Being Muslim In European Football: Defining Spaces Of Muslimness, Leif Stenberg, Ridha Sheikh, Esen Kaya

This paper explores the intersection of football and Islam, looking especially at European contexts, and with particular focus on the experiences of Muslim footballers in the UK. By examining the stories of UK Premier League player Cheikhou Kouyaté and amateur footballer Yasmin Abdullahi in London, the paper investigates how these individuals navigate their Muslim identities in the context of their sporting careers. The paper reflects on the broader cultural and societal implications of Muslimness in football, considering how both Muslims and non-Muslims contribute to defining Islamic spaces within the sport. Natural disasters in Central Sulawesi in 2018 damaged the onion and cocoa farming sectors, which are the main sources of livelihood for the local communities. Post-disaster economic recovery requires sustainable empowerment programs, such as access to capital, agricultural technology, and training to enhance farmers’ capacity. BAZNAS collaborated with PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) through SMI’s CSR program to implement an empowerment initiative for onion farmers in Guntarano Village (Tanantovea Subdistrict, Donggala Regency) and Duyu Subdistrict (Tatanga Subdistrict, Palu City), as well as cocoa farmers in Tuva Village (Gumbasa Subdistrict, Sigi Regency), areas affected by the Central Sulawesi earthquake. This research addresses the investment in gold company stocks from a fiqhi (juridical) perspective, focusing on the legal classification of purchasing stocks in companies whose primary assets are gold. The study highlights the fiqhi rulings regarding gold and silver, with emphasis on the condition of equivalence and handover in financial transactions. As financial markets have evolved, the trading of gold company stocks has raised questions about the legitimacy of such transactions and their compliance with Islamic law. The chapter analyzes the ubiquitous presence of crime investigations in contemporary Egyptian television drama, away from genre definitions of crime drama. By focusing on who conducts these investigations, the chapter maps the typologies of investigators on the small screen. The ‘conventional’ investigators of global crime drama are an extremely rare occurrence on Egyptian television, and even when they exist in the original work they tend to be marginalized in the adaptation. A host of ordinary citizens, on the contrary, are extremely busy carrying out investigations on the Egyptian small screen. The limited number of Sharia-compliant venture capital companies results in restricted access for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (Usaha Mikro, Keci, dan Menengahl/UMKM) to alternative funding sources. This limitation may also stem from a lack of literacy regarding Islamic economics and finance among venture capital business players and the broader business community. Whilst not ignoring theological discussions on the subject of Muslim-Christian dialogue, the present analysis of Muslim-Christian or Muslim-Catholic relations will not be conducted from a historical-theological perspective. It will be limited to the political and geopolitical aspects of the work undertaken by the Holy See and Pope Francis since 2013. The argument put forward here is that since the beginning of the current pontificate, there has been a major change in the order of relations between Catholicism and Islam, which has had an impact on the international scene and should therefore be closely watched by states.
