Protecting Female Workers Amidst The Controversy Of Cheap Labor Market: A Comparative Advantage Analysis In Southeast Asia, Dita Nur Safitri
Protecting Female Workers Amidst The Controversy Of Cheap Labor Market: A Comparative Advantage Analysis In Southeast Asia, Dita Nur Safitri
Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial
In Southeast Asia, the cheap labor market is frequently mentioned as one of the comparative advantages that drive growth in the economy. However, this market frequently employs harmful labour practices against female workers. This study investigates the intersection of gender, labour practices, and economic advantages in the region, concentrating on the obstacles and protective measures for female workers. The key objective of this study is to examine how female workers are protected in Southeast Asia's low-wage labour markets, as well as to assess the effectiveness of these safeguards in preventing exploitation and improving working conditions. This study uses a comparative …

Moderating Effect Of Fantasy Football Participation And Location On Team Identification And Nfl Fandom, Devon Hudson
Moderating Effect Of Fantasy Football Participation And Location On Team Identification And Nfl Fandom, Devon Hudson
Masters Theses
This study explores how fantasy football participation in varying geographic proximities to NFL teams has altered traditional fan allegiances (i.e. team loyalty or fandom) as an alternate consumer product for the game of football. After utilizing survey data to quantify concepts of fandom and team identification amongst respondents, respondent groups were sorted into various groups based on both fantasy participation and location relevant to NFL teams. A series of hypotheses describing relationships between proximity, fantasy football participation, and fan perceptions are analyzed using a series of statistical tests. No statistical significance was found when comparing strength of team identification amongst …
Women Writers In The Romantic Age, John C. Isbell
Women Writers In The Romantic Age, John C. Isbell
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
This groundbreaking book offers a comprehensive review of six hundred and fifty women writers from over fifty national traditions, spanning Europe and the Americas during the transformative years of 1776 to 1848. Framed by revolutionary upheavals, the book explores how women writers shaped and reflected Romanticism’s global currents. It fills a critical scholarly gap, connecting disparate traditions and uncovering voices often overlooked in male-dominated literary histories. Through concise entries, the book names every woman writer identified in its vast research, from celebrated figures like Phillis Wheatley to lesser-known authors whose manuscripts lay buried in archives. Each entry provides essential biographical …
Humanist Copyright, Jane C. Ginsburg
Humanist Copyright, Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
This exploration of the role of authorship in copyright law proceeds in three parts: historical, doctrinal, and predictive. First, I will review the development of author-focused property rights in the pre-copyright regimes of printing privileges and in early Anglo-American copyright law through the 1909 U.S. Copyright Act. Second, I will analyze the extent to which the present U.S. copyright law does (and does not) honor human authorship. Finally, I will consider the potential responses of copyright law to the claims of proprietary rights in AI-generated outputs. I will explain why the humanist orientation of U.S. copyright law validates the position …
Open Educational Resources For A More Just Romanticism, Leila Walker
Open Educational Resources For A More Just Romanticism, Leila Walker
Publications and Research
Efforts to diversify the field of Romanticism, long overdue, have intensified
recently, and many Romanticist organizations now sponsor programmes
aimed at amplifying Black and Brown voices. Most of these efforts have
focused on content: how to present Romanticism as a global movement
and include non-white authors in our anthologies and syllabi. While these
much-needed changes address some of the field’s traditional blind spots,
they do little to materially benefit our most vulnerable students or to
address the structural barriers that maintain Romanticism’s exclusionary
status quo. Open educational resources, or OERs, are one way to begin
productively transforming the way the …
Policing Borders, Abandoning Rights: The Human Cost Of Eu Frontier Policy And Civil Society’S Response, Abena Afriyie
Policing Borders, Abandoning Rights: The Human Cost Of Eu Frontier Policy And Civil Society’S Response, Abena Afriyie
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research examines the human rights consequences of recent shifts in the European Union and Spain’s immigration policies, which increasingly prioritize deterrence, externalization, and securitization over the protection of migrants’ rights. These policies, often framed as measures to combat irregular migration, have included the outsourcing of border control to third countries, such as Libya and Morocco, as well as the criminalization of humanitarian organizations engaged in search and rescue operations. By outsourcing border control to third countries, these policies exacerbate misinformation and anti-immigration sentiment while pushing asylum seekers into perilous transit routes fraught with abuse. Such strategies push migrants into …

