Secure Data Relay In Federated Digital Twins Of Iot-Enabled Smart Interconnected Factories, Anusha Vangala, Jack Wyeth, Ashok Kumar Das, Sajal K. Das
Secure Data Relay In Federated Digital Twins Of Iot-Enabled Smart Interconnected Factories, Anusha Vangala, Jack Wyeth, Ashok Kumar Das, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Smart interconnected factories allow manufacturing units from physically distanced factory sites to communicate classified information needed for additive manufacturing. Each factory has interconnected digital twins of their equipment autonomously managed by a Point-of-Contact digital twin creating a hierarchical system with federated digital twins. The data sharing between the factories must be directed through an edge node responsible for managing multiple factories. We proposed a novel lightweight protocol to prevent the leakage of classified information at any nodes other than the origin and destination digital twins. It leverages elliptic curve cryptography to design a proxy re-encryption scheme with the edge node …

Content Subversion Against 1 Information-Based Systems, Junjie Xiong, Ian Markwood, Dakun Shen, Yao Liu, Zhuo Lu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a novel class of content subversion attacks against information-based services, causing documents to appear to humans dissimilar to the underlying content extracted by information-based services. We demonstrate the significant impact of these attacks on real-world systems through five distinct variants. Our first attack allows academic paper writers and reviewers to collude via subverting the automatic reviewer assignment systems in current use by academic conferences including INFOCOM, which we reproduced. Our second attack renders ineffective plagiarism detection software, particularly Turnitin, targeting specific small plagiarism similarity scores to appear natural and evade detection. In our third attack, we place masked …

Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training across distributed clients while preserving data privacy, but its deployment on resource-constrained devices is hindered by high communication overhead, inefficient energy usage, and poor convergence under non-IID data distributions. To address these challenges, we propose GRACE-FL: a Green Resource-Aware Communication-Efficient Federated Learning framework that explicitly incorporates device energy capacity into training. Each client adapts its learning rate, number of local epochs, and gradient quantization bit-width based on its available energy, allowing high-capacity devices to sustain more intensive training while low-capacity devices operate with lighter configurations. A novel energy-weighted aggregation strategy ensures that clients …
Alertble: Alert Workzone Hazards Using Hybrid Filtering And Machine-Learning-Enabled Ble, Samuel Akinyede, Sejun Song
Alertble: Alert Workzone Hazards Using Hybrid Filtering And Machine-Learning-Enabled Ble, Samuel Akinyede, Sejun Song
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Collision hazard detection in industrial work zones faces challenges from signal instability, mobility-induced fluctuations, and nonline-of-sight (NLOS) conditions. While Bluetooth low energy (BLE) offers cost-effective proximity sensing, its received signal strength indicator (RSSI) variability - fluctuating by ±10 dBm even at fixed distances - limits reliability in safety-critical applications. This article presents AlertBLE, a hybrid BLE-based hazard detection system that combines extended Kalman filter (EKF) and adaptive moving average (AMA) algorithms to achieve up to 94% RSSI variance reduction in static NLOS conditions. The system introduces speed-aware safety thresholds based on reaction time and braking distance models, dynamically expanding hazard …
The Kincare Craze In Child Protection: Romanticism, Subterfuge, And Racial Separatism, James G. Dwyer
The Kincare Craze In Child Protection: Romanticism, Subterfuge, And Racial Separatism, James G. Dwyer
FIU Law Review
A deluge of federal and state legislation in recent years aims to channel maltreated children removed from parents’ custody into kin placements, responding to advocates for parents who claim this is categorically better for children than entering or remaining in foster care with biologically unrelated caregivers. The claim has romantic appeal, sufficient to beguile legislators. But the research on outcomes for children in different post-removal placements does not support it. In reality, motivations other than child welfare underlie the advocacy for this legislation. The core aim is to evade federal child-welfare mandates adopted in the 1990s and long condemned by …
Clarifying Concreteness: Statutory Grants Of Standing After Spokeo And Transunion, Naomi Eid
Clarifying Concreteness: Statutory Grants Of Standing After Spokeo And Transunion, Naomi Eid
FIU Law Review
Article III limits the federal judicial power to deciding “cases” and “controversies,” demanding that a plaintiff suffer real, concrete, de facto harm to sue in federal court. In Spokeo and TransUnion, the Supreme Court clarified the outer limits of concreteness by making clear to plaintiffs that an injury in law is not an injury in fact. The Court largely grounded the decisions in the separation of powers, setting a tone that appears less deferential to Congress in its creation of statutory rights of action. A plaintiff does not automatically satisfy the injury-in-fact requirement whenever Congress grants a right and purports …
Should Hate Speech Be Criminalized? Lessons From The Canadian Experience In R V. Zundel And R V. Keegstra, Kenneth Grad
Should Hate Speech Be Criminalized? Lessons From The Canadian Experience In R V. Zundel And R V. Keegstra, Kenneth Grad
FIU Law Review
There is a global trend toward increased use of criminal law to combat hate speech. In assessing this trend, one should be mindful of the experience of countries that have long had criminal laws targeting harmful expression. Canada is one such country. Using the leading Canadian cases of R v. Zundel and R v. Keegstra, this article argues that the Canadian experience suggests the criminal law is a flawed mechanism for countering harmful expression. This is so for at least three reasons. First, hate-speech prosecutions may undermine the group dignity and sense of inclusion of minority groups. Second, criminal laws …
White Christian Nationalism & Antisemitism: A True Threat, Doron Kalir
White Christian Nationalism & Antisemitism: A True Threat, Doron Kalir
FIU Law Review
The ideology of Jewish hatred, also known as antisemitism, has deep roots. In the United States, antisemitism has known a long and complicated history; in the early 1940s, it reached peak levels. Now, more than 80 years later, antisemitism again rears its ugly head, aiming to end the Golden Age of American Jewry. The exclusionary ideology aiming to obliterate the wall separating Church and state, and to institutionalize Christian identity and values into the public square, also known as White Christian Nationalism, has deep roots. In the United States, it had a long and complicated history; by the mid 1920s, …

