The Impact Of A Creativity-Focused Course Design On The Development Of Pedagogical Creativity In Preservice Teachers, Joanna M. Weld
The Impact Of A Creativity-Focused Course Design On The Development Of Pedagogical Creativity In Preservice Teachers, Joanna M. Weld
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Current preservice teachers have been apprenticed within an educational system that favors standardization which has limited their experiences with creative teaching and learning. The field of teacher education is currently lacking in frameworks to support the creative development of preservice teachers. The aim of this practitioner research, multiple-case study was to examine the impact of a creativity-focused course design on the beliefs of preservice teachers enrolled in a Secondary English Methods course in regards to the nature of creativity, the role of creativity in teaching and learning, their personal creative strengths and weaknesses, and creativity in lesson planning. Data was …
Hippocampal Insulin Exists! In Vivo Sampling Methods, Basal Concentrations, Recurrent Hypoglycemia, And Behavioral Extracellular Insulin Responses, Starlette R. Douglass
Hippocampal Insulin Exists! In Vivo Sampling Methods, Basal Concentrations, Recurrent Hypoglycemia, And Behavioral Extracellular Insulin Responses, Starlette R. Douglass
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Insulin has widespread actions within the brain, including energy homeostasis, modulation of feeding, and as a key component of memory processes. Further, brain insulin dysfunction correlates with Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. To this point, measurement of hippocampal insulin has been limited. Determining in vivo hippocampal insulin levels both at a healthy baseline and after, e.g., induction of a disease state or in response to cognitive challenge, is essential to advance our understanding of both insulin's procognitive actions and to guide potential therapeutic interventions.
We first sought to establish a sampling technique for insulin within awake and moving rats …
Macroeconomics, State Action, Civic Trust, And Homicide: The Causes And Consequences Of Interpersonal Violence In Latin America, Guillermo Escano
Macroeconomics, State Action, Civic Trust, And Homicide: The Causes And Consequences Of Interpersonal Violence In Latin America, Guillermo Escano
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) represent 8 percent of the global population but about one-third of global homicides, yet interpersonal violence in the region receives limited attention in the English-language literature. This dissertation contains three distinct studies of the causes and consequences of crime and violence in LAC. The first study examines the predictive effects of inflation on robbery, burglary, and homicide rates in Argentina, which possesses one of the highest robbery rates worldwide and has endured high inflation – and, at times, hyperinflation – for years. I obtained annual crime data for 1973-2022 from the National Criminal Information …
The Theoretical And Practical Limits Of Kolmogorov-Zurbenko Periodograms With Dynamic Smoothing In The Spectral Analysis Of Time Series Data, Barry M. Loneck
The Theoretical And Practical Limits Of Kolmogorov-Zurbenko Periodograms With Dynamic Smoothing In The Spectral Analysis Of Time Series Data, Barry M. Loneck
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The purpose of this Dissertation was to establish the theoretical and practical limits of Kolmogorov-Zurbenko periodograms with dynamic smoothing in contrast to standard periodograms with static smoothing, along with a practical application of Kolmogorov-Zurbenko time series analysis methods. It was determined that Kolmogorov-Zurbenko periodograms with dynamic smoothing were superior to standard periodograms with static smoothing in estimating signal frequencies with respect to sensitivity, accuracy, and resolution, and that they are robust in the face of missing data. However, their precision in estimating signal strength exceeds that of standard periodograms with static smoothing in only the most extreme circumstances and, thus, …

