The Samsung Succession And Art Donations: The Necessity Of Tax Incentives In Preserving And Expanding The Cultural Heritage Of South Korea, Sophia Do
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Until recently, South Korea’s laws did not allow the donation of art as a form of inheritance tax payment. In fact, there has been a general lack of tax benefits on art donations in the country. Experts often attribute this deficiency to two reasons: the lack of a national and widespread art appraisal system and the traditional view that such tax laws benefit only the rich. The tide, however, turned in 2020. Two national events provided the impetus for tax law reform that allows the donation of art as a form of inheritance tax payment: the Samsung succession and the …

Pharmacoepidemiology Of Oxycodone In The Usa: An Observational Study Of Arcos, Medicaid, And Medicare Drug Databases, Jay P. Solgama, Apoorva Pradhan, Kenneth L. Mccall, Brian J. Piper
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
The US continues to battle an opioid crisis, substantially influenced by prescription opioids, with nearly 80 000 opioid-related deaths in 2023. This study aims to characterize oxycodone's distribution in the United States (US) from 2000 to 2023 using three data sources. Morphine Milligram Equivalents (MME) of oxycodone were calculated from the Drug Enforcement Administration annual summary reports from the Automation of Reports and Consolidated Orders System (ARCOS); the number of units and prescriptions of oxycodone per enrollee were calculated using the Medicaid State Drug Utilization Data (M-SDUD); and the number of claims and 30-day fills per enrollee and per beneficiary …
These Boots Were Made For Copyrighting: A Comparative Analysis Of Copyright Protection For The Shoe Industry In The European Union And United States And How It Is Impacting The “Dupe” Market, Annalee Gunderson
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
Copyright protection for fashion designs has always been slim, especially when it comes to shoes. Times seem to be changing as calls for increased protection in the industry have generated a new focus on changing the nature of copyright laws to better protect designs and designers. Two of the world’s fashion meccas, the United States and European Union, have their own different approaches to this issue. In the last decade, each territory’s most influential court, the United States Supreme Court in Star Athletica v. Varsity Brands and the Court of Justice in the European Union in Cofemel v. G–Star Raw, …

Scientists provide important information to the public. Whether that information influences decision-making depends on trust. In the USA, gaps in trust in scientists have been stable for 50 years: women, Black people, rural residents, religious people, less educated people and people with lower economic status express less trust than their counterparts (who are more represented among scientists). Here the authors probe the factors that influence trust. They find that members of the less trusting groups exhibit greater trust in scientists who share their characteristics (for example, women trust women scientists more than men scientists). They view such scientists as having …

In this study, we developed multifunctional nanoparticles based on polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers functionalized with caffeic acid (CA) and poly (ethylene glycol) maleimide (PEGM) for the topical delivery of hydrophobic antiglaucoma drugs brimonidine (BM) and betaxolol (BX). The PAMAM-CA and PAMAM-CA-PEGM conjugates exhibited antioxidant and iron-chelating activities in a dose-dependent manner. BM- and BX-loaded dendrimer nanoparticles produced using a multi-inlet vortex mixer showed uniform spherical morphology (∼80 nm by TEM) and hydrated sizes of ∼135-144 nm by DLS. Both nano formulations demonstrated high cytocompatibility with human corneal epithelial cells and were nonirritant in the HET-CAM assay, with PEGM further improving cytocompatibility. …
An Educational Approach To Mitigating Stormwater Debris Pollution In The Great Lakes Basin, Autumn Potts
An Educational Approach To Mitigating Stormwater Debris Pollution In The Great Lakes Basin, Autumn Potts
Theses
Accumulation of anthropogenic debris (AD) in the environment, especially plastic, is a pervasive issue that impacts human communities and ecosystems worldwide. Since AD pollution at every scale stems from human activities, its mitigation is contingent on analyzing and modifying the scale-dependent drivers of human behavior surrounding this issue. Although the underlying mechanisms driving litter input and accumulation are not well understood, these patterns suggest a need for hyperlocal solutions. Because environmental education (EE) fosters a significant influence on environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, it can play an important role in the mitigation of debris input and littering behavior. One method …

