Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Mental health and psychological well-being continue to be significant areas of concern for collegiate student-athletes. Researchers have identified the perceived barriers preventing student-athletes from using mental health services which include lack of knowledge, limited access, and perceived negative stigma (e.g., Harris & Maher, 2023; Yoon & Petrie, 2023). Organizational culture, loosely defined as a group’s accumulated shared learning (Schein & Schein, 2017), plays an important role in guiding the behaviors of its members. Developing a positive athletic department culture around mental health can, in turn, be beneficial to increasing student-athletes’ help-seeking behaviors. The purpose of this study was to explore …

On “Subconferencing” As A Mode Of Study, Amanda Huron, Christian Anderson, Eli Meyerhoff, Elsa Noterman
#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College
In this roundtable discussion, four participants reflect on their experiences organizing “subconferences”—spaces for collective gathering, studying, and mutual aid within and beyond professionalized academic conferences. Intersecting recent and ongoing struggles over labor in higher education and in conversation with core ideas from Eli Meyerhoff’s (2019) book, Beyond Education, the discussion reflects on insights gained and connections made over the course of a decade organizing such spaces. In so doing, the discussion critically engages a range of issues including struggles over the conditions of academic labor and knowledge production; tensions between the pressures of professionalization, the necessity of radical praxis, …
When Students Snap: Thoughts About Radical Study Within The Impasse Of Trinity College, Isaac Kamola
When Students Snap: Thoughts About Radical Study Within The Impasse Of Trinity College, Isaac Kamola
#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College
This contribution explores two Instagram accounts—@BlackAtTrin and @TrinSurvivors— published during the summer of 2020 which, in the context of nation-wide protests against the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, became important forums for documenting, publicizing, and archiving the lived student experiences of systemic racism and sexual violence at Trinity College. Using Eli Meyerhoff’s book Beyond Education as a framework, this essay examines how students and alumni “snapped” at the college, making demands in ways that attempted to grapple with the impasse of decades of systemic racism and misogyny at Trinity, and society at large. These efforts to confront the …
Understanding Alternative Modes Of Study In The 2018 K12 Education Strikes, Erin Dyke
Understanding Alternative Modes Of Study In The 2018 K12 Education Strikes, Erin Dyke
#CritEdPol: Journal of Critical Education Policy Studies at Swarthmore College
In this article, I draw on Eli Meyerhoff’s (2019) Beyond Education: Radical Studying for Another World to suggest that the 2018 “red state” K12 education strikes created spaces, if momentary and often fraught, for many education workers to engage or expand alternative modes of study, modes that have long constituted predominantly women- and rank-and-file-led educator labor organizing. First, I elaborate Eli Meyerhoff’s theorization of modes of study as world-making in the context of education labor organizing and unions. Specifically, I engage his important critique of education as a particular, romanticized mode of study that contributes to liberal capitalist world-making. …

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South
Background: Drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Over the past two decades, drug overdose deaths have dramatically increased in the United States, and the rise in the number of drug overdose deaths is mostly due to opioids. This descriptive study aimed to examine trends in drug overdose deaths according to age, sex, and race/ethnicity from 2010 to 2020 in Alabama.
Methods: We used data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) and the U.S. Census Bureau to calculate age-adjusted mortality rates for specific age groups, gender, and race/ethnicity. We used SAS Version …

Journal of Maine Medical Center
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected structurally vulnerable populations in the United States. COVID-19 testing was instrumental in controlling viral spread and linking people to treatment; however, testing rates were lower among racial and ethnic minority groups. Our objective was to identify factors associated with desired COVID-19 testing behavior among vulnerable populations.
Methods: We conducted an exploratory cohort study of at-home COVID-19 testing between March 2022 and November 2023 in Portland, Maine. Partnering with trusted community organizations, we engaged participants from immigrant, housing-unstable, substance-using, and low-income/uninsured communities. Participants received 5 at-home COVID-19 tests every 8 weeks for 48 weeks. Participants …
Understanding The Relationship Of Culture And Language With Hiv, Cora Coletti
Understanding The Relationship Of Culture And Language With Hiv, Cora Coletti
Student Scholar Symposium
HIV impacts 39.9 million people worldwide. Many people with HIV are the victims of stigmatizing language used by physicians, family members, and community members. In 2015 the Centers for Disease Control and the American Medical Association added language guidelines to prevent additional stigma in medical and scientific literature. Analyzing research from Baltimore, Nigeria, and Rwanda creates a global view of the impacts of language and culture on public health materials presented in communities where HIV is prevalent. Researching the perspectives of women, mothers, and physicians provides a diverse range of experiences people with HIV have gone through. Synthesizing the current …

3d Modeling Of Brain Removal With Cranial Nerve Preservation, Lauren Blank, Sophia Cox, Avery Preston
Student Scholar Symposium
3D Modeling of Brain Removal with Cranial Nerve Preservation Abstract: Visual- spatial skills are essential in learning anatomy as they allow students to mentally visualize and manipulate the three-dimensional structure of the human body. Traditional dissectors like Grant’s Dissector typically provide only 2D images to guide brain removal. These manuals often do not include the occipital wedge approach, which favors cranial nerve preservation during brain dissection. A 3D model that assists students in learning a non-traditional dissection approach through manipulating a brain model will help improve mental rotation skills, especially benefiting those with weaker spatial abilities. In collaboration with Lipscomb …

Examining The Influence Of Mapped Bloom's Taxonomy Items On The Student Pharmacist Experience, Annaston Young
Student Scholar Symposium
Objective: To evaluate the impact of transparent Bloom’s Taxonomy (BT) item mapping on the student experience.
Methods: First-year student pharmacists were oriented to BT twice during their first semester. Using a quasi-experimental research design, a point-of-care testing (POCT) active learning exercise and related low-stakes assessment were identified for the intervention. Following the active learning, a five-question “exit ticket” on Google Forms was randomly distributed based on QR codes: Group 1 (n=20) had no BT item mapping and Group 2 (n=20) had BT labels for each item. Performance, confidence, and experience evaluation were captured on each exit ticket. Descriptive statistics were …
