellicott, Alyson Norman, Helen Lloyd
School of Psychology
Contextualization of young carers in early childhood is complex. Biopsychosocial impacts of young caregiving are receiving growing interest, yet the voice and experience of society's youngest carers (0-5 years) remain absent from the literature. This scoping review explores representation of young carers in their early years (0-5 years), presented as part of a broader program of PhD research undertaken by the lead author. Aiming to influence systematic change in the way young carers are perceived and supported in society, further research is recommended. This will serve to better inform whole family support strategies in the context of young carer policy …

The Construction Of The Image Of The “Ideal Wife” In Intercultural Marriages: A Case Study On The Youtube Video “Younger Singapore Men Looking For Vietnam Brides, Li Jie
International Review of Humanities Studies
This study explores the process of constructing the image of the “ideal wife” in intercultural marriages, using the video Younger Singapore Men Looking for Vietnam Brides as a case study. It analyzes the economic and cultural motivations of Singaporean men in choosing Vietnamese wives. By applying Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and Henri Tajfel’s social identity theory, the study examines how Vietnamese brides are symbolized as the “ideal partner” and how this phenomenon reflects modern gender role conflicts and identity reconstruction. Through an analysis of interviews in the video and relevant comments, the research reveals the dynamic interaction between …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have challenged the assumption that families are invariable sources of support for cancer caregivers, noting that relationships with family members can have both positive and negative effects on caregiver well-being. This study expands upon prior literature to examine the relationship between cancer caregivers' perceptions of the quality of their family interactions and their symptoms of anxiety.
METHODS: We employed secondary analysis of baseline data from a multisite randomized clinical trial of an intervention for cancer caregivers conducted at 3 large academic palliative care clinics. We performed linear regression analyses to analyze the relationship between caregivers' perceptions of …

Journal of Appalachian Health
The establishment of a student-run mobile clinic in Morehead, Kentucky, led by students from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s (UKCOM) Rural Physician Leadership Program (RPLP), aims to address health inequities in rural Appalachian communities. This pilot program is designed to serve vulnerable populations, including the unhoused, by delivering free, accessible healthcare services directly to underserved populations. This program serves as a model for expanding access to healthcare in rural regions while promoting a collaborative, community-based approach to addressing social determinants of health.

Introduction: Suicide rates in the United States have increased over the past two decades, with rural areas, particularly the Appalachian Region, facing unique challenges that elevate suicide risk. These include economic hardships, social isolation, and limited access to mental health services.
Purpose: This study addresses critical gaps in understanding lifetime suicide risk in West Virginia (WV), a predominantly rural state entirely within the Appalachian Region. By identifying the factors driving urban-rural differences in suicide risk, this research seeks to inform interventions tailored to the state's distinct needs and provide insights applicable to the broader Appalachian Region

Comparative Outcomes Following Randomization To A Pilot Facebook-Based Hiv Prevention Intervention Among Appalachian Women Involved In The Criminal Legal System, Megan F. Dickson, Erika Pike, Michele Staton
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Rural Appalachian women who use drugs and are involved in the criminal legal system are at increased risk for health consequences (such as HIV/Hepatitis C). Service barriers throughout rural communities have prompted a need to examine the effectiveness of novel intervention delivery methods (e.g., social media).
Purpose: This study aims to determine if enhancing an existing HIV prevention intervention with additional modules delivered via Facebook improves service access by examining short-term outcomes among Appalachian women returning to the community following jail release.
Methods: Between 2019 and 2022, consenting women from two rural Appalachian jails were randomly selected, screened, interviewed, …

Psychology Student Research
The present study uses action research and critical trans theory frameworks to adapt a cognitive restructuring task to assist non-binary people in minimizing internalization from sexual objectification experiences (SOEs). Nine non-binary participants completed process charts documenting their experiences with SOEs. Participants also completed interviews about their experience with the process chart. Findings explored the nine categories of the process chart and the process of completing the process charts, highlighting the power participants reclaimed by interrogating objectifying sentiments and managing their environments in the wake of SOEs. We discuss utilizing our study’s process chart to better support marginalized people through SOEs.

Normal And Known: Identity And Community Amongst Queer Women Involved In The Social Reform Movements Of The Late 1800s And Early 1900s, Kathleen W. Johndrow
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The late 1800s and early 1900s saw a wave of social change in the United States, including increased urbanization, European immigration, the end of Reconstruction in the South, and new educational opportunities for women. These changes combined in various ways to contribute to ongoing social reform movements addressing education, health, and safety. Much of this reform was initiated by women, particularly those coming out of institutions of higher learning. The women described in scholarship have typically been white and of middle or upper class origins, and have been classified as being so dedicated to their work that they chose to …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
As part of a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington Engagement Award aimed at improving capacity to address maternal mental health in research, this collection of eight stories describes the unique experiences from caregivers (N = 2), patient/caregiver dyads (N = 2), healthcare stakeholders (N = 2), and community stakeholders (N = 2). Shared here are narratives dedicated to uplifting and supporting maternal mental health through storytelling. Elevating the voices and lived experiences of these diverse perspectives helps one understand the deeper and sometimes “invisible” needs of birthing people, thus moving beyond the status quo.
The Experience Of Help Seeking For African American Pastors In Personal Crises, Jason Leon Hanna
The Experience Of Help Seeking For African American Pastors In Personal Crises, Jason Leon Hanna
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. population faces enormous challenges coping with disease, financial stress, failure, and general mental health concerns. Rather than seeking care from psychotherapists, increasing numbers of people in religious communities seek help from clergy, who must then balance the needs of their constituents while navigating their own personal crises and need for support. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the meaning of help-seeking for African American clergy during personal crises, guided by Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 African American senior pastors of congregations in the United States. Study participants defined help-seeking …

Fine-Tuning Llms: Structural Fluency And Augmentation For The Great And Powerful Wizard Of Ai, Verónica C. Gonzales
Duke Law & Technology Review
The civil legal tradition carries assumptions, biases, and attitudes rooted in racism and ideologies intended to protect the (im)balance of power. This moment in history offers new versions of the same challenges with the integration of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and large language models (“LLMs”) into legal frameworks, and those critiques are being addressed in the legal discourse. Building on these perspectives, this moment also offers civil legal professionals a chance to engage in machine learning frameworks informed by social justice principles and accountable to measures of “equal justice for all.” The perception of fairness in the use of these tools …