Calibration Of A Low-Cost Air Quality Sensor Package Integrated Into The New York State Mesonet, Ellie Hojeily
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The University at Albany designed and manufactured 59 low-cost air quality sensor packages to continuously measure PM₂.₅, CO, O₃, NO₂, and NO at 38 New York State Mesonet (NYSM) sites located in the New York City Metropolitan Area. Prior to use for monitoring, low-cost sensors require calibration to correct for environmental sensitivities. Calibration models can be developed using data collected from co-location periods in which low-cost sensors are installed at sites with Federal Reference Methods and/or Federal Equivalent Methods instruments. In this study, packages were periodically co-located (calibrated) for 18 to 162 days at the New York State Department of …
Investigation Of The Binding Mechanism Between The Supplemental And Tail Regions Of Mirna And Mrna Within Argonaute 2, Christina Ms Karadiakos
Investigation Of The Binding Mechanism Between The Supplemental And Tail Regions Of Mirna And Mrna Within Argonaute 2, Christina Ms Karadiakos
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that play a key role in gene silencing. miRNAs form an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) with the argonaute 2 (AGO2) protein in order to control gene expression through silencing messenger RNAs (mRNA). The ability for a miRNA-mRNA complex to fit into AGO2 and form the RISC is based on the location and characteristics of a central bulge, but the mechanism and interactions that lead to a functional RISC remain unknown. Using available experimental data, we modeled the miR-34 and NOTCH1 duplex inside of AGO2 with only the seed region base paired. …
Challenges In Financial Prosperity: Cutback Management And Bounded Rationality In New York State School Districts, Moontae Hwang
Challenges In Financial Prosperity: Cutback Management And Bounded Rationality In New York State School Districts, Moontae Hwang
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The Great Recession posed unexpected fiscal challenges for public sector entities, particularly small and mid-sized organizations such as school districts, which operate with limited revenue flexibility and constrained managerial capacity. While the recession was a macroeconomic event, which could be an exogenous shock to state and local governments beyond their control, state and local policy responses played a critical role in shaping its long-term effects on local public services. Scholars have emphasized the importance of long-term perspectives among policymakers and public managers to sustain the quality of public services during crises. However, the heightened uncertainty of the recession also constrained …
Limitations Of The High-Resolution Rapid Refresh Gust Algorithm, Alex M. Glasser
Limitations Of The High-Resolution Rapid Refresh Gust Algorithm, Alex M. Glasser
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
ABSTRACT:
Accurate wind and gust forecasts are crucial in operational meteorology, yet there is a distinct gap in the literature regarding the verification of operational gust forecasts. In the present work, we assess the performance of the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh's (HRRR) gust potential, verifying it against the Automated Surface Observing System's (ASOS) observed gusts across the Continental United States (CONUS). The HRRR gust's diurnal cycle reveals a significant underprediction of the gust during daylight hours and a slight overprediction of the gust during hours of darkness. The daytime underprediction undermines the assumption that forecasts represent a potential that tends to …

Elucidating The Effects Of Environmental And Physiological Conditions On Stem Cell Regulation In Vivo, Nimmy John
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The Notch signaling pathway is a highly conserved intercellular signaling pathway that any dysregulation can lead to a variety of human diseases. These diseases are further exacerbated by various environmental, pathological and genetic conditions. Previous studies have shown that these conditions have been known to affect the Notch transcriptional response. However, the molecular mechanisms by which such conditions influence Notch signaling remained largely unknown. Moreover, most Notch studies have relied on in vitro systems and indirect reporters, which can miss the dynamic and contextual nature of Notch signaling. Here, we systematically analyzed the effects of these conditions with single molecule …
The Benefit Of New Perspective: An Analysis Of Postcolonial Adaptation, Sara L. Tilbe
The Benefit Of New Perspective: An Analysis Of Postcolonial Adaptation, Sara L. Tilbe
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
In our modern world, the concept of literary adaptation is not unheard of. Each release of a new, popular text comes with an underlying chance that it will likely be snatched up by Hollywood executives to be told through a cinematic setting. However, there is less fanfare when it comes to the topic of literary adaptation, particularly of famous texts that are deemed “classic” of the literary canon. Usually, any news of a literary adaptation of a classic book is meant with polarizing views from the general public. Some welcome the change, excited for what a new author can bring …

