Mary Jane Mossman’S Quiet Rebels: A History Of Ontario Women Lawyers (Waterloo: Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2024), Patricia Mcmahon
Journal of Law and Social Policy
ON AN APRIL EVENING IN 1927, a group of thirty-seven women came together for dinner in Toronto at the King Edward Hotel for the annual meeting of the Women’s Law Association of Ontario (WLAO). That night, they celebrated the 30th anniversary of Clara Brett Martin’s call to the bar and the 60th anniversary of Confederation.
Working Paper: The Role Of Nafeer And Social Networks In Sudan’S Humanitarian Response And The Challenges For International Aid, Mazin Sharfi
The Journal of Social Encounters
This paper explores the integral role of Nafeer, a traditional Sudanese communal practice, and social networks in addressing humanitarian crises, focusing on the ongoing 2023 conflict. Nafeer, rooted in rural agricultural settings, has evolved to mobilise urban communities for emergency responses, while social networks extend social support beyond family ties, providing a complementary layer of resource-sharing. Both systems, decentralised and grassroots in nature, contrast sharply with formal international aid structures. The research highlights how Nafeer and social networks mobilise resources through traditional means, such as mobilising social capital and economic resources including remittances, and modern mechanisms, like crowdfunding. It underscores …

Evaluating Biotic Effecrs Associated With The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum In Mississippi And Alabama: A Palynological And Biostratigraphic Study Of Amoco's Legacy Samples, Sarah Fortin Bancroft
LSU Master's Theses
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a ~200 ka period of rapid global warming in the earliest Eocene (~56 Ma) involving a roughly 7 °C rise in atmospheric and sea-surface temperatures. The Gulf of Mexico Wilcox Group contains very well-preserved terrestrial and deltaic sediments that contain exploitable hydrocarbons . The Wilcox Group’s Paleocene Tuscahoma and Eocene Hatchetigbee Formations have been roughly dated with calcareous and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages by AMOCO; however, the precise ages of these formations, their palynological assemblages, and their paleo-depositional geosystems are an area of active research.
Through a high-resolution palynological analysis, this study assesses the depositional …

Revitalizing Visual Identity: A Framework To Improve The Quality Of Urban Space In Historic Districts Case Study: Al-Saliba Street, Cairo, Ahmed Mohamed Thabet
Journal of Engineering Research
Recently, the visual identity of urban spaces represents a basic variable of human-made environments. Because the human is being affected by the natural and artificial surroundings of his environment, the cultural values, and the social environment participate in the creation of urban spaces. Therefore, the importance of evaluating the visual identity of urban spaces becomes evident in their improved qualities. In this context, the historic districts contain planning patterns, social networks, historic buildings, ceremonial rituals, and traditional lifestyles, crafts, and skills. All of that forms the uniqueness of the cities that contain historical sites and configures the visual identity of …

A More Perfect Disunion: Warning Signs Of Revolution And Regime Collapse, Elena Mccloy
A More Perfect Disunion: Warning Signs Of Revolution And Regime Collapse, Elena Mccloy
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
In the 14th Century, the late European Latin lexicon had a new word to describe the cyclical nature in which regimes found themselves moving from periods of prosperity to periods of discontent, with each revolution fueled by the belief that radical change was necessary for survival. History rewards us with the opportunity to examine each cycle of revolution for distinct patterns of recurrence, so that we may be better prepared for the next stages of change. This paper outlines the most common trends indicating political upheaval, studying current and historical examples from The United States, the Middle East, and …

Discounting Effect Size When Borrowing External Data In Clinical Studies, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Chul Ahn, Bin Wang, Xuefeng Li
Discounting Effect Size When Borrowing External Data In Clinical Studies, Zhuanzhuan Ma, Chul Ahn, Bin Wang, Xuefeng Li
Research Symposium
Background: When borrowing information from external data to augment a current trial, many available methods discount the sample size but retain the effect size from previous studies. Discounting the sample size is just one way to discount the prior information. It may not be appropriate if the underlying assumption of unbiased treatment effect does not hold, for example, when the treatment effect in the historical study is likely higher than the one expected in the current trial.
Methods: To tackle this potential issue, we study some methods to shrink the effect size from previous studies assuming that the prior effect …

