A Trigger For The Autonomous Decommissioning Of Smart Devices, Ravindra Mangar, Jared Chandler, Jingyu Qian, Carl A. Gunter, Timothy J. Pierson, David Kotz
Dartmouth Scholarship
Smart devices are ubiquitous in modern environments, yet their decommissioning phase remains poorly studied and often overlooked in system design. We define secure decommissioning as the process by which a smart device securely disconnects from its environment and makes sensitive data inaccessible. If not decommissioned, devices may retain sensitive information – such as security credentials or user-behavior data that could be recovered by an adversary. Unfortunately, some users may forget to decommission a device when they dispose or sell it, and cannot decommission a device that is lost or stolen. This paper investigates a trigger mechanism for individual wireless smart …

Effects Of Integrated Biological And Chemical Fertilization On Pecco And Banji Shoot Development In Tea Plants, Intan Ratna Dewi Anjarsari, Muhammad Raihan Abdillah Farros, Santi Rosniawaty
Jurnal Kultivasi
Tea productivity and quality are largely determined by shoot structure, particularly the balance between pecco shoots (tender buds and young leaves) and banji shoots (older, less productive shoots). Conventional reliance on inorganic fertilizers often enhances overall growth but does not necessarily improve shoot structure, while biofertilizers alone provide limited nutrient availability. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of combining microbial-based liquid biofertilizers with inorganic fertilizers on the structure of tea shoots. The experiment was carried out on seed-derived tea plants using a randomized block design with several fertilization treatments, including sole biofertilizer, sole inorganic fertilizer, and their combinations. The …

While it is known that chronic unpredictable stress and negative events adversely affect neurobiological outcomes, much less is known regarding the neurobiological impact of positive emotions such as chronic anticipation of appetitive events. From a translational perspective, an enhanced understanding of the impact of extended exposure to positive emotions may provide novel insights into effective non-pharmacological, behavior-based approaches to enhance mental resilience. Here, we investigate a novel rodent model of chronic Unpredictable Positive Event Response (UPER) training in male and female Long Evans rats to examine behavioral, neural, and endocrine effects of enhanced anticipation of positive events. Rats were exposed …

Michigan Tech Publications
Background
Analyses of a bipartite Genotype and Phenotype Network (GPN), linking the genetic variants and phenotypes based on statistical associations, provide an integrative approach to elucidate the complexities of genetic relationships across diseases and identify pleiotropic loci. In this study, we assess contributions to constructing a well-defined GPN with a clear representation of genetic associations by comparing the network properties with a random network, including connectivity, centrality, and community structure. Then, we extend our discussion to include two applications of bipartite GPN in disease heritability enrichment analysis and phenome-wide association studies (PheWAS).
Results
We construct network topology annotations of genetic …
Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter Regulates Itam-Dependent Platelet Activation, Jehiel Abigail Ajanel Gomez
Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter Regulates Itam-Dependent Platelet Activation, Jehiel Abigail Ajanel Gomez
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Thromboembolic conditions are the leading cause of disability and death in the United States. Platelets play an important role in the pathophysiology of thrombus formation by aiding in the formation and stabilization of the clot. Central to platelet activation is cytoplasmic calcium, which increases after platelet activation through ITAM (Immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif) or GPCR (G-protein-coupled receptor) receptors. Platelet mitochondria rely on cytoplasmic calcium for mitochondrial calcium influx, which is critical for ATP formation and regulation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. In other cells, mitochondrial calcium entry is regulated by the multimeric protein complex, mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU). Deletion of …
When Back To Work Orders Fail: Lessons From Air Canada For U.S. Labor Policy, David Schwartz
When Back To Work Orders Fail: Lessons From Air Canada For U.S. Labor Policy, David Schwartz
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) Blog
In August 2025, 99.7% of Air Canada flight attendants agreed to strike, triggering what quickly became one of the most visible labor disputes in North America. Within hours, the government declared the strike unlawful and issued a back‑to‑work order. On paper, this should have ended the disruption. In practice, it did not. Thousands of flight attendants, organized under the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), defied the order and continued protesting. CUPE believed the process was unfair, claiming the airline refused to bargain fairly knowing the government would intervene to preserve operations. The strike paralyzed operations at Canada’s largest airline …

The Cost Of Conviction: A Constructivist Analysis Of U.S. Interventions In Guatemala, 1954-1999, Savannah L. Sinor
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The U.S. continuously intervened in Guatemalan domestic politics from 1954 to 1999 without achieving its stated goals of stability, democratization, or development. Although the threat of communism offered an initial justification for U.S. involvement, traditional geopolitical explanations failed to adequately account for the persistence of intervention.
Through the lens of constructivism, this research examines these interventions, with special attention paid to political, economic, and humanitarian factors. It focuses on the American identity as democratic, capitalist, and later, a protector of human rights, and how the need to protect and exhibit that identity motivated the U.S. to intervene. These identities and …

Clinical Evaluation Of Ozone Gel Versus Hyaluronic Acid Gel On Palatal Wound Following Free Gingival Graft Harvesting: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Hisham Tarek, Nesma Shemais, Dalia Ghalwash, • Ahmed El Barbary
Dentistry
Objective: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) compares the effectiveness of ozone gel (GeliO3) and hyaluronic acid (HA) gel(Gengigel) in enhancing wound healing and reducing postoperative discomfort following free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. Methods: Fifty-six patients requiring FGG for mucogingival defects were randomly assigned into two groups: the ozone gel group and the HA gel group. The primary outcome was postoperative pain, assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS) and analgesic consumption. Secondary outcomes included wound healing, evaluated using the Landry healing index, and color match assess-ment. Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests with a significance level of p< 0:05.Results: Both treatment groups exhibited significant pain reduction over time (p< 0:001). Although there was no statistically significant difference between the groups, a faster decline in pain was observed in the ozone group by Day 3. Analgesic consumption was significantly lower in the ozone group on Days 2 and 3 (p ¼ 0:042). The healing index and color match scores showed a steady improvement in both groups, with the ozone group demonstrating slightly higher values at various time points, though not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both ozone gel and HA gel effectively enhanced post-FGG healing, reduced pain, and improved tissue esthetics.Ozone therapy showed potential advantages in early pain relief and lower analgesic dependence. These findings suggest that ozonetherapy may serve as an alternative or adjunctive treatment for palatal wound management in periodontal surgery. Furtherresearch is needed to confirm its clinical superiority over HA gel.

Bearing The How: Self-Compassion, Religiosity, And Basic Psychological Needs As Predictors Of Meaning In Life, Benjamin Wenndorf
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
While meaning in life (MIL) has been established as a significant contributor to psychologists’ understanding of wellbeing (Pollet & Schnell, 2017; Steger et al., 2008; Steger et al., 2011), some theorists believe MIL to be the fundamental human drive (Frankl, 1946/1962). Despite the significance that has been placed on MIL as a core component of human existence, little research has explored more than one variable at a time in relationship to MIL. Recent literature has explored self-determination theory’s (SDT) basic psychological needs microtheory as a predictive model for understanding MIL within a greater context of positive psychology (Martela et al., …