Many United States students, and ,specifically, New York State students, do not have access to CTE coursework. New York has seven CTE content areas: agriculture, business and marketing, computer science, family and consumer science, health sciences, technology, and trade/technical education.
One barrier to accessing this coursework is the availability of teaching staff. According to data collected by the New York State Education Department …
Large Scale Machine Learning Over Knowledge Graphs, Bedirhan Gergin
Large Scale Machine Learning Over Knowledge Graphs, Bedirhan Gergin
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Knowledge graphs (KGs) have become popular across various fields, providing convenient access to web-based knowledge while storing and formalizing domain-specific information. By analyzing KGs, patterns, connections, and dependencies can be identified across different data sources, enabling the inference of new knowledge from given facts. As the use of KGs expands, the size of modern KGs has grown significantly, making them impossible to process within the main memory of a single computer. Distributed computing offers a viable solution to this challenge by leveraging the combined capabilities of multiple servers within a cluster. This thesis explores how distributed computing can be effectively …
Demonstration And Assessment Of Dark Field And Phase X-Ray Computed Tomography, Wadiah Hamed Allahyani
Demonstration And Assessment Of Dark Field And Phase X-Ray Computed Tomography, Wadiah Hamed Allahyani
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Conventional computed tomography produces a 2D slice or 3D image from multiple conventional images to avoid overlapping structures and increase visualization of the internal features of the object. A set up, macro controls and processing for computed tomography was created for the Center for X-ray Optics for the first time, and demonstrated in this work. Adding differential phase contrast to conventional x-ray images highlights edges. Two more channels of information, dark field and integrated phase, improve the contrast and increase the signal-to-noise ratios of the image. Combining these channels with computed tomography is an important development. This work is the …
Investigation Of Electromigration Stresses Of Advanced Node Conductors Through Pulsed Power Behavior, Mohd Mueen Ul Islam Mattoo
Investigation Of Electromigration Stresses Of Advanced Node Conductors Through Pulsed Power Behavior, Mohd Mueen Ul Islam Mattoo
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The microelectronics industry continues to put a heavy focus on preventing electromigration (EM) failures at advanced node conductors. The continuous scaling coupled with higher operating current densities further accentuate the problem. Most of the electromigration testing in the industry is performed with DC currents to evaluate the electromigration reliability of metal interconnects. However, most of the real-world applications operate using a pulsed current rather than a constant direct current. EM testing with pulsed direct current (PDC) show interesting results with how the current induced stress gradient evolves in absence of the electromigration driving force. It is generally assumed that the …
Tapping A Hidden Resource In Classrooms: Peer Interactions And Their Role In Language, Literacy, And Disciplinary Literacy Practices Among Adolescent English And Non-English Learners, Jina Byeon

Stratospheric Variability And Its Relationship To Cold Air Outbreaks In The United States, Paul T. Panhans
Stratospheric Variability And Its Relationship To Cold Air Outbreaks In The United States, Paul T. Panhans
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Only since the early 2000s, has there been a growing body of work linking extreme winter temperature anomalies to the variability of the Northern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex (SPV). However, the understanding behind stratosphere-troposphere coupling and cold air outbreaks (CAOs) remain occasionally contradictory in the literature, making it difficult to properly articulate societal risks. Studies often focused on broad stratospheric influences, but this research directly compared stratospheric variability according to their respective tropospheric impacts. This dissertation filled a knowledge gap, as there has yet to be a comprehensive analysis to quantify the differences in stratospheric variability with and without CAOs …
A Dynamically Adapting Forecast Cone Based On Ensemble Spread, Michael N. Barletta
A Dynamically Adapting Forecast Cone Based On Ensemble Spread, Michael N. Barletta
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Dynamically based ensemble prediction systems have gained considerable attention because they can provide a greater range of possible forecast outcomes and quantify the uncertainty in forecasts. In turn, forecasters can convey clearer messages to the public on the range of forecast scenarios and display inherent uncertainty in weather forecasts, which can be difficult to do with deterministic forecasts. Although global ensemble prediction systems have demonstrated skill in their probabilistic track predictions, the information contained within them is not always fully utilized beyond the mean forecast and standard deviation (i.e., spread). One way that these ensembles could be better employed is …
Further Results On Learning Quantum Measurement Classes: Quantum Pac Model For Povm Hypothesis Classes, Arka Prabha Das
Further Results On Learning Quantum Measurement Classes: Quantum Pac Model For Povm Hypothesis Classes, Arka Prabha Das
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
This thesis investigates the problem of learning from quantum systems, where each example consists of a quantum state paired with a classical outcome. The task centers on choosing an effective measurement rule from a fixed set to enable accurate prediction of the classical outcome from the quantum state. A central focus lies in understanding whether joint measurement strategies that cannot be separated into local operations offer a real benefit in terms of the number of examples needed for successful learning. We examine conditions under which a non-separable measurement within a given hypothesis class achieves strictly better sample complexity bounds compared …

