How To Join Teams: Individual Factors That Influence An Incoming Team Member’S Understanding Of The Team’S Shared Mental Models, Madeline Filippi
How To Join Teams: Individual Factors That Influence An Incoming Team Member’S Understanding Of The Team’S Shared Mental Models, Madeline Filippi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study examined the effect of various individual differences on accuracy of incoming team members’ learning the team’s task and team shared mental models by leveraging literature on shared mental models and team member replacement. The four individual differences (openness to experience, perspective taking, social curiosity and trait negative affect) were hypothesized to positively impact the incoming team member’s ability to understand the team’s shared mental models through the theoretical mechanism of cue identification. Participants were asked to imagine they were entering a student organization executive team and based on characteristics (responsibilities, preferences, attitudes) of the team members in the …
The Benefit Of Benefits: The Role Of Fringe Job Benefits On The Recruitment Of Deskless Workers, Hannah A. Crandell
The Benefit Of Benefits: The Role Of Fringe Job Benefits On The Recruitment Of Deskless Workers, Hannah A. Crandell
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Research indicates that the advertisement of fringe job benefits are related to positive job seeker perceptions of the organization and job pursuit intentions. Drawing from Conservation of Resources Theory, I investigate how different types of fringe benefits related to people’s motivations to obtain, enhance, or retain resources differentially attract them to an organization. The study also examines the role of financial well-being as a moderator of fringe benefits and anticipated organizational support. Further, I assess the relationship between fringe benefits and job pursuit intentions through the serial mechanisms of anticipated organizational support and organizational attractiveness. Findings suggest that fringe benefits …
Older Adult Centered Robot Assessment: Usability, Social Presence, And Acceptance. Building Towards A Better Robot., Jordan Sasser
Older Adult Centered Robot Assessment: Usability, Social Presence, And Acceptance. Building Towards A Better Robot., Jordan Sasser
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation investigated factors influencing older adults' perceptions of Misty, a voice-enabled social robot designed for caregiving interactions. Three sequential studies explored how voice characteristics (pitch and speech rate), robot persona (personable vs. robotic), and task guidance (Misty guiding through timed up and go and four stage balance task) influenced usability, social presence, acceptance, and perceptions of medical assistant competence. Study 1 employed thematic and quantitative usability analyses, identifying that lower-pitched, moderately paced voices optimized user satisfaction, while repetitive activation phrases ("Hey Misty") significantly reduced usability. Study 2 examined how persona framing (personable vs. robotic) influenced perceptions of social presence …
Going Green: Testing An Ambient Nature Work Environment As An Employee Energy Charger, Nina D. Steigerwald
Going Green: Testing An Ambient Nature Work Environment As An Employee Energy Charger, Nina D. Steigerwald
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Amidst rising levels of employee burnout, research on recovery from work stress has been on the rise. Organizational scholars examining predictors of recovery have almost exclusively relied on the Effort-Recovery Model (Meijman & Mulder, 1998), positing the absence of work demands as a prerequisite for resource restoration. Departing from this perspective and envisioning recovery akin to recharging a battery, the Nature Charger Model was proposed. It suggests that employee energy rejuvenation can occur even in the presence of demands. Specifically, drawing from alternative frameworks (Kaplan & Kaplan’s 1989 Attention Restoration Theory; Brosschot et al.’s 2018 Generalized Unsafety Theory of Stress), …
Retirement Adjustment: Subjective And Social Well-Being Of Retirees In Response To The Preretirement Work-Nonwork Interface, Yeeun Choi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Retirement represents a significant life transition that profoundly impacts one’s subjective and social well-being. Drawing on the life course perspective, this study investigated retirement adjustment by analyzing the longitudinal patterns of well-being and the predictors influencing these trajectories. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study combined 16 years of longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) (nA = 1,470, nB = 1,422) with qualitative narratives from retirees (n = 30) to provide a comprehensive understanding of the retirement adjustment process. The growth mixture model (GMM) analysis identified four distinct patterns in retirees' life satisfaction trajectories …
The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Child Maltreatment Potential With Racial And Ethnic Considerations, Madison V. Verdone
The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Child Maltreatment Potential With Racial And Ethnic Considerations, Madison V. Verdone
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Referrals to Child Protective Services in the United States rise each year at a rate that is disproportionate to population growth (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2022). The content of such reports includes instances of abuse, neglect, and/or suspicion of other types of violence against children. As such, it is clear that children are increasingly exposed to adverse experiences that impact their development. Understanding factors that may contribute to children’s exposure to adverse experiences may assist in breaking the cycle of intergenerational transmission. Thus, this study examined the relationships among parents’ adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), emotion dysregulation, and …
Parents’ Adverse Childhood Experiences And Young Children’S Behavior Problems: Examining Protective Moderating And Mediating Factors, Kaitlyn M. Daleandro
Parents’ Adverse Childhood Experiences And Young Children’S Behavior Problems: Examining Protective Moderating And Mediating Factors, Kaitlyn M. Daleandro
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are childhood exposures to abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. ACEs have been linked to a cumulative negative impact on later adult physical and psychological well-being. Parents who carry ACEs often have difficulties in parenting, which have, in turn, been linked to young children’s internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Nonetheless, some parents who carry ACEs develop positive parenting strategies. Very little is known about how such outcomes occur. A growing area of research concerns protective and compensatory experiences (PACEs) that buffer against the negative consequences of ACEs. PACEs may improve deficits in cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological systems …
Sexual And Gender Minority Identity Acceptance And The Role Of Florida Legislation Perception On Medical Disclosure And Risky Health Behaviors, Aubrianna L. Stuckey
Sexual And Gender Minority Identity Acceptance And The Role Of Florida Legislation Perception On Medical Disclosure And Risky Health Behaviors, Aubrianna L. Stuckey
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Recently, across the United States, efforts have been made to remove protective legislation and resources surrounding the sexual gender minority (SGM) community (Woodford et al., 2018). Given how quickly Florida’s HB 1557 legislation was passed and the corresponding, ongoing attempts to expand the bills, there is limited research exploring the role of legislative change on SGM communities. Newer literature indicates that discriminatory laws or bills have impacted the mental health of the SGM community, especially among SGM adolescent and young adults ; however, research exploring the role legislation has on SGM individual’s physical health, requires further investigation(American Psychological Association, 2023; …
Burnout In The Workplace- Organizational Influences On Counselor Burnout, Serene Hasan
Burnout In The Workplace- Organizational Influences On Counselor Burnout, Serene Hasan
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study is a two-part manuscript dissertation that examined the impact of the six organizational influencers of burnout: Workload, Control, Reward, Community, Fairness, and Values on mental health counselors’ (MHCs) burnout, using Maslach’s three subscales of burnout: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. Additionally, Work Setting and Age were assessed for their influence on MHC burnout, when the six organizational influencers were accounted for. The focus on this topic is crucial as burnout has a detrimental effect on counselors, clients, and organizations. The growing population in need of support surpasses the amount of MHCs that our nation has to offer. …
Quality Of Service Robots And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: The Mediating Roles Of State Empathy And Perceived Organizational Support/Obstruction, Adam D. Jacobs
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Research on service robots is currently more conceptual than it is empirical. This thesis leverages resource allocation and social exchange theories to explain how employees choose to expend their resources depending on the functioning of the service robot. I propose that service robot quality (defined here as an employee’s perception of the usefulness and ease of use of a service robot) is an important consideration for organizations that adopt service robots, and hypothesize that employee state empathy and support (or obstruction) from their organization links service robot quality to employee organizational citizenship behaviors. The study consisted of 166 participants from …

