The Métis And The Manifest Destiny Of The Canadian Northwest, Donald Holler
The Métis And The Manifest Destiny Of The Canadian Northwest, Donald Holler
The Ozark Historical Review
As the United States, hoping to pursue “Manifest Destiny,” attempted to expand until North America truly was the “American” continent, the newly formed Dominion of Canada, ever fearful of its expanding neighbor to the south, tried to cobble together a trans-continental nation and forge its own unique identity and destiny. These two competing impulses came to a head in the long neglected Métis Red River Rebellion of 1869–1870 which sealed the future of the North American continent.

Data on health equity to inform societally relevant evidence based decisions and policy making are lacking in the research literature. Observational studies have the potential to provide data on health equity. Yet, guidance on how to report health equity data and considerations in observational research is inadequate. The STROBE-Equity extension addresses this gap by providing a structured set of criteria to enhance the reporting of health equity data and considerations.

Moderated Identity Politics: Muslim Voters And Religious Depolarization In North Maluku’S 2024 Gubernatorial Election, Aji Deni, Marno Wance, Muhtar Muhtar
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study examines religious polarization in North Maluku, proposing moderated identity politics and a hybrid representation model to explain post-conflict electoral behavior. It highlights local leaders who strategically balance identity appeals with cross-group alliances, integrating structural and agential factors to advance electoral theory and offer a replicable model for mitigating identity-based conflict in plural Indonesian regions. Using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, quantitative data were first collected from 100 proportionally sampled respondents. Subsequently, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 key informants. Data triangulation, comparing survey results with interview findings, ensured consistency and strengthened the validity of the research conclusions. …
Resilience, Elapsed Time Since Exposure To Workplace Violence, And Job Satisfaction Among Emergency Nurses In The United States, Ginny Glisson Ennis
Resilience, Elapsed Time Since Exposure To Workplace Violence, And Job Satisfaction Among Emergency Nurses In The United States, Ginny Glisson Ennis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The emergency nursing profession faces a critical challenge with a declining workforce and a high prevalence of workplace violence (WPV), which negatively impacts nurse job satisfaction. This quantitative study examined the relationships among nursing resilience, time elapsed since WPV exposure, and job satisfaction among emergency nurses (ENs) in the United States. Grounded in resilience and Herzberg’s two-factor theories, this study used a cross-sectional, correlational design. A national, anonymous online survey was distributed via social media, using a sharable QR code to recruit participants. The survey consisted of a total of 52 items, and collected demographic data, and time elapsed since …

The Sea Ice For Walrus Outlook—A Network For Weather And Sea-Ice Information Sharing In The Bering Strait, Alaska, Lisa Sheffield Guy
Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)
The Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook (SIWO) is a collaborative information-sharing network that delivers weekly springtime updates on sea ice and weather conditions relevant to walrus habitat in the Bering Strait region of Alaska. Launched in 2010, SIWO shares Indigenous Knowledge from Alaska Native sea-ice experts alongside custom forecasts and imagery from the National Weather Service Alaska, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Alaska Ocean Observing System. Weekly reports incorporate community-based observations, satellite imagery, 7-day forecasts, and animated current and ice movement models to inform subsistence hunters and support maritime safety. This hybrid approach facilitates real-time communication and mutual …

The Quest For Liberation: Philosophy And The Making Of World Culture In China And The West, Chunjie Zhang
The Quest For Liberation: Philosophy And The Making Of World Culture In China And The West, Chunjie Zhang
Philosophy & Theory
Contemporary debate on cosmopolitanism routinely refers to Immanuel Kant as its intellectual origin. A group of Chinese and German-speaking thinkers in the early twentieth century, however, used classical Chinese philosophy as an alternative intellectual genealogy to reimagine ethics, politics, society, and modernity for the entire world. Their engagement with Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism broadens the scope of global intellectual history to include a non-European origin of concepts and ideas.
Due to the differences in their local crises, the Chinese and the European stories are often narrated in separate national and cultural contexts. Bridging the critical divide between China and the …

WINNER, 2024 ALDO AND JEANNE SCAGLIONE PUBLICATION AWARD FOR A MANUSCRIPT IN ITALIAN LITERARY STUDIES, MODERN LANGUAGES ASSOCIATION
Introduces a way to study migration that privileges literary analysis over and against sociological data and insists on the importance of culture in the production of political identities
This book argues that Italians first became racialized as white in São Paulo, Brazil, at the turn of the twentieth century. Whereas Italians in the United States struggled with xenophobia and were often not fully acknowledged as white, in São Paulo, due to a series of social, economic, and cultural factors, Italians became closely …

