Tenacious Resins And Residues: Oil Propaganda In Architectural Digest During The Energy Crises Of The 1970s, Banafsheh Mohammadi
The Goose
Architectural Digest was first published in 1920 by John C. Brasfield, a California-based publisher. In 1933, the magazine was purchased by Condé Nast and has since become a popular design magazine, particularly in North America, known for its visually vibrant and abundant advertisements. Car advertisements are among the most recurring ads featured in the magazine. Through an archival investigation of Architectural Digest magazines from 1973 to 1983, I investigate how, if at all, car advertisements in the magazine reflected the 1973 and 1979 oil crises.
The 1979 global energy crisis was a period of high energy prices and supply …

Video Poem: What Remains, Edie Steiner
The Goose
What Remainsis a three-minute poetry film I created to address the issue of “becoming-with” (Wright 2014). In the film, I document two large-scale, public-art spectacles I witnessed in Toronto, as historical markers of collective becoming-with. I contrast super-8mm film footage of the 1984 outdoor public performance “Shibola” at the Bell Trinity Square building in Toronto, by the Japanese Butoh dance group Sankai Juku, with digital video of “A Tribute to Toronto,” Judy Chicago’s 2022 Smoke Sculpture on the Toronto waterfront. I then intercut these images with digital recordings of ruins and relics, both ancient and modern, merging as …

The Chicxulub impact is the most likely cause of the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary (KPB) mass extinction and the only impact event in Earth's history with a globally traceable ejecta bed. Although the impact spherules are thought to represent molten or vaporized material, precise genesis and transport mechanisms remain underconstrained. Here, we show that the morphology, size, internal structure, and distribution of the spherules within the KPB deposits are related to origin and transport processes. The study of thousands of spherules from KPB deposits in Colombia, the USA, and Spain has revealed the presence of three fractions related to three different distribution …

Promoting Equity: Embracing Food Justice In The Transformation Of The Food Systems For Bipoc Communities, Frank Yeboah Adusei
Journal of Extension
The food justice movement addresses systemic food inequities impacting BIPOC communities, rooted in civil rights and environmental justice movements. It advocates for fair access to culturally relevant food, combating food deserts, and promoting food sovereignty. Recognizing intersectionality, it emphasizes collaboration to dismantle systemic barriers. This study aims to understand BIPOC communities' challenges and effective strategies, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts for lasting systemic change. Extension professionals face challenges but can contribute through equity-focused strategies, community engagement, and partnerships, advancing food justice and fostering inclusive food systems.

Beer And Biology, A Perfect Pairing: Using Beer To Spread Awareness About Invasive Species, Samuel Nutile, Adam Simpson, Sara Stahlman, Lynne E. Beaty
Journal of Extension
Managing the spread of introduced invasive species relies on educating recreationists that currently or potentially harbor such species. By partnering with a local brewery, we developed the Lagers for Lakes Draft Series to facilitate outreach about aquatic invasive species in Erie, Pennsylvania. To date, Lagers for Lakes drafts and associated launch events have reached over 230 individuals and increased awareness of invasive species by 86%. With the materials provided here and the lessons learned from these events, we hope similar outreach efforts can be developed elsewhere to educate and minimize the spread of invasive species.

This year was another exciting one for the Alpha Chapter. Duri ng National Geography Awareness Week we sold Tshirts and went on a wild weekend canoe and camping trip to Turkey Run in Indiana. The weather and fall colors were beautiful, hiking was fun, and the river was low, making a wet run for 5 out of 6 canoes. In November, the members took an Indianapolis trip to see an ice hockey game and to sightsee.

