Geographic Disparity And The Comparison Of Projectile Points In Central California, Robert Clark Newcomb
Geographic Disparity And The Comparison Of Projectile Points In Central California, Robert Clark Newcomb
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The study of stone projectile point typology is not new. Many scholars have developed both similar and very different approaches to classifying various point types based on a wide variety of key morphological characteristics. The comparison of projectile point types and sizes from disparate regions, however, has not been widely examined. This research utilizes the classification systems of Noel Justice (Justice 2002a) and Brian Glenn (Glenn 1991) as a basis for comparing projectile point specimens from two disparate geographic regions. The first specimen collection comes from the Vandenberg Space Force Base region on the central coast of California and represents …

Who Are We Restoring Maunalua For? Place Name Resurgence And Environmental Restoration In Maunalua, O‘Ahu, Cassidy J. Hollenbeck
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
While numerous research studies have been published in recent decades on biological degradation and climate risks facing Maunalua, very few studies have centered on the sociopolitical dimensions of this region. By celebrating community pilina (intimacy, relationship) and biocultural restoration in Maunalua, this project aims to challenge the dominant narratives of degradation on this region. Centering Decolonizing and Kanaka ‘Ōiwi methodologies, this project builds on N. Ha‘alilo Solomon’s book chapter, Maunalua: Shifting Nomenclatures and the Reconfiguration of Space in Hawaii Kai (2022), celebrating ongoing projects of inoa ‘āina (place name) resurgence. Engaging snowball sampling in qualitative community-based participatory research methods, I …

The Spiritual Foundations Of An Unbreakable Ukraine During The War, Olena Rohova, Tetiana Lysokolenko, Iryna Karpan
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
An analysis of the spiritual foundations of the ability of Ukrainian society to resist the illegal military aggression of a country whose resources significantly exceed those of Ukraine. Ukraine’s unbreakability is connected to the dominant values and worldview of its representatives, which include spirituality responsible for the resiliency of individuals, the plasticity to perceive challenges of fate, and the responses of radical changes of being. The central idea of resiliency includes the revival of the most important religious, cultural, and historical factors of collective spirituality in Ukrainian society. The religious values introduced into the Ukrainian culture by Christianity as a …

Adapting Gingles & Retaining Voter Power: Applying The Vra To State Judicial Retention Elections, Jake Mazeitis
Adapting Gingles & Retaining Voter Power: Applying The Vra To State Judicial Retention Elections, Jake Mazeitis
Nebraska Law Review
State supreme courts play a crucial yet overlooked role in our nation’s judiciary. They are also predominantly White. In states with judicial elections, this racial homogeneity suggests that voters of color may not have an equal opportunity to “elect representatives of their choice” as required by the Voting Rights Act (VRA). While federal courts frequently apply the VRA to judicial elections resembling legislative and executive contests, those same tribunals have failed to protect voters of color in non-competitive judicial retention elections. This failure is due in part to Thornburg v. Gingles, which established three threshold requirements for plaintiffs in …

Deciding humanitarian actions during relief distribution is a crucial and challengingtask.Humanitarian decision-makers (HDM) make manycritical decisions during disaster responses, but they sufferfrom incomplete, irrelevant, and sometimes excessive humanitarian operations-related disaster datain many situations.Hence, for constructive and meaningful support in decision-making, HDMs oftenappreciate computer-basedinformation systems(IS) (i.e. humanitarian decision support systems) that require non-functional requirements (NFRs) for their development. To identify those necessary NFRs, we applied the grounded theory approach to analyze 61 literature-and field-based decision-making parameters reported in the primary author's previous research (Rahman and Majchrzak (2020)). Our analysis resulted in 13 essentialNFRs and four key propositions to guide relief distribution decision-making …

Adapting Project Management Life Cycles For Blockchain Implementation: A Thematic Pilot Study., Cherie Noteboom, Aravindh Sekar, Deb Tech
Research & Publications
Blockchain implementation challenges traditional project management practices due to its decentralized, cross-organizational nature. This exploratory study examines how project management life cycle processes must adapt to support successful blockchain adoption. Using open coding and thematic analysis of five expert interviews, key themes were identified and mapped to the five PMBOK process groups. The findings reveal that blockchain projects demand broader stakeholder engagement, iterative planning, human-centered execution, decentralized monitoring, and long-term sustainability planning. By aligning emergent themes with established project management phases, this study highlights the need for a flexible, ecosystem-focused approach to managing blockchain initiatives. The results offer practical insights …

