Multi-Modal Framework For Autism Severity Assessment Using Spatio-Temporal Graph Transformers, Kush Gupta, Amir Aly, Emmanuel Ifeachor
Multi-Modal Framework For Autism Severity Assessment Using Spatio-Temporal Graph Transformers, Kush Gupta, Amir Aly, Emmanuel Ifeachor
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains challenging, as it often relies on subjective evaluations and traditional methods using fMRI data. This paper proposes an innovative multi-modal framework that leverages spatiotemporal graph transformers to assess ASD severity using skeletal and optical flow data from the MMASD dataset. Our approach captures movement synchronization between children with ASD and therapists during play therapy interventions. The framework integrates a spatial encoder, a temporal transformer, and an I3D network for comprehensive motion analysis. Through this multi-modal approach, we aim to deliver reliable ASD severity scores, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and offering a scalable, robust alternative to …

Developing An Artificial Intelligence Framework For Identifying Fusion Blood-Based Biomarkers In Alzheimer's Disease, Ali H. Al-Nuaimi, Mohammed Kamal Nsaif, Shaymaa Al-Juboori
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an irreversible neurological disorder, a major cause of disability among the elderly, with no effective therapeutic options currently available. It is an asymp-tomatic disease in the prodromal stages and begins many years before clinical appearances. Early diagnosis of AD allows patients to obtain appropriate healthcare assistance, accelerating the development of new medications. A biomarker that evaluates the alterations in the brain cells produced by AD in its preliminary periods might be significant for its early identification. Blood-based biomarkers (BBBMs) facilitate the early detection of AD. The BBBMs detection procedure is cost-efficient and minimally invasive. The aim …

Artificial Intelligence Powered System For Epilepsy Detection Using Eeg Biomarkers, Ali H. Al-Nuaimi, Shaymaa Al-Juboori
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
One of the most prevalent neurological disorders is epilepsy. Epileptic seizures can occurrepeatedly in people with the condition for no recognisable reason. The diagnostic methodsdependent on EEG are promising. EEG has uncovered the dynamic functioning of all brain areasthroughout time. Its low cost, non-invasiveness, and simply make it crucial for clinicalevaluations of brain function. Integrating multiple EEG biomarkers as a compound biomarkercould provide a high performance that may accelerate the diagnosis speeds. Artificial intelligencetechniques such as machine learning and deep learning provide a significant result in healthcareapplications. Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), and Neural Network (NN) wereevaluated using a …

This dependency spans across individuals, businesses, and organisations including governments who are relying on cyberspace for various services, ranging from email to social networking, and from cloud computing to ecommerce and financial automated process and transactions. These services are vulnerable and face sophisticated cyber threats, risks and attacks, and potentially can result in financial losses and compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability …
Metamorphosis: An Evaluation Of The Adaptation And Re-Use Potential Of Suburban Housing For Older Homeowners, Michelle Moore
Metamorphosis: An Evaluation Of The Adaptation And Re-Use Potential Of Suburban Housing For Older Homeowners, Michelle Moore
Masters
Ireland’s population is ageing at a rate that is more than twice the EU average. Public policy in Ireland aims to support older persons to age-in-place. Over 80% of older adults in Ireland live in an owner-occupied home, following many decades of public policy promoting home ownership as the tenure of choice. Limited research has been undertaken on the housing adaptation options that could result in privately-owned homes being made more suitable for the evolving needs of the rapidly ageing demographic. This thesis addresses the hypothesis that, with the provision of an appropriate suite of enablers, older homeowners can be …
Meditation Techniques And Their Relationship To Psychotic-Like And Mystical Experiences, Timothy Palmer
Meditation Techniques And Their Relationship To Psychotic-Like And Mystical Experiences, Timothy Palmer
School of Psychology Theses
Meditation practice has been associated with benefits but also adverse experiences from anxiety to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) and even psychosis. The overarching aim was to identify how different types of meditation techniques (varying in bodily focus) differentially relate to psychotic-like experiences and cognitive abilities, including interoceptive awareness, affective awareness and decision-making. For this, I conducted two correlational studies and an intervention study.Different systems have been proposed for classifying meditation techniques. Nash et al’s (2013) approach categorises techniques by goal: Null Directed Methods (NDM), which aim for an “empty” state; Cognitive Directed Methods (CDM), aimed at an enhanced cognitive state; and …
Predictive Perception In Autism, Robert Harlow
Predictive Perception In Autism, Robert Harlow
School of Psychology Theses
This thesis investigates how predictive perception, motor coordination, and neurotype differences influences social perception in autism. It explores how these mechanisms contribute to social difficulties faced by autistic people, through the lens of the double empathy problem and second-person neuroscience.Chapter 2 examined how spoken intentions and visual evidence guide predictive social perception. Across four experiments, results supported a dual-process model whereby top-down expectations shape early perception but are overridden by visual input once motion begins. This led to the ‘kinematic dominance hypothesis’, suggesting motion cues dominate perception once movement begins due to their higher precision.Chapter 3 used high-resolution active motion …
Understanding Truth And Reconciliations Processes In An Art-Based Community Project Which Addresses Experiences Of Iatrogenic Harm In Mental Health Services, Joseph French
School of Psychology Theses
Research suggests that some service users may have harmful experiences of mental health services. Truth and reconciliations processes have addressed systemic harm in other contexts. However, these are complex and may have positive and negative impacts. Eight interviews were conducted with seven members of a community arts group which uses a truth and reconciliations approach. Members create art to express harmful experiences of the mental health system and display it at exhibitions where mental health professionals are invited to engage with it. The researcher used a constructivist grounded theory informed approach to understand how artists experienced a truth and reconciliations …