“The Mixed-Up-Ness Is The Complete Picture:” Lessons From Vietnamese American Understandings Of Family Histories, Van Anh Tran
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
The experiences of refugees and their children contribute to a complex narrative of remembrance, citizenship, and belonging in the United States. In this study, I analyze the narratives and multimedia creations of the children of Vietnamese refugees to explore how they negotiate generational memories to make meaning of their personal identities and family histories. I organized participants' ways of processing their families’ histories around themes of fracture, excavation, and return. I argue that their approaches show how they began/continued to heal and how they could, then, re-member. The meaning-making processes of Vietnamese American young people offer powerful considerations for educators …
Anarcho-Syndicalism In The Negaunee Branch Of The Finnish Socialist Association, Michael P. Selwa
Anarcho-Syndicalism In The Negaunee Branch Of The Finnish Socialist Association, Michael P. Selwa
HS 390 Primary Research Papers
Socialism reached a prominence as a movement in the United States during the early 20th century. Fueled by the machinations of industrial capitalism and labor reform, many workers, immigrants, and other individuals would arrive to the precepts of socialism, a political movement avowing to shirk the constraints of capitalism on the proletariat. Specifically, the question of why and how labor unions should function in a socialist society was a central tenet of debate within the faction of the American Socialist Party. The central question of this article is to examine why anarcho-syndicalists argued against traditional socialist reformist arguments in the …
A Study Of The Impact Of Brand Management Strategies On Brand Rejuvenation - Evidence Based On Chinese Baijiu Brands, Hao Chen
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In recent years, China Baijiu industry has faced the challenges of a shrinking consumer market, aging and the rise of young consumers, prompting Baijiu brands to seek new growth points, especially to attract younger groups. As a result, brand rejuvenation has become a key strategic objective for spirits companies. Given that brand extension and brand alliance are effective strategies for traditional brands to expand into new markets, this study develops a model to explore the impact of these two brand management strategies on Baijiu brand rejuvenation and analyses the mediating roles of brand image and brand awareness as well as …

Utility Of Self-Sensing Damage Technology Through A2/Ad Drone Combat Simulation, Sidhanth Venkatasubramaniam
Theses and Dissertations
Since the introduction of the first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), UAVs have consistently improved in capability and versatility. The ability to perform military operations without the risk of losing human life is crucial for the United States military. The trade-off for this versatility is cost, and several ongoing research efforts are being made to improve UAV mission success and the lifespan of UAVs. An area of research that falls under the categories mentioned is self-damage detection. The Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) are developing a capability to enable a UAV to assess airframe damage, enabling real-time determination of damage potentially …

Advancing Defense Software Cost Estimation Through Regression, Probabilistic, And Machine Learning Models, Stephen D. Chatterton
Theses and Dissertations
Accurately estimating software costs is critical for effective project management within the Department of Defense (DoD), where early decisions shape resource allocation and risk management. This work evaluates regression-based Cost Estimating Relationships (CERs), probabilistic models, and machine learning techniques to address limitations of traditional estimation methods. Using records from two DoD repositories, the analysis applied Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression, Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR), Random Forest, and neural networks to model and classify software costs, with key predictors including Source Lines of Code (SLOC), Equivalent Source Lines of Code (ESLOC), and programming hours. The findings highlight strengths and trade-offs of …

Calibrating Airfield Pavement Asset Management For A Changing Global Climate: A Case Study At Fairchild Air Force Base, Emily L. Worthy
Theses and Dissertations
Military airfields and civilian airports serve as foundational nodes in the global transportation network, enabling travel, economic growth, and the projection of national security. This study investigates the relationship between climate variables projected through climate change and pavement degradation, with a focus on Fairchild Air Force Base (AFB). Using principal component regression (PCR), the research integrates historical pavement condition index (PCI) data with climate variables, including snowfall, precipitation, freeze-thaw cycles, solar irradiance, and wind speed to develop a predictive model of pavement performance under future climate scenarios, Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5. These models, for both Portland …

Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler
The Geographical Bulletin
Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.
Defending The Doctrine Of Hell, Jordan P. Ballard
Defending The Doctrine Of Hell, Jordan P. Ballard
Liberty Theological Review
The doctrine of hell, or the final state of the wicked, has become one of the most objectionable Christian doctrines because it depicts God as vengeful and wrathful, which is offensive to human sensibilities. As an extension of the problem of evil, where God is put on trial for allowing what may appear to be gratuitous pain and suffering in the world, many Christians and non-Christians alike wonder how a loving God could consign people to suffering in hell forever. After all, why didn’t God make a world where all would be saved if He is truly loving? Belief in …

A Review Examining The Factors Contributory To The Socialization Of A Culture Of Environmental Stewardship, Colby Nixon
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Environmental stewardship is an ambiguous but significant term meaning that responsibility for the environment — and its quality — is shared between all individuals who interact with it. As a culture-wide phenomena, it is correlated with a mutualistic relationship with nature and the Earth. My study responds to a question as to which and how variables contribute to a societal mindset of environmental stewardship. This review synthesizes numerous studies across diverse cultures and contexts to examine trends therein. In doing so, I discovered that religion, policy, human development, linguistics, and economic roles play a part in socializing environmental stewardship into …
