Exploration Of Mystical Experiences And Relationship Changes: An Ayahuasca Study, Ginny Jo Reyes Jan 2025

Exploration Of Mystical Experiences And Relationship Changes: An Ayahuasca Study, Ginny Jo Reyes

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This mixed-methodology dissertation explores how participation in ayahuasca ceremonies at Rythmia Life Advancement Center (Costa Rica) influences relationship dynamics within couples. Looking at this in combination with self-reported mental health changes, the connection to mystical experiences are navigated. Statistical significance and narratives are explored; this study steps into the gap between ancient plant medicine traditions and the modern search for meaning, healing, and connection. Grounded in a social constructionist lens, the study combines pre- and post-surveys (CAGE-AID pre-only; MAT, KMS, RHS, PSS, GAD-7, PHQ-9; MEQ-30 post-only) with semistructured interviews. Quantitatively, participants showed significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression, with …

Caretaker Of Captors: The Experience Of Role Conflict Among State Correctional Officers, Camille M. Botticelli-Pohl Jan 2025

Caretaker Of Captors: The Experience Of Role Conflict Among State Correctional Officers, Camille M. Botticelli-Pohl

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

A variety of policies at the national level over the last 70 years have resulted in the mass incarceration of various marginalized populations, inclusive of individuals with mental health problems or severe mental illness. Although Constitutional mandates require that psychology staff be available at all state and federal facilities, these providers spend a fraction of the time with incarcerated people than correctional officers do. Correctional officers seem to play an important, if often overlooked, supporting role in the management of the day-to-day lives of people in custody, including elements of their mental health care. They are also, theoretically, tasked with …

Nature Interaction Assists With Coping And Resilience: An Interaction Pattern Approach With Adolescents With Histories Of Trauma In A Youth Group Home, Chrystal L. Dunker

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Adolescents with histories of trauma often experience disruptions to their emotional, social, and behavioral development. For those living in group home settings, supportive environments can play a key role in fostering healing and resilience. While nature interaction is increasingly recognized as a valuable way to support mental health and resilience, little research has explored its role in these settings. This study introduces an innovative methodology—the Interaction Pattern Approach (IPA)—to examine the role of nature interaction in coping and resilience for 12 adolescents with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) living in a youth group home. In this design, IPA integrates photovoice data …

What Do We Get Out Of Our Entertainment? Empirically Determining The Differences Between Narrative Engagement And Flow Using Video Games, Lars Wagener

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Immersion is an important aspect of entertainment media because it both drives the use of media and heightens one’s experience with that media (Nilsson et al., 2016). There are three core aspects of immersion. These aspects are (1) narrative engagement, (2) flow, and (3) enjoyment. This study set out to determine whether these aspects are statistically distinct from one another when observed in video games. The result indicated that these aspects were distinct from one another when examined through a structural equation model. This indicates that creating an overarching immersion variable that combines the different aspects of immersion may not …

Simulating Positive Ion Distribution In The Protodune Single Phase Detector, Vishnu Pfeiffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work covers the validation and implementation of a model to solve for argon ion (Ar+) distribution in the ProtoDUNE-SP liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). ProtoDUNE-SP undergoes a constant flux of cosmic ray muons due to surface operation. The performance of the ProtoDUNE-SP provided valuable insights into single-phase technology, membrane cryostat technology, and calibration of cryogenic instrumentation. Still, challenges in achieving precise measurements persist due to the space charge effect—the distortion of the electric field within the detector due to the accumulation of positive argon ions generated from constant cosmic muon flux. The overarching goal of this thesis is …

Name Your Price: How The Rise Of Tiktok Influencers Reveals Weaknesses In The Right Of Publicity’S Protection Of The Commercial Value Of Name And Identity, Melody Garzon Jan 2025

Name Your Price: How The Rise Of Tiktok Influencers Reveals Weaknesses In The Right Of Publicity’S Protection Of The Commercial Value Of Name And Identity, Melody Garzon

FIU Law Review

After TikTok's immediate success within the social media industry, many users have turned to their large followings on the app as a means of capitalizing on their own name, likeness, and identity. These influencers‚ now face various obstacles when attempting to assert their right of publicity. The right of publicity is entirely state-mandated, creating vast discrepancies in protection across state borders. More stringent regulations are needed regarding how one's right of publicity is legally protected against other TikTok users and third-party companies. TikTok's current Intellectual Property Policy does little to deter violations of a user's right of publicity; on the …

Is The Light Triad Really That Light?: The Light Triad's Role In Relationship Savior Complex, Skylar Robinson, Gary Lewandowski Jan 2025

Is The Light Triad Really That Light?: The Light Triad's Role In Relationship Savior Complex, Skylar Robinson, Gary Lewandowski

Modern Psychological Studies

Light triad traits, such as optimism, empathy, and compassion, are theorized to be three main components of a prosocial and compassionate orientation. However, in romantic relationships, those qualities may encourage a “savior complex” in which one partner attempts to help, fix, or change their partner’s less ideal components. To study this, 106 participants ranging in age from 18 to 24 years old were surveyed about their light triad traits, helping/savior complex behavior, confidence as a romantic partner (i.e., self-efficacy), closeness with their partner (i.e., inclusion of other in the self), and perceived responsiveness toward their partner. As hypothesized, those who …

Quackery Unmask’D: Defining Quackery In English And American Vernacular Medical Works, C. 1600-1800, Katherine Rose Horan Jan 2025

Quackery Unmask’D: Defining Quackery In English And American Vernacular Medical Works, C. 1600-1800, Katherine Rose Horan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis argues that, from 1600 to 1800, healers in both England and America conceptualized quackery through an evolving understanding of what made a medical practitioner “acceptable.” Through a close examination of vernacular medical print published in both England and America throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this thesis complicates earlier understandings of quackery as being disconnected from politics and social biases. Instead, medical authors used social position—specifically gender, race, and religion—and medical philosophy as ways to identify quacks. In England, the Royal College of Physicians used quackery to delegitimize their opponents, while critics of the College did the same. …

Impact Of Data Security Breach On Long-Term Firm Performance, Tim Brown Jan 2025

Impact Of Data Security Breach On Long-Term Firm Performance, Tim Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Data security breaches continue to be a primary concern for businesses. The possibility of losing sensitive customer data and how that might impact their firm is part of what keeps executives up at night. Past research has largely centered around how a data security breach might impact firm performance as measured by cumulative abnormal returns (CAR), or from an investor’s perspective. This research has produced inconsistent results, with some research efforts showing large negative impacts on market value while others show no impact at all. Through this research effort, I explore possible reasons for these inconsistent findings. Under Interpersonal Gossip …
