Surf Stewardship And Coastal Change: A Combined Report For The North Devon Unesco Biosphere Reserve And The North Devon World Surfing Reserve, Kizzy Beaumont
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Executive summaryNorth Devon’s coastline sits within a layered governance setting, including statutory marine plans, inshore fisheries management, coastal and shoreline planning, protected areas, and seasonal bathing water monitoring, led by national regulators and local authorities. Within this wider context, this study focuses on how two non-statutory designations, the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the North Devon World Surfing Reserve (WSR), canwork together. The work forms part of a PhD on Transformative Ocean Governance and was motivated by the North Devon WSR’s designation and the opportunity to understand how the two designations might complement each other in practice. We convened …
Surfing Towards Shared Futures - Comparative Insights From Australia's World Surfing Reserves: Part Of The Series: Transformative Ocean Governance In Australia’S World Surfing Reserves - A Community-Centred Perspective, Kizzy Beaumont
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Executive summaryThis comparative report brings together insights from the Noosa, Gold Coast, and Manly-Freshwater World Surfing Reserves (WSRs), showing how locally led stewardship delivers cultural, environmental, and economic value for coastal communities. Using a Transformative Ocean Governance lens, the analysis synthesises participant perspectives from focus groups and interviews alongside a desk-based review of official materials. Across the three sites there is clear commitment to surf culture, environmental care, and participation, with practical innovations already visible in education, etiquette, and community engagement. The sites follow different but complementary governance paths. Noosa demonstrates how independent stewardship can sit alongside council activity and deliver …

Global calls for greater ocean protection have sparked renewed interest in very large marine protected areas (VLMPAs, >100,000 km2) to achieve management targets; however, their conservation value is debated. We assessed the suitability of a VLMPA (640,000 km2) in the Indian Ocean for capturing the movements of resident mobile marine megafauna. We found that 95% of foraging, breeding and/or locally migrating individuals occurred within the VLMPA despite variable habitat use; adult hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata, n = 22, 6124 tracking days) foraged on mesophotic banks (>30 m depth), reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi, n = …

Tropical forest canopies are the biosphere’s most concentrated atmospheric interface for carbon, water and energy1,2. However, in most Earth System Models, the diverse and heterogeneous tropical forest biome is represented as a largely uniform ecosystem with either a singular or a small number of fixed canopy ecophysiological properties3. This situation arises, in part, from a lack of understanding about how and why the functional properties of tropical forest canopies vary geographically4. Here, by combining field-collected data from more than 1,800 vegetation plots and tree traits with satellite remote-sensing, terrain, climate and soil data, we predict variation across 13 morphological, structural …

Data on the fate of tyre wear particles (TWPs) within aquatic environments is limited. This study quantified TWPs entering estuaries in stormwater drainage and atmospheric fallout, and once they have reached the marine environment, within surface waters and sediments. TWPs were found at concentrations of 0.4 mg/L, 2.55 mg/m2/d, 0.00063 mg/L, and 0.96 g/kg respectively. Samples were partitioned by size to examine the distribution of TWP mass. 80-90% of TWP mass entering marine systems (stormwater and atmospheric fallout) lay between 31-125 µm. Larger particles preferentially accumulated in sediments where ∼50 % of TWP mass was >250 μm, compared to surface …

BACKGROUND: High-grade gliomas (HGG) have a poor prognosis despite aggressive treatment. Severe, persistent lymphopenia occurring in HGG patients after concurrent chemoradiation is associated with worse survival. NT-I7, a long-acting interleukin-7 analog, has been shown to increase CD4 and CD8 counts in healthy, septic, and HIV-positive adults. This multi-institutional, NCI-funded dose-escalation trial is the first to evaluate NT-I7 safety and activity in HGG patients with severe treatment-related lymphopenia (TRL) and the effect of co-administered glucocorticoids.
METHODS: Eligible HGG patients had CD4 counts < 300 cells/mm
RESULTS: NT-I7 was well tolerated in all 12 patients (median age 64; median CD4 count 161 cells/mm³) before the …

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are multifunctional immune cells with roles in both the innate and adaptive immune system. Their hallmark function is production of large amounts of type I interferons in response to viral infections, but they are also capable of producing a range of other cytokines, antigen presentation, and cytotoxicity. Their potential as an immunotherapy for cancer and infectious disease is being explored, but broad application of these cells is challenged by low frequency in the blood and low viability during

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections are widespread in resource-limited settings, and modulate host immune responses, with potential implications for viral coinfections. Intestinal helminths can alter susceptibility to respiratory viruses, but the mechanisms influencing SARS-CoV-2 infection outcomes remain poorly understood.
METHODS: Using the Syrian hamster model, we investigated the impact of prior infection with the human hookworm
RESULTS: Prior hookworm infection did not significantly alter viral titers or weight loss compared to SARS-CoV-2 infection alone, but distinct transcriptional signatures compared were identified compared to either single infection. Coinfection uniquely differentially regulated hematopoiesis and B cell-associated genes (e.g.,