Cracking The Quotas: The 1948 New York Fair Educational Practices Act And The Jewish Quest For Color-Blindness, Miyuki Kita
FIU Law Review
This article explores how vigorously Jews pushed to enact the 1948 New York Fair Educational Practices Act to fight anti-Jewish quotas in higher education. The Act was the first state-level legislation to prohibit higher educational institutions from excluding, limiting or otherwise discriminating against persons seeking admission as students because of race, religion, creed, color, or national origin. Seeking a way to overcome discrimination in university admissions, Jews sought to combat it by promoting racially and religiously neutral admission procedures within the broad context of the expansion of opportunities in higher education after World War II instead of directly attacking antisemitism. …
Lessons For The Trump Administration From The Biden U.S. National Strategy To Counter Antisemitism, Lili Levi
Lessons For The Trump Administration From The Biden U.S. National Strategy To Counter Antisemitism, Lili Levi
FIU Law Review
In May 2023, the Biden Administration issued the first-ever U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism with a goal of hindering further normalization of antisemitism by increasing public awareness of antisemitism and highlighting positive Jewish contributions to America. Recent events, however, particularly the social and political upheaval over protests of the war in Gaza, have led to public contestation over Israel, increased instances of antisemitism, and the partisan politicization of Jewish issues. All this has raised questions about whether the National Strategy's assumptions about public attitudes, the viability of antisemitism awareness initiatives, and the possibility of whole-of-society agreement on countering antisemitism …
Sabbath Accommodations As A Civil Right: History, Title Vii, And The Path To Groff V. Dejoy, Isaac May
Sabbath Accommodations As A Civil Right: History, Title Vii, And The Path To Groff V. Dejoy, Isaac May
FIU Law Review
In Groff v. DeJoy, which concerned a Christian Sabbath observer, Jewish groups were vindicated by the Court’s overturning Hardison v. Transworld Airlines and strengthening Title VII’s protections for religion, particularly around employees’ Sabbath observance. This article positions Groff within the history of Jewish efforts to secure employment protections for Sabbath worship. Efforts to secure Sabbath accommodations were an outgrowth and expansion of early twentieth-century efforts to ensure Jews were protected by public accommodation laws and a product of attempts by litigators such as Leo Pfeffer to end mandatory Sunday closing laws in the mid-twentieth century. Sabbath accommodations became a critical …

Exploring The Intersectionality Of Antisemitism And The Law: A Case Study Of The Crown Heights Riots And Aftermath, Stephen Sussman, Carole Huberman
FIU Law Review
Antisemitism does not exist in isolation; it often intersects with other forms of discrimination and prejudice. Examining these intersections is crucial to understanding the broader dynamics of discrimination and developing effective strategies. Antisemitism and racism often intersect in complex ways. Historical examples include the portrayal of Jews as racially inferior or “other” during periods of heightened racial tension. This intersection has implications for policies related to hate crimes, racial profiling, and equal protection under the law. This research examines the complex interplay between antisemitism and the legal system, using the Crown Heights Riots of 1991 as a focal point. The …