Ecosocialism, Degrowth, And Global South Thought: Critical Legal Transformations, Nicholas F. Stump
Ecosocialism, Degrowth, And Global South Thought: Critical Legal Transformations, Nicholas F. Stump
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
This Article explores how Critical Legal Research (CLR) can help drive transformations of our ecological political economy towards true system change. CLR entails a critical legal theory–informed approach to legal and broader socio-legal research. After articulating the CLR framework, this Article explores its potential in the context of leading and intertwined bodies of theory for transformative change: ecosocialism, degrowth, and Global South and Indigenous thought. Next, this Article offers concrete avenues to help pursue such emancipatory change—i.e., specifically focusing on the popular conception of an “ecosocialist transition.” Ecosocialist transition strategies include non-reformist reforms, dual power, a radical just transition, and …
Rhythm Against Poethics, Jayvyn Dacas
Rhythm Against Poethics, Jayvyn Dacas
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis stages an auto-poetic ethnography that listens to, and moves with, the anterior spaces of Black life. Those murmurs, hums, musical hesitations, and infrastructural vibrations that refuse capture by dominant epistemic regimes. Drawing from Ramon Amaro’s reading of Sylvia Wynter, Katherine McKittrick and Alexander Weheliye’s reflections on sound, Fred Moten’s insights on displacement, and Tendayi Sithole’s attention to the phonographic, the project situates music production as method and unworlding. Through engagements with the 808, sampling, sound systems, and embodied listening across Florida. Spaces like the warehouse, the party, record stores, and community become the work of Black voices, and …

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Indonesia’s coastal regions have distinct charateristics. However, nearly all of these coastal regions are vulnerable to tidal floods. The purpose of this study is to determine the features of coastal regions in Indonesia that have been damaged by tidal floods, as well as the actions implemented to mitigate disaster risk. Thus study takes a qualitiative method with explanatory analysis. The Island Spatial Planning is used to classify Indonesia’s archipelagic regions. An urban area vulnerable to tidal flood was selected from each archipelagic region. The characteristics of coastal regions affected by tidal flood were identified by the tidal flood characteristics, coastal physiography. …

We Can't Apply From The Grave: Why The Asylum Standard Of Proof Fails Those Who Need It Most, Hilana Said
We Can't Apply From The Grave: Why The Asylum Standard Of Proof Fails Those Who Need It Most, Hilana Said
American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
A woman in Florida sits in front of her TV, unsure if the sound of static is coming from shock or the screen. Her eyes reflect the fires that blaze from within her church in Alexandria, Egypt. Numbly, the pads of her fingers attempt to call family members, praying that, for once, they skipped service. She lets go of a breath she did not know she was holding. The time between now and another attack exists on a clock that she cannot see. But she knows it is ticking.
The Usual Suspects: A Review Of Common Dysbiosis Of The Human Mouth, And The Associated Microbial Species, Sophie Katherine Shields
The Usual Suspects: A Review Of Common Dysbiosis Of The Human Mouth, And The Associated Microbial Species, Sophie Katherine Shields
Honors Theses and Capstones
The mouth, often referred to as the oral cavity in scientific literature, is described as the second most diversely populated microbiome in the human body, only after the gut. The cavity’s temperature, abundant water, high nutrient levels, and diversity of sites are all critical factors that make the oral cavity a space booming with life. The mouth harbors over 700 species of bacteria, in addition to numerous fungi, viruses, and protozoa species. Together, when working in harmony, these species provide critical supports to the functions of the human body. When dysbiosis occurs, however, the overgrowth of a single species may …

The Use Of An In Chemico Digestibility Assay To Reduce The In Vivo Fish Bioaccumulation Testing Of Nanomaterials, Craig Mchardy, Nathaniel J. Clark, Robert Clough, Richard D. Handy
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Currently for engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), there are no alternatives to bioaccumulation testing in fish as prescribed by OECD TG 305. New approaches are being sought, in order to reduce the numbers of animals used and address the ethical concerns associated with the use of vertebrates in such testing. This study aimed to demonstrate the value of an alternative method — the in chemico digestibility assay — as a tool to assess the bioaccumulation potential of ENMs. Titanium dioxide ENMs, or their equivalent bulk form, were incorporated onto a commercial fish diet and the fish digestion process was simulated in vitro …

