Reexamining The Relationship Of Georgia’S Rural World Language Teachers’ Efficacy To Teacher Attrition, Shannon Borum, Peter B. Swanson
Reexamining The Relationship Of Georgia’S Rural World Language Teachers’ Efficacy To Teacher Attrition, Shannon Borum, Peter B. Swanson
The Rural Educator
U.S. schools, including those in rural America, have struggled with a shortage of world language teachers for decades. Using Bandura’s framework of self-efficacy teaching languages, the researchers conducted a study using the same methods as an earlier study of rural world language teacher attrition in Georgia. Contrary to those findings, results in the present study indicate that teacher efficacy is not a factor in one’s decision to remain in or leave the teaching profession in Georgia; environmental factors appear to be a stronger indicator of rural world language teacher attrition. The study also has implications for teacher and administrator preparation …

Rooted Writing: The Role Of Place In Rural Writing Identities, Layne Elise Ilderton
The Rural Educator
This article investigates the intricate dynamics of writing relationships among rural students, highlighting the profound impact of place and identity on their writing experiences. Using a mixed methods approach, the study explores how rural settings influence students’ self-perceptions, apprehensions, and preferences in writing, as observed through a survey administered in three rural high schools. Central to the findings is the observation that students demonstrate a notable decrease in writing apprehension when engaging with topics rooted in their personal and rural experiences. They also have auditory and social preferences for writing environment and feel restricted with stringent grammar requirements in writing. …

Aimr-Brainstorm: Ai-Enhanced Interactive Mixed Reality For Collaborative Ideation, Yuchuan Ma
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This study investigates the potential of an AI-enhanced Mixed Reality (MR) brainstorming system, named AIMR-Brainstorm, in comparison to traditional sticky notes for creative ideation. By integrating real-time idea extraction through ChatGPT with immersive, physics-based visualizations, the system aims to transform analog brainstorming workflows into dynamic, interactive digital experiences. Using a within-subject experimental design, 30 participants engaged in paired brainstorming sessions with both AIMR and sticky notes. Quantitative measures of efficiency, engagement, creativity, and user satisfaction were collected through between-session and post-study surveys, while qualitative feedback provided additional insights into user experiences. Conclusively, while traditional sticky notes were generally preferred for …
Protecting The Freedom Of Movement For All: A Proposal For Complete Street Policies That Prioritize The Needs Of Travelers With Idds And Autism In The Wake Of N.J. Bill S147, Olivia Handelman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the groundbreaking implications of New Jersey Bill S147, which mandates the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to develop complete street designs specifically addressing the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism). This legislation represents a significant shift in complete streets policies, which traditionally focus on physical accessibility but rarely prioritize non-physical disabilities. The note argues that NJDOT’s implementation of these designs must include tailored strategies, such as mobility education, staff training, and improved signage, to ensure independent and safe travel for this population. By addressing these needs, New Jersey …

Harnessing Knowledge And Data For Clinical Information Extraction In The Era Of Large Language Models, Yan Hu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The rapid digitization of healthcare records has led to the widespread adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), which contain rich, unstructured clinical notes. These notes hold valuable information for patient care and clinical research, but their complexity and unstructured nature pose significant challenges for effective utilization. Clinical Information Extraction (IE) aims to bridge this gap by transforming unstructured text into structured data, enabling automated analysis. Traditional Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, such as Named Entity Recognition (NER), have been widely used for clinical IE, but recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and LLaMA have opened new …
Leveraging And Advancing The Foundation Models For Clinical Trajectory Analysis Based On Electronic Health Record Data, Jianping He
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Enhancements in foundation models have provided significant potentials for clinical applications. This dissertation leverages and advances foundation models for a range of clinical tasks using electronic health record (EHR) data, demonstrating their applicability in Clinical Temporal Relation Extraction (CTRE), disease prediction, and patients trajectory analysis.
Aim 1 is to efficiently adapt large language models (LLMs) for CTRE in both full data and few-shot settings. This study leveraged four LLMs: GatorTron-Base, GatorTron-Large, LLaMA3.1, and MeLLaMA. The proposed fine-tuning strategies include: (a) standard fine-tuning; (b) hard-prompting; (c) soft-prompting; (d) Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). We found that nearly all proposed fine-tuning strategies outperformed existing …

