Evaluating Fall Prevention Outcomes: Fall Rates, Staff Fall Knowledge, And Perceptions On Safety Culture, Priscilla Greco
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The practice problem addressed in this project was the elevated fall rates on a 46-bed medical–surgical unit with a reported sentinel fall event, prompting the need to evaluate the current fall prevention program.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In nursing staff on a medical–surgical unit (P), how does the implementation of an evidence-based fall prevention program evaluation using AHRQ tools (I), compared with no formal program evaluation (C), influence staff knowledge, perceptions of safety culture, and fall rates (O) over 8-weeks (T)?
Evidence: Evidence supporting this project emphasized that structured staff education, strong communication, …

Social Media Use And Its Association With Eating-Related Attitudes And Behaviors In Rural University Students, Erin S. Clark
Social Media Use And Its Association With Eating-Related Attitudes And Behaviors In Rural University Students, Erin S. Clark
Honors College Theses
Context: Eating disorders (EDs) are psychiatric illnesses wherein atypical patterns of eating induce harmful physical and psychosocial consequences. ED rates have increased globally in recent years, jumping from an estimated 3.5% to 7.8% between 2006 and 2018. ED onset typically occurs in adolescence and early adulthood and results from complex interactions between biological, psychological, and social factors. One such social factor is social media (SM) usage.
Research Design: The present quantitative study examines how measures of SM use (including use intensity, activity, personal perceptions of SM, and initial age of introduction to SM) relate to ED risk among rural university …
Enhancing Teamwork, Communication, And Collaboration Through Multidisciplinary Simulation Training, Jana Tenbrink
Enhancing Teamwork, Communication, And Collaboration Through Multidisciplinary Simulation Training, Jana Tenbrink
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Effective communication, teamwork, and collaboration between nurses and physicians are critical components of safe and efficient patient care, particularly in high-acuity settings, where quick decision-making and coordinated actions are essential, breakdowns in teamwork can lead to errors, adverse patient outcomes, and increased stress among healthcare providers (Newman et al., 2022). Multidisciplinary simulation training is emerging as a promising intervention to enhance team dynamics, particularly between nurses and providers, in high-pressure environments (Kiessling et al., 2022). This quasi-experimental pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary simulation training in acute care settings and its impact on teamwork, communication, and collaboration …

How “Cooling Off” Periods Endanger The Vulnerable: A 50-State Study Of Mandatory Separation Periods In No-Fault Divorce, Melody Mostow
How “Cooling Off” Periods Endanger The Vulnerable: A 50-State Study Of Mandatory Separation Periods In No-Fault Divorce, Melody Mostow
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Mandatory separation periods in no-fault divorce neither advance their stated policy goals nor comport with contemporary understandings of marital dynamics, domestic abuse, or child welfare. Although mandatory separation periods are held out as tools to promote reconciliation and deter impulsive divorces, such rationales lack empirical support. Because family law in the United States is determined at the state level, this Article examines state laws that require couples to live apart in varying restrictive capacities before obtaining a no-fault divorce. To that end, this Article presents the first comprehensive 50-state study of such requirements. Research demonstrates that these laws do not …

Tanzanian Economic Review
Africa faces deep food insecurity with over 300 million undernourished people driven by, low agricultural productivity, and climate shocks. To enhance food production and sustainable development, there is potential seen in genetically modified (GM) crops. To explore the potential of GM crops, this paper examines their production, adoption, economic and environmental impacts, adoption barriers, and policy implications in Africa and globally. This is done using a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed literature, reports, and policy documents (2014–2024) sourced from different databases complemented by stakeholder consultations. The findings show that GM has expanded considerably worldwide driven by high productivity, reduced pesticide …

Addressing Nursing Shortages In Rural Hospitals: Strategies For Recruitment And Retention, Harrison Efosa Omoruyi
Addressing Nursing Shortages In Rural Hospitals: Strategies For Recruitment And Retention, Harrison Efosa Omoruyi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract The shortage of nursing staff in rural hospitals has created a critical workforce challenge in the United States, negatively affecting patient care, organizational performance, and community health. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify evidence-based strategies to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses in rural hospital settings. A search of literature published between 2021 and 2025 yielded 20 high-quality and good-quality studies that addressed the problem. Guided by Herzberg’s two-factor theory, thematic analysis revealed six overarching themes: (a) strategic improvements, (b) system efficiency and effectiveness, (c) service availability, (d) care models, (e) organizational support, and (f) …

Bridging The Rural Justice Gap: A Scalable Solution Rooted In Clinical Legal Education, Michelle Paxton
Bridging The Rural Justice Gap: A Scalable Solution Rooted In Clinical Legal Education, Michelle Paxton
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
The rural justice gap significantly impacts child welfare legal representation, exacerbating the challenges families face when navigating juvenile courts in rural America. Attorneys in these communities frequently encounter geographic isolation, limited access to specialized training, professional burnout, and inadequate resources, all of which hinder effective advocacy for vulnerable children and families.
This article argues that clinical legal education, when paired with structured post-graduate training and multidisciplinary consultation, offers a replicable model for addressing the rural attorney shortages in juvenile court advocacy. The Nebraska Children’s Justice and Legal Advocacy Center (NCJC) illustrates how this model can be designed and scaled to …

