An Analysis Of Doctor Of Philosophy Time-To-Degree Predictors, Christian A. Decle Jan 2025

An Analysis Of Doctor Of Philosophy Time-To-Degree Predictors, Christian A. Decle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Doctoral-granting institutions invest time and resources to support the success of their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students. Despite these efforts, doctoral attrition rates remain high. One measure used to understand doctoral attrition and completion rates is time-to-degree (TTD). In 2020, the median TTD from the start of graduate school increased to 7.5 years (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics [NCSES], 2020b), highlighting the need for continued analysis of factors affecting TTD. This study used data from the 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED; NCSES, 2021a) to provide a more recent analysis of the relationship between TTD and both student …

Mired In Meyer'S Mischief A Century After Fabrication Of Constitutional Parents' Rights, James G. Dwyer Jan 2025

Mired In Meyer'S Mischief A Century After Fabrication Of Constitutional Parents' Rights, James G. Dwyer

The seminal Supreme Court decisions Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of Sisters, now commemorated on their centenary anniversary, are odd doctrinal ducks. They are both still routinely cited as the foundation for ascribing to persons on whom the state has conferred legal parent status a right under the Fourteenth Amendment Due Process Clause of the United States Constitution. (According to Westlaw, judicial citation count for Meyer now nears 3000, and secondary-source citations have surpassed 7000.) It is a constitutional right to force states to confer on them greater legal power than the state is otherwise inclined to …

Restructuring Ruritania: Bankruptcy, Sovereign Debt, And The Equity Receivership, Nathan B. Oman Jan 2025

Restructuring Ruritania: Bankruptcy, Sovereign Debt, And The Equity Receivership, Nathan B. Oman

Faculty Publications

The traditional legal story of sovereign restructuring goes something like this: foreign governments cannot file for bankruptcy under domestic law. When faced with the need to restructure unsustainable debts, they must negotiate with each of their creditors. Since the late 1980s, private debt has been held by increasingly diverse and dispersed bondholders, making renegotiation more difficult. Defaulting debtors face two basic problems: first, they have no process analogous to the automatic stay in bankruptcy, which can pause litigation by creditors and buy time for an orderly reorganization; second, and more importantly, they have no process analogous to the cramdown provisions …

Lower court judges across the country are struggling to manage the Supreme Court’s new “history and tradition” test that applies to Second Amendment challenges. This Article articulates one fundamental reason for the struggle: nobody is quite sure what a judge is actually doing when she evaluates claims about what happened in the past. Is it traditional legal reasoning— weighing evidence and looking for patterns? Is it fact-finding of the sort we think expert historians should testify about—conveying to a trial judge the best evidence we have about the purpose of colonial gun laws? Or is it a different sort of …

More than 470 million people globally are infected with the hookworms Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Necator americanus, resulting in an annual loss of 2.1 to 4 million disability-adjusted-life-years. Current infection management approaches are limited by modest drug efficacy, the costs associated with frequent mass drug administration campaigns, and the risk of reinfection and burgeoning drug resistance. Subunit vaccines based on proteins excreted and secreted (ES) by hookworms that reduce worm numbers and associated disease burden are a promising management strategy to overcome these limitations. However, studies on the ES proteomes of hookworms have mainly described proteins from the adult life stage …

Whole transcriptome sequencing (WTS/ RNA-Seq) is a ubiquitous tool for investigating cancer biology. RNA isolated from frozen sources limits possible studies for analysis of associations with phenotypes or clinical variables requiring long-term follow-up. Although good correlations are reported in RNA-Seq data from paired frozen and formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples, uncertainties regarding RNA quality, methods of extraction, and data reliability are hurdles to utilization of archival samples. We compared three different platforms for performing RNA-seq using archival FFPE oropharyngeal squamous carcinoma (OPSCC) specimens stored up to 20 years, as part of an investigation of transcriptional profiles related to health …

Background: Neurofibromas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors most associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1 ). NF1 is an autosomal dominant disorder resulting from mutations in the NF1 gene located on chromosome 17. While neurofibromas frequently occur in cutaneous or plexiform forms, neurofibromas arising from the sympathetic plexus of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are rare. Only one case of an intracranial sympathetic plexus neurofibroma has been reported in the literature to date. Since most nerve sheath tumors arising from this region are schwannomas, and given the intimate association with the Internal carotid artery (ICA) and surrounding neurovascular structures of …

The disruption of ferroptosis, an emerging form of programmed cell death, is crucial in the development and aggressiveness of tumors. Meanwhile, the mechanisms and treatments that control ferroptosis in neuroblastoma (NB), a prevalent extracranial cancer in children, are still unknown. In this study, forkhead box C1 (FOXC1) and O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) are identified as regulators of asparagine- and alanine-mediated ferroptosis repression in NB. Mechanistically, OGT facilitates FOXC1 stabilization via inducing O-GlcNAcylation in liquid condensates to increase the expression of asparagine synthetase (ASNS) and glutamate pyruvate transaminase 2 (GPT2), resulting in asparagine and alanine biogenesis, and subsequent …

RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) is an essential assay for studying transcriptome profiling. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) comprises more than 80-90% of total cellular RNA; efficient removal is essential for accurately capturing transcriptomes, particularly to sequence low-abundance mRNAs. Inefficient rRNA removal during library preparation can result from variations in sample quality, preparation methods, and handling. Estimating rRNA content in RNA-Seq libraries pre-sequencing is therefore challenging due to the absence of a reliable and cost-effective assessment method. This study addresses the issue by introducing a scalable real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) based assay targeting human 18S rRNA to evaluate rRNA depletion efficiency of …
