Libraries are increasingly involved in supporting and facilitating case competitions, leading to competitions that emphasize decision-making and understanding of a larger ecosystem of information. This paper examines existing literature on the topics of librarian support for case competitions, the growing trend of library-led case competitions, and the expanded role of libraries in support of entrepreneurs, students, and faculty in entrepreneurial programs. The conversation is expanded through a discussion of the Midwest Entrepreneurship Case Competition (MECC), a library-led case competition that prioritized the participation of undergraduate students and grew from a local to a regional event. Vendor engagement, case development, competition …

Historical Perspective And Contribution Of Aquaculture To The Amr Global Pandemic, Miriam Reverter, Sarahi Vega-Heredía, Philip Warburton Mar 2025

Historical Perspective And Contribution Of Aquaculture To The Amr Global Pandemic, Miriam Reverter, Sarahi Vega-Heredía, Philip Warburton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The global rise in the emergence and spread of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) that have developed or acquired new resistance mechanisms to drugs, commonly referred as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is alarming. The emergence and spread of AMR, which is mostly attributed to the use (often overuse and misuse) of antimicrobial substances such as antibiotics, is not a new phenomenon. In fact, AMR was discovered several decades ago. However, exponential increases in global antimicrobial use have led to a rise in the emergence and spread of AMR, which is nowadays considered as one of the top ten global public …

Hemp And Marijuana: The Necessity Of Lab Testing For Fair Prosecutions, Jessica Aycock Mar 2025

Hemp And Marijuana: The Necessity Of Lab Testing For Fair Prosecutions, Jessica Aycock

Pace Law Review

This Article examines the evidentiary and ethical challenges prosecutors nationwide face in distinguishing between hemp and marijuana under current federal and state laws. Following the legalization of hemp under the federal 2018 Farm Bill, the legal distinction between hemp and marijuana now hinges on the concentration of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This distinction requires quantitative lab testing to be established. Without quantitative lab testing, prosecutors cannot accurately determine THC levels, making it challenging, if not impossible, to meet the burden of proof required for marijuana possession convictions. This Article argues that the absence of testing raises evidentiary and ethical concerns that …

A Mistake For The Lake: Why Ohio Should Rethink Its Ban On Rights Of Nature For Lake Erie, Shelby Strohl

Cleveland State Law Review

“Throughout legal history, each successive extension of rights to some new entity has been, theretofore, a bit unthinkable.” - Professor Christopher Stone. The purpose of the rights of nature movement is to recognize that ecosystems and natural entities have the right to exist and thrive. Rights of nature give the natural entities legal protections against pollution and other harms. This Note recommends that the Ohio legislature reconsider its stance on prohibiting rights of nature under Ohio Revised Code Section 2305.011. This recommendation stems from the groundbreaking Lake Erie Bill of Rights, which granted rights of nature to Lake Erie in …

Pirfenidone Delivery By Blow-Molded Pcl Nanofiber Mat To Reduce Collagen Synthesis By Fibroblasts, Maximilian Zernic, Maryo Kohen, Faruk H. Orge, Amel Ahmed, Ozan Akkus

Faculty Scholarship

Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) during glaucoma is sometimes mitigated by insertion of glaucoma drainage devices (GDD). Excessive fibrosis around GDD plates may confine drainage and requiring revision surgeries in some patients. Pirfenidone (PFD) is an FDA approved drug to treat lung fibrosis, and it may be effective in limiting capsule formation around the GDD. To enable this, we aimed to develop a polymeric GDD encasement sheath that can sustainably release PFD to reduce fibrous capsule formation. The PFD-doped sheath was manufactured by blow molding of (poly)caprolactone (PCL). We investigated the effects of PCL concentration, spray distance, and molecular weight on …

Diabetes Behind Bars: Dissecting Diabetic Deliberate Indifference And Delivering Inmates A More Workable Standard Under The Fourth Amendment, Maggie J. Malloy

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note examines the inadequacies of the current Eighth Amendment framework in safeguarding the constitutional rights of diabetic inmates. It contends that the subjective element of the two-pronged Eighth Amendment claim—often used to assess deliberate indifference—leads to unfair and inconsistent outcomes. To address these shortcomings, this Note draws inspiration from the objective analysis employed in Fourth Amendment excessive force claims, specifically referencing the Supreme Court’s decision in Graham v. Connor. This new framework eliminates the subjective element, and instead replaces it with three objective factors courts should consider when evaluating Eighth Amendment violations related to diabetic medical care. Through …

Markers Of Growth And Nutrition In Children With Acquired Chylothorax Post Chd Surgery, Kevin N. Marzotto, Karin R. Videlefsky, Meghan P. Howell, Thomas R. Kimball, Frank A. Pigula, Kurt D. Piggott

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Acquired chylothorax is an established complication of CHD surgery, affecting 2-9% of patients. CHD places a child at risk for failure to thrive, with subsequent chylothorax imposing additional risk. Objective: We conducted a retrospective chart review to ascertain quantitative markers of nutrition and growth in children affected by chylothorax following CHD surgery between 2018 and 2022 compared to controls. Methods: We utilised electronic medical record system, EPIC, at Children's Hospital, New Orleans, targeting subjects < 18 years old who underwent CHD surgery between 2018 and 2022 and developed a subsequent chylothorax. Study subjects were identified using the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases codes (ICD-10 codes: J94.0, I89.8, and J90.0). Each chylothorax case (n = 20) was matched by procedure type and age to a control with no chylothorax (n = 20). Data were recorded in REDCap and analysed using SPSS. Results: After removal of outliers, we analysed 19 total matched pairs. There was no statistical difference in growth velocity (p = 0.12), weight change (operation to discharge) (p = 0.95), weight change (admission to discharge) (p = 0.35), Z-score change (operation to discharge) (p = 0.90), Z-score change (admission to discharge) (p = 0.21), serum protein (p = 0.88), or serum albumin (p = 0.82). Among cases, linear regression demonstrated no significant association between maximum chylous output and growth velocity (p = 0.91), weight change (operation to discharge) (p = 0.15), or weight change (admission to discharge) (p = 0.98). Conclusions: We did not observe statistically significant markers of growth or nutrition in children with chylothorax post-CHD surgery compared to those without chylothorax. Multisite data collection and analysis is required to better ascertain clinical impact and guide clinical practice.

Epigenetic Landscapes Of Aging In Breast Cancer Survivors: Unraveling The Impact Of Therapeutic Interventions-A Scoping Review, Nikita Nikita, Zhengyang Sun, Swapnil Sharma, Amy L Shaver, Victoria Seewaldt, Grace Lu-Yao

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Breast cancer therapies have dramatically improved survival rates, but their long-term effects, especially on aging survivors, need careful consideration. This review delves into how breast cancer treatments and aging intersect, focusing on the epigenetic changes triggered by chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal treatments, and targeted therapies. Treatments can speed up biological aging by altering DNA methylation, histone modifications, and chromatin remodeling, affecting gene expression without changing the DNA sequence itself. The review explains the double-edged sword effect of therapy-induced epigenetic modifications, which help fight cancer but also accelerate aging. Chemotherapy and targeted therapies, in particular, impact DNA methylation and histone modifications, promoting …
