School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

Christ SaveryGrassroots Playwriting: Practice-led research exploring the Impact of Producing Historical Verse Drama for a local CommunityOver the past thirty years, Practice as Research has contributed to a deeper understanding of theatre ecology, particularly in relation to the complexities and nuances of grassroots community theatre. This study builds upon this body of knowledge by addressing the question: How can the creation and performance of a historical verse drama by a self-producing grassroots playwright serve as a catalyst for community engagement? Opening Spaces For The Emergence Of Community Economy Initiatives, Timothy Crabtree Jan 2025

Opening Spaces For The Emergence Of Community Economy Initiatives, Timothy Crabtree

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

The background to the thesis is the crisis of affordable housing in the UK, and the emergence of community housing initiatives as a response. There are enabling organisations which provide support, but despite an increasing recognition of the contribution that housing makes to carbon emissions, affordability rather than sustainability remains the primary focus. In particular, the use of natural materials with low embodied carbon is often dismissed as unaffordable. The thesis therefore explores how a community housing enabling organisation might reconcile the apparently conflicting aims of affordability and sustainability. There is a gap in research into this area, in particular …

Above And Below The Horizon: A Practice-Led Investigation Into Liminal Thresholds Of Bodies Of Water, Rachael Allain

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This thesis contributes to the debate on the interactions between art, science, and phenomenological experience, whilst offering new possibilities for investigation in this interdisciplinary field. The research investigated thresholds of the aquatic horizon; the outline in the distance where sky and water appear to coalesce. Artistic practice and critical discourse challenged and interrogated the intersection between analogue and digital, still and moving technologies, revealing aspects of the physical and conceptual horizons within and beyond the visible light spectrum. A range of theoretical concepts reconfigured my readings and interpretations of the phases of experience, through liminality and phenomenology. This provided a …

The Resistant Body In Sound: Cripping Music Creation Through Technology, Embodiment, And Disability Philosophy, Amble Ysgawen-Skuse Jan 2025

The Resistant Body In Sound: Cripping Music Creation Through Technology, Embodiment, And Disability Philosophy, Amble Ysgawen-Skuse

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

We are currently in a period where many music organisations are beginning to engage with disabled artists as a part of their diversity agenda. However, practice seems limited to questions of physical access to spaces and asks little around the philosophies of disability and how that might change the way that we think about working with disabled creatives. If issues of physical access are all that are taken into consideration we risk creating projects which embed ableists assumptions and practices into our disabled music making, which results in negative experiences for disabled artists. In order to make the progression of …

Understanding Institutional Factors That Hinder Black Students’ Ability To Persist At Community Colleges, Tadael Emiru

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges face a significant challenge with high attrition rates, which disproportionately impact Black students compared to other student groups. Hope Community Colleges reflect this trend, with a notable percentage of students dropping out before achieving their academic goals. The implications of this high dropout rate extend beyond individual students, affecting the local, state, and national economies.

Although existing research primarily focuses on students’ personal characteristics that influence their ability to stay in college, there is a noticeable gap in understanding the institutional factors that negatively affect student persistence, particularly for Black students in community colleges. This study sought to …

From Street Codes To School Codes: Transformative Educational Intervention For Gang Affiliated Student. An Active Research Study, Alexandra Saldivar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Gang-affiliated youth face significant challenges in educational and community settings, often resulting in lower graduation rates, limited career opportunities, and an increased risk for behavioral problems. While gang activity on school campuses has increased in recent years, there is limited research and little effort specifically tailored to meet the needs of this vulnerable population. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the WhyTry intervention, a resilience-focused program designed for at-risk populations, modified with additional counseling and a gang-intervention emphasis to address the unique challenges gang-affiliated students face. The study explores whether the modified WhyTry program can improve academic performance, …

Introduction: People with intellectual disability (PwID) are 2% of the UK population. Constipation and bowel movement (BM) problems (diarrhoea/faecal incontinence etc.) affects over a third of PwID and is a serious cause of morbidity and mortality. Pw ID rely heavily on outside support (family/professional carers/healthcare professionals), many of whom are ignorant to bowel related harms. There is significant stigma to discuss BM particularly constipation. Serious Games (SG) are increasingly used for education of health needs. This review examines if game-based technology can assist improving knowledge and reducing stigma of BM problems particularly constipation. Objective: To identify and gain evidence of …

From Attention To Action: Advancing Inclusivity In The Landscape Of Anatomy Education, Siobhan M. Moyes, Lily Evans, Katie Snow, Aiden Jayanth

Peninsula Medical School

Conversations about inclusivity in anatomy education are at a critical juncture. While the need for a more equitable discipline is widely recognised, significant challenges remain. As this project aimed to reimagine what a truly inclusive learning experience could like and how it might be best achieved, an inclusive approach to research methodology was essential to ensure robust and representative results. Due to the paucity in anatomical literature on this topic, the authors applied concepts from sociological research methodology and innovative methods of demographic data collection to their own discipline.

The study utilised questionnaires and focus groups to collect diverse data …

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic deprivation is linked to poorer outcomes in many cancers, however the impact of social deprivation on survival in resectable pancreatic and other peri-ampullary cancers appears mixed. Moreover, no studies consider the impact of social deprivation on diagnostic pathway length.

METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study of adults with suspected periampullary cancer undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy in England. Following surgery, patients were stratified by cancer type (PDAC, duodenal cancer, cholangiocarcinoma and ampullary cancer) and the impact of social deprivation (IMD deprivation quintiles) upon short-term survival and diagnostic pathway length analysed.

RESULTS: 648 patients from England with social deprivation data were identified, …
