Comparative urban research in the USA has an unacknowledged data and methodological problem at the metropolitan scale, rooted in geographic and definitional boundary changes of urban areas across time. In this article, we introduce a new spatial dataset, decision criteria, and methodological protocol for longitudinal and comparative research with US metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs)—known as ‘metros’—in a way that centers a ‘city-centric’ approach to comparison while significantly reducing spatial error and bias. First, we review gaps and limitations of existing approaches and identify three major but previously unacknowledged sources of error, including a new source of bias we call ‘spanning …

Applying Moral Foundations Theory To Examine Consumer Vulnerability: Evidence From Cash App, Atanas Nixon, Jiyoon An
AMTP Proceedings 2025
This study investigates how consumers' moral emotions can improve our understanding of their vulnerability in financial services from the perspective of Transformative Service Research (TSR). The study uses the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's archive of consumer complaints about Cash App, a peer-to-peer payment platform, as the empirical context. The Moral Foundation Theory, which includes five dimensions of moral concerns (care/harm, fairness/cheating, loyalty/betrayal, authority/subversion, and purity/degradation), was applied to assess consumer vulnerability. Two analyses were conducted: spatial and discourse analyses. Whereas spatial analysis was used to examine aggregated levels of moral emotions across different states, discourse analysis was conducted on …

Metrics, And How It All Came About, Harold E. Padelford
The Geographical Bulletin
Surveying? Just use the laser beam for a measuring device; accuracy of one mm to a range of eight km. But why the need for accuracy and what is a meter? The use of the meter as the basis of all linear measurement has been a matter of controversy for several centuries. Some few nations oppose the adoption of the metric system, most nations have adopted it wholly. No effort will be made here to analyze the controversy. However, the controversy leads one to wonder why and how the metric system came into existence. The purpose of this article is …

The St. Clair River Delta A Unique Lake Delta*, C. Nicholas Raphael, Eugene Jaworski
The Geographical Bulletin
Because of long-term and shortterm lake level changes, the geomorphology and vegetation patterns of the St. Clair River delta are unique. Marine delta studies and Late Quaternary chronology in the Great Lakes have progressed significantly in the past decade and the delta is investigated from the viewpoint of these developments. Although this delta has a shape similar to the Mississippi River delta, several forms and processes are different.

The energy problem is the first of its kind to have repercussions throughout the world. Driven by unavoidable economic circumstances, it would have developed eventually regardless of the decisions of particular world leaders or consortiums. Energy supply and demand have created new tensions and uncertainties within and among countries. The problem has profound impact on the management of a nation's economy and affects relations between nations. It requires adjustments for all to make; it involves breaking old contacts and establishing new international ties.

A-P-A-T-H-Y is defined as "Indifference to what appeals to feelings or interests." Apathy lacks constructiveness. In extreme form it denotes a major negative quality. Members of the academic community should not display ~pathy; yet there are any of us to whom the adjective II pathetic" may apply. My opinion invites challenge. If I am not conre ted, apparently my comments are appropriate, and my audience is truly apathetic. First, I would like to challenge students of geography, especially those in Gamma Theta Upsilon. As a supposedly inte lectually elite 9 oup, I would expect them to participate in the advancement …

Inclusive Adaptation: Integrating Traditional Agroecological Knowledge With Climate-Smart Agriculture In The Upper East Region Of Ghana, Kwabena Antwi
Poster Presentations
Using traditional agroecological knowledge (TAeK) has gained global recognition as a cooperative approach to food security. Despite this, the literature is skewed towards drivers for adoption, rainfall prediction, on-farm tree management, and community risk assessment. This study employed qualitative and quantitative methods to understand the use of TAeK among smallholder farmers who cannot afford climate-smart agriculture (CSA) in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region of Ghana. The problem confrontation index was used to rank the barriers to using CSA. The findings showed that smallholder farmers in the district face several barriers to adopting CSA, including the high …

