Self-Directed Behavior Reflects Social Stress In Captive Asian Elephants, Sofia Vilela, Peini Chen, So Murakami, Yusuke Tanabe, Shinya Yamamoto

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Self-directed behaviors (SDBs), such as scratching, self-grooming, and body shaking, have been widely used as indicators of anxiety and social stress in non-human primates. However, research focused on SDB outside the primate range is still in infancy. Expanding this topic to other species can support animal welfare assessments and enhance comparative social studies. This study investigates whether SDB levels can reflect the social stress experienced in Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). Using all-occurrences and focal sampling on four captive individuals, we compared post-conflict SDB levels in victims to their baseline levels. Furthermore, changes in group composition during the study …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objectives: Age-related cataracts and macular pucker are increasingly common. Standard treatment combines phacoemulsification, IOL implantation and small gauge vitrectomy. Recent advancements and acceptance of femtosecond laser (FSL) assistance in cataract surgery have improved precision and outcomes. However, evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of FSL-assisted phacovitrectomy, particularly in Oriental patient populations with distinct anatomical and genetic characteristics, remain limited. This study aims to address this critical gap by comparing the safety and post-operative outcomes of 23- or 25-gauge phacovitrectomy for stage 3 macular pucker and medium density cataract with versus without FSL-assistance (FSLA), in an Oriental patient cohort.

Methods: Patients …

Background: Renal impairment significantly affects morbidity and mortality rates of cirrhosis patients. Studies on glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) estimation did not include cirrhosis patients. These equations are erroneous and unreliable in cirrhosis due to sarcopenia. Further, the accuracy of eGFR equations varies across different ethnic groups. Measurement of GFR by iohexol clearance is a gold standard method of accurate determination of GFR. There is scarce data on iohexol GFR in cirrhosis and none in Indian population.

Methodology: This was prospective observational study. Consecutive adult patients with cirrhosis with stable renal function for prior 1 month were included. Iohexol weight-based dosage …

Introduction: While a limited number of disease-modifying treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been approved in the United States, there is caution in adopting these treatments in clinical use. The electronic Person-Specific Outcome Measure (ePSOM) tool was recently developed to establish whether, besides modifying underlying AD pathology, new treatments exerted sufficient beneficial effects in areas that matter the most to an individual.

Methods: We conducted a study to understand how findings from the ePSOM UK study applied in the United States. The ePSOM US survey (May 2023 to January 2024) collected primarily free-text responses in personally defined brain health priorities, …

A Transferable Approach For Quantifying Benthic Fish Sizes And Densities In Annotated Underwater Images, Peter C. Esselman, Shadi Moradi, Joseph K. Geisz, Christopher Roussi

Michigan Tech Publications

Benthic fishes are a common target of scientific monitoring but are difficult to quantify because of their close association to bottom habitats that are hard to access. Advances in image-acquisition technologies, machine vision and deep learning have made capturing and quantifying fishes with cameras increasingly feasible. We present a method and open-source software called ‘FishScale’ to estimate benthic fish lengths, numeric abundance and biomass density in underwater environments assessed with down-looking monocular images. ‘FishScale’ estimates fish abundances and size frequencies from near-nadir monocular images where fish have already been semantically segmented. The software accounts for lens distortion, underwater magnification effects …

In this study, IM7/Cycom 5320-1 unidirectional prepreg has been utilized to manufacture 16-layer laminated composites: a symmetric cross-ply ([0°/90°]4s) and a quasi-isotropic ([45°/90°/−45°/0°]2s) configuration. Microwave and autoclave curing processes have been employed to manufacture the laminated composites. The manufactured composite cure was assessed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The quality and porosity of the microwave-cured parts were juxtaposed to those of autoclave-cured parts through optical microscopy and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning. Mechanical characterization of the microwave-cured panels was conducted using uniaxial tensile and flexural tests, with results juxtaposed to autoclave-cured samples. Experimental characterization revealed that the microwave-cured parts exhibited nearly …

Physics-Constrained Generative Artificial Intelligence For Rapid Takeoff Trajectory Design, Samuel Sisk, Xiaosong Du

