[Objective] To develop an active edible film based on soy protein isolate (SPI), whey protein concentrate (WPC ), and Arctium lappa L.polysaccharide (ALP ) by using the casting method. [Methods] This study characterizes the surface morphology, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EAB ), water solubility (WS), moisture content (MC), water vapor permeability (WVP ), and light transmittance of the composite film.It also systematically investigates the impact of different ALP proportions on film properties. The optimal ratio for the film is identified, and its performance in Morchella preservation is evaluated. [Results] When the mass ratio of SPI/WPC to ALP is 1.0∶0.2, …

From Digital Distress To Wellness: Counseling Implications Of Social Media Use In Adolescents And Emerging Adults, Anna K. Owens, Arantxa Mascarenas
Faculty Articles
The pervasive use of social media among secondary and post-secondary students has raised significant concern regarding its impact on mental health and academic success. Excessive social media use (SMU) has been linked to anxiety, depression, social comparison, body image concerns, disrupted sleep, and diminished academic focus. These risks highlight the urgent need for counselors to integrate social media considerations into both clinical and educational practice. This article reviews evidence-based interventions that address the psychological and emotional consequences of SMU, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to challenge distorted beliefs, mindfulness strategies to improve emotional regulation, digital detox programs to recalibrate online …

Reducing Foodborne Bacteria Public Health Burden By Novel Compounds And Pressure-Based Technologies, Junice Alannah Sibley
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Food safety strategies are being developed in the hopes of combating foodborne pathogens and their risks. Previous techniques and technologies are struggling to meet the needs of the public, leading to the demand for new, innovative methods. Mild high-pressure processing (HPP) of 350 MPa was used in a synergetic combination with mild heat of 60°C and the antimicrobial carvacrol for the decontamination of non-typhoidal Salmonella serovars that resulted in a >5 log CFU/mL reduction. Additionally, a secondary study was conducted comparing a single Salmonella Tennessee strain with a 4-strain Salmonella cocktail to examine sensitivity to pressure-based treatments resulting in a …

A Review Of Cutaneous Viral Infections And Their Potential Role In Neurologic Diseases, Valeria Duque-Clavijo, Hung Q Doan, Stephen K Tyring
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Cutaneous viral infections, defined as viral pathogens that either primarily affect the skin (e.g., herpesviruses, enteroviruses) or frequently produce dermatologic manifestations despite systemic tropism (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2), can trigger systemic inflammatory and neurotropic responses that extend their impact to the nervous system. A growing body of evidence suggests that viruses with dermatologic manifestations may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of neurologic disorders.
Summary: Although individual viruses have been studied in isolation, the skin-brain axis in viral infections remains incompletely characterized. This review synthesizes existing knowledge and highlights gaps in understanding the mechanisms linking cutaneous viral infections to …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) damages pathways throughout the brain and is a significant global health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where the incidence is high and long-term deficits are prevalent. This study explores the utility of central auditory processing (CAP) testing as a marker of previous TBI. Seventy individuals with a history of moderate to severe TBI (msTBI) were matched by age and sex to 46 healthy controls in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Participants underwent comprehensive behavioral CAP testing, including tests of speech-in-noise ability, temporal resolution, and dichotic listening. Multivariate logistic regression showed the Triple Digit Test (TDT) …

Exploring The Experiences Of White Passing And White-Assumed Latine College Students, Emanuel Magaña
Dissertations and Theses
Between 2009 and 2019 Latine college enrollment has increased, yet retention and graduation rates lag those of their white peers. While barriers for Latine students are well-documented, the influence of colorism, particularly among lighter-skinned or white passing students, remains understudied. This study utilized a qualitative case-study approach grounded in CRT and LatCrit and based on a Street Race Praxis framework. This study explored the experiences of twelve white passing and/or white-assumed Latine students at an emerging HSI in the Pacific Northwest. Using Testimonio informed approach and Counterstory, I drew from interviews, pláticas, site observations, and document analysis to create four …

Background: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) counts among the most frequent types of malignant salivary gland neoplasms. Brandwein system classified MEC into low, intermediate and high grade as per histological pattern, but this classification lacks the correlation with the genetic basis such as MicroRNA profile. This study aims to assess the expression level of MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) and MicroRNA-22 (miR-22) in different grades of MEC. Material And Methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded blocks of MEC were obtained from Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University and General Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University within the period of (2014-2023). Reel Me In: An Analysis Of Self-Presentation On Linkedin And Instagram, Katie Vanhouten
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study is to examine how Communication and Digital Studies (CDS) seniors tailor how they self-present on social media on a social app compared to a professional one. As seniors are transitioning from student life to professional life, it is significant to understand how that meaningful shift influences how they present themselves online. This study employs a qualitative content analysis of Instagram and LinkedIn profiles, including two posts from each platform, belonging to four CDS seniors at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The findings suggest three themes in self-presentation, which are personality, communication style, …

The Impact Of High-Fidelity Simulation On Graduate Nursing Students’ Knowledge And Confidence In Septic Shock Management, Shaden Mustafa
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) Doctorate of Nursing (DNP) project was to create and evaluate the impact of high-fidelity simulation-based training (SBT) on graduate nursing students’ knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating septic shock. Outcomes were measured with pre- and post-simulation tests featuring competency questions and Likert-scale confidence ratings.
Accordingly, the two research questions guiding this project were: (1) How effective is high-fidelity simulation training in improving students’ knowledge and competence in managing septic shock? (2) How effective is high-fidelity simulation training in enhancing students’ confidence when caring for patients with septic shock?
Septic shock was selected …

Investigating The Effect Of Kcl Stress In Raphanus Sativus, Mason P. Oelke
ATU Honors Projects
Potassium is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, yet excessive potassium fertilization can induce salt stress with detrimental consequences for crop productivity and nutritional quality. Despite its agricultural relevance, potassium chloride induced stress remains significantly understudied compared to classical sodium-based salinity. This thesis investigates the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of Raphanus sativus to KCl stress using an integrated approach that combines germination assays, mineral profiling, and gene expression analysis.
Radish seeds were exposed to increasing KCl concentrations (0–400 mM) with or without melatonin, TEA, or EDTA. Germination percentage, fresh and dry biomass, and early seedling vigor were …