Impacts Of Susceptibility To Peer Influence And Fomo On Viewing Alcohol-Related Content On Social Media, Alcohol Expectancies, And Alcohol Use, Callie L. Wang
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
PURPOSE: Young adult (YA) alcohol use remains a significant public health problem, and may be influenced by alcohol expectancies developed through exposure to peers’ alcohol related content (ARC) on social media. This study examined the associations among ARC exposure, alcohol expectancies and alcohol use among YAs, and how susceptibility to peer influence and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) may influence these relations. METHOD: YAs in the United States who endorsed consuming 1-2 standard drinks per month (N=371) completed surveys measuring ARC exposure, alcohol expectancies, susceptibility to peer influence, FoMO, and alcohol use at baseline and at 4- and 8-week follow …
The Role Of Social Media On Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Self-Esteem Imposter Phenomenon, And Identity Distress, Julie Hall
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis explored the relationships between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), self-esteem, masking, Imposter Phenomenon (IP), and identity distress, along with the role in which social media integration plays in these relationships. Participants (N = 500) were recruited through SONA, a research recruitment database, and completed an anonymous online survey for course credit. Those who met the DSM-5 -TR criteria for ADHD had higher levels of IP, integration of social media, and Identity Distress, but lower levels of self-esteem compared to students who did not meet criteria for ADHD. This study is the first to explore the link between ADHD and …

