Introduction: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rare, disabling and incurable illness marked by relentless degeneration of motor neurons with loss of voluntary motor function and eventual death. In the West, patient demographics and clinical characteristics are well documented. Available African research is mostly for North, West and South Africa with a knowledge gap existing on the East African illness. This study characterized MND phenotype in a Kenyan population.

Objectives: To describe the clinical phenotype and outcomes of MND in a Kenyan hospital-based population.

This article offers a critical assessment of Storying Extinction: Responding to the Loss of North Idaho’s Mountain Caribou, a public-facing digital environmental humanities project produced by a team of University of Idaho Library researchers following the 2019 extirpation of mountain caribou from the South Selkirk Mountains of the Inland Northwest (the last caribou to inhabit the contiguous United States). Are Environmentally Sensitive Firms More Likely To Release Corporate Environmental Disclosures? Evidence From Environmental Risk Management, Chune Young Chung, Incheol Kim, Rong Yang

This study examines the environmental risk management practices of US firms operating in environmentally sensitive industries. Using two proxy variables for ex ante environmental policy risk—firm-level toxic chemical emissions and climate-related keywords in annual financial statements—we demonstrate that firms facing high ex ante environmental policy risk tend to increase the frequency and length of their voluntary sustainability reports. Additionally, we find that proactive sustainability disclosures significantly mitigate firm-level systematic risk (beta) and associated litigation risk. This risk reduction is more pronounced among firms with substantial green innovations and stronger corporate governance practices. Overall, this study highlights the causes and consequences …

Rates of tree mortality are increasing globally, with implications for forests and climate. Yet, how and why these trends vary globally remain unknown. Developing a comprehensive assessment of global tree mortality will require systematically integrating data from ground-based long-term forest monitoring with large-scale remote sensing. We surveyed the metadata from 466 865 forest monitoring plots across 89 countries and five continents using questionnaires and discuss the potential to use these to estimate tree mortality trends globally. Our survey shows that the area monitored has increased steadily since 1960, but we also identify many regions with limited ground-based information on tree …

Black carbon from biomass and fossil fuel burning is an important aerosol in the climate system. Understanding its historical variation is crucial to constrain current anthropogenic and wildfire impacts on the atmosphere. Patagonia was proposed previously as a major source region for the late 13th century black carbon increase observed in an ice core from the northern Antarctic Peninsula but not in continental Antarctic ice cores. Here, we reconstruct regional black carbon trends using high-resolution measurements of refractory black carbon (rBC) in two Patagonian lake-sediment cores spanning the last two millennia and compare the results with other records of fire …

Accurate assessment of forest carbon dynamics is a critical element of appraising forest-based Natural Climate Solutions. National forest inventory and analysis (FIA) data provide valuable pool-based estimates of carbon stocks, but have been underutilized to inform carbon cycle modeling for forest carbon dynamics with stand development. This study introduces a hierarchical data assimilation (HDA) framework to optimize modeling parameters by incrementally assimilating measured carbon pool data into the model. We found that most carbon stocks could be reproduced by constrained parameters after each HDA step. Using aboveground live biomass (AGB) alone in HDA was able to reproduce the AGB trajectories …

This paper examines eighteen narratives of Ukrainian internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the ongoing war and interprets them through the lens of Christian hope as articulated by Jürgen Moltmann. Using Paul Ricoeur’s threefold mimetic theory—prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration—the study analyzes how personal stories reveal theological meanings embedded in experiences of suffering, trauma, and displacement. The narratives highlight the role of history in displacement, the capacity of traumatized persons to reinterpret suffering through hope, and the longing to regain home. We examined relations among select components of the 4-H Thriving Model, focusing on youth sparks and four presumed determinants: program quality, developmental relationships, situational engagement, and dosage. Based on our results and results of previous studies, we propose a formal theory of youth program sparks. Three hundred fifty-six Texas 4-H youth from a variety of 4-H programs state-wide completed a questionnaire measuring sparks, program quality, developmental relationships, situational engagement, and 4-H program dosage. We measured two indicators of thriving: growth mindset and hopeful purpose. Lynette D. Morrison, the Singing Candy Lady (SCL), is a beloved folk icon in Philadelphia, especially among Black working-class residents. She roams the city with her yellow box of popular candies, singing, joking, and encouraging folks to buy her candy. Her presence and personality inspire a sense of place for those who reside in dispossession. However, when identifying the needs of the ‘hood, figures such as the SCL may seem trivial when compared to other more “serious” efforts and actors. Phylogeographical studies integrated with niche modelling can provide insights into divergence events and demography. This study explores the evolutionary history, demographic patterns, and spatiotemporal dynamics of seven South American lizard species of the Anolis chrysolepis species group, which has been proposed to be strongly impacted by Pleistocene climatic fluctuations under the Refugia Hypothesis. Aim: Pre-degradation baseline conditions (references) provide crucial context for restoration actions. Here, we compare vegetation structure and its driving processes across the main pre-agricultural references discussed for temperate Europe: the Last Interglacial and the early-mid Holocene—before and after the arrival of Homo sapiens, respectively. Location: Temperate Europe. Time Period: The first ~4000–6000 years, excluding the initial early-successional phases, of the Last Interglacial (PAAZ III) and Holocene (8700–5700 BP). This article investigates why Turkey’s middle-to-low-income earners, the segment of the population that has suffered the most from the neoliberal policies of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (Justice and Development Party AKP), have continued to support the party for so long. Using a case study approach based on secondary data, this article argues that the source of the AKP’s enduring legitimacy lies in their skill in utilising political Islam to consolidate neoliberalism. Civil society is often regarded as an essential foundation for democratic consolidation, but in Thailand, civil society also plays a crucial role in maintaining authoritarian rule. This article analyzes how pro-authoritarian civil society movements—Thai Bhakdi and “We Support Prayuth”—emerged and operated in the context of the historical relationship between the military and the monarchy and political polarisation since the 2006 coup.
