Religious Employment And The Tensions Between Liberty And Equality, R. Shawn Gunnarson, James C. Phillips, Christopher A. Bates
BYU Law Review
Located in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an exemption for religious employers that is often misunderstood. Often courts and commentators mischaracterize it as a narrow privilege for religious employers to hire people of the same religion. But the statute’s text says otherwise. This article resolves interpretive debates about the meaning and application of the religious employer exemption through a close textualist reading that discovers a new understanding of the structure of Title VII. Our approach applies the tools of textualism, the prevailing theory of statutory interpretation. Paying attention to the text and structure of Title …
Rural Solar Rights, Troy A. Rule
Rural Solar Rights, Troy A. Rule
BYU Law Review
Utility-scale solar projects on private land—the fastest growing form of energy development in the United States today—generate low-cost, carbon-free electricity and can invigorate rural economies. However, they are also attracting unprecedented local opposition as local governments across the country adopt ordinances prohibiting or severely restricting solar farm development within their jurisdictions. Fortunately, state legislatures have multiple means of preventing municipal governments from unreasonably restricting solar energy. Among other things, states can legislatively preempt excessive local solar siting restrictions, manage more solar project permitting at the state government level, or statutorily require municipalities to classify solar farms as a “permitted use” …

In a nation of stark inequalities, the Roberts Court is often portrayed as siding with the wealthy and powerful. Many scholars argue that the Court has abandoned legal principles altogether and instead simply chooses winners and losers based on the conservative majority’s political agenda. Meanwhile, scholarly examinations of the legal reasoning underlying the Court’s most impactful decisions are largely confined to specific subject areas. Such compartmentalized analyses, though, overlook broader patterns in the Court’s rulings that transcend substantive legal boundaries.
This Article bridges the gap in these parallel conversations by connecting the Roberts Court’s reasoning across many legal fields with …
Weaponization Of Taxation: Sovereign Tax Immunity As A National Security Tool, Vinita R. Singh
Weaponization Of Taxation: Sovereign Tax Immunity As A National Security Tool, Vinita R. Singh
BYU Law Review
Amidst calls to reconceptualize taxation as a national security tool, legislators are reexamining how the United States taxes foreign governments. Federal income taxation of foreign governments—what this Article terms “the law of immunity from taxation” or “sovereign tax immunity”—strongly influences whether and how foreign governments pursue investment in the United States. This impact on international business transactions indicates sovereign tax immunity has the potential to be a powerful national security tool. Yet, despite its import, the law of immunity from taxation has been underexplored and undertheorized. This Article steps into this gap in discourse by challenging the way recent legislative …

The Mansion That Disney Built: Revitalizing Antitrust Enforcement In The Film Industry, Drew Chandler
BYU Law Review
The Paramount Decrees, for over sixty years, barred the major film studios from anticompetitive practices like vertical integration and block-booking. The Department of Justice’s decision to sunset the Decrees in 2020 came prematurely, with the movie industry today rocked by major mergers, the advent of streaming, the pandemic, lessened output due to industry strikes, and changing consumer tastes. True, the industry has changed since 1948, but those very changes call for regulatory intervention to avoid repeating the problems of the past.
For example, Disney’s recent merger and acquisition activity, together with the dominance of its in-house streaming service Disney+, is …
Book Review: Move Slowly And Build Bridges: Mastodon, The Fediverse, And The Struggle For Democratic Social Media, Ben Pettis
Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Put simply, today’s landscape of social media is a bit of a mess. A swath of recent scholarship has rightly tracked major shifts in social media, including the rise of walled gardens, enshittification (Doctorow, 2023), numerous privacy concerns (Couldry and Mejias, 2019; Marwick, 2023), and the general rise of what Shoshana Zuboff (2020) has termed ‘surveillance capitalism’. Though social media has undoubtedly brought many benefits, it is increasingly difficult to overlook its negative underbelly. Given this context, Robert Gehl’s recent book, Move Slowly and Build Bridges makes a timely contribution to studies of new media …

Background and aims: Truncating variants in the TTN gene (TTNtv) are the most common genetic cause of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) but also occur as incidental findings in the general population. This study investigated factors associated with the clinical manifestation of TTNtv.
Methods: An international multicentre retrospective observational study was performed in families with TTNtv-related DCM. Shared frailty models were used to estimate associations of variant characteristics with lifetime risk of DCM, and logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for individual-level clinical risk factor profiles (cardiac conditions, cardiovascular comorbidities, lifestyle) and DCM.
Results: A total of 3158 subjects in 1043 …

Background/Objectives: Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapies have significantly improved outcomes in metastatic melanoma. However, immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and persistent chronic toxicities (CTs) among this emerging survivor population likely influence different facets of quality of life. This study characterized CT, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), diet, physical activity and gut microbiome features in a cohort of long-term survivors with a history of ICB-treated metastatic melanoma.
Methods: Forty-eight patients with a history of metastatic melanoma who initiated ICB treatment at least 3 years earlier and were not currently on treatment were prospectively enrolled from a melanoma survivorship clinic. Participants completed screening …

Previous research has shown that attitudes toward political issues have a significant influence on voting behavior (Bukari et al., 2022). However, not all issues exert equal influence, and some may have a more direct impact on voting behavior than others. This study applies network analysis within the framework of the PBS model (Brandt & Sleegers, 2021) to explore the issues that most strongly shaped voters’ choices in Indonesia’s 2014 and 2019 elections. To answer the research question, we used data from a national survey (n = 962) conducted in 2018. The analysis was conducted by evaluating the shortest path values …