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study seeks to understand the therapeutic potential of multiple prominent hallucinogens (LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, Cannabis, and DMT) by examining corresponding posttraumatic growth, transformational identity change, and experience(s) of mystical phenomena. College students (N = 278) completed an anonymous online survey. The data was analyzed to assess hallucinogen usage history and possible changes, as well as any significant differences between each hallucinogen. Participants were first asked about their hallucinogen usage including which hallucinogens they have specifically used, number of uses, age of first use, and the last time they used. They were also asked to rate their short-term vs …
Confirming The Factor Structure Of The Police Officer Stigma Scale, Daniel R. Horning
Confirming The Factor Structure Of The Police Officer Stigma Scale, Daniel R. Horning
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
First responders routinely face exposure to critical incidents within the line of duty, resulting in higher prevalence of psychopathological conditions compared to the general population. However, a growing body of research identified a severe underutilization of mental health-related services among this population, with stigma towards mental illness being the most cited barrier to seeking care. Stigma as a construct is being actively measured, but the factor structure of stigma towards mental health remains contested in literature. Optimal model fit for Stuart’s Police Officer Stigma Scale is an example of these empirical debates, as both single-factor and two-factor models are offered …
Men’S Aggressive Responses To Sexual Rejection: The Roles Of Rejection Sensitivity, Alcohol Use, And Perceived Injustice, Cameron A. Davis
Men’S Aggressive Responses To Sexual Rejection: The Roles Of Rejection Sensitivity, Alcohol Use, And Perceived Injustice, Cameron A. Davis
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
PURPOSE: Sexual rejection can be often associated with an aggressive response. Prior research has identified rejection sensitivity as a risk factor for aggressive behavior, however, it has not been investigated in the context of sexual rejection. Highly rejection sensitive men may attend to negative cues, feel “betrayed,” and respond aggressively, especially after consuming alcohol. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the perpetration of aggressive responses to sexual rejection by examining the roles of rejection sensitivity, perceived injustice, and alcohol use in a sample of young adult men. METHOD: Men (n = 447) who endorsed one lifetime …
Identity Impacts Of Crafting In Multiple Life Domains Among Employees With Chronic Mental And Physical Illnesses: A Mixed-Method Study, Kenzie Dye
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation examined the impact of job, home, and leisure crafting on perceptions of five markers of positive work identity among employees with chronic mental and physical illnesses. It was hypothesized that all forms of crafting would be positively related to work identity perceptions when examined independently, and that job crafting would be the strongest predictor when the crafting categories were examined together. It was also predicted that home and leisure crafting would amplify the effects of job crafting on positive work identity. Based on qualitative data collected from focus groups comprised of individuals with a variety of chronic mental …
Digital Biomarkers Of Usability, Steven Ford
Digital Biomarkers Of Usability, Steven Ford
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Usability, the extent to which a product can be used with satisfaction and efficiency, is critical for its success, yet traditional assessment methods are often subjective or resource-intensive. This dissertation adapts the concept of digital biomarkers—objective, quantifiable data typically used to inform health outcomes—to summative usability assessment. By examining passively collected mouse and eye movement data, this research pinpoints reliable digital biomarkers that forecast subjective usability ratings, effectively assessing the 'health' of digital systems. Three studies were conducted to demonstrate that metrics based on eye and mouse-cursor movements can accurately predict standard usability survey scores across a wide array of …

