Residential Subdivisions: Underlying Themes And Associated Forms, Christopher D. King, Geoffrey Wall
Residential Subdivisions: Underlying Themes And Associated Forms, Christopher D. King, Geoffrey Wall
The Geographical Bulletin
Land is one of the most important resources available to man. Man's activities take place upon the land and his buildings are, of necessity, firmly rooted in the ground. The way in which these buildings are arranged has changed through time in response to the changing aspirations of society. Perhaps the most basic use of the land is residential. We spend most of our time at home and the environment in which we dwell influences our performance in all phases of life. In urban situations the means of utilizing the land resource is the process of land subdivision. The term …
An Assessment Of Reilly's Model Of Consumer Behavior, Patricia L. Drews
An Assessment Of Reilly's Model Of Consumer Behavior, Patricia L. Drews
The Geographical Bulletin
All human behavior occurs in space and can therefore be studied in a manner that emphasizes the locational components of that behavior. One tenent fundamental to spatiallyfocused studies is that decisions related to spatial behavior are perceived as rational. This paper exam'ines a model of a particular type of spatial behavior involving decisions-the shopping behavior of rural people when buying retail goods or services that are relatively ubiquitous. William J, Reilly's law of retail gravitationl and the related breaking-point equation, derived mathematically from Reilly's law and explicitly stated byPaul D. Converse and associates2 , provide a model that predicts which …
The City At The Bottom Of Lake Michigan, Lawrence G. Wolf
The City At The Bottom Of Lake Michigan, Lawrence G. Wolf
The Geographical Bulletin
The New York Times, Sunday, February 17, 1974, reported a subterranean heat source extending from Mexico to above the Salton Sea. If subterranean geothermal sources can be gotten out of the air over the Salton Sea, what next? A week later a radio announcer was heard saying a balloonist was lost over the ocean below Morocco. If the ocean is now beneath Morocco, no wonder he was lost! Journalists are not the only ones living in an unreal world. The United Nations and the Population Reference Bureau end the North American continent at the Rio Grande! The continents of North …
The Search For Spatial Theories: On The Role Of Conceptual And Computational Models In Geographic Research, Daniel A. Griffith
The Search For Spatial Theories: On The Role Of Conceptual And Computational Models In Geographic Research, Daniel A. Griffith
The Geographical Bulletin
At present academic inquiry is guided by various research paradigms, the most popular ones being those affiliated with metaphysics, phenomenology and positivism, while the literature to date lacks an explicit structural typology identifying and interrelating these formats. As a result, numerous peculiar classification schemes have been created. For example, Kerlinger indicates that reesearch in general is comprised of three different modes, namely behavioral, historical and methodological~ Harvey, following ' Hempel, distinguishes between deductive-nomological and inductive-systematization, viewing the hypothetico-deductive system as a special case of this former type2 Olsson talks about formal as opposed to substantive research~ And Relph, exemplifying a …
Geographic Research And International Trade, J. Harold Leaman
Geographic Research And International Trade, J. Harold Leaman
The Geographical Bulletin
At the present time, the geographic and economic studies which have examined various aspects of international trade have been mainly concerned with identifying the patterns which exist. Very little attention has been given to the processes which may have created the patterns. In fact, given the present state of research, we seem to be in a weak position to answer questions which relate to the processes which have created the present form of international trade. Geographic research in international trade can' be examined by looking at three problem areas. A brief summary of work done in these three areas will …

