OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of price transparency and prosocial messaging on price-protected consumers’ health care choices as a potential cost-saving strategy to manage rising US health care expenditures.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. Participants were recruited to complete a basic questionnaire via Amazon’s Mechanical Turk program. Participants’ selections were subsequently collected and analyzed.
METHODS: Participants (N = 567) selected a sleep study provider from 5 options, with manipulations including financial responsibility, provision of price information, and a prosocial message encouraging high-value options.
RESULTS: Price transparency increased the selection of lower-cost options among participants who were solely responsible for paying for …
Psychological Reactance Theory And Tax Evasion Intentions, Diana Falsetta, Brian C. Spilker
Psychological Reactance Theory And Tax Evasion Intentions, Diana Falsetta, Brian C. Spilker
Faculty Publications
This study experimentally examines how tax administration service inefficiencies in the form of tax return processing delays from paper-filed tax returns indirectly affect taxpayer tax evasion intentions through taxpayers’ psychological reactance to the delay. We further consider whether this indirect effect is different when the taxpayer willingly chooses to paper file their tax return versus when the taxpayer is forced to do so. Consistent with Psychological Reactance Theory (PRT), we find that when taxpayers receive delayed refunds, they experience psychological reactance (e.g., anger and frustration with the tax administration) that increases their tax evasion intentions. Further, we find that the …

How Deep-Level And Surface-Level Board Diversity, Formal And Informal Social Structures Affect Innovation, Guoli Chen, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Yen Teik Lee, Daniel Z. Mack
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite a growing interest in understanding how board diversity shapes firms’ innovation, findings about the impact of board diversity have remained mixed. In this paper, we conceptualize board diversity as two forms – deep-level and surface-level – and find that these two forms of board diversity have opposing effects on a firm's innovation. We also theorize how formal and informal social structures can strengthen the positive effect of deep-level diversity yet simultaneously weaken the negative impact of surface-level diversity. We test our hypotheses with a panel of 42,432 firm-year observations from 2000 to 2019. Our paper contributes to the literature …
An House For The Lord: Solomon's Temple And Temple Worship In Ancient Israel, Dan Belnap
An House For The Lord: Solomon's Temple And Temple Worship In Ancient Israel, Dan Belnap
Faculty Publications
It would not be exaggeration to say that at the center of Old Testament history and theology is covenantal worship and the temple. From the Garden of Eden to the altars constructed by Abraham and the patriarchs, and the portable tabernacle of Moses, the concept of sacred space plays a fundamental role throughout biblical history and in the life of ancient Israel. But during the period of the monarchy, it became possible to construct a permanent house for the Lord. Thus, the construction and dedication of the temple are the primary subject within Solomon’s narrative arc. This chapter explores the …

Although recent studies report a positive relationship between board diversity and firms' invention output, less is known about the mechanisms by which they operate, given that boards are typically far removed from on-the-ground invention activities. Drawing from research on interfaces and social information processing, we propose a theory of diversity cascades across the organizational hierarchy. Specifically, we posit that board diversity has a positive––albeit indirect––influence on firms' invention output. This relationship is mediated by the diversity of top management teams and inventor diversity, as board diversity cascades from the top to lower ranks of an organization. This indirect effect is …