School of Psychology Theses
AbstractRefugees face unique and traumatising challenges to their mental health across multiple socio-political climates. Services are providing inequitable support for refugees, which lack appreciation of transcultural conceptualisations of mental distress, amongst a backdrop of social injustice. Refugees were employed as Co-researchers to co-produce every stage of this project. Reflexive Thematic Analysis was utilised in this study to examine experiences and learning needs of 79 Trainee Clinical Psychologists (TCP’s) in their survey responses. Novel training guidelines, to be accessed via ‘supplementary materials’, were co-produced alongside scoped learning needs, which contribute to health research and practice. Four interrelated overarching themes became evident. …
“We've Just Kind Of Woven In All These Different Ways Of Keeping Him Close By” A Narrative Analysis Of How Children And Their Surviving Parent Co-Construct Continuing Bonds Following Parental Death, Miriam Summers
School of Psychology Theses
Continuing bonds research has predominantly focused on adults and considered from an individualistic perspective; consequently, little is known about how such bonds may be developed relationally within families. This study aimed to explore how parentally bereaved children and their parent/caregiver co-construct continuing bonds. Eight families were recruited, and parent/caregivers and their children were interviewed together. Narrative analysis explored semantic themes and interactional processes. The findings highlighted that continuing bonds are co-constructed through regular joint remembering, family acts of remembrance, joint connecting through objects and shared interpretations of signs from the deceased. Constructive interactional processes included collaboration, agreement and sharing positive …

Children’S Outdoor Play Injuries: How Real Are Parental Concerns Of Danger In Outdoor Play?, Fiona Armstrong, David Gaul
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Risky play can be defined as any play that is thrilling or exciting, involving risk of injury [Sandseter, E. B. H. (2007). Categorising risky play—How can we identify risk-taking in children's play? European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, 15(2), 237–252.]. Risky play has been associated with danger and increased risk of injury, yet there is limited evidence relating to the prevalence of injuries because of play, with existing data mainly related to home and sports-related injuries [Gilmartin, S., Barrett, M., Bennett, M., Begley, C., Ni Chroinin, C., O’Toole, P., & Blackburn, C. (2022). The effect of national public health measures …
Understanding Urban Cultural Festivals As Social Infrastructure, Bernadette Quinn
Understanding Urban Cultural Festivals As Social Infrastructure, Bernadette Quinn
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This paper is concerned with the role that urban cultural festivals play in enhancing the quality and vitality of social life. It acknowledges that their reputation has become tarnished in recent years and that festivals now frequently feature in debates because they are charged with inciting tensions, exclusions and contestations. However, of note here is that cities tend to narrowly conceive of festivals as temporarily bounded moments of commodifiable spectacle. The fact that festivals function, on an ongoing manner, as embedded, sustained practices capable of supporting urban social living in numerous ordinary ways is rarely acknowledged, much less prioritised. This …

Ceo Turnover And Shareholder Awareness In Cartel Cases, Catarina Marvão, Giancarlo Spagnolo
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
We examine the consequences of cartel detection for the careers of CEOs in the US and the EU; the characteristics of colluding CEOs (e.g., tenure, age); and shareholders’ awareness of management misbehavior. Additionally, we examine at what level cartel decisions are made according to the available case documents. We find that only 4% of all CEOs in convicted EC cartel firms (1998-2020) are explicitly fired due to collusion, and that 30% of CEOs indicted in DOJ cartels (1985-2011) are fired. Often, CEOs remain in place or take on other high-level positions in the firm. This suggests that (most) shareholders are …

Ontological Machines: Subjectivity And Relational Desire In Immersive And Interactive Environments, Toby Chanter
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This practice-based artistic research focuses on two contemporary spaces; namely the pedagogical spaces of healthcare Simulation Based Education (SBE), and the exhibition spaces of installation art. These seemingly unrelated activities share a range of technological and operational similarities that render their combined study under the banner of ‘immersive and interactive environments’ both novel and necessary. The lack of broad engagement with questions of representation, aesthetics, and affect is conspicuous in an educational practice that is reliant on, and implemented through, a network of overtly visual mediums, material technologies, and sensory modalities. In healthcare SBE, clinical skills are acquired, and medical …

Facilitating Student Engagement In Elementary Science Classrooms With Reformed Teaching Principles, Nathaniel Bryant
Facilitating Student Engagement In Elementary Science Classrooms With Reformed Teaching Principles, Nathaniel Bryant
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Science performance among elementary school students in the United States has stagnated in recent years. To address this issue, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were introduced, advocating for a reform in science education. Traditionally, hands-on laboratory work has been used to help students understand scientific concepts through a "learn by doing" approach. However, students often become disengaged during practical work, as following a set procedure to replicate scientific phenomena does not reflect how scientists approach problems in their daily practice. It is now argued that hands-on laboratories should not only involve observation or manipulation of materials and equipment but …