The Impact Of Parking Services On Mental Health At Bowling Green State University, Callie Oyster
The Impact Of Parking Services On Mental Health At Bowling Green State University, Callie Oyster
Honors Projects
The current research investigates the effects of parking on daily stress and emotional stability and perceptions of equity at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). It draws from the perspective of students, faculty, and staff via a quantitative survey of over 500 respondents that assessed parking behaviors, mental health indicators, and institutional trust. The results indicate that unpredictability, rather than simply lack of space, is the largest source of stress related to parking. Commuter and resident students reported arriving at least 20-30 minutes earlier than expected. Faculty, staff, and students reported feelings of anticipatory anxiety about driving to BGSU, with emotional …

Prosodic Comparisons Between Speech And Music For Different Emotions, Reagan Brothers
Honors Projects
This study compares the prosodic acoustic characteristics between different emotional expressions in speech and clarinet playing and evaluates the similarities in prosody between these two domains. The prosodic features analyzed include pitch, loudness, and duration, which are the psychoacoustic terms referring to fundamental frequency [fo], intensity, and rate of time. The American folksong “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” was both spoken and performed with three emotions: neutral, sad, and happy. The first comparison was how each prosodic characteristic compared across the three different emotions within each domain, and then prosody was compared across the two domains …
The Timing Of Pubertal Onset Affects Adults Anxiety Behavior In A Sex-Specific Manner, Evan Raubenolt
The Timing Of Pubertal Onset Affects Adults Anxiety Behavior In A Sex-Specific Manner, Evan Raubenolt
Honors Projects
This study aims to look at the relationship between the timing of pubertal onset and its long-term effects on adult anxiety behavior in rats. Though the topic of pubertal onset has been frequently discussed in developmental research, its exact effects have been inconsistent. Human models have shown that early and late maturing males are associated with a notable increase in adult anxiety behavior, while in rat models, similar sex-specific effects regarding anxiety have been demonstrated, though those studies focus on a causal relationship between exposure to stress and age of pubertal onset. This study first aims to examine that relationship …

Ideology, Issue Consistency, & Rationality In Political Preferences Among Bgsu Students, Cassidy Kroggel
Honors Projects
Affective polarization — negative feelings toward the opposing political party — is increasing in the United States. As partisanship becomes weaponized, an individual’s ideological consistency becomes an important determiner for their negative feelings toward other individuals with different beliefs. This concern reaches beyond mere disagreement, and has serious implications for the future of our democratic principles: open dialogue, compromise, and policy making. Rationality and the ability to change one’s mind seems to be at the forefront of this issue, acting as a bottom-up driver for policy preference formation. This research analyzes the connection between ideological consistency, rationality, and affective polarization …

Background and Purpose: The lack of racial diversity in nursing academia has the potential to affect efforts to recruit and retain diverse nursing students and diversify the nursing workforce, which research demonstrates helps achieve health equity (Montgomery et al., 2021). Few nurses from underrepresented racial groups with advanced degrees seek careers in the academy. Data from American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2024) indicate that 22% of full-time nursing school faculty self-identify as racial minorities. Promotion and tenure (P/T) is often perceived as a sign of success in the academy. Unfortunately, it is often difficult for minority faculty, as …

Water quality has traditionally been measured via in situ sensors and satellites. The latter has limited applicability for smaller inland water bodies, while the former requires significant logistics, labor, and expense for routine sampling, and reactive/spurious sampling is often not feasible as a result (e.g., sampling pre-/post-storm). Consequently, small uncrewed aircraft system-based (sUAS-based) sampling has emerged as a potential solution to bridge these sampling gaps and challenges. But sampling from an sUAS is complicated by the need to pump water from depth, rather than suspending a sensor from the sUAS, due to concern over sampling sUAS-impacted waters. Here, we measure …