This thesis examines how modern traceability technologies can help combat forced labor in global supply chains, focusing on the case of Uyghur workers in Xinjiang, China. The research addresses the pressing challenge of verifying ethical labor practices in complex, multi-tiered supply networks, using the case study alongside an extensive literature review. It evaluates advanced technological solutions, including blockchain ledgers, isotope analysis, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tagging, and microbiome tracing as tools to improve supply chain transparency. Through qualitative case analysis and analysis of current research, the thesis assesses each technology’s capability to trace product origins and authenticate labor conditions. The findings …
Unto The (Data) Breach, Charlotte A. Tschider
Unto The (Data) Breach, Charlotte A. Tschider
University of Richmond Law Review
Since the early 2000s, U.S. courts have begun hearing “data breach” liability cases, the inevitable result of a growing internet- connected technology infrastructure. The relatively recent develop- ment of case law signals a body of law in development, stunted by significant limiting factors that prevent the coalescence of legal principles. To date, no holistic empirical exploration of data breach cases has offered sufficient detail to explore these factors. This descriptive empirical study analyzes, in detail, 225 data breach cases from 2005–2022, reviewing these cases over an extended period to descriptively identify key trends and changes within a bona fide data …
Congressional Outsiders And Textualist Non Sequitur, Chun Hin Jeffrey Tsoi
Congressional Outsiders And Textualist Non Sequitur, Chun Hin Jeffrey Tsoi
University of Richmond Law Review
In Congressional Insiders and Outsiders, Amy Coney Barrett distinguished between “congressional insider” approaches like process-based theories (i.e., drawing interpretive resources from Congress’s procedures and practices) and “congressional outsider” approaches like textualism (i.e., drawing interpretive resources exclusively from ordinary meaning of the statutory text). According to Barrett, textualists would find an “outsider” approach normatively superior because courts should be faithful agents of the people, who do not usually have inside knowledge of Congress. This embodies a distinctive type of defense for textualism, which I call “outsider textualism,” based not on statutory text as the compromise drawn in Congress, but instead on …

“Do I Stand On My Own” Or “Are We All In This Together”? The Effect Of Collectivist Marketing Messages During Challenging Times Like Pandemic, Milad Hour, Golshad Parsimoghadam
AMTP Proceedings 2025
During the pandemic, as people dealt with fatalities, lockdowns, and the psychological impact of reduced social interactions, some marketing messages still captured significant public attention. What was the key element contributing to the success of these communications during such challenging times? This study focuses on the role of collectivism as a stress-coping mechanism included within marketing communications. Analyzing approximately 56,000 brand-generated posts on Platform X, the research examines how the use of collectivist language (e.g., we, us, etc.) relates to message likability, particularly as the pandemic nears its peak. The findings reveal that collectivist terms are positively associated with the …

As an integral part of qualitative research inquiry, field notes provide important data from researchers embedded in research sites. However, field notes can vary significantly, influenced by the researchers' immersion in the field, prior knowledge, beliefs, interests, and perspectives. As consequence, their interpretation presents significant challenges. This study offers a preliminary investigation into the potential of using large language models to assist researchers with the analysis and interpretation of field notes data. Our methodology consisted of two phases. First, a researcher deductively coded field notes of six classroom implementations of a novel elementary-level mathematics curriculum. In the second phase, we …

To improve the provision of psychotherapy, many countries have now established clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of specific disorders and mental health concerns. These guidelines have typically been based on evidence from meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials with minimal consideration of findings from qualitative research designs. This said, there has been growing interest in incorporating qualitative research in guideline development processes from both stakeholders and guideline development bodies. In this international collaboration, 19 qualitative psychotherapy researchers from 10 countries articulated the benefits of including qualitative findings within the guideline development process and generated recommendations for guideline developers. The underlying …

"When The Bills Keep On Coming:" The Experiences Of Seafood Processors During The Covid-19 Pandemic
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Essential workers were at increased risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, including seafood processors who are often rendered invisible within the public sphere. To examine the health and safety concerns of seafood processors, many who are low income or im/migrant workers on H-2B visas, our team conducted qualitative research with 44 participants. We found that in addition to high occupational health hazards that existed before the pandemic, COVID-19 increased workers' financial risks, which put them in more dangerous health and safety positions, since they needed to work through physical and mental health illness. These financial risks can be seen through the …

Empowering Educators: Culturally Responsive Teaching And Teacher Self-Efficacy For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Margaret Capriola
Theses & Dissertations
The evolving education landscape calls for teachers to adapt their instruction to reflect students’ backgrounds and cultures. educators are expected to foster inclusive learning environments while equipping students with the critical thinking skills necessary to challenge social injustices – a practice known as culturally responsive teaching (CRT). While scholars have explored teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing CRT, limited research exists on how special education teachers, particularly those working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), perceive their CRT self-efficacy (CRTSE) and professional preparation. This sequential mixed methods study examined the CRTSE levels of special education teachers working with students with autism. …