Nil Collectives And The Disadvantage Dilemma: Disparities And Challenges In Collegiate Athletics, Arianna Garcia
FIU Law Review
For a long time, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)’s principle of amateurism, the concept that student-athletes should not profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL) while competing in collegiate athletics, was strongly upheld. However, it quickly became a challenge for the NCAA to defend its principle of amateurism after thousands of advocates, including universities and student-athletes themselves, began to criticize the NCAA. Finally, after decades of fighting for more equitable rights for student-athletes, the NCAA made a change to its NIL Policy as a result of two major landmark cases. The NCAA, however, now faces another challenge amidst …

“Modernizing Regulatory Review”: A Short-Lived Abandonment Of More Than Four Decades Of Regulatory Review And Benefit-Cost Analysis, Richard Belzer
FIU Law Review
"President Biden’s Modernizing Regulatory Review (MRR) initiative fundamentally altered regulatory procedures, practices, and centralized oversight that had been in place since 1981 when they were formalized by President Reagan in Executive Order 12,291. MRR proceeded in three phases. First, a Memorandum issued on President Biden’s first day in office telegraphing the broad outlines of the plan. Second, more than two years later, an Executive Order codifying the MRR memorandum was issued, combined with implementation guidance issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). And third, OMB guidance on the conduct of regulatory BCA was radically revised, clearly with an …

Confronting The Challenges Of Regulating Artificial Intelligence, Amy B. Cyphert
FIU Law Review
Public opinion polls conclude that the American public is in favor of regulating artificial intelligence (“AI”), and many technology companies publicly claim that they would welcome regulation. And yet the United States has struggled to enact federal comprehensive AI regulations beyond a short-lived Executive Order. Why? Part I of this Article explains why regulating AI is so difficult, focusing on six key reasons: AI is a global issue; AI is not one discrete issue; AI is developing at a speed that is unprecedented; lawmakers largely lack the technical expertise effective AI regulation requires; the stakes of getting the regulation wrong …
Should All Exercise Routines Be Precluded From Copyright Protection? The Current Scope Of Copyrightable Choreography, Malina Lapenes
Should All Exercise Routines Be Precluded From Copyright Protection? The Current Scope Of Copyrightable Choreography, Malina Lapenes
FIU Law Review
Choreography as copyrightable subject matter is an underdeveloped topic in copyright law. Few cases discuss the line drawn between routines that can be protected by copyright and those that cannot. In cases where a choreographic routine tells a story, such as a theatrical performance, copyright protection is warranted. This is because the routine's expressive elements can easily be separated from the routine's underlying athletic movements. However, for routines that do not have readily identifiable expressive elements, courts seem to use too narrow a standard for copyright classification. Specifically, in Tracy Anderson, the district court used a narrow approach in classifying …
Emergency Oversight, Catherine Baylin Duryea
Emergency Oversight, Catherine Baylin Duryea
FIU Law Review
This Article examines one of the most pressing questions in administrative law: How much judicial oversight should administrative agencies face during an emergency? This issue was particularly salient during the COVID epidemic, but it is not new. The Second World War saw a significant expansion and consolidation of the power of administrative agencies as well as experimentation with the appropriate oversight role for courts. This Article analyzes one such experiment: judicial oversight of agencies implementing wartime anti-inflationary measures, i.e. price controls and rationing. During the war, Congress created a specialized court, the Emergency Court of Appeals (ECA), to hear disputes …
Being Pregnant In Someone Else's Body, Jennifer S. Hendricks
Being Pregnant In Someone Else's Body, Jennifer S. Hendricks
FIU Law Review
In the wake of the Dobbs decision overturning the right to abortion, now is a critical time to re-assess how legal feminism theorizes the pregnant body. Before Dobbs, feminist legal scholarship had blazed a path of anti-maternalism, a stance rooted in liberal, formalist notions of equality that denigrates the “feminine” and too often minimizes the importance of reproductive issues both as tools of sex-based subordination in the present and as foundations for liberation in the future. Anti-maternalism is attractive to legal scholars because it minimizes sex and gender differences and may appear to be gender-inclusive. It has produced arguments that …
Fifty Years Of Protecting The Surviving Spouse: The Origin And Evolution Of Florida's Elective Share, Flavia Argamasilla
Fifty Years Of Protecting The Surviving Spouse: The Origin And Evolution Of Florida's Elective Share, Flavia Argamasilla
FIU Law Review
Currently, Florida’s elective share framework calculates the amount a surviving spouse is entitled to based on a decedent’s “elective estate.” Although this “elective estate” represents a significant improvement from previous law, where a decedent was free to completely disinherit a surviving spouse, issues still loom regarding the fairness of the framework. Granting a surviving spouse a fixed share of 30 percent of the decedent’s “elective estate” regardless of the length of the marriage can lead to inequitable outcomes. For instance, a surviving spouse who was married to the decedent for any period of time, one month even, can elect to …

