College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a mediation model of the relationship of core self-evaluations (CSEs) and life satisfaction in employed individuals with disabilities. This was a quantitative descriptive design using Hayes’s (2012) PROCESS macro for SPSS and multiple regression analysis. Two-hundred fifty-nine employed individuals with disabilities were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk and completed an online survey. Job satisfaction and social support were found to partially mediate the relationship between CSE and life satisfaction. The direct effect of CSE on life satisfaction remained significant after controlling for the effects of the mediators. Functional disability was not a …

The Experiences Of Disabled People In Physical Education, Wesley J. Wilson (Editor), Justin A. Haegele (Editor)

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Books

Bringing together a set of first- person accounts of physical education from the perspectives of disabled children and adults, this book puts disabled people’s voices in the foreground.

The book provides a rich set of case study material that deepens our understanding of the experiences of disabled people and challenges students, researchers, and practitioners to reflect critically upon their own positionality. The first part of the book discusses the ways in which disability has been conceptualized, how the voices of disabled people have sometimes been marginalized, and how nondisability power has historically framed the narratives of disabled people in physical …

The Lived Experiences Of Teachers Teaching High School Students With Learning Disabilities In An Online Learning Environment: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Michael John Ekers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to discover the shortfalls in professional development and training of online teachers as it pertained to students in high school with learning disabilities receiving their accommodations in an online learning environment in a mid-Atlantic school district. The theory guiding this study was the connectivism theory, introduced by George Siemens, as it described the overall framework for knowing how to learn, which remained the focal point of this study. What have online high school general education and special education teachers experienced in professional development or training to provide accommodations to students with learning …

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

It is imperative that researchers include the perspectives from key voices regarding early support practices, yet very few studies have included direct assessment of autistic individuals and parents of young autistic children. Despite emerging evidence of effectiveness of naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention (NDBI) strategies, it is currently unknown whether autistic adults and parents of autistic individuals know about NDBI and if they view NDBI strategies as socially valid practice. We aimed to explore the perceptions of autistic adults and parents of young autistic children regarding the social validity of NDBI strategies implemented in community preschool classrooms and their dissemination potential. …

The Power Of Choice: Comparing Asynchronous And Synchronous Learning, Heidi L. Henry, Kayla Newkirk, Lauren Guggenberger

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Using explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we investigated counseling student outcomes and attitudes in asynchronous versus synchronous learning modalities. We studied whether asynchronous or synchronous learning contributed to differences in student outcomes on a final project in an Advanced Human Growth and Development course. Using a Kruskal-Wallis H test, we found no significant differences on final project scores among groups categorized according to the number of asynchronous and synchronous activities completed. We also explored the attitudes of online counseling students towards synchronous and asynchronous learning. Thematic analysis of open-ended surveys of 53 counseling students revealed four themes: enhanced learning experiences, advantages …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Previous scholars in counselor education and supervision have conducted content analysis studies that uncover interesting trends and patterns about topics important to the field. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) national conference session descriptions (N = 8,395) from 1988 to 2021. Values, trends, and topics relevant to multicultural training, counselor education, supervision, professional orientation and ethics, and counselor training were most prominent while career and rehabilitation related topics were featured significantly less. Implications for ways ACES leadership and conference planners can improve national conferences and areas for future research …

Trauma-Informed Bilingual Counselor Education: Factors To Guide Professional Mental Health Training With Spanish-Speaking Students, Fernando Estrada, Miguel A. Arana

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Latine immigrants confront various forms of violence that increases their risk for traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a need to advance the training of counselors who can work with Spanish-speaking clients exposed to trauma. The goal of this study was to articulate a literature-based conceptualization of trauma-informed bilingual counselor education. The results of a content analysis facilitated a synthesis of the relevant scholarship that highlighted four main facets: (i) integrative translanguage pedagogy, (ii) immigrant trauma exposure and reaction, (iii) culturally responsive socio-emotional interventions, and (iv) bilingual supervisory alliance. These factors can help guide professional graduate training. Implications …

Site Supervisor Roles And Responsibilities: Counseling Programs’ Written Expectations, Justin D. Lauka, Amanda Mccarthy, Steven Moody, Minna Yoo

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Site supervisors play a vital role in training clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) students during their field work. While clear roles and responsibilities for site supervision is a professional and ethical requirement, the scope of these expectations remains ambiguous. This article provides baseline empirical data on the expectations of sites and site supervisors communicated through field experience handbooks of CACREP-accredited CMHC programs. The authors completed a qualitative content analysis that resulted in three key categories including Site and Site Supervisor Administrative Expectations, Clinical Supervision, and Site/Program Interaction. Implications for counseling programs and future research are discussed.

Wild Magic Farms: Increasing Student Engagement And Decreasing Academic Regression In Middle School Extended School Year Through Use Of A Role-Playing Game, Maryanne Cullinan

Educational Studies Dissertations

The Extended School Year (ESY) is a federal program that falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Law (2004) as part of Special Education in public schools in the United States. It is intended to help reduce regression in student progress towards Individualized Education Program goals. However, in New Hampshire, ESY struggles with a lack of clear goals, student buy-in and quality engagement. This study examined how a researcher designed role-playing game (RPG) could impact both summer academic regression and student engagement in a middle school ESY. Utilizing i-Ready testing (n=13) data and attendance data (n=9), this study compared …
