Bridging Awareness And Access: Outdoor Recreation And Physical Activity In Eastern Kentucky, Timothy Mckay
Theses and Dissertations--Kinesiology and Health Promotion
Physical inactivity remains a pressing challenge in Appalachian Kentucky, where high obesity rates intersect with limited access to structured exercise facilities. This dissertation investigated the extent to which participation in outdoor recreation supports adherence to physical activity (PA) recommendations and explored community awareness of local public lands. Surveys from 52 adult participants in Knox County revealed strong engagement in outdoor activity, with participation significantly predicting compliance with national PA guidelines. Educational attainment was also associated with higher rates of PA compliance, pointing to the influence of literacy and awareness in health behaviors. Reliability testing of the Outdoor Physical Activity Attitude …

These strategies increase confidence in communication partners and aide in development of meaningful relationships between students with diverse communication needs.
The Journey To Becoming An Authentic Leader In A Technical Nursing Institute In Egypt Using Autoethnographic And Descriptive Phenomenological Approaches Through A Three-Article Style Dissertation., Sylvia Basta
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
Authentic leaders in nursing higher education significantly influence the organizational climate, fellow faculty members, and, ultimately, students. They develop in a climate of well-being, allowing them to reflect self-awareness, have a balanced approach to processing self-relevant information, have an internalized moral perspective, and have relational transparency. Positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment are the foundations of this climate. Moreover, authentic leaders grow through their supported Psychological Capacities (PsyCap) of hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism. Exploring the essence of developing into an authentic leader within an Egyptian nursing higher education context is addressed in this dissertation, which consists of three …

“Hard To Rememeber, Then Hard To Forget:” A Qualitative Exploration Into The Attitudes And Lived Experiences Of Black People With Black Names, Destin L. Mizelle
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Naming practices within the Black American community are vibrant and deeply rooted in cultural traditions and shared values. Much like other ethnic groups, these names tell stories, reflect heritage, and connect individuals to their community, making each choice meaningful and significant. However, due to the systemic effects of anti-Blackness, Black Americans often have a complex relationship with their names. While previous research has primarily utilized quantitative methodologies focusing on the negative associations and consequences of having a Black name, this study aims to amplify the voices of Black people who possess Black names. Using reflexive thematic analysis, this qualitative study …

Computing educators' emotion display is regulated by various norms and conventions. These (unwritten) rules affect which emotions educators feel comfortable expressing to different extents when students can perceive such displays. We draw on emotions and norms literature to investigate higher education computing educators' perceptions of what kinds of norms they have as criteria when considering which emotions they are (not) comfortable showing when teaching. Based on the qualitative content analysis of 22 interviews with computing educators from seven countries, we present various–sometimes connected or conflicting–norms that influence emotion display. These norms comprise moral, national, societal, professional, and affiliation norms that …

Through verbal protocol analysis, I cataloged and described their multimodal reading comprehension strategies. Complementing retrospective interviews, reader-computer interaction videos, and written pre- and post-knowledge reports accounted for how they read strategically. Strategies were coded to provide insights …
Pathways To Financial Wellness: Using Intersectionality Theory To Understand Black Women’S Financial Socialization, Courtney J. Wright
Pathways To Financial Wellness: Using Intersectionality Theory To Understand Black Women’S Financial Socialization, Courtney J. Wright
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Black women experience high levels of financial vulnerability and consistently exhibit poor financial outcomes across the literature; however, few studies have investigated Black women’s financial socialization processes and outcomes. As a function of gendered racial marginalization, Black women occupy a unique standpoint that may influence their financial socialization experiences. Therefore, research that investigates Black women’s financial socialization and perceived financial capability, responsibility, and well-being is warranted.
Within this dual-manuscript style dissertation, the first manuscript investigates the sources, content, and methods of Black women’s family financial socialization messages. Using a critical-constructivist research paradigm and Reflexive Thematic Analysis for data analysis, findings …

