Endoscopic Management Of Third Ventricular Colloid Cysts: Efficacy, Safety, Technique, Result, And Limitations, Mohammad Abdulsalam Soliman
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, benign lesions that may cause life-threatening obstructive hydrocephalus. Full-endoscopic resection has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to microsurgical approaches. This study evaluates the surgical outcomes and safety profile of the trans-frontal endoscopic technique, with emphasis on the swiveling technique for capsule excision. Methods: This retrospective and prospective cohort study included 24 patients who underwent full-endoscopic trans-frontal resection of third ventricular colloid cysts at Al- Ahrar Teaching Hospital, a tertiary neurosurgical center in Egypt, between January 2016 and December 2024. All procedures were performed using a 6° angled rigid neuroendoscopy with …
Student Affairs Professionals' Sensemaking Following Student Disclosures Of Mental Health Concerns, Andrea L. Meluch, Alison Doehring, Maria Hannah
Student Affairs Professionals' Sensemaking Following Student Disclosures Of Mental Health Concerns, Andrea L. Meluch, Alison Doehring, Maria Hannah
Iowa Journal of Communication
Based on semi-structured interviews with 23 participants, this study explores how student affairs professionals in higher education make sense of the role-related and communication-related challenges that they face when students disclose mental health concerns. Study results indicated that participants construct their role as student affairs professionals as advocates and sources of support for students struggling with mental health. However, despite framing their role as “helpers” to students, participants noted that they must navigate mental health resources within and beyond their institution, manage constraints on their role, and grapple with external factors that inhibit students’ ability to receive mental health support. …
Teasing In Romantic Relationships: The Roles Of Attachment Dimensions, Relational Uncertainty, And Interpersonal Attraction, Nathan Miczo
Teasing In Romantic Relationships: The Roles Of Attachment Dimensions, Relational Uncertainty, And Interpersonal Attraction, Nathan Miczo
Iowa Journal of Communication
Drawing upon DiCioccio’s interactionist model of teasing, this study examined positive and negative teasing in romantic relationships, with relational uncertainty and interpersonal attraction as mediators. Participants completed measures of teasing, attachment, relational uncertainty, and interpersonal attraction. Affectionate teasing was positively predicted by anxious attachment, physical attraction, and social attraction, and negatively predicted by avoidant attachment. Social attraction mediated the relationship between anxiety and affectionate teasing, while physical attraction and social attraction were mediators between avoidance and affectionate teasing. There were no significant results for relational uncertainty as a predictor or for aggressive teasing as an outcome.

Pandemic Impact On Research Faculty In Academic Medicine: A Mixed Method Study, Kimberly Bloom-Feshbach, Vasilia Vasiliou, Lance D. Laird, Janet T. Civian, Linda H. Pololi
School of Business
Introduction: This mixed-method study sought to elucidate the impact of COVID-19 on the professional environments and career trajectories of midcareer research faculty in U.S. medical schools.
Methods: Participants were 40 midcareer medical school faculty enrolled in the Brandeis University C-Change Mentoring and Leadership Institute, a group peer mentoring career development course being tested in a National Institutes of Health-funded randomized controlled trial.
Results: We observed a gender disparity in both the quantitative and qualitative data, with women faculty describing COVID-19 more negatively impacting their career trajectory. This negative impact was independent of having children in the home. Participants largely reported …

The Differential Expands: Ataxia From Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration, Dominic Thomas, Md, Amy Dechet
Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.
Introduction: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration is a rare cause of cerebellar ataxia with a poor prognosis for neurologic recovery. The management of symptoms is dependent primarily upon timely diag nosis and treatment of the underlying neoplasm. Herein, we present the diagnostic and treatment course of a patient with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Case: A 72-year-old woman with a past medical history of left mastectomy for high grade ER/PR negative Her2 positive invasive ductal carcinoma presented with progressively worsening dysarthria and ataxia over two months. A metabolic work up by her primary care physician was unrevealing. Breast MRI did not show recurrence of …

Hayek And Tawney: A Forgotten Conversation On Economics And Christian Ethics, Roger J. Newell
Hayek And Tawney: A Forgotten Conversation On Economics And Christian Ethics, Roger J. Newell
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The dramatic British election of 1945 and an unlikely best-seller on economic philosophy provides the setting for a respectful conversation, rather than an acrimonious debate, between two long-time colleagues of the London School of Economics, the economic theorist F.A. Hayek and the economic historian R.H. Tawney. Their dialogue highlights divergent approaches to key moral issues embedded in economic thought, including the nature of freedom, the role of the state, and the reasons for poverty. The article examines the way in which Christianity underpins Tawney's approach to these questions and how, for Hayek, a network of secular beliefs performs a parallel …