Opting Out: Over-Alerting And Warning Fatigue In The Era Of Wireless Emergency Alerts, Jeannette Sutton, Michele M. Wood
Opting Out: Over-Alerting And Warning Fatigue In The Era Of Wireless Emergency Alerts, Jeannette Sutton, Michele M. Wood
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
While warning fatigue is commonly described among emergency management practitioners as a problem due to over-alerting, which leads to opting out, there has been limited research to define these concepts in a systematic manner that can inform policymaking around public alerting strategies, especially as they relate to Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). In this study, we draw from semi-structured interviews with emergency managers and open-ended responses from surveys with emergency managers and members of the public, to develop definitions of “over-alerting” and “warning fatigue” and to identify the conditions that cause the public to “opt out” of WEA messages. We conduct …

The Malditas, The Filipinas, And The Azkals: A Socio-Onomastic Examination Of Nicknames Used For The Philippine Women’S And Men’S National Football Teams, Satwinder Rehal, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon
Department of Communication Faculty Publications
Nicknames in sports can serve a wide range of social and semantic functions. Assigning nicknames to athletes and teams can allow fans to identify with them. Such names can also become symbolic resources that fans and teams turn to when asserting their identity. Nicknames in sports come to convey varied meanings and interpretations understood within a set of contextual properties. This paper fills an empirical gap and investigates nicknames of national sports teams used in Southeast Asia. The investigative focus is on the nicknames of the Philippines men’s and women’s national football teams. Employing Leslie and Skipper’s socio-onomastic framework, this …
Abundance Strategies Should Promote Abundant Jobs In Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik
Abundance Strategies Should Promote Abundant Jobs In Distressed Places, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
A prominent recent policy debate is about “abundance policies”: policies to make it easier to build housing or infrastructure, deliver government services more quickly and more efficiently, and expedite the public funding of the most innovative and socially impactful research. In this essay, I argue that abundance advocates often mistakenly ignore or have a negative attitude toward “place-based policies.” These place-based policies would seek to increase employment rates, particularly in good jobs, in two types of distressed places that lack abundant job opportunities: distressed local labor markets and distressed neighborhoods. Both the goals and means of place-based policies fit into …
Introduction To The Special Section On Earthquakes In Slowly Deforming Mountain Belts And The High Atlas Earthquake Of 8 September 2023, Fida Medina, Youssef Timoulali, Mustapha Meghraoui, Sarah Boulton, Eric Fielding
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Earthquakes in slowly deforming mountain belts result from low‐tectonic loading and occur on individual fault segments. Although most of the significant seismic strain rate concentrates along the plate boundaries, large earthquakes with may still be generated along faults in regions at a distance (≫100 km) from plate boundaries. Intraplate regions, or continental interiors, exhibit active deformation characterized by relatively low tectonic and seismic strain rates (<5 mm/yr; Johnston, 1996), consistent with geodetic strain rates and models of plate motions that predict comparable velocities (Kreemer et al., 2014). Active faults in continental interiors...
Make It Pink: Superman, Pink Kryptonite, And Fandom, Tom Ue, Kristofer Starzomski-Wilson
Make It Pink: Superman, Pink Kryptonite, And Fandom, Tom Ue, Kristofer Starzomski-Wilson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper explores several representations of pink kryptonite. In Doug Murphy’s animated short film True Colors (2017), Superman (Jason J. Lewis) transforms into a woman when he’s exposed to this substance. This short, as we have shown elsewhere (2025), offers a useful lens for examining the perpetuation and the critique of gender stereotypes in superhero media: Superman may be equally capable regardless of his sex, but the film pokes fun at, rather than celebrates, his transformation. Pink kryptonite rarely appears in the canon. A single panel in Supergirl (2003) has received perhaps the most sustained attention. Tom Ue’s archival work …
Manatees In Hot Water: How The Florida Manatee Became Dependent On Power Plant Warm Water Outfalls, Michaela Morris
Manatees In Hot Water: How The Florida Manatee Became Dependent On Power Plant Warm Water Outfalls, Michaela Morris
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
Each winter in Florida, thousands of manatees gather in the warm water outflows of power plants. These refuges play a crucial role for the Florida manatee: when ocean temperatures drop, manatees shelter at these artificial sources to survive. But in recent years, thousands of manatees wintering at the Florida Power & Light Company’s Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center have died. The reason? Seagrass beds––a primary food source for manatees––are vanishing, killed off by pollution from agricultural, industrial, and residential sources.
This Article documents the historical, political, and regulatory conditions that led to manatees’ reliance on power plants. First, the political …