Inter-Prefectural Migration Of Older Adults In The Tokyo Metropolitan Area, Katsuyoshi Nakazawa, Shinji Komatsu
Inter-Prefectural Migration Of Older Adults In The Tokyo Metropolitan Area, Katsuyoshi Nakazawa, Shinji Komatsu
Japanese Society and Culture
This study uses population migration data from the 2020 National Census to examine the migration of older adults within the Tokyo metropolitan area and between the Tokyo metropolitan area and other areas. The main results are as follows: In the Tokyo metropolitan area, both older adults aged 65–74 and those aged 75 and over move out of Tokyo to the three surrounding prefectures. This tendency was more prevalent in those aged 75 and over than those aged 65–74. Regarding migration between the Tokyo metropolitan area and other areas, the results show the opposite trend, with those aged 65–74 outflowing from …
Some Issues In Armed Conflict And Human Rights: Issues Toward Human Rights And Applicable Law In The Battlefield, Hiroshi Saito
Some Issues In Armed Conflict And Human Rights: Issues Toward Human Rights And Applicable Law In The Battlefield, Hiroshi Saito
Japanese Society and Culture
In recent years, Japan’s legal system regarding defense has improved, but little research has been conducted on what would happen if Japanese territory became a battlefield. Due to the Japan–US Security Treaty and the Japan–US Status of Forces Agreement, Japanese territory could technically become a space for armed conflict in the wake of US military action. If this happened, various legal issues would arise, but under the Japanese Constitution and domestic laws, which are primarily concerned with the protection of human rights, there would be a dual application of international humanitarian law and domestic laws including the Constitution. An important …

Motivations For Authentic English Use And L2 Identity Expression Through Content Sharing And Commentary On Social Media, Paul Mcentee
Japanese Society and Culture
This essay explores the intersection of second language acquisition, social media engagement, and identity construction among language learners at a private university in Tokyo, Japan. Focused on understanding motivations for using English in online spaces, the research employs mixed methods to analyse social media use and motivations.
The study reveals that while students are active consumers of social media, they can use these platforms as a productive tool for language expression with proper guidance. It highlights the potential for social media to enhance language learning beyond the classroom, offering insights for educators to incorporate digital spaces into curricula effectively.

Black Sonicism: Cultural Maintenance And Evolution Through New Orleans Bounce Music, Leandrea L. Clay
Black Sonicism: Cultural Maintenance And Evolution Through New Orleans Bounce Music, Leandrea L. Clay
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
As a form of regional hip-hop, Bounce music operates as an expressive culture native to New Orleans with generational lineages of artists. Black sonicism is a regionally and digitally-sensitive theoretical framework that seeks to conceptualize how Black soundmakers and their audiences create a dialogic relationship through three components: responsive participation, spatial relatability, and expressed ratchetry. I catalog each of these components through three audience formations—origin, scope, and reception—to understand the tensions between Black music, regional identity, and technology. From this project, I propose a theoretical development to consider how Black artists continually pass down communal histories through their music while …

Exposure To Compound Climate Hazards Transmitted Via Global Agricultural Trade Networks, Patrick W. Keys, Elizabeth A. Barnes, Noah S. Diffenbaugh, Thomas Hertel, Uris L C Baldos, Johanna Hedlund
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Compound climate hazards, such as co-occurring temperature and precipitation extremes, substantially impact people and ecosystems. Internal climate variability combines with the forced global warming response to determine both the magnitude and spatial distribution of these events, and their consequences can propagate from one country to another via many pathways. We examine how exposure to compound climate hazards in one country is transmitted internationally via agricultural trade networks by analyzing a large ensemble of climate model simulations and comprehensive trade data of four crops (i.e. wheat, maize, rice and soya). Combinations of variability-driven climate patterns and existing global agricultural trade give …

The increase of new technologies in fruit-growing crops has increased productivity in cultural practices and helped farmers expand their production areas. This work aimed to quantify labor performance in winter pruning of apple trees, using manual and electronic scissors associated with utilizing a pruning platform and ladders. The treatments consisted of two types of pruning shears and two support systems. A pruner carried out pruning for 16 days, with a journey of 10 h per day. The average yield in manual pruning with a ladder was 21.35 plants pruned per hour per man. Using a platform, the yield increased to …

Data Collection And Field Research Opportunities And Problems In India, A. K. Chakravarti
The Geographical Bulletin
There are few countries in the world which can provide such a wide range of problems for field study as India. For both macro and micro level studies, spatial variations in physical, cultural, economic and political conditions within a short distance may be phenomenal and provide a complex matrix for analysis. India is divided into linguistic states. A linguistic state in turn may contain tertiary subcultures, each with a different set of conditions within its boundaries. On a linguistic state may be superimposed three distinct areas of tertiary subcultures, viz., urban, rural-and tribal, each with different levels of education, standard …