“Digital Integrity”: Defending The Judicial Integrity In The Digital Age, Guy Alon, Doron Menashe, Guy Itzhak Sender
Touro Law Review
Recent revelations have shown that the protection of the Fourth Amendment in the digital age is inadequate. Despite well-known exclusionary rules regarding evidence obtained by illegal search and seizure, current trends in the digital age and the law of evidence resulted in courts that tend to include such evidence, and by doing so, create significant risk of both substantive and procedural errors and hence increase the potential for wrongful convictions. To address the matter and try to empower and modernize the protection given by the Fourth Amendment, this article suggests performing a revolution in the law of evidence in the …
Locking Up Potential: Why Children Need Access To Special Education Services In Solitary, Lauren Edwards
Locking Up Potential: Why Children Need Access To Special Education Services In Solitary, Lauren Edwards
Touro Law Review
Correctional facilities across the country are consistently failing to provide adequate special education to disabled children who are placed in solitary confinement due to inadequate funding, untrained staff, and lack of consensus on how to implement a program. This Note compares the special education services that disabled children are entitled to under the Free Appropriate Public Education (“FAPE”) statute with the education they receive during incarceration. This Note also discusses suggestions for implementing meaningful special education when a child is isolated. When disabled children are placed in solitary confinement and deprived of education tailored to their specific needs and abilities, …
Variable Standards: How Many Uninjured Class Members Are Acceptable?, Tom Flesher
Variable Standards: How Many Uninjured Class Members Are Acceptable?, Tom Flesher
Touro Law Review
Purchasers of canned tuna filed a class action against tuna producers after a price-fixing scheme raised prices above competitive levels. To be certified, a class must include only members who have suffered an injury, in this case by paying a higher price than they would have in the absence of price-fixing, but it was difficult to identify which plaintiffs were uninjured and should be excluded. Dueling statistical models failed to resolve this uncertainty, with one model suggesting up to one in every three class members was not injured at all. The Ninth Circuit nonetheless allowed this class to be certified, …
Opioid Settlements And Profitable Public Nuisances, Clayton J. Masterman
Opioid Settlements And Profitable Public Nuisances, Clayton J. Masterman
Touro Law Review
The global settlements between state and local governments and opioid manufacturers, distributors, and retailers require opioid defendants to transform their businesses and pay more than $40 billion to abate the ongoing opioid epidemic. The $40 billion in abatement funds is a substantial pool of money that is likely to help states combat opioid use and abuse. Large as the payments are, however, they are significantly smaller than the profits that the opioid defendants made over the course of the epidemic or the total harm that they caused. This Article argues that the global opioid settlements incentivize future defendants to create …
On Guido Calabresi, Roger K. Newman
On Guido Calabresi, Roger K. Newman
Touro Law Review
Few individuals have had as long and as influential a career in law as Guido Calabresi. Cofounder of the field of law and economics, teacher, dean, and judge, he has inspired (and infuriated) multitudes. On the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, where he has served for thirty years (while continuing to teach until recently), his creativity and doctrinal innovations continue apace. He has urged the academy, legislature, and bench alike to engage in continuing conversation to improve the law and its effect upon those to whom it acts. One of these areas is certification—the practice of …
Younger And Older Abstention, Fred O. Smith Jr.
Younger And Older Abstention, Fred O. Smith Jr.
Michigan Law Review
When victims of systemic rights violations in state criminal proceedings seek federal court relief, governmental defendants often ask federal courts to abstain for reasons of federalism. These arguments frequently disregard the Supreme Court’s emphasis that abstention is a narrow exception to federal courts’ duty to exercise jurisdiction. Lower federal courts are increasingly employing a form of “free-floating federalism,” diverging from the Supreme Court’s careful balance between comity and individual rights. This has led to lower courts’ significant expansion of criminal abstention doctrine, leaving severe irreparable harm unaddressed in an increasingly broad range of settings, such as pretrial detention and child …
Spending Clause Standing, Edward Webre Plaut
Spending Clause Standing, Edward Webre Plaut
Michigan Law Review
The Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan Act allotted almost $220 billion to state, local, and tribal governments to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This money, the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, gave recipients wide spending discretion to address their struggling economies. But the legislation had one key limitation: Recipients could not use the money to “directly or indirectly” cut their taxes. If a recipient violated this “Offset Provision,” the Department of the Treasury might recoup the funds.
Nearly two-dozen states alleged that the Offset Provision was unduly coercive and ambiguous, violating the Spending Clause. However, with no threatened …
Standalone Municipal Liability, Avery Figo Comar
Standalone Municipal Liability, Avery Figo Comar
Michigan Law Review
Under Monell v. Department of Social Services, municipalities may not be held liable for constitutional violations attributable to an errant employee’s actions. Instead, Monell dictates that municipal liability is appropriate only when the municipality itself is “the moving force” behind the constitutional violation. The Fourth and Fifth Circuits, based on a flawed reading of the Supreme Court case City of Los Angeles v. Heller, adopt an inapposite approach to the relationship between municipal and individual liability. Although every other circuit allows municipal claims to proceed absent any individual claim arising from the same underlying facts, the Fourth and …
After Courts: Democratizing Statutory Law, Ryan D. Doerfler, Samuel Moyn
After Courts: Democratizing Statutory Law, Ryan D. Doerfler, Samuel Moyn
Michigan Law Review
In Federalist No. 78, Alexander Hamilton argued for locating interpretive authority over law separately from those institutions tasked with formulating it. Hamilton’s vision, never accurate as a description of American practice, has not been credible for a long time. To the extent enormous power is still allocated to judges, our legal institutions have been out of step with our legal theory, which has long regarded them as political actors and policymakers. More practically, every term it is clearer and clearer that the role of the Supreme Court in statutory cases (including checking administrative rulemaking and other processes) is, if anything, …
Educating Caregivers And Parents On Infant Safe Sleep Guidelines In A Rural Community, Melody Hill
Educating Caregivers And Parents On Infant Safe Sleep Guidelines In A Rural Community, Melody Hill
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains a leading cause of infant mortality, highlighting the need for effective, safe sleep education for caregivers and parents. Key safe sleep guidelines have been shown to reduce SIDS risk by placing infants on their backs to sleep, using firm mattresses, and avoiding soft bedding. However, misconceptions about safe sleep practices persist, making education for caregivers and parents essential. The desired outcome of this project was to significantly enhance the knowledge and behaviors related to infant sleep practices, ensuring that caregivers and parents understand and follow safe sleep guidelines. This project aimed to evaluate the …

