Fishing For Empathy: Fishbowls And Neurorhetorics For Mitigating Bias, Prejudice, And Hate In Human Relations, Shalina Jasmine Akins, Steven Ray Krivanek

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

This study explored bias, prejudice, and hate from anthropological, neurobiological, and social-cognitive psychological lenses to better understand dehumanization of the “other.” The concept of neurorhetorics was introduced as a framework for understanding and mitigating our natural propensity to disparage and ridicule that which is not us. Neurorhetorics was explored as a means to mitigate bias, build bridges, and promote empathy and understanding across any and all differences. The Fishbowl model of communication was used as an intervention framework and this study examined its efficacy as an alternative to traditional rhetorical methods of discourse such as interviews, debates, and focus groups …

Exploring Leadership Capabilities Developed As A Mother: Toward A New Theory Of Mother-Leader Intuitionship, Melinda Abel Ursino, Laura Marie Rivera

Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations

Your perspective as a Mom changes the way you lead in every aspect.

— Liuba Grechen Shirley, VoteMama Founder

Throughout the history of the United States, there has never been such a substantial rise in the number of Mothers in the paid workforce as in the last 3 decades. Yet, despite this growth they remain underrepresented in leadership positions. This underscores why we, as both researchers and Mothers, believe it is critical to apply a Mother's lens to conversations about workplace leadership. Our research begins by examining contemporary leadership theories, focusing on parallels between Motherhood and four of the popular …

Duped: The Implications Of The Proliferaiton Of Superfake Luxury Goods And What Consumers May Not Have Considered, Riann Colbert Jan 2025

Duped: The Implications Of The Proliferaiton Of Superfake Luxury Goods And What Consumers May Not Have Considered, Riann Colbert

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The proliferation of "Superfake" luxury goods, which are high-quality counterfeit items nearly indistinguishable from authentic products, poses significant challenges to trademark law, consumer protection, and the broader economy. These items, often sold through e-commerce platforms, not only undermine legitimate businesses but also expose consumers to health risks, support organized crime, and perpetuate environmental harm. The note advocates for enhanced legal frameworks and consumer education to mitigate these issues.

Time For A Clean Finish? Analyzing A New Path To Collective Bargaining At The Wwe, Paige Green Jan 2025

Time For A Clean Finish? Analyzing A New Path To Collective Bargaining At The Wwe, Paige Green

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

The note argues that professional wrestlers in the WWE face significant challenges in achieving fair compensation and better working conditions due to their classification as independent contractors, which denies them protections under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). It proposes that leveraging antitrust law could provide an alternative and effective strategy for wrestlers to collectively bargain and improve their circumstances, drawing parallels to successful efforts by UFC fighters.

Hospitals Pay The Price: Sex Abuse Cover-Ups Accountable Under New York Adult Survivors Act, Olivia Cohen Jan 2025

Hospitals Pay The Price: Sex Abuse Cover-Ups Accountable Under New York Adult Survivors Act, Olivia Cohen

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that hospitals often fail to address sexual abuse, prioritizing their reputations over patient safety, and that the New York Adult Survivors Act (NYASA) provides a critical but insufficient avenue for accountability. While the NYASA allows survivors to sue abusers and enabling institutions, its one-year lookback window excludes many victims, emphasizing the need for expansion to ensure justice and institutional reform.

From Proposal To Practice: Unpacking The Failed New Jersey Joint Custody Bills And Their Implications For Domestic Violence Victims, Jenna Rosenstein Jan 2025

From Proposal To Practice: Unpacking The Failed New Jersey Joint Custody Bills And Their Implications For Domestic Violence Victims, Jenna Rosenstein

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note critically examines the failed 2018 New Jersey bills proposing a presumption of joint legal and physical custody in child custody matters, arguing that such measures may inadvertently harm victims of domestic violence by shifting the burden of proof onto them and failing to account for the complexities of abuse. It advocates for a more nuanced legal framework that balances shared parenting with the safety and well-being of domestic violence victims and their children.