Slum Area Detection In Dhaka City, Bangladesh, Using Satellite Remote Sensing And Deep Learning, Soubhoon Sadeq Shinjini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dhaka City, a rapidly growing megacity and high-density developing area in Bangladesh, faces numerous urbanization challenges. Among these, informal settlements or slum areas pose serious concerns for authorities and policymakers striving to improve living conditions for slum dwellers. Dhaka City’s slums are characterized by high-density, one- or two-story structures made of low-cost materials, often located adjacent to natural water bodies and lacking basic public infrastructure (Ahmed 2014; Iqbal 2014; Jahan 2012). The need for accurate and up-to-date data on these settlements is crucial for researchers and policymakers, particularly for implementing slum upgradation and resettlement programs. However, traditional field surveys for …

Quackery Unmask’D: Defining Quackery In English And American Vernacular Medical Works, C. 1600-1800, Katherine Rose Horan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This thesis argues that, from 1600 to 1800, healers in both England and America conceptualized quackery through an evolving understanding of what made a medical practitioner “acceptable.” Through a close examination of vernacular medical print published in both England and America throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this thesis complicates earlier understandings of quackery as being disconnected from politics and social biases. Instead, medical authors used social position—specifically gender, race, and religion—and medical philosophy as ways to identify quacks. In England, the Royal College of Physicians used quackery to delegitimize their opponents, while critics of the College did the same. …
Assessing Repetitive Loss Factors In Miami-Dade And Broward Counties, Fl, Rebecca Clark
Assessing Repetitive Loss Factors In Miami-Dade And Broward Counties, Fl, Rebecca Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This dissertation examines repetitive loss factors in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida. It focuses on physical building characteristics and socioeconomic characteristics in an historic analysis of claims data from 1977 through 2014. Later, the focus is on predicted areas, or “hotspots” where climate-change induced sea level rise in conjunction with increased storm activity may cause increased flooding in the future. The study employs various statistical models, including Poisson and negative binomial regression modeling, spatial regression modeling and hot spot analysis to analyze FEMA property claims data and socioeconomic indicators.
The first part investigates the relationship between building characteristics and flooding …

Entrepreneur's Family Status, Strategy, Performance, Zdenka Cumano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This research aims to illuminate the relationship between marital status and entrepreneurial performance among entrepreneurs, focusing on the implications for female entrepreneurs. While existing studies have predominantly examined gender-related challenges, such as disparities in access to financial and social capital, the role of marital status has received limited attention. Drawing on Becker’s seminal work (1965, 1974) on time allocation and human capital investment, this study argues that entrepreneurs face distinct risks and resource constraints compared to employees, who benefit from organizational risk-sharing and stable income. In contrast, entrepreneurs bear the full burden of market uncertainty and opportunity costs, making personal …

Whispers From The Islands Preserving And Reinterpreting Caribbean Myths Through Augmented Narratives, Tatyanna Gay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This thesis explores the role of design as a contemporary medium for preserving, reinterpreting, and disseminating Caribbean cultural myths through visual storytelling. Focusing on using Augmented Reality (AR) and paper sculpture, this research examines how immersive technologies can bridge the gap between oral traditions and digital innovation to safeguard intangible heritage. Centering Caribbean folklore, specifically myths such as the Chickcharney, the Lusca, and the La Diablesse, this work analyzes these stories' historical, symbolic, and social functions within Caribbean identity formation and collective memories.
Drawing on interdisciplinary frameworks from mythology studies, design history, and visual culture, the project investigates how AR …

Assessing Trophic Pathways In The Southern Indian River Lagoon Using Fatty Acid Markers, Joedeelee Rigdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) comprises over 200 Km of the Florida’s east coast and is a bar-built estuary making up one of the most biodiverse estuarine environments in North America. Toxins produced by increasingly frequent harmful algae blooms in the IRL are found throughout the food web, from zooplankton to fish, to apex predators. The impact of species characterized as harmful algae can be traced using fatty acid markers, as phytoplankton and algae that make up HABs produce characteristic poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which have conservative ratios between trophic levels. This study measured the fatty acid composition of two …

Motherhood: An Orphan Of American Politics A Comparative Analysis Of State Actors As Institutions, Kristina Ramskyte-Juszczak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The political geography of America is relatively unique in the world: the United States is a powerful and wealthy country, but also consists of sub-national actors that retain significant legal powers within their own borders. The political actors in America, at both this smaller level and at the larger Federal level, have uniquely strong institutional power to shape the social and civic life of their citizens. Despite their absolute significance to the survival of their societies, mothers and mothers’ rights have largely been ignored or taken second place to other political issues. As many countries in Europe and other regions …