The Path To Zero Clabsis: The Benefits Of Central Line Care Teams, Supplemental Checklist, Increased Education And Utilizing Clabsi Bundles, Lauren A. Bondurant
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) result in a plethora of deaths each year and cost the U.S. healthcare system billions of dollars (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). CLABSIs have been a type of bloodstream infection that has affected a plethora of individuals for years and one that does not discriminate patient type. Many articles were reviewed, but they all inferred that CLABSIs bundles, supplemental checklists, and central line care teams all showed the most significant data and resulted in the most decreased CLABSI rates. Upon assessment of the project unit, it was noted that the issue that most impacted …

Sleep Promotion In Neonatal Intensive Care Units, Maelyn G. Cranford
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Sleep is a fundamental requirement for the human body to achieve and sustain overall health and well-being. In Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), sleep is a vital step in an infant’s routine to allow for proper neurodevelopment and growth. Parents of infants in the NICU may be unaware of the critical role sleep plays in their child’s health. Without realizing it, they can unintentionally disrupt their infant’s sleep by speaking loudly, using bright lights, or playing loud sounds from their phone. This DNP project was created to increase NICU parent education on the importance of sleep promotion and involve them …

Providing Safe Care For Mental Health Patients Through Ongoing Education Of Non-Psychiatric Nurses And Staff, Amy Kilpatrick
Providing Safe Care For Mental Health Patients Through Ongoing Education Of Non-Psychiatric Nurses And Staff, Amy Kilpatrick
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nurses care for many individuals with medical conditions, but also those who suffer from mental illness and are in an acute mental health crisis. Nonpsychiatric nurses often lack adequate knowledge and training while caring for individuals with mental health disorders and those in acute crisis, which can be a barrier to providing safe, effective care for this vulnerable population. When individuals are in crisis and present to the emergency departments, their first contact is with emergency room nurses who may lack the necessary skills to conduct a thorough assessment when evaluating for mental health disorders, including the presence of suicidal …