Enhancing Crispr-Cas12a Activity Through Guide Rna Methylation, Hilal Dagci
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
CRISPR-Cas12a is a rapidly evolving technology for improved gene editing in cells, as well as in vivo. The system, consisting of Cas12a nuclease and approximately 40-nt long guide RNA (gRNA), can efficiently recognize and cut genomic double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). Chemical modifications to the gRNA can potentially improve its dsDNA binding and enhance Cas12a-mediated nuclease activity. In this work, 5-methyl cytidine (m5C) and N6-methyl adenosine (m6A) were explored to improve the binding between gRNA and target DNA. Phosphoramidites of m5C and m6A were used to construct a library of gRNAs using solid phase RNA synthesis. Tm studies were carried out …

The Great Scrape: The Clash Between Scraping And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove, Woodrow Hartzog
The Great Scrape: The Clash Between Scraping And Privacy, Daniel J. Solove, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Artificial intelligence (AI) systems depend on massive quantities of data, often gathered by “scraping”—the automated extraction of large amounts of data from the internet. A great deal of scraped data contains people’s personal information. This personal data provides the grist for AI tools such as facial recognition, deep fakes, and generative AI. Although scraping enables web searching, archiving of records, and meaningful scientific research, scraping for AI can also be objectionable and even harmful to individuals and society.
Organizations are scraping at an escalating pace and scale, even though many privacy laws are seemingly incongruous with the practice. In this …
A Proposed Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé Game Model For Natural Language Processing Generative Adversarial Networks, Don Li
Anthós
Large Language Models (LLM’s) (e.g., ChatGPT) constitute both a significant research area and commercial application of AI. Current major LLM’s are built on Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) neural network architecture to perform natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is another popular neural network architecture, which leverages a zero-sum game between constituent neural networks within the architecture to train the GAN, and is widely used for visual data applications. This article proposes a new GAN architecture for NLP: an EF-GAN whose underlying algorithm uses Ehrenfeucht–Fraïssé (EF) games, a game-theoretic approach from model theory to determine elementary equivalence of …

For the past century, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed the importance of parents’ rights to direct their children’s upbringing and education. Yet suddenly the rhetoric of parental rights is being used to ground a broad range of claims on issues such as what can be taught in public schools, when minors can access gender-affirming care, or who will be punished for helping minors travel for abortion care. Why have parental-rights claims surged so visibly in contemporary law and politics? And are all the new arguments made under the banner of parental rights equally rooted in constitutional precedent?

A Patent System For Temple Grandin, Andrew Chin
A Patent System For Temple Grandin, Andrew Chin
Faculty Publications
This article explores the intersection of neurodiversity and innovation through the lens of Temple Grandin’s contributions to livestock handling systems and her philosophical alignment with the U.S. patent system. Drawing on cognitive research by Simon Baron-Cohen, archaeological insights from Penny Spikins, and personal reflections, I argue that autistic cognitive styles—characterized by heightened “folk physics” aptitudes and visual thinking—have historically driven technological progress. Grandin’s patented inventions, motivated by sensory-based empathy for animals, exemplify how neurodivergent inventors seek to embed their conceptions of ethical utility into the nation’s technological infrastructure. The article critiques modern patent litigation trends, advocating instead for a system …