Examination Of Driving Experience, Hazard Perception & Distracted Driving: Going Beyond Individual Factors By Using A Social-Ecological Framework, Alejandro A. Arca
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This research included two studies that examined the roles of nomophobia, driving experience, distraction presence, and hazard presence on driving behavior. In Study 1, a hazard perception task was used to assess participants’ hazard perception accuracy rate and reaction time. Results showed that novice drivers displayed significantly higher levels of nomophobia and lower self-efficacy scores, divided attention, and working memory scores compared to their experienced counterparts. Furthermore, the results also showed that novice drivers reported faster reaction times to hazards, which may be associated with poor impulse control as previously reported in the literature. Study 2 was conducted to further …

Firefighter Syndrome: Improving The Identification And Classification Of Firefighters In Need, Michael A. Schlenk
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Firefighters (FFs) exhibit a multitude of behavioral and physical health concerns as well as fluctuating social support due to their occupation. Despite the fire service enacting preventative approaches to health and wellness, FFs still report increased prevalences of health concerns at the end of their career. Firefighter syndrome was created to identify FFs in need of medical care (e.g., behavioral and physical health services, Frueh et al., 2022b). The purpose of this study is to validate the construct of FF Syndrome by using statistical classification techniques to investigate whether there is a latent group of firefighters that have the symptoms …
The Role Of Substance Use And Objectification On Bisexual Women’S Sexual Violence Experiences, Rachel Cooper
The Role Of Substance Use And Objectification On Bisexual Women’S Sexual Violence Experiences, Rachel Cooper
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Bisexual women experience the highest rates of sexual violence victimization, across all tactics, compared to all other gender and sexual orientation groups. Bisexual women’s higher rates of substance use puts them at greater risk for substance-facilitated sexual violence, however this does not account for higher rates of sexual violence that happen through other tactics. Objectification theory states that people learn to view women as sexual objects, whose value derives from their bodies’ sexual utility and this view increases the likelihood of sexual violence. Bisexual women experience an additional form of objectification in the form of bisexual stigma which is characterized …

Safeguarding Our Literature, Christopher J. Smiley
Safeguarding Our Literature, Christopher J. Smiley
AADEJ - The Communicator
AADEJ President Chris Smiley draws a parallel between his personal experience of a well-intentioned but chaotic "stealth cleaning campaign" of his study by his wife, which left him unable to locate important documents, and the systematic scrubbing of freely available resources by federal agencies. He highlights concerns that politically driven directives are restricting information dissemination, citing examples from the CDC and USDA related to terms like "evidence-based," "science-based," and climate change, as well as vital health topics. The article quotes the British Medical Journal's strong condemnation of such actions, calling it "absurd" and "egregious" to erase medically relevant terminology. Smiley …

Copyright Law And The Importance Of Protecting Your Publication, Cameron A. Cameron A. Parks Esq.
AADEJ - The Communicator
This piece provides an overview of copyright law as a crucial form of intellectual property protection in journalism and publishing. It explains that copyright automatically arises when an original work is fixed in a tangible form. While registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is not required, it offers stronger protection, the ability to sue for infringement, and statutory damages. The article outlines copyright terms (life of author plus 70 years, or 95/120 years for works made for hire) and notes that facts alone are not copyrightable, but the unique text style, sequence, and original photographs can be protected. It emphasizes …

This article is featured as a recipient of a 2024 AADEJ-ADEAGies Foundation Editorial Award. It explores the growing presence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in everyday life and its specific implications for dentistry. While AI shows great promise in improving diagnostic accuracy in dentistry, the author cautions that it is not without limitations and potential mistakes, such as overfitting, lack of contextual information, limited data diversity, false positives/negatives, inadequate training data, and sensitivity to image quality. The piece stresses that AI should augment, not replace, dental professionals, serving as a supportive aid rather than a definitive diagnostic tool. Key benefits …

Shakespeare’S Skull, Daniel L. Orr Ii, Dds, Ms, Ph.D., Jd, Md
AADEJ - The Communicator
This editorial discusses the long-standing rumor that William Shakespeare's skull was stolen from his grave. An anonymous story from 1879, initially dismissed as fiction, gained new attention in 2016 during the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. A 2016 British Broadcasting Company (BBC) production documented findings from Staffordshire University's study using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) on Shakespeare's grave at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. The archaeologist Kevin Colls from Staffordshire University concluded that Shakespeare's remains are indeed in the grave, "not counting the cranio-maxillofacial components," suggesting the skull may be missing. Despite these findings, the Vicar of Holy Trinity has stated that …