“Everybody Else Seems To Be Able To Get Help”: Rural Regulation, Access Loss, And Antigovernment Sentiment, Jennifer Sherman
“Everybody Else Seems To Be Able To Get Help”: Rural Regulation, Access Loss, And Antigovernment Sentiment, Jennifer Sherman
West Virginia Law Review
This Essay draws upon two decades of the author’s research on rural United States communities to explicate ways in which the regulatory state has intervened in rural areas and economies, often with the claim of protecting land, natural resources, and/or wildlife. The outcomes are frequently disastrous for the human populations of those communities and generally are not planned for or mitigated by policy. The Essay argues that rural distrust of and aversion to government oversight is not caused primarily by ideological or cultural stances, but rather is an outcome of experiences of abandonment by the agencies that are meant to …
How Seeing Rural America As A Commons Can (Re)Build Mutual Respect Across The Rural-Urban Divide, Lisa R. Pruitt
How Seeing Rural America As A Commons Can (Re)Build Mutual Respect Across The Rural-Urban Divide, Lisa R. Pruitt
West Virginia Law Review
This Essay, written for a symposium that honors and amplifies Ann Eisenberg’s 2024 book, Reviving Rural America: Toward Policies for Resilience, contemplates benefits that could flow from taking seriously Eisenberg’s conceptualization of rural America as a commons. In particular, I argue that the mutual respect and collaboration necessary for a successful commons could help heal the rural-urban rift, which has widened dramatically in the last few decades. Recent studies suggest that rural residents have what scholars call a rural consciousnesses, which means that living in a rural place is a key aspect of their identity. One feature of this identity …

Negotiating Power: The Influence Of Women In Shaping Colonial Barbados And Jamacia, From 1750-1833, Giselle Rivera
Negotiating Power: The Influence Of Women In Shaping Colonial Barbados And Jamacia, From 1750-1833, Giselle Rivera
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
This study investigates the roles of European, Mulatto, and African women in colonial Barbados and Jamaica from 1750 to 1833, arguing that these women were not passive recipients of colonial structures but active agents in shaping and contesting them. Drawing on a wide array of primary sources including personal journals, legal documents, medical texts, maps, and colonial artwork this paper explores how women negotiated the intersecting hierarchies of race, class, and gender in both rural and urban contexts. In plantation settings, European women exercised informal authority within patriarchal confines, often reinforcing racial and gendered oppression, while enslaved African women navigated …
Rural Access To Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Center For Patients With Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Irene Gielen
Rural Access To Multidisciplinary Cancer Care Center For Patients With Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Irene Gielen
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common type of pancreatic cancer and among the most aggressive malignancies. It is projected to be the second leading cause of cancer related mortality in the United States by 2030. Due to its nonspecific early symptoms, PDAC often remains undetected until advanced stages, limiting treatment options and reducing survival rates.
Purpose
This project evaluated the impact of geographic distance on diagnostic staging and treatment initiation for patients with PDAC referred to the Providence Cancer Institute of Oregon (PCIO) from 2018-2023.
Methods
A retrospective chart review assessed the relationship between geographic distance, demographics, …

Evaluating The Relocation Of A Rural Hospital’S Helipad, Jamie M. Hammer
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Background
Island Hospital, a 43-bed Level III Trauma and Stroke Center in rural northwest Washington, manages over 170 annual helicopter EMS landings from Airlift Northwest, Life Flight, and the U.S. Navy. Serving as a critical hub, it provides essential care for the San Juan Islands and surrounding Salish Sea communities.
Purpose
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of relocating the helipad from the parking lot to the roof of the inpatient building on patient time to treat, safety, and staff workflow satisfaction. The previous helipad was located 360 feet opposite the ED entrance, while the new …

Developing A Pandemic-Related Mental Health Micro-Collection For An Academic Library, Dee Anna Phares
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Academic library patrons dealing with the impact of trauma, depression, anxiety, or addiction spawned or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic require materials that address the unique conditions that have shaped mental health since late 2019. This paper demonstrates how one academic library endeavored to address patrons’ needs for mental health resources by developing a “Coping and COVID-19” micro-collection.
Supreme Court Gives States The Green Light To Go Ham: The Dormant Commerce Clause In Renewable Energy In Light Of National Pork Producers, Ellie Carl
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
Two years ago, the Supreme Court slaughtered the Dormant Commerce Clause in its decision in National Pork Producers v. Ross. While the case is not explicitly about environmental law, it significantly affects environmental laws and policies, especially pertaining to state renewable portfolio standards. These state policies are especially prone to Dormant Commerce Clause litigation, given the interstate nature of electric grids. This paper argues that the scope of the Dormant Commerce Clause in light of this decision is appropriate for ensuring that states have adequate wiggle room in renewable energy regulation, but not an excessive amount of leeway so …