Machine Learning Model For Predicting Net Environmental Effects, Sellappan Palaniappan, Rajasvaran Logeswaran, Shapla Khanam, Zhang Yujiao
Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
Environmental sustainability is a global challenge in the face of increasing incidences of disasters affecting communities worldwide. This requires predicting net environmental effects accurately. While various approaches exist, we need more sophisticated prediction models that account for both environmental and social factors. This study presents a proof-of-concept machine learning model for predicting net environmental effects using synthetic data. We developed a multiple linear regression model incorporating nine key features: renewable energy usage, carbon emissions, air quality index, water usage, biodiversity impact, land use, public awareness, and environmental attitudes. We generated a synthetic dataset of 1000 samples using probability distributions and …

Liu-Type Estimator In Inverse Gaussian Regression Model Based On (R-(K-D)) Class Estimator, Zeina Ameer Hadied, Oday Esam Al-Saqal, Zakariya Yahya Algamal
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
When multicollinearity arises in the inverse Gaussian regression (IGR), there is a substantially unstable variance in the maximum likelihood estimator. Based on the (r-(k-d)) class estimation method, we present a novel Liu-type estimator in the IGR model in this study. The study examines the e ectiveness of the suggested estimator and draws comparisons with alternative estimators. Based on simulation and real data results, the suggested estimate performs better than the other estimators in terms of mean squared error.

Pom Poko: When Nature Speaks Out Against Urbanization, Sabrina Huynh
CAFE Symposium 2025
Pom Poko highlights the correlation between the survival of nature and the progress of humanity. Therefore, by showing different dynamic relationships like Gonta’s aggressive way of fighting against or peaceful co-existence of Shoukichi, Pom Poko suggests viewers may feel that humans should find a way to live harmoniously with the environment.

A Recycling Case Study: Gettysburg College, Luke Francek
CAFE Symposium 2025
My project addresses the issue of non-recyclable Van Doren reed cases at Gettysburg College and proposes a community-based solution to mitigate waste. It outlines the environmental impact of improperly handled reed cases, presents research on reed usage and material recyclability, and proposes two initiatives: an education campaign and a dedicated collection receptacle for proper disposal. The proposal emphasizes collaboration with faculty, localized recycling efforts, and the potential for broader replication in other communities.

Novel Biomarkers Of Fetal And Neonatal Environmental Exposure, Effect And Susceptibility, Cynthia F. Bearer
Faculty Scholarship
Abstract: Rapid advancements in science and technology have allowed medical providers to treat wider ranges of diseases with safer and more effective therapies than ever before. One of the areas of health that has been consistently understudied, however, is one that affects us all: environmental health or the effects that the chemicals we are exposed to every day have on our acute and chronic health. This effect can be exacerbated during and shortly after pregnancy, as an individual exposure is often shared by both the mother and the fetus/neonate. The diagnosis and monitoring of chemical exposure can be quite challenging, …
Religious Moral Suasion And Material Support For The Environmental Justice Movement, Sarah Elizabeth Nahar
Religious Moral Suasion And Material Support For The Environmental Justice Movement, Sarah Elizabeth Nahar
International Journal on Responsibility
The Environmental Justice (EJ) movement in the United States is comprised of diverse groups of people with a variety of environmental grievances and interests coming together to obtain equal distribution of pollution burdens across communities, reduce environmental hazards, and ensure fair enforcement of laws and policies meant to safeguard the environment for all. The 17 Principles of Environmental Justice developed in 1991 at the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit remains a touchstone document today. In addition to Indigenous and Black leadership, religious communities also made the Summit possible. Religious adherents and institutions have always influenced the movement …

Understanding how the traits of lineages are related to diversification is key for elucidating the origin of variation in species richness. Here, we test whether traits are related to species richness among lineages of trees from all major biogeographical settings of the lowland wet tropics. We explore whether variation in mortality rate, breeding system and maximum diameter are related to species richness, either directly or via associations with range size, among 463 genera that contain wet tropical forest trees. For Amazonian genera, we also explore whether traits are related to species richness via variation among genera in mean species-level range …

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair
The Geographical Bulletin
First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

The soil is the primary environmental reservoir for many parasites transmitted to humans that cause disease. Our environmental study used a multiparallel real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay to detect parasite DNA in soil collected from the outdoor built environments of 34 houses in rural Yucatan, Mexico. The number of positive houses (n, %) per parasite species was 18 (53%) for Acanthamoeba spp.; four (12%) for Blastocystis spp. and Ascaris lumbricoides; three (9%) for Toxocara canis; and one (3%) for Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris trichiura, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia intestinalis. No DNA from Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Toxocara cati, or Cryptosporidium …