We have created this special issue of the Humanistic Management Journal to explore how the interdependence of humans with one another and the Earth is supported by awareness-based systems change. Together, over a period of many months, we as an editorial team developed the focus and description of what we sought to bring together. The combined research, projects, and practices discussed here respect both science and spiritual traditions as sources of knowledge. The articles are intended to contribute to dialogue and actions that yield meaningful participation of all peoples and help readers see new possibilities for a healthy Earth. We …
Existential Responsibility In Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, And Chiang, Justin F. White
Existential Responsibility In Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, And Chiang, Justin F. White
Faculty Publications
In “Story of Your Life” and “Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom,” Ted Chiang explores questions that would be at home in contemporary scholarship on free will, agency, and moral responsibility. In “Story of Your Life,” Chiang asks whether knowledge of the future is compatible with free will. And the prism technology in “Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom” prompts questions of whether we are responsible for out-of-character actions. If such actions were genuine anomalies, would we be less responsible for them? In these stories, however, these questions are entangled with questions more at home in the existentialist tradition. Put …
Wave Power Extraction From A U-Shaped Oscillating Water Column Consisting Of A Flexible Bottom-Standing Front Wall, Siming Zheng, Haojie Zheng, Simone Michele, Guixun Zhu, Yeaw Chu Lee, Deborah Greaves
Wave Power Extraction From A U-Shaped Oscillating Water Column Consisting Of A Flexible Bottom-Standing Front Wall, Siming Zheng, Haojie Zheng, Simone Michele, Guixun Zhu, Yeaw Chu Lee, Deborah Greaves
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In this paper, the concept of a U-shaped oscillating water column (UOWC) device consisting of a flexible bottom-standing front wall is proposed. The deflection of the flexible wall could bring benefits for wave power absorption. To evaluate the hydrodynamic performance and predict the wave power absorption of the flexible UOWC, a theoretical model based on the linear potential flow theory and the Galerkin approximation method is developed. For some examined flexible UOWCs, three peaks of the frequency response of the maximum wave power capture efficiency are observed, in which two are related to the resonant frequencies of the oscillating water …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Wave energy presents an excellent opportunity to add much-needed diversification to the global renewable energy portfolio. However, a competitive levelised cost of electricity for wave energy conversion devices is yet to be proven. Here, we optimise the geometry of a wave energy device to maximise power while also minimising the power take-off reaction moments. Using theory, numerical modelling and optimisation techniques, we show that by including minimisation of reaction moments in the optimisation, instead of only maximisation of power, it is possible to substantially lower the design loads while maintaining high efficiency. Using the underlying physics of how geometry affects …

A New Cfd-Mbd Wave-Structure Interaction Model: Coupling Openfoam With Chrono, Haifei Chen, Tianyuan Wang, Deborah Greaves, Hongda Shi, Qingping Zou
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Interconnected multibody floating structures have gained popularity recently. The dynamic response of moored interconnected floating bodies to wave action, however, are complicated and challenging to model and analyze. To tackle the problem, a novel wave-structure-interaction (WSI) model is developed for the first time by coupling a finite volume CFD model, OpenFOAM, with Project Chrono, a multi-physics simulation engine for multibody dynamics (MBD) and finite element analysis, through linking pre-compiled dynamic libraries. This paper focuses on dynamic behavior of rigid structures restrained with a mooring system. To account for the floating body motion in the fluid solver, both mesh deformation and …
The Dark Side Of International Cooperation: Indifference And The Psychosocial Dynamics Of Cooperative Deterrence, Jamal Barnes
The Dark Side Of International Cooperation: Indifference And The Psychosocial Dynamics Of Cooperative Deterrence, Jamal Barnes
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
States are increasingly resorting to international cooperative agreements to deter migrants and refugees from irregularly arriving at their borders. Although scholars have shown how these cooperative deterrence policies are undermining important refugee and human rights protections, making migration journeys more dangerous, and securitizing and criminalizing people on the move, what has not been adequately examined is how these cooperative arrangements can bring about normative changes that produce indifference to the suffering of refugees and migrants. This article examines the psychosocial dynamics of cooperative deterrence policies to show how the social processes of authorization, routinization, evasion of responsibility, and dehumanization weaken …

Introduction: Road traffic injuries constitute a significant global health burden, causing 1.3 million deaths and 50million injuries annually, with 92 % of fatalities occurring in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despitethis disproportionate impact, research priorities in post-collision care often reflect high-income country contexts, creating a critical misalignment between evidence generation and contextual realities in LMICs.Methods: This mixed-methods study employed a three-phase approach to identify research priorities for postcollision care in the Western Cape, South Africa. Phase 1 consisted of a comprehensive literature review toidentify preliminary thematic areas and research questions. Phase 2 involved a stakeholder engagement workshop using modified nominal group techniques …

Rivers across the world are increasingly fragmented due to anthropogenic barriers, with the restoration of connectivity often using fish passes. Fish passes are, however, usually designed for anadromous species, despite ecologically important non-anadromous species being present in the communities impacted by fragmentation. To assess the outcomes for non-anadromous fishes of the installation of multiple fish passes and weir modifications, the movements of the potamodromous European barbel Barbus barbus were evaluated in the lower River Severn basin, western Britain, which was fragmented by six weirs (two on a tributary, four on the Severn mainstem). Movements of individual fish were measured using …