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The urban air mobility (UAM) industry is rapidly growing to alleviate regional transportation congestion. Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft plays a critical role in this growth due to their efficiency and reduced operating cost. However, excessive energy demands by the takeoff phase impact the practicality of the aircraft. Conventional multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) identifies a minimum energy trajectory but can be computationally intensive due to iteratively evaluating high-fidelity simulation models. In addition, complex constraints in practical MDAO pose crucial challenges to the already demanding process. Surrogate models enable efficient design optimization, but complex constraints could prohibit surrogate-based …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of grain size, irradiation temperature, and dose on the evolution of irradiation-induced defects in austenitic 304L stainless steel (SS) was systematically investigated. Coarse-grained (CG), ultrafine-grained (UFG), and nanocrystalline (NC) specimens were exposed to irradiation doses up to 10 displacements per atom (dpa) at room temperature (RT), 300°C, and 500°C. Dislocation loop size and density were quantitatively analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and results showed that the dislocation loop size remained comparable across different grain sizes. However, loop density was strongly dependent on the grain size. The CG specimens exhibited the highest loop density due to a limited fraction …

Few-Shot Learning-Enhanced Tiered Path Planning For Mars Rover Navigation, Ziyi Wang, Di Yu, Mina Khalilzadeh Fathi, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Path planning for Mars rovers presents significant challenges due to the diverse terrain, ranging from easily navigable areas to hazardous zones. Traditional methods typically classify terrain simply as passable or impassable, failing to account for the nuances of more moderately challenging areas. In this paper, we introduce a tiered terrain-aware path planning strategy, employing few-shot learning to classify and segment Martian terrain into levels of difficulty. The few-shot learning model, trained on Earth, is sent to the rover, enabling real-time processing of images from satellites or helicopters. The flexibility of few-shot learning, which requires minimal data and training time, enables …

Background

Prehospital identification of large‐vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke facilitates the development of a regional triage protocol that could lead to an improvement in intrahospital and interhospital workflows. This requires stroke education of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to improve stroke recognition, severity assessment, and prenotification. However, the current state of EMS personnel's knowledge of LVO stroke, their training for stroke severity assessment, and their preferences for educational methods are unknown. We conducted a nationwide EMS survey across the United States to glean insights that can inform and customize future EMS educational efforts.

School of Medicine Publications

Limbic predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) is highly prevalent in late life and a common co-pathology with Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic change (ADNC). LATE-NC is a slowly progressive, amnestic clinical syndrome. Alternatively, when present with ADNC, LATE-NC is associated with a more rapid course. With the emergence of anti-amyloid therapeutics, discrimination of LATE-NC from ADNC is critical and will lead to greater clinical recognition of amnestic patients without ADNC. Furthermore, co-pathology with LATE-NC may influence outcomes of these therapeutics. Thus there is a need to identify patients during life with likely LATE-NC. We propose criteria for clinical diagnosis of …

BACKGROUND: The antigen Na-GST-1, expressed by the hookworm Necator americanus, plays crucial biochemical roles in parasite survival. This study explores the development of mRNA vaccine candidates based on Na-GST-1, building on the success of recombinant Na-GST-1 (rNa-GST-1) protein, currently assessed as a subunit vaccine candidate, which has shown promise in preclinical and clinical studies.

METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: By leveraging the flexible design of RNA vaccines and protein intracellular trafficking signal sequences, we developed three variants of Na-GST-1 as native (cytosolic), secretory, and plasma membrane-anchored (PM) antigens. After one immunization in mice, mRNA vaccines induced an earlier onset of antigen-specific antibodies compared to …

Aging, a universal and inevitable process, is characterized by a progressive accumulation of physiological alterations and functional decline over time, leading to increased vulnerability to diseases and ultimately mortality as age advances. Lifestyle factors, notably physical activity (PA) and exercise, significantly modulate aging phenotypes. Physical activity and exercise can prevent or ameliorate lifestyle-related diseases, extend health span, enhance physical function, and reduce the burden of non-communicable chronic diseases including cardiometabolic disease, cancer, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, and chronic respiratory diseases as well as premature mortality. Physical activity influences the cellular and molecular drivers of biological aging, slowing aging rates-a foundational …

The Ethics Of Military Influence On Politics, Brenner M. Fissell

Faculty Publications

Military rule is common across the world, but this form of government is incompatible with the rule of law for various reasons. To prevent this, Western democracies such as the United States impose a strong norm of civilian supremacy over military officials. The most important role of this norm of “civilian control” in America today is to police the interventions of senior military officers’ influence in politics. While the standard position is that the military should be “apolitical,” this limitation does little work in helping senior officers understand permissible conduct, as nearly every issue confronting them will implicate matters of …