"Baby-Steps For Baby Business": Diverse Market, Challenges, And Workable International Regulation For Cross-Border Commercial Surrogacy, Ellene Ko Jan 2025

"Baby-Steps For Baby Business": Diverse Market, Challenges, And Workable International Regulation For Cross-Border Commercial Surrogacy, Ellene Ko

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note examines the rapid growth of transnational commercial surrogacy as a multibillion-dollar industry, driven by assisted reproductive technologies and fertility tourism. It highlights the legal conflicts and challenges arising from the patchwork of international surrogacy regulations, including issues of citizenship, exploitation, and enforcement of cross-border contracts. The analysis advocates for an international convention to establish a clear legal framework for transnational surrogacy, emphasizing the need for shared responsibility between global and national oversight bodies to prevent exploitation and ensure ethical practices.

Healing An Unimaginable Loss: How Social Media Platforms Can Help Bereaved Parents Through Adr, Molly Baraban Jan 2025

Healing An Unimaginable Loss: How Social Media Platforms Can Help Bereaved Parents Through Adr, Molly Baraban

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will argue that Alternative Dispute Resolution ("ADR") can successfully be utilized to mediate disputes between parents and social media platforms to facilitate account access in certain instances where a minor child has passed away in a manner that warrants answers. This Note will argue that the rise in mediation being used to resolve probate issues and reform of arbitration use amongst social media platforms, coupled with the continued increase of minors using social media, indicates opportunities for settlements between parents and platforms. This Note will then propose a multi-tiered approach, that would first utilize a conciliator who is …

The Article describes how AI can assist intervenors to overcome the barriers to …

A Public For The Problem: Vocabularies Of Belonging At The Climate Precipice, Louisa Stredwick Jan 2025

A Public For The Problem: Vocabularies Of Belonging At The Climate Precipice, Louisa Stredwick

Theses

This study proposes the central concepts of belonging and vocabulary to critically analyse and recompose current approaches to more-than-human relationship that are inadequate and counterproductive. Contemporary vocabularies of belonging are inadequate because they fail to account for the practicalities of an expansive human and more-than-human ‘we’, and they are underpinned by extractivist or idealist logics. They are counterproductive because they carry embedded dualisms that often directly counter intended messages of inherent relationality. A largely theoretical work, the thesis is informed by a field philosophy approach in the Environmental Humanities, working alongside the Martuwarra (Fitzroy) River, in North-Western Australia, and its …

Leading To Serve: Participants' Perception Of A Servant Leadership Program In Anglican School Contexts, Keith Charles Peterson

Theses

This PhD study researched the impact of a servant leadership development program on the culture and practice of two Anglican faith schools. The intent was to document and enhance these schools’ culture and practice through the design, application and outcomes of this developmental process. The rationale for this study stems from the increasing awareness of servant leadership as a formatively based approach that has depth and integrity of alignment with the relationally set values of care, community and service implicit to faith-based education. By demonstrating the alignment between the intent for servant leadership and its actual application and outcomes, this …

The patient-level variables in the South Carolina HIV registry system were used to calculate the aggregated county-level linkage to care percentage. Then, we used four indices to measure racial disparities in the county-level percentage of timely linkage to care, i.e., the Black-White ratio, index of disparity (ID), weighted ID, …

Nursing Students' Clinical Placement Experience In A Residential Aged Care Facility: A Comparative Study, Nitasha Aarni Narayan Jan 2025

Nursing Students' Clinical Placement Experience In A Residential Aged Care Facility: A Comparative Study, Nitasha Aarni Narayan

Theses

Nursing education programs play a significant role in preparing future nurses to care for the growing number of older people who will require health care. A key component of this preparation is the learning that nursing students acquire through clinical placement experience in a residential aged care facility. This clinical placement provides them with opportunities to experience caring for older adults. However, many students are reportedly reluctant to accept clinical placement in aged care and are ill-prepared for the challenges of the residential aged care facility environment. Hence, it is important for the development of future nursing programs and the …
