Determining Space Requirements For Small And Sick Newborns And Their Mothers In Health Facilities: A Systematic Review, Natalie Strobel, Georgia Whisson, Derek Swe, Rajesh Mehta, Amy Budrikis, Karen Edmond

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background There are currently no World Health Organization and United Nations Children Fund benchmarks or ‘norms’ for scaling up small and sick newborn (SSN) service delivery in health facilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Specifically, there is limited evidence on optimal bed space requirements in SSN units such as special care nurseries and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Through this systematic review, we aimed to gather evidence on the optimal space requirements needed for SSNs and their mothers in health facilities, particularly at level 2 district hospitals. Methods We included simulation, experimental, and observational studies, as well as guidelines …

Motivation Matters: The Positive Influence Of Parental Involvement On Children’S Writing Outcome, Bronte Kelso-Marsh, Anabela Abreu Malpique, Helen Davis, Debora Similieana Valcan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest parental involvement in general education is beneficial for children’s educational outcomes and that motivational factors may contribute to explaining parental involvement in children’s education. Few studies, however, have examined the role of parental involvement in children’s writing outcomes and, to our knowledge, none has investigated the motivations of Parents/Carers to support their children’s writing development in the first place. In this study, we aimed to address this gap by measuring Parents'/Carers' autonomous and controlled motivations for supporting their children’s writing at home and their engagement in writing activities with their children, and then assessing …

Supporting People Bereaved By Suicide In The South West Region Of Western Australia: Report, Colleen M. Carlon Jan 2025

Supporting People Bereaved By Suicide In The South West Region Of Western Australia: Report, Colleen M. Carlon

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper reports on the practices of service providers in working with people and communities bereaved by suicide in regional contexts. For people bereaved by suicide experiences of grief, trauma and stigma and the questioning of why someone has died create a complex mix of need and emotion that can leave people vulnerable to complicated grief and poor physical and mental health. These effects may also be exacerbated by stigma in social and communal contexts. As such experiences of suicide grief are different to other forms of grief and loss, effectively supporting people and communities bereaved by suicide requires knowledge …

Pfedrag: A Personalized Federated Retrieval-Augmented Generation System With Depth-Adaptive Tiered Embedding Tuning, Hangyu He, Xin Yuan, Kai Wu, Ren Ping Liu, Wei Ni Jan 2025

Pfedrag: A Personalized Federated Retrieval-Augmented Generation System With Depth-Adaptive Tiered Embedding Tuning, Hangyu He, Xin Yuan, Kai Wu, Ren Ping Liu, Wei Ni

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Large Language Models (LLMs) can undergo hallucinations in specialized domains, and standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) often falters due to general-purpose embeddings ill-suited for domain-specific terminology. Though domain-specific fine-tuning enhances retrieval, centralizing data introduces privacy risks. The use of federated learning (FL) can alleviate this to some extent, but faces challenges of data heterogeneity, poor personalization, and expensive training data generation. We propose pFedRAG, a novel Personalized Federated RAG framework, which enables efficient collaborative fine-tuning of embedding models to address these challenges. The key contribution is a new Depth-Adaptive Tiered Embedding (DATE) architecture, which comprises a Global Shared Layer, combined using …

The Dark Side Of International Cooperation: Indifference And The Psychosocial Dynamics Of Cooperative Deterrence, Jamal Barnes

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

States are increasingly resorting to international cooperative agreements to deter migrants and refugees from irregularly arriving at their borders. Although scholars have shown how these cooperative deterrence policies are undermining important refugee and human rights protections, making migration journeys more dangerous, and securitizing and criminalizing people on the move, what has not been adequately examined is how these cooperative arrangements can bring about normative changes that produce indifference to the suffering of refugees and migrants. This article examines the psychosocial dynamics of cooperative deterrence policies to show how the social processes of authorization, routinization, evasion of responsibility, and dehumanization weaken …