Local Environmental Impacts Of Data Center Proliferation, Reid Lifset, Pranava Raparla, Amy L. Stein, Lauren Bridges, Jim Mcelfish, Tim Cywinski
UF Law Faculty Publications
Demand for data centers is increasing worldwide, raising questions about the electric grid, the transition to renewable energy, and distribution infrastructure. Northern Virginia is home to data centers that process nearly 70% of global digital traffic, leading officials to call for construction, at ratepayers’ expense, of new power plants and new transmission lines across four states, as well as the continued operation of coal-powered plants that had been scheduled to go offline. On December 6, 2024, the Environmental Law Institute and the Network for Digital Economy and the Environment co-hosted a panel of experts who examined the environmental impacts and …

Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Appalachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump
Labor And Environment Entwined: A Radical Green New Deal And Just Transition In Appalachia, Anne Marie Lofaso, Nicholas F. Stump
West Virginia Law Review
In this Article, Professor Lofaso and Professor Stump propose a genuinely transformative Green New Deal and Just Transition in Appalachia. The Article opens by tracing the long history of the Appalachian labor and environmental movements. Next, the Article interrogates the common contention that the Appalachian environmental and labor movements are opposed. While this contention has substantial truth, more complex forces have been at work in the region. Fossil fuel industry elites, for instance, have wielded exaggerated “jobs versus environment” rhetoric to maximize profits and quash emergent solidarities among local workers, residents, and activists. This Article contends that a key solution …

Anti-Feminisms, Authoritarianism, And Digital Culture: A Pedagogy Project, Charlie Ambrose
Anti-Feminisms, Authoritarianism, And Digital Culture: A Pedagogy Project, Charlie Ambrose
Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies M.A. Final Projects
This project began, broadly, with my exposure to TikTok’s tradwives—a subset of content creators and influencers who advocate traditional gender roles as women, homemakers, wives, and mothers, with a particular focus on moral and religious beliefs and aesthetic practices of “womanhood.” To me, tradwives encapsulated the internet’s capacity to weaponize subtly: slow-paced, pastel videos, gentle music, and even gentler voices delivering increasingly extreme ideas about masculine and feminine roles, Christian nationalism, and white supremacy. But other threads began to appear as I delved deeper into the world of tradwives. I noticed the men’s rights groups who praised tradwives while openly …
Policy Pathways To Energy Transition: A Comparative Perspective On Portugal And The Netherlands, Anna Atticks
Policy Pathways To Energy Transition: A Comparative Perspective On Portugal And The Netherlands, Anna Atticks
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
This research examines the implementation of European Union (EU) directives—specifically, the Energy Taxation Directive (ETD), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), and the Renewable Energy Sources Directive (RED)—in Portugal and the Netherlands. While both countries operate under the jurisdiction of the EU, adopting necessary EU climate mandates, Portugal and the Netherlands implement unique national strategies to achieve the relevant targets. Specifically, each country’s strategy is primarily shaped by its geographical location, socioeconomic characteristics, and institutional capacity. Utilizing the Multi-Level Perspective (MLP) framework and two economic theories, including the Pigouvian Taxation Theory and the Porter Hypothesis, this study assesses how fiscal instruments, …
Detecting Greenwashing In The Automotive Sector: Unpacking Greenwashing In Tesla, Volkswagen, And Toyota Through Ai-Assisted Esg Evaluation, Sophie Keyser
Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice
As environmental concerns increasingly influence consumer behavior and regulatory policy, corporations face growing pressure to demonstrate sustainability. In response, some firms engage in greenwashing—the practice of exaggerating or misrepresenting environmental initiatives to appear more sustainable than they are. The automotive industry, responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions, is particularly vulnerable to this practice amid its transition to electric vehicles. This study evaluates the credibility of environmental claims made by Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota using an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted content analysis of proprietary and non-proprietary data sources. AI was employed to systematically assess and score company performance across …
