Design Facilitation Skills: Discrepancies Between Research Focus And Industry Needs In Us Job Postings, Wenqi Zheng, Mauricio Mejia, Catalina Cortes
Nordes Conference Series
In design, designers often act as facilitators, helping cross-functional teams capture, evaluate, and integrate diverse ideas to create improved products. While the broader application of facilitation has been extensively explored, the specific demand for design facilitation in the industry remains understudied. This study bridges the gap by exploring the call for design facilitation in the U.S. job market. Through a content analysis of job postings and a novel approach for tracking skill trends over time, we identify key design facilitation-related skill employers seek, uncovering four patterns. We also discuss implications for design education, proposing curriculum changes to better prepare students …

Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) can significantly impact a patient’s quality of care, increase organizational costs, and pose significant risks for patient safety. According to the United Hospital Fund, “Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs)—also known as pressure ulcers or bed sores—can pose significant problems for both the patient and hospital. Being an injury to the skin or underlying tissue, HAPIs can be painful, cause infections, hinder recovery, and prolong a patient’s time in the hospital” (United Hospital Fund, 2025). This quality improvement (QI) project took place in a small, urban southern California hospital with a high incidence and prevalence rate of HAPIs …

Kid Power: Mastering Asthma Management To Keep Hospitals Away!, Kriste L. Moret
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Pediatric asthma remains a leading cause of preventable hospitalizations, particularly in California’s Central Valley, where environmental and health disparities worsen symptoms. Many children are discharged without understanding their Asthma Action Plan (AAP) or feeling confident in symptom management.
Context: On a unit in a community hospital in this high-risk region, asthma-related admissions persisted. Gaps in discharge education highlighted the need for a structured intervention. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Improvement (MFI) guided this effort.
Intervention: A nurse-led, developmentally appropriate asthma education bundle was implemented. Teaching began on admission and was reinforced using teach-back, color-coded AAPs, culturally …

Enhancing Patient Safety: Fall Prevention Through Video Education, Fithawit T. Zere
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Globally, hospital falls remain a leading cause of injuries, increased costs, short and long-term disability and emotional impact on patients/families. Despite required prevention measures, a local hospital experienced rising fall rates during 2024 (n=71);13 of these occurred in the Med-telemetry microsystem. Although multiple strategies and financial investments occurred, nursing compliance with the fall prevention “bundle” remained suboptimal.
Context: Thirteen falls resulted in $182,000 in 2024. A quality improvement (QI) project was initiated over 12 weeks after routine audits revealed inconsistency in application of several components of the required bundle: particularly, the fall prevention video upon admission.
Interventions: A …

A Force To Be Reckoned: Strategic Equity Sense Leadership Of Unit-Level Higher Education Leaders, Jin M. Mims
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) movement in 2020 pressured higher education institutions to address their oppressive and exclusive systems. As these institutions communicated their diversity, equity, and inclusion, (DEI) commitments and processes, it was those who took charge to facilitate the operational and cultural change for their respective area through the DEI lens, those who assumed DEI roles in their designated units, actualized the ground-level work of designing and implementing DEI programs and policies to produce the institutional progress reported by the university’s executive leadership. I will refer to those change agents as Unit-level DEI Officers (UDOs). Meanwhile, the current body of …
A Convergent Parallel Mixed Method Design Analysis Of Sponsorship And The Advancement Of Women In The Workplace, Shaparak Malek-Morvai
A Convergent Parallel Mixed Method Design Analysis Of Sponsorship And The Advancement Of Women In The Workplace, Shaparak Malek-Morvai
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Sponsorship is vital for advancing women's careers but is often inconsistently applied. Limited programs for women seeking leadership roles and a lack of sponsors can hinder progress. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data from 73 participants with qualitative insights. Sponsors advocate for protégés, emphasizing visibility, promotion, and networking, while mentorship offers guidance and coaching. Many leadership roles confuse sponsorship with mentorship, as noted by Helms et al. (2016). However, the key difference lies in influence. The study had four objectives: to explore women's perceptions of sponsorship, analyze how roles and tenure influence these perceptions, enhance discussions …

I'M Okay Being Square In A Round Hole: A Black Feminist Autoethnography Traversing Workplace Oppression, Sense Of Self, And Resistance, Maria A. Duffy
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
Although Black women are an important part of the U.S. workforce, they continue to experience discrimination at the workplace. Prior research has examined Black women workers’ resilience and strength (e.g., Allen, 2020; Ross et al., 2020; Woods-Giscombe et al., 2023). Researchers also have explored different types of institutional and interpersonal discrimination that have harmed Black women---especially those with white collar jobs (e.g., Bloch et al., 2021; Patton, 2010; Weiner et al., 2019). However, more research is needed on how discrimination at blue-collar workplaces can affect Black women’s intrapersonal communication, self-concept, and co-cultural communication. In this project, I explore the intersectional …
Rhetorical Analysis Of Kristen Bell's Articulation Of Imperfect Motherhood On Armchair Expert., Sarah J. Neff
Rhetorical Analysis Of Kristen Bell's Articulation Of Imperfect Motherhood On Armchair Expert., Sarah J. Neff
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how Kristen Bell’s articulation of imperfect motherhood, as heard on the popular podcast Armchair Expert, contributes to broader social discourses surrounding motherhood, empowering some mothers while inadvertently constraining others. Using rhetorical analysis grounded in Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, facework theory, and McGee’s theory of fragments, this study explores Bell’s discourse and performance of motherhood within the podcast medium. The podcasting medium provides a rich source for rhetorical analysis due to the long form interview content, and emotionally nuanced content, leading to a stronger connection with the audience. This is evident with the new headlines that follow Bell’s appearance …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Numerous studies have been undertaken on technological innovation in the classroom; however there is a lack of study on innovation at the organizational level and there is also a lack of focus on experiences of individuals leading the transformation. Individuals who are spearheading change can gain and offer valuable insights into their behaviors during the change process by reflecting on and examining their interactions, inclinations, and objectives. Furthermore, it is crucial to take into account the organization's culture and structure in order to comprehend how leadership operates throughout periods of change. This analytical and evocative autoethnography documents the experiences of …

Open Educational Resources In Elder Refugee Esl Contexts: Instructor And Administrator Perspectives, Alison Elliott
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Open Educational Resources (OER) offer a promising solution to educational disparities through their free, adaptable, and shareable nature, fostering collaboration and innovation in pedagogy. While OER, alongside Open Educational Practices (OEP), has seen a vibrant and growing integration within K-16 foreign language contexts, its application within adult English as a Second Language (ESL) education remains significantly under-researched. Adult ESL contexts, especially those serving refugees, present unique challenges: learners have experienced trauma, interrupted education, and have urgent practical English needs, while adult educators contend with inconsistent training, demanding part-time workloads, and a fragmented professional ecosystem that limits professional development and research …
Exploring The Impact Of Inclusion Initiatives On The Retention And Engagement Of People Of Color In Nonprofit Organizations: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Kesha Carter
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the impact of inclusion initiatives on the retention and engagement of people of color (POC) in nonprofit organizations. Grounded in Ray’s (2019) theory of racialized organizations, this study examined how organizational structures and practices influence inclusive workplace cultures for POC employees. Although diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies have gained traction, many nonprofit organizations struggle to move beyond performative efforts and address the systemic inequities that shape POC experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 full-time POC employees working in nonprofit organizations across New York State to capture their lived …