Background
Goals-of-care (GOC) discussions align medical treatment with older adults’ preferences, yet are hindered by communication barriers, provider discomfort, and misinformation. Video-based decision aids improve understanding and reduce decision conflict, though data on their use in older populations remain limited. This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of video-based decision aids in improving GOC discussions and decision-making outcomes among older adults. Methods
For this systematic review, a medical librarian conducted a literature search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and Cochrane from database inception through April 2025. Landlord initiated a holdover proceeding, claiming exemption from GCEL as a "small landlord." Tenant moved to dismiss, arguing landlord's failure to comply with LLC law publication requirements, misdescription of premises, exceeding the "small landlord" unit count, and non-compliance of the predicate notice and petition with GCEL's ownership disclosure requirements. The court denied tenant's motion, ruling that late compliance with LLC law cures the defect, that premises description issues were amendable or triable, and that GCEL requires ownership disclosure in the petition (which can be amended) but not the predicate notice. The court granted landlord's motion to amend its affirmation and …

Retailers are increasingly using augmented reality (AR) to enhance the customer experience. This research investigates how AR service experiences contribute to customer co-creation. Two experimental studies using real AR applications and PLS-SEM provide evidence. Study 1, utilizing IKEA Place and WannaKicks, examines whether network externality enhances experience quality and whether customer autonomy influences this effect. Results show that network externality enhances experience quality, but the effect weakens at higher levels of autonomy, indicating that autonomous customers rely less on network cues. Study 2, utilizing Warby Parker and Dulux Visualizer, examines whether experience quality influences co-creation through engagement and whether the …

AIMS: Research study charters facilitate shared governance and power sharing with research partners when developed collaboratively and early on in a study. Study charters are negotiated and developed on a study-by-study basis, offering insight into study-specific dynamics between research partners and investigators, as well as the factors that each identify as important for their collaboration. This review aimed to map and synthesize existing evidence on the development, structure, and implementation of research study charters used in patient-engaged research.
METHODS: We searched peer-reviewed literature published worldwide in English between January 2019 and January 2025.
RESULTS: Our final sample consisted of 17 …

The ICESat-2 satellite collects LiDAR data along linear orbital tracks using a photon-counting green wavelength (532.27 nm) instrument. The utility of combining ICESat-2 data with satellite imagery for training and subsequently applying satellite-derived bathymetry models to provide estimates of shallow water depth is well-established. However, automating and improving the accuracy of the identification of ICESat-2 photon events (PEs) representing bathymetry remains a challenge. This article presents an algorithm for automated extraction of PEs reflected from the ocean floor (rather than the ocean surface or noise in the water column). The algorithm is unique in examining both the density of PEs …

Cache-Conscious Sparse Matrix Dense Matrix Multiplication On Gpus, Haoqiang Guo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Over the past decade, high-performance deep learning has evolved into a critical research domain, driven by the demand for efficient models and high inference throughput. Deep learning architectures have shifted from stacked convolutional layers to transformer-based models, while pruning techniques and graph-structured data have established sparse matrix–dense matrix multiplication (SpMM) as a fundamental kernel—particularly in graph neural networks (GNNs). Modern GPUs, with their massive parallelism and high-bandwidth memory, offer immense potential for accelerating these workloads. While SpMM implementations using the compressed sparse row (CSR) format remain common to avoid conversion overhead, preprocessing-based methods have recently demonstrated superior potential. In GNN …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 2.9 million people in the world, exerting a significant economic and societal burden. The disease is increasingly identified among populations considered as uncommonly affected. MS is reported in all regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) member states in Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific, affecting all ethnicities while exhibiting substantially variable prevalences. Countries with high MS prevalence and some with moderate frequencies generally have economically better structured healthcare systems. Nevertheless, health disparities in these countries are accentuated by suboptimal accessibility of care for their minorities, immigrants and …

Background: Patient and public involvement and engagement can improve the relevance and impact of research yet ‘impact’ is often framed narrowly around study findings rather than the experiences of those involved. Understanding how involvement affects individuals is important, particularly in areas such as mental health where there is significant potential for power differentials within the research process. The DeStress-II project co-developed a training resource to help primary care practitioners support people experiencing poverty-related mental distress. Community Partners with lived experience were integral to the project, contributing to training delivery, online resource co-production, and implementation analysis. Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
A Neutrosophic Baire Space extends the concept of Baire Space from classical topology to the realm of neutrosophic topology which deals with sets and spaces where truth, falsehood and indeterminancy are explicitly considered. In this paper the concept of neutrosophic σ - baire spaces are introduced in Neutrosophic topological spaces. Also Neutrosophic σ - dense, Neutrosophic σ - nowhere dense, Neutrosophic σ -first category and Neutrosophic σ - second category sets are defined. Several characterizations of neutrosophic σ - baire spaces are investigated and explained using examples and the conditions under which a neutrosophic topological space becomes a neutrosophic σ …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Graph theory has been widely used in exemplifying relational structure, and a greater generalization to fuzzy and neutrosophic space enables the exemplification of uncertainty, indeterminacy, and inconsistency in complex systems. Some of these extensions include the neutrosophic fuzzy graphs that provide a more detailed description of the loose relations between the vertices and the edges. However, unlike in classical graph theory, where the concepts of matching and perfect matching are well developed, very little has been studied on how the two concepts can be extended to neutrosophic fuzzy graphs. To seal this gap, the current paper develops and defines the …