Empirical Study Of Far-Field Radio Frequency Wireless Power Transfer Testbed For Underground Mines Based On 1.8 Ghz, Anabi Hilary Kelechi, Samuel Frimpong

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel 1.8 GHz far-field wireless power transfer (WPT) testbed was designed to achieve long-distance energy harvesting in underground mine (UM). Prior experimental studies confirm that underground mines experience 50 dB radio frequency (RF) signal attenuation compared to a typical wireless environment. Due to this severe signal attenuation, the currently proposed radio frequency energy harvesting (RF-EH) testbed cannot be deployed in underground mines. In this study, we proposed, designed and performed an empirical study with a military-grade class A radio frequency wireless power transfer (RF-WPT) testbed. The various digital modulation schemes experimented with included: BPSK, DBPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, Pi4DQPSK, 8PSK, …

Despite ongoing efforts to enhance coal rib stability, the underground coal mining sector continues to face incidents of rib failure, leading to injuries and fatalities. The development and validation of effective rib support systems are crucial for mitigating these risks. Unfortunately, a standardized design methodology that accommodates the diverse geological conditions of U.S. coal mines is missing. Current practices are often based on trial-and-error or outdated methods, yielding unreliable outcomes. This research aims to fill this gap by creating a comprehensive methodology for designing rib support systems suitable for U.S. underground mines. It encompasses in situ pull-out tests of coal …

Introduction: Lung transplantation has seen strides in survival over the past few decades, though long-term survival remains poor. Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) is a leading cause of graft failure and mortality beyond the first year. Anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) is commonly used for treating refractory CLAD, though its efficacy remains uncertain.

Methods: This retrospective study evaluated the impact of ATG on lung function decline and mortality among lung transplant recipients diagnosed with CLAD, defined as a persistent >20% decline in forced expiratory volume (FEV1) from baseline. Patients treated with ATG were compared to those who did not receive ATG, using …

Exercise-induced complete right bundle branch block (CRBBB) remains a rare finding during a treadmill test. Both exercise-induced CRBBB and left anterior fascicular block (LAFB) have been associated with coronary artery disease, more specifically with stenosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Left septal fascicular block (LSFB) has been associated with acute and chronic coronary syndromes. We describe a patient case with severe left main coronary artery disease. In an exercise test, a rare combination of these three ventricular conduction disorders developed. In a second exercise test after coronary bypass surgery, LAFB and typical CRBBB developed without LSFB.

The baroreflex system is involved in modulating several physiological functions of the cardiovascular system and can modulate cardiac output, blood pressure, and cardiac electrophysiology directly and indirectly. In addition, it is involved in regulating neurohormonal pathways involved in the cardiovascular function, such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and vasopressin release. Baroreflex dysfunction is characterized by sympathetic overactivation and parasympathetic withdrawal and is associated with several cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, heart failure, and coronary artery disease. Targeting the baroreflex system via invasive (eg, baroreflex activation therapy and endovascular baroreceptor amplification) and noninvasive approaches (eg, slow breathing exercises and exercise training) has …

We have previously shown that mice with a loss of C-type lectin-like type II (CLEC2), which have lymphatic dysfunction due to the role of CLEC2 in platelets for maintaining separation between the venous and lymphatic system, develop lung tertiary lymphoid organ (TLO) formation and lung injury that resembles an emphysema phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We now sought to investigate whether and how TLOs in these mice may play a pathogenic role in lung injury that is relevant to human disease. We found that inhibiting TLO formation using an anti-CD20 antibody in CLEC2-deficient mice partially blocked the development …

We introduce the Stigma-to-Structure Advocacy Framework, a novel, evidence-based model designed to transform narcolepsy advocacy by systematically bridging patient narratives with structural change. Narcolepsy remains a profoundly underdiagnosed and misunderstood neurological disorder, with persistent diagnostic delays and pervasive cultural stigma undermining patient well-being and access to care. Despite recent progress in awareness and support, advocacy efforts remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated with health policy, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This perspective advances a strategic evolution of narcolepsy advocacy through the Stigma-to-Structure Advocacy Framework, which is anchored in three pillars: narrative-driven awareness, clinical system integration, and policy activation. Drawing on …