The study implements Critical Race Mixed Methodology to combine survey data for a wide reach with interview data for detailed exploration. The study involved eight Black women science …
The Table, Ruichu Yu
The Table, Ruichu Yu
Theses
This thesis explores the relationship between identity formation, emotional rupture, and social performance through the symbolic framework of the dining table to examine how everyday rituals shape and destabilize the self. Beginning with a personal history of crafting prosthetic ears at the request of the artist’s otologist father, the project emerges from an initial desire to heal others and confronts the emotional weight of restoration. As the work evolves, this act of repair becomes a catalyst for the artist’s own confrontation with psychological fragmentation, shifting the focus from medical mending to the deconstruction of selfhood. Drawing on theories of performativity …

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory sensation that commonly co-occurs with hearing loss. Both tinnitus and hearing loss can impact the quality of life, emotional well-being, and cognitive functioning of the affected individuals. While previous studies have highlighted structural alterations in hearing loss and/or tinnitus, the fundamental neural mechanisms underpinning tinnitus severity remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a voxel-based morphometry to investigate gray matter (GM) volume differences among groups of participants with varying tinnitus severity and hearing status, and controls within a large sample. We observed reduced GM volume in the left anterior insula and right planum polare …

Background: In available comparative studies, Dutch transgender youth have consistently shown better psychosocial well-being compared to those in other countries. Therefore, the Netherlands (N.L.) could be considered a gold-standard—though imperfect—comparator for transgender youth research. The United States (U.S.) is heterogeneous in its policies and practices impacting transgender youth, and policies are in flux. This study examines similarities and differences between U.S. and Dutch policies, practices, and contexts relevant to the well-being of transgender adolescents. Methods: A three-stage Delphi procedure was conducted with expert panels in the N.L. and U.S. Results: This process identified candidate mechanisms driving differences in outcomes for …

An increasing number of studies find that water sharing—the non-market transfer of privately held water between households—is a ubiquitous informal practice around the world and a primary way that households respond to water insecurity. Yet, a key question about household water sharing remains: is water sharing a viable path that can help advance household water security? Or should water sharing be understood as a symptom of water insecurity in wait for more formalized solutions? Here, we address this question by applying Sen’s entitlement framework in an integrative review of empirical scholarship on household water sharing. Our review shows that when …

Social media offers a plethora of strangers cum friends whose photo shopped images seem idealistic and more appealing than one's primary partner. Due to the physical absence and lack of non-verbal cues, online communications can quickly become aggressive and emotionally intimate. Emotional intimacy between online friends is considered a betrayal in a dyadic relationship. To protect mates from external relationship threats, romantic partners may request and/or coerce their significant other for social media account passwords. In a sample of 299 adults (women = 246) between18 and 72 years (M = 21.12, SD = 5.39), we explored the participants’ attitudes toward …

Background: Globally, women consume less alcohol than men, but alcohol consumption among women has declined less in recent years than among men. Drinking rates and alcohol-related harms vary substantially across population groups of women, and sexual minority women (eg, lesbian, bisexual, and queer) are at notably high risk. An emerging body of literature suggests that in addition to minority stress (eg, stigma, discrimination), drinking norms and drinking cultures likely influence sexual minority women’s drinking. Almost no research has explored these factors as possible targets of interventions. Sober curiosity is a rapidly growing wellness movement that may be particularly salient for …

Cultural Learning Of Metacognition: Evidence From Blind Individuals, Marissa Renee Bamberger, Lindsay N. Harris
CISLL Publications
The cultural origins hypothesis posits conscious metacognitive abilities in humans are acquired through cultural selection facilitated by cultural learning. Interpersonal broadcasting, much of which is nonverbal, is hypothesized to be one conduit of cultural learning. Thus, individuals with no or limited access to nonverbal information, such as blind persons, should have metacognitive abilities different from those of the larger culture. To test this prediction, we asked blind (n = 23) and sighted (n = 20) adults to recall the modality (Spoken or Written) of words whose definitions they had learned, and to indicate their degree of confidence in …
