Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of using augmented reality (Metaverse) technology on the academic achievement in mathematics among fifth-grade students with learning difficulties in the Southern Al-Mazar district. An experimental approach was employed, utilizing an application based on augmented reality to teach a mathematics unit, along with an achievement test to evaluate the treatment's effects. A purposive sample of 60 male and female students with learning difficulties was used. After implementing the measurement tools during the academic year 2022/2023, where validity and reliability were verified through appropriate methods, statistically significant differences were observed between the means of the …

The Emergence Of Worship And Religion In The Neolithic Period: Direct And Indirect Evidence From Moẓa (Motza), Hamoudi Khalaily, Anna Eirikh-Rose, Ianir Milevski
The Emergence Of Worship And Religion In The Neolithic Period: Direct And Indirect Evidence From Moẓa (Motza), Hamoudi Khalaily, Anna Eirikh-Rose, Ianir Milevski
'Atiqot
Evidence of worship and religion in the form of architectural remains is rather scanty before the shift in human behavior, from hunter-gatherers to sedentary communities, and the emergence of permanent settlements. Communal and ritual structures first appeared in the Natufian culture (12,500–9400 BCE) and expanded during the Neolithic period (9400–5300 BCE), alongside the treatment of burials linked to ritual related to ancestor worship. The excavations at Motza’s Final PPNB (7100–6700 BCE) layer exposed many non-residential structures, some presumably used for worship and ritual. Some burials, including the one interpreted here as a shaman burial, included objects of symbolic importance. Cultic …

Some Notes On The (Post) Modern Philippine Historical Novel In English, Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Compared to the Philippine short story in English, the Philippine novel in English was slow to develop. Some critics attributed this to the pressure to write only “big novels,” i.e., historical novels, following in the footsteps of Jose Rizal. Bienvenido Lumbera opined that Filipino writers in English could not produce this kind of narrative because of their alienation from that part of the national experience that antedated the literary use of English. The exceptions to this were F. Sionil Jose and Linda Ty-Casper, who, in the 1960s, were already producing multiple historical novels in the realist style. By the 1980s …

Rereading Nick Joaquin As A Devil’S Advocate “La Naval De Manila” (1943) In Context, Luisa L. Gomez
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Nick Joaquin characterized himself as a “devil’s advocate” for taking contrarian positions in Philippine cultural history. His early essay “ La Naval de Manila” is taken as an example of such. A re-examination of the essay within its original context of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, however, reveals that Joaquin’s early historical imagination must be understood less as an act of rebellion and more as a product of negotiation. It navigates multiple audiences and overlapping empires—the Spanish past it venerates, the American period whose language it uses, and the Japanese present that enabled its publication. Its power lies not …

Pope Francis On Forced Migration: A Pastoral Of Mercy And Its Relevance In The Indonesian Context, Alexander Hendra Dwi Asmara, Martinus Dam Febrianto
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
Dealing with refugees, was the late Pope Francis’ legacy, during his pontificate, both as the leader of the Catholic Church and a global figure. This article reviews Francis’ pastoral approach of mercy, especially in his concern and advocacy for migrants and refugees, as expressed through his gestures, statements, thoughts, proposals, and policies. Along with issues of global inequality and ecological damage, Francis believed that forced migration can only be addressed through joint efforts based on recognizing human dignity, solidarity, the need for participation, as well as connectivity and inclusivity that encompasses the entire human family. This article then highlights the …

Ethical Attitudes Toward Taxes In The U.S.: Changes Over 20 Years And Demographic Differences, Donald L. Ariail, Dennis R. Lassila, Anita Reed, Lawrence Murphy Smith
Florida Tax Review
This study examines ethical attitudes toward taxation in the United States (U.S.). The U.S. system, as in many other countries, relies on voluntary compliance, where taxpayers calculate their own taxes due. Thus, ethicality of taxpayers is of critical importance. This study updates prior research on taxpayer ethical attitudes, such as comfort level with tax evasion, views on punishment for tax evasion and perspectives on civic duty to pay a fair share of taxes. A comparison is made with a benchmark study of 20 years ago. In addition, a demographic analysis is provided of current taxpayer ethical attitudes based on: age, …

In The News!: “Teatro Filipino,” “Artista Filipina,” “Piano Filipino”: Semantic Birthings Of A Nascent Identity In Music, Ma. Patricia Brillantes Silvestre
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
The final decade of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of a visible, palpable self-consciousness with the expansion of the formerly denigrating nomenclature ‘Filipino’ (from its original criollo designation) to encompass the mestizo and indio. This resulted from a uniquely potent brew of socio-political and economic factors that boiled over in this period to trigger the first stirrings of nationalism. The newspaper as, in the words of Roland Barthes, “social space” h ad chronicled t he shift in the term’s usage, as explored in the journalism on music—from a mere geographic denotation of the colonized native from las islas Filipinas …

Composing With Theory: Considerations For Teaching Novice Qualitative Researchers, Janie Copple, Kathryn Roulston
The Qualitative Report
Newcomers to qualitative research are frequently overwhelmed by the range of theories, methodologies, and concepts that qualitative researchers use. This article provides ideas for instructors working with novice qualitative researchers who are beginning to engage with theoretical frameworks used in qualitative research traditions. These practical strategies can assist students navigating challenges commonly encountered in the design and conduct of a first qualitative study. Strategies include developing understandings of disciplinary traditions within which a study will be situated, identifying a phenomenon of interest, defining disciplinary and theoretical terminology, reading deeply, articulating a theoretical perspective, and writing up findings. Through integrating these …
Migration, Trauma, And Tweeback: Perspectives On Russian Mennonite Identity In Elina Penner’S Novel Nachtbeeren, Berit Jany
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, a group of about 2.5 million Russia Germans immigrated to Germany, benefiting from the German law that recognizes citizenship to ethnic Germans who arrived in the territory as late ethnic Germans resettlers. Including their children, this subset of Germany’s population now numbers about 3.5 million, and about 350.000 Russia Germans have a Mennonite background. Of the 500.000 Plautdietsch-speaking people worldwide, about 200,000 of them live in Germany. In her debut novel, Nachtbeeren, the author Elina Penner illuminates the everyday life of German Mennonites from the Soviet Union and the successor …

‘We Wish To Keep A Wall Of Reserve’: Modesty Practice And Discourse Within Old Order Amish And Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Communities, Rivka Neriya Ben-Shahar
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This study advances our understanding of modesty practices within religious groups by examining mixed-gender groups among Old Order Amish in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel. Through ethnographic participant observation and semi-structured interviews, my research addresses three questions central to understanding modesty practices: How do members of these religious bodies define and enforce acceptable practices of modesty and body management in mixed-gender settings? What mechanisms transmit written and unwritten rules within these groups? And how do religious leaders and texts shape modesty discourse and practices? Drawing on Hobsbawm’s differentiation between old and invented traditions, this comparative analysis reveals …