The Role Of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In The Associations Between Minority Stressors And Self-Reported Suicide Likelihood In Lgbtq+ Adults., Ines Cano-Gonzalez, Ruby Charak, Roman Ronzon-Tirado, Jorge I. Cantu
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer individuals (LGBTQ+) report higher rates of suicide-related behaviors when compared to heterosexual cisgender individuals. The minority stress theory proposes that the suicide risk disparities among LGBTQ+ individuals may be explained by the additional exposure to stressors unique to their minority sexual orientation and gender identity. However, less is known about the mechanism of minority stressors and suicide risk among trauma-exposed LGBTQ+ individuals. The present study aimed to explore the role of the International Classification of Diseases, version-11 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (disturbances in self-organization [DSO] + PTSD) in the associations between …
System Dynamics With Insight Maker, Steven D'Alessandro, Fons Wijnhoven
System Dynamics With Insight Maker, Steven D'Alessandro, Fons Wijnhoven
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This book offers a practical, model-driven pathway for reasoning about uncertain futures in business and public policy using system dynamics with Insight Maker. It begins by motivating why historical data alone often fail to predict social change, and it introduces the core language of system dynamics—stocks, flows, feedbacks, delays, and auxiliary variables—alongside the complementary use of agent-based modeling. Through business-relevant cases (e.g., park management trade-offs, epidemic–economy interactions, and industry competition), the book demonstrates how non-linear structure generates counter-intuitive dynamics, why scenario analysis is essential, and how to translate causal loop diagrams into stock-and-flow simulations. Readers are guided step-by-step to build, …

Enhancing Intrusion Detection Systems With Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems, Jitender Sharma, Sonia ., Karan Kumar, Pankaj Jain, Pankaj Jain, Hussein Alkattan
Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity
Network security has become increasingly critical in recent years. Among the various aspects of network security and considering several approaches to network security, intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have gained considerable attention. The prominence of this factor, among other factors of network security, is due to its ability to address the complex and uncertain nature of security breaches. Whenever data flow over the network, precise categorization of normal and malicious data is necessary. Past IDS systems lack precise categorization. Thus, the present study focuses on the use of the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) as a classifier to categorize network instances …

Hybrid Cooperative Spectrum Structured (Hcss) Approach For Adaptive Routing In Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks, Sadeem Dheyaa Shamsi, Ameer Sameer Hamood Mohammed Ali, Wameed Deyah Shamsi
Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity
Cognitive radio networks provide an important function in the efficient use of the radio spectrum. Therefore, dedicated cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs) are expected to improve communication performance in a multihop network that requires a dedicated routing protocol that considers the dynamic mobility of secondary user nodes on the basis of the random availability of primary node channels. To enhance routing in the CRAHNs environment, in this paper, a novel Hybrid Cooperative Spectrum Structured (HCSS) approach that combines cooperative spectrum sensing and spectrum-aware routing protocols can be effective in appropriate decision making for routing packets in such a network. …

Android devices are rapidly being used, which makes it easy for the malware threat to rise to higher levels. This ever-growing problem has prompted the need to enhance detection systems as far as these devices are concerned. Standard techniques of machine learning (ML) are sufficient from the point of view of their speed for searching patterns and behaviors of contemporary malware; however, it is more important to have effectively enhanced methods. The purpose of this paper is to expand the utilization of Android malware identification via artificial neural networks (ANNs) and compare its efficiency with that of other ML methods. …

Malware detection is a vital problem, and efficient methods that can efficiently detect malware are needed. The increasing use of mobile computers makes malware detection a vital part of security in an era where smartphones have come to play a key role in many of our daily lives. Earlier approaches, however, suffer from high false positive rates; they are not scalable for larger databases, or they are not amenable to adapt well to novel zero-day malware. For these reasons, the demand for more sensitive and flexible detection models is high. In this study, we develop a hybrid mobile malware detection …
