Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

The significance of social presence is pivotal for online students’ participation in online discussion boards. Yet, it remained ambiguous how students evolved their social presence in their network interaction development. This research delved into the extent to which social presence moderated trends over time in several facets of students' prominence within social learning analysis of online discussions. The social network analysis (SNA) employed revealed that students’ prominence, including betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, eigenvector centrality, and PageRank, showed no notable growth over the duration of a 7-week online course. Moreover, the consistent trend observed in betweenness, eigenvector, and PageRank, coupled with …

Transforming Tax Expenditures, Sloan G. Speck Jan 2025

Transforming Tax Expenditures, Sloan G. Speck

Publications

For decades, reformers have advocated the repeal of tax expenditures--disguised government spending through special preferences in the Internal Revenue Code. And yet, tax expenditures persist, impairing federal tax receipts by more than $1.8 trillion in 2024. This Article introduces a novel mechanism for tax expenditure reform. To the extent that direct statutory repeal proves impossible or impractical, lawmakers can achieve an equivalent result through a strategy of legislative anti-repeal. By radically expanding a tax expenditure's legal scope, then adjusting progressive income tax rates to account for revenue loss and distributional considerations, lawmakers can effectively eliminate tax expenditures from the tax …

Protect Transgender Kids: What Is “Protection” In Light Of Bans On Gender-Affirming Care?, Patricia B. Barnett Jan 2025

Protect Transgender Kids: What Is “Protection” In Light Of Bans On Gender-Affirming Care?, Patricia B. Barnett

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This Note examines the growing legal and constitutional conflict surrounding state laws that ban or restrict gender-affirming care for transgender minors. At the heart of the issue lies the clash between state authority and the constitutionally protected rights of parents under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Drawing on medical consensus that affirms the necessity and efficacy of gender-affirming care, the Note argues that these laws not only endanger the well-being of transgender youth but also infringe on parents' fundamental rights to direct their children’s medical treatment. The analysis highlights how some states mischaracterize gender-affirming care as a …

The study uses a novel approach into understanding how future risk posed by climate change could impact Lemur leaf frogs. By using field spatial data combined with physiological mechanistic modelling, the study is able to predict how Lemur leaf frogs body temperature and geographical …

Metabolic And Kinetic Impacts Of The Auxiliary Energy Source In Model Chemolithoheterotrophic Bacteria, Caleb Yarnley Jan 2025

Metabolic And Kinetic Impacts Of The Auxiliary Energy Source In Model Chemolithoheterotrophic Bacteria, Caleb Yarnley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Chemolithoheterotrophy describes a type of microbial metabolism by which organisms oxidise an inorganic electron donor to supplement the generation of an electrochemical gradient. This results in higher overall growth yields and maximum specific growth rates as the organism does not need to generate as many reducing equivalents to fuel the respiratory chain and can instead redirect that material into anabolic reactions to generate more biomass. Many aspects of this metabolism remain poorly understood due to the difficulty in observing genuine chemolithoheterotrophy, with significant increases in the maximum specific growth yield (YMAX) and maximum specific growth rate (µMAX) seen in continuous …

Competitive Populism, Madhav Khosla Jan 2025

Competitive Populism, Madhav Khosla

Faculty Scholarship

The preoccupation of comparative constitutional lawyers over the past decade or so has been the rise of authoritarian populism. This chapter focuses on one possible pathway that might follow our present political moment: competitive populism. This phase will involve a certain kind of institutional vacuum: the prior institutions, associated with liberal constitutional democracy, will not lend themselves to being rebooted. In reflecting on this possible future, this chapter explores the nature and form of deinstitutionalization that has occurred under authoritarian populism, and the elements that define the emerging constitutional framework. The implication here is that what will be crucial …

Synergistic Or Siloed? Communicative Practices In Dual-Earner Parents' Boundary Navigation And Implications For Gendered Work-Family Experiences, Jasmine Kelland, Laura Radcliffe, Grace Williams, Jo Gregory-Chialton

Plymouth Business School

It is well established that in contemporary Western society, work and family (WF) are often navigated by both members of a parenting couple. However, existing understandings regarding the communicative processes by which both parents navigate, and relationally co-construct WF boundaries together, remain somewhat of a theoretical blind spot. This study provides insights into the relational communicative practices that coupled, heterosexual parents engage in when navigating WF boundaries. Our couple-level data collected during the UK Covid-19 lockdown period, in which both parents simultaneously experienced boundary disruption, explore the communicative practices or ‘tactics’ engaged in to relationally navigate boundaries in this context. …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

Tryptophan (Trp)-based radiotracers have excellent potential for imaging many different types of brain pathology because of their involvement with both the serotonergic and kynurenine (KYN) pathways. However, radiotracers specific to the kynurenine metabolism pathway are limited. In addition, historically Trp-based radiopharmaceuticals were synthesized with the short-lived isotope carbon-11. A newer generation of Trp-based imaging agents using the longer half-lived and commercially available isotopes, such as fluorine-18 and iodine-124, are being developed. The newly developed amino acid-based tracers have been demonstrated to have favorable radiochemical and imaging characteristics in pre-clinical studies. However, many barriers still exist in the clinical translation of …