Patient Preferences When Selecting Their Total Joint Arthroplasty Surgeon: A Multicenter Survey Study, Jake Laverdiere, Danielle Lonati, Swaroopa Vaidya, Gregory Panza, Antonia Chen, Mary Morcos, Yale Fillingham, Jessica Leipman, Molly Hartzler, Jenna Bernstein
Rothman Institute Papers
BACKGROUND: Surgeon selection can influence patient satisfaction, outcomes, and access in total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Awareness of patient preferences enables practices to enhance trust, optimize communication, and improve adherence. While referrals and word-of-mouth recommendations often outweigh online marketing, prospective multicenter research exploring how patients choose their TJA surgeon is limited. The aim of this study was to identify key decision-making factors and how they vary by demographics.
METHODS: This prospective, multicenter cross-sectional survey study included patients undergoing elective total joint arthroplasty at 4 high-volume institutions from January 2024 to 2025. Participants completed a survey on surgeon selection, including how they …

Predicting, Culturing, And Characterizing Beneficial And Detrimental Strains Associated With Plant Phenotypes., Anastasiia Onyshchenko
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Modern agriculture’s reliance on chemical fertilizers has greatly increased crop yields but has also contributed to soil degradation, environmental pollution, and unsustainable resource use. Plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria offer a sustainable alternative, enhancing plant growth through mechanisms such as nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, and phytohormone modulation, while also protecting plants against pathogens and abiotic stresses. However, soil microbial communities are highly diverse and structurally complex, making the isolation of individual beneficial strains challenging. Traditional approaches rely on selective media and labor-intensive phenotypic screening, which often capture only a small fraction of soil diversity. To overcome these limitations, we combined …

Center for Social Development Research
For families trying to enroll in public programs to meet essential needs like food and health care, speed and timeliness can be critical. But people face numerous barriers in enrolling in these programs and in maintaining eligibility once enrolled. This research brief uses a new measure of staff workloads in public benefit agencies for every U.S. state and examines the link between these workloads and the experience of administrative burdens among low-wage workers. The analyses draw upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility Survey.
Implicit Weight Bias Among Men In Allied Health Career Fields, Jessica Jensen
Implicit Weight Bias Among Men In Allied Health Career Fields, Jessica Jensen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This quantitative study observed if there was a difference in the presence of implicit weight bias in men who work in allied health fields versus men not in allied health fields. Age and ethnicity (Hispanic/Non-Hispanic) were also observed in these groups as moderating factors to see if they also had differences in the effects between groups. The purpose of this study was to utilize an electronic weight-implicit association test (W-IAT) to identify any significant differences in the presence of weight bias between the two groups. Implicit weight bias in this population is problematic in that implicit bias, particularly implicit weight …

Evaluation Of A Food Distribution Center, Antonia Danielle Bates-Ford, Darlene Showalter
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Food insecurity in the United States is experienced by one in seven American households. In 2023, the food insecurity rate for the U.S. was 13.5%, which was 6% higher than the prior year. As a result of these rising numbers, emphasis has been placed on food insecurity as a social determinant of health that, on its own, serves as a contributing factor and predictor of patient outcomes. The food distribution center is crucial in alleviating food insecurity in Madison County. This program evaluation assesses the efficacy and operational efficiency of the center, providing insights for strategic enhancements and informed policy …

Moral Injury In Helping Professions Psychoeducation Group, Website, & Outreach Campaign, Garrett Schwanke, Liz Greene, Natalie Brown
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Abstract Text: Moral injury is a chronic emotional and psychological syndrome from actions or experiences that transgress deeply held moral beliefs (Rosen et al., 2022). Potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) are abundant in the helping professions (e.g., teaching, healthcare, and social work) and include dilemmas such as difficult decisions to ration or withdraw medical care and harmful clinical and administrative practices.
Symptoms of moral injury include guilt, shame, anger, disgust, and moderate to severe social and occupational impairment (Rosen et al., 2022). This syndrome imparts a high risk for depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Moral injury erodes care …

Background/Objectives: Canadian Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner (APP) roles have existed for over 25 years in pediatric rheumatology. The APP can manage many common pediatric rheumatic conditions most often in Shared-Care Models (SCMs) with pediatric rheumatologists (PRs). The quality of care children receive in an APP SCM compared to traditional care is unknown. The Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network (PR-COIN) tracks quality measures as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) care. This study aimed to analyze the frequency of KPIs documented in a pediatric rheumatology APP SCM from a single center and compare to PR-COIN's performance …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, immunologically driven disorder with a high mortality rate. It is typically diagnosed on the basis of clinical and laboratory criteria. We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with multiple previous hospitalizations for fever of unknown origin and fatigue. Her workup ultimately led to a diagnosis of HLH. We discuss the presentation, diagnostic criteria, and clinical treatment of secondary HLH to guide workup and management for future patients affected by this rare disease.

It’S Still Happening: Conversion Therapy Laws Leaving College Students And More At Risk, Emma L. Mcconnell
Honors Theses
Conversion Therapy is still legal for adults across the United States, and for minors in many states. The laws and case law facilitating or preventing this discredited practice hang in the balance of whichever direction the Federal political climate moves at any given times. Even in states where Conversion Therapy is celebrated as "banned", populations of Americans that include the uniquely vulnerable students at religious universities are still subjected to it. This exploration and policy proposal solution prompts the total ban of Conversion Therapy and explains how a true legislative movement to that aim could begin.

Reading Between The Lines: The Influence Of Financial News On Investor Decision-Making, Kalia Noble
Honors College Theses
This thesis investigates how financial media narratives shape investor sentiment and short-term market behavior. Drawing on behavioral finance and narrative economics, it examines whether the framing and tone of market news correlate with intraday volatility in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average. By pairing quantitative price data with contemporaneous headlines from major outlets such as Bloomberg, Yahoo! Finance, and CNBC, the study shows that emotionally charged or speculative narratives are closely associated with sharp market swings, even when fundamentals remain unchanged. These findings highlight the influence of media framing on investor decision-making and underscore the importance of financial …