Development Through The Domestication Of Animals: The Case Of The Musk Ox And The Eland, James L. Kelly
Development Through The Domestication Of Animals: The Case Of The Musk Ox And The Eland, James L. Kelly
The Geographical Bulletin
In recent years a determined effort has been made to domesticate new animals with most attention focusing on the eland, which is native to the arid and semi-arid areas of southern and eastern Africa, and the musk ox of arctic North America.1 The underlying purpose of these efforts is to develop lands that are currently either poorly used or not used at all. The natural habitats of the musk ox and the eland are areas plagued by cold temperatures or aridity. These regions have resisted man's attempts at agriculture. Even grazing of domestic livestock has been difficult because of harsh …
Learning Topographic Map Use Through Simulation, Russell L. Stubbles
Learning Topographic Map Use Through Simulation, Russell L. Stubbles
The Geographical Bulletin
A simulation game designed to facilitate learning to read and to use topographic maps was tested among sample groups of college undergraduates and high school seniors. The board game, "Natural Disaster," permits two to four students to participate in property location decisions, based on their understanding of natural hazards which are to be inferred from the topographic map's contours and locations of particular places. A randomizing procedure assigned the students to one of two treatments, the simulation game or a lecture-discussion, both of which covered the same substantive material. After pretesting, the appropriate treatments were administered to the students, and …
Military Geography: An Investigation Of Qualification, Bruce G. Graves
Military Geography: An Investigation Of Qualification, Bruce G. Graves
The Geographical Bulletin
Comprehension of the meaning of military geography is far more complex than it first appears. Traditionally military geography loosely encompasses the whole field of geographic activity required for the direction of organized military forces. The term "military" includes activities by which man performs characteristics that are generally referred to as soldierly in practice. The weight of this definition is magnified by the importance of strategy exercised at a given time. Scholars who perceive a sub-discipline as having a distinctive characteristic that is basically a sub-division of a whole field of academic study, may at first glance, see a direct relation …
The Development Of The Russian Iron And Steel Industry, James E. Rowe
The Development Of The Russian Iron And Steel Industry, James E. Rowe
The Geographical Bulletin
The original base of the Russian iron and steel industry was located near Tula which is situated in the Central Industrial region. The smelting of small deposits of local iron ore was begun with the utilization of charcoal made from the surrounding forests. A secondary region developed near Lake Onega in the northwestern section of Russia. The local availability of iron are and charcoal and a nearby market were major factors in the establishment of this early center of production. During the reign of Peter the Great in the early 18th century a considerably greater development of ferrous metallurgy took …
The Mormon State Of Deseret: A Study In Political Geography, Lawrence R. Handley
The Mormon State Of Deseret: A Study In Political Geography, Lawrence R. Handley
The Geographical Bulletin
On July 24, 1847, the vanguard of the Mormon migration reached the valley of the Great Salt Lake. By December, 1849, the Mormon population had increased to over 8,000, and was spread over 26 settlements from Ft. Bridger west to near Carson City, and from Ogden south to Manti. Within two and a half years the Mormons had established the foundation of their theo-democratic kingdom in the Great Basin. This presentation will deal with the Mormon's expansion between 1847 and 1851, and the political unit, the "territory" and "state" of Deseret, that was an attempt to claim the Great Basin …
The Political Geography Of The Marine Environment, Robert W. Smith
The Political Geography Of The Marine Environment, Robert W. Smith
The Geographical Bulletin
The paucity of research .articles by geographers on the political and planning aspects of the marine environment is evident from review of the geographical literature. It is undoubtedly true that there are some geographers who are involved at all levels of policy making in this region, but the fruits of their efforts have not been made available to a professional audience - fifteen articles in three major U.S. geographical journals in the past 16 years is not very commendable. Since 1958 (the year of the first Geneva Law of the Sea Conference), only five articles have appeared in the Annals …

Charity Begins At Home: A Case Study Of Rural Western Pennsylvania During The Great Depression, Jacob A. Battle, Colin J. Wood, Christian E. Mumpower
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
Rural Pennsylvania is often neglected when discussing the world-shaping events of the Great Depression. This study addresses a significant gap in historical research by exploring how a small-town in Pennsylvania, New Bethlehem, survived and even thrived during the Great Depression. New Bethlehem, situated in the fertile Redbank Valley, built its settlement on local resources and rural communalism. During the Depression, the townsfolk banded together through wealthy philanthropy, backyard gardens, and homegrown charity to withstand the crippling implications of the event. By examining church records, newspaper archives, and conducting oral interviews, this article reveals the resilience and resourcefulness of rural Pennsylvanian …
Windmills As Symbols Of Economic Development And Progress In West Texas From 1860 To 2011, Stacy Taylor
Windmills As Symbols Of Economic Development And Progress In West Texas From 1860 To 2011, Stacy Taylor
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
The outline of a windmill against the sky is a popular image of Texas found on many forms of media including illustrations, photographs, and other print media. How did the image of a windmill become symbolic to Texas? The purpose of this paper is to determine how and why windmills became an important symbol representing the Texas Plains. Methodology used included analysis of scientific information to explore the geography of Texas, which demonstrated why windmills were needed in West Texas. Critical analysis of journals and books were performed to determine the history of the introduction and evolving use of windmills …