A Unified, Data-Informed Model For Shoreline Evolution Due To Longshore And Cross-Shore Processes, Mark Davidson, Emily Hunt, Nieves Valiente
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Due partially to a changing global climate, there is an increasing need to develop a modelling approach capable of providing warnings of coastal evolution, including erosion at storm, interannual and decadal timescales and in complex coastal settings. This research presents a reduced complexity model with a common approach to predicting shoreline change due to cross-shore and longshore processes. The model architecture is designed to be flexible and data-informed, incorporating an Extended Kalman (eKF) for the assimilation of field measurements of shoreline change. Depending on the values of the optimised model free parameters resulting from the eKF assimilation, the longshore and …

Metadata Makes Big Data Useful For Ai/Ml-Ready, Equitable Pandemic Response, Sudarshan Anand, Miae Lee, Seshadri S. Vasan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
While genomic data helps understand the pathogen and its evolution, patient metadata is critical to get the host side of the picture, so that the pandemic response is effective and equitable.
Clinical Relevance: We highlight the importance of patient stratification and metadata to help develop diagnostics, therapies and vaccines as the pathogen (virus) evolves.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), exemplified by tools such as ChatGPT, has posed significant challenges and opportunities in the realm of academic integrity, particularly in engineering education. This commentary critically examines alternative strategies that go beyond traditional assessment security, aiming to uphold academic integrity while embracing the transformative potential of GenAI in teaching and learning. In the context of programs that rely on unit level outcomes to determine the overall student progression (not the programmatic approach to progression), this study identifies and explores four strategies that may offer potential improvements to assessment security: I-risk-level analysis, which aligns the mix of supervised …

Children’S ‘Playbour’ As Influencers On Social Media: An Investigation Into The Legal And Ethical Issues Surrounding Kidfluencers, Catherine J. Archer, Kate Mirandilla Delmo
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The legal and ethical concerns around children performing as social media influencers (SMIs) on various social media platforms have been in the spotlight, with the recent world-first decision by the Australian Government to ban social media for those under 16. Social media influence is big business across the globe, with organisations investing in working with influencers to promote their brands and/or ideas. Some children now ‘work’, often managed by their parents, to produce posts that promote brands and ideas on behalf of organisations–not only to other children but also to adults. This paper presents findings of two case studies of …
Tracking Palaeotemperatures In Coniacian–Maastrichtian Seas, Gregory D. Price, Bryan Low Kai Sheng
Tracking Palaeotemperatures In Coniacian–Maastrichtian Seas, Gregory D. Price, Bryan Low Kai Sheng
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
In this study the stable isotopes of belemnites, are presented from the Coniacian–Maastrichtian interval (∼76–66 Ma) derived from the chalks of Yorkshire and Norfolk, UK, deposited on the western North Atlantic shelf. Cathodoluminescence and elemental geochemistry of the belemnites reveals that most of the rostra were well preserved. If interpreted in terms of temperature, our oxygen isotope record reveals that during the Coniacian (at ∼43 °N) the climate was relatively warm, with maximum mean temperatures of ∼26 °C, followed by cooling to <∼21 °C during the Campanian and Maastrichtian. This overall stratigraphic trend is similar to other records, suggesting that the cooling pattern was not a regional trend and, therefore, driven predominantly by global mechanisms. Within our belemnite data, we also observe a decline in δ13C at the Campanian- Maastrichtian boundary, again consistent with other records. This trend has been interpreted as …∼21>

Surgical subspecialties have successfully combined robotic technology with traditional practices. In doing so, they have benefited from increased precision in techniques, reduced incidence of surgical complications, and reduced MSK disorders. This scoping review aims to examine the extent of cobotics in obstetric ultrasound. The review was conducted using the JBI PRISMA protocol to map the topic of robotics in obstetric ultrasound. Teleoperated remote ultrasound formed the largest combined clinical cohort of 67 patients. Limitations of the 20-week scan concerned incomplete visualization of fetal structures. These included cavum septi pellucidi, cardiac outflow tracts, kidneys, lips and spine. Third trimester scans omitted …

Background: Accurate pre-Ablation differentiation between left (LVOT) and right (RVOT) ventricular outflow tract arrhythmias (OTVAs) using ECG algorithms is essential for decision on vascular access and treatment strategy. However, the most reliable ECG algorithm remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-Analysis (NMA) to compare the diagnostic accuracy of available algorithms. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases through 7 May 2025 for studies evaluating ECG algorithms against ablation-confirmed OTVA origin. A Bayesian diagnostic test accuracy NMA was performed to estimate pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratios (DORs) and a superiority index (S) for each algorithm. Study …