Southern Rambles: Seeking A Place, Finding A Self, John Hayes
Study the South
"So, we set out from Atlanta in August 1997 on the older US Highway 19, heading south. We were seeking a South and we didn’t have a consciousness of being southern, but in a very elemental way, our consciousness had been deeply shaped by forces we were unaware of."

A Geospatial Livestock-Carrying Capacity Model (Glcc) In The Akmola Oblast, Kazakhstan, Jiaguo Qi, Zihan Lin, Mark A. Weltz, Kenneth Spaeth, Gulnaz Iskakova
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Spatial disparities in rangeland conditions across Kazakhstan complicate field-based assessments of livestock-carrying capacity (LCC), a critical metric for the country's food security and economic planning. This study developed a geospatial livestock-carrying capacity (GLCC) modeling framework to quantify LCC spatio-temporal dynamics at the Oblast level, by integrating satellite-derived data on vegetation, water resources, and terrain with in situ measurements. By providing ground-truth observations and contextual detail, field-based measurements complement remote sensing data and help to validate estimates and improve the reliability of the GLCC model. The modeling framework was successfully applied and validated in a case study in the Akmola Oblast, …

Conversation In My Parlor About Climate Change And The Call To Thoughtful Service By Lawyers With Disabilities, Gary Norman Esq. Llm
Journal of Law and Health
Pope John Paul II penned, "So much of our world seems to be in fragments, in disjointed pieces." Experts admonish that an irreparable threshold of 1.5°C for global temperatures is not a theoretical remonstrance but an imminent imperative. Is this true? This article will explore if climate change exists. I will thoughtfully respond to this question in the affirmative, exploring center-based solutions. Specifically, this article will urge that these great United States require a new generation of leaders who can embody the energy of a Brother President Theodore Roosevelt, who possesses the eloquence of President John Kennedy, and who, like …

Community-Level Analysis Of Anti-Asian Hate Crime, Jisoo Cho, Jinuk Jeong, Christopher Han-Fai Seto
Publications and Research
Motivated by the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study examines the community characteristics associated with the likelihood of their occurrence from 2020 to 2023 through interracial conflict and social disorganization perspectives. Analyzing data from the New York City Police Department and the American Community Survey across 2,198 census tracts, we find that communities with higher levels of Asian population, racial heterogeneity, and residential instability have higher odds of experiencing anti-Asian hate crime. However, concentrated disadvantage and defended neighborhoods (White, Black, and Hispanic) are not significant across all estimated models. These findings have important implications for …

Adapting To Climate Change In Semiarid Regions Via Conservation Measures: Climate-Smart Crop Rotations Of Food Legumes In Cool Seasons, Velibor Spalevic, Mohsen Janmohammadi, Naser Sabaghnia, Shuraik Kader
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The high potential of evapotranspiration, unsuitable soil conditions, irregular distribution of rainfall, and ineffective techniques of soil moisture conservation are among the limitations of semiarid regions of Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA), and they have intensified during recent decades with climate change. CWANA’s agroecosystems are fragile and highly vulnerable to the consequences of global warming and aggravation of water scarcity, and need to redefine agroclimatic zoning. Winter cereals are the predominant crops in the region of CWANA. The highest amount of cultivation is allocated to societies with dominant rainfed agriculture, which is often not economically profitable. The …