Command And Consequence: Reassessing King David’S Military Decisions In The Uriah Affair – A Legal And Ethical Analysis In The Context Of Modern Legal Theory, Jonathan Hasson, Oded Mudrik, Abraham Tennenbaum
Touro Law Review
This study critically reevaluates King David's command in 2 Samuel 11 and 12 to place Uriah the Hittite in the battle's frontlines, resulting in his death, through the contemporary lens of military law and ethics. By juxtaposing the ancient narrative with modern legal doctrines, it investigates the complexities of command responsibility and the intersection of personal motives in military orders. Focusing on the interplay between David's personal entanglements with Bathsheba and his official capacity as a military leader, the analysis navigates the ethical quandaries and legal ramifications of his decisions. This piece methodically dissects the Biblical text and contemporaneous legal …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Hierarchical bullying in public healthcare organizations is an entrenched negative behaviour that results in a range of adverse outcomes for staff, including diminished wellbeing. This study integrates social exchange and conservation of resources theories as a lens for formulating hypotheses and employs multilevel statistical modelling to examine whether team-level compassion moderates the impact of hierarchical bullying on wellbeing. Using multilevel statistical modelling, the study analysed cross-sectional data from 632 healthcare workers nested within 48 teams in a single public health district in Australia. The findings indicate that work teams with higher levels of team compassion can mitigate the negative effects …

Social Justice, Practical Lawyering, And The Elephant In Solitary Confinement: Why Animal Law Belongs In The Legal Writing Classroom, Conley Wouters
Animal Law Review
Animal law has grown exponentially since its genesis in the late 1970s. It is the subject of survey courses, seminars, clinics, and law reviews. But animal law per se has not made its way into the legal writing discipline, and its absence creates missed opportunities for legal writing instructors to improve our teaching and help our students develop critical lawyering skills. This Article argues that we should seize these opportunities and incorporate animal law into legal writing classes.
The Article begins by summarizing the argument and offering a gen-eral description of how legal writing professors and their students stand to …

Abstract Readmission Reduction of 1st Year Transplant Recipients Clear communication with patients at their health-literacy level improves patient outcomes, fosters trust, and is associated with readmission reduction. Readmission of transplant recipients are correlated with morbidity, medical errors, higher healthcare economic costs, and indicative of decreased survival post- transplant. Literature suggests that up to 72% of transplant recipients may have low health literacy increasing risk of readmission. The Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality created the REALM-SF assessment as a tool for medical providers to evaluate a patient’s health literacy status in a timely manner. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) …

Anomaly Detection Based Post Gripping Perception For Industrial Logistics Robotics, Firas Zoghlami
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The adoption of low volume high mix manufacturing lines in global production sites has lead to a great need for flexible automation solutions. Flexible intelligent robots as an example are increasingly deployed in new industrial environments, such as the intra-logistics, in order to increase the automation level of the mentioned manufacturing lines. The lack of structure and the high dynamic of such industrial environments lead to potential performance deterioration related to unexpected events that are not recognized by the robot. Detecting such changes in the robot environment is believed in this thesis to be possible with anomaly detection techniques which …
The Impact Of Professionalism Education And Formative Feedback In Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students Utilizing The Abbreviated Cpi Feedback Form In The On-Campus Clinic Environment, William L. Scott
Dissertations
Problem
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) developed the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) to assess the professional behaviors required for a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student to be considered "entry level" in their clinical training. Feedback from our clinical partners has indicated that, historically, students from the Andrews University DPT program have scored lower than students from other programs in several areas of the CPI during their clinical experiences. According to subjective reports from our clinical partners, these areas included safety, professional behavior, accountability, communication, and critical thinking. These five areas have been the focus of our efforts in …

Automated Video Colorization Techniques For Enhanced Visual Realism And Computational Efficiency, Zahoor M. Aydam, Nidhal K. El Abbadi
Mesopotamian Journal of Computer Science
Automatic video colorization remains a challenging computer vision task, particularly when ensuring semantic accuracy and temporal coherence across dynamic, multi-scene content. Existing methods often rely on a single fixed reference image, which fails to adapt to abrupt scene changes or variations in lighting and texture. This study presents a hybrid deep learning framework that dynamically selects multiple reference images per scene using adaptive thresholds derived from the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and deep features extracted via a ResNet50 backbone with Generalized Mean Pooling (GeM). The framework integrates three specialized modules pre-processing, reference image processing, and attention-based colorization—operating in the …

The main goal of this study was to explore the challenges faced by Cameroon opposition political parties and how these challenges affect presidential electoral outcomes since 1990. We employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data for the study. The research design was the case study design, and the sampling technique was nonprobability sampling (precisely purposeful sampling). We employed the constructivist research philosophy to show that reality resides in the different views of people. Consequently, it finds out that the opposition in Cameroon lacks credibility and vision to achieve victory in presidential elections. They also face challenges of suppression, …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of compounds of high concern due to their ubiquity, persistence, and adverse health impacts. With a diversity of chemical structures and properties, detection tools are needed to capture as many PFAS as possible. In this study, a microporous polyethylene tube (MPT) passive sampler was calibrated for 25 target compounds, 8 suspect PFAS, and extractable organofluorine (EOF) during 1–2 week deployments in groundwater, freshwater river, and estuary contaminated by aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). Targeted analysis, suspect screening, and EOF were performed on passive and grab samples to derive sampling rates, Rs. …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemical pollutants of growing concern for many stakeholders. Due to their ubiquity, persistence in the environment, and potential for toxicity at low environmental concentrations, it is necessary to have convenient and reliable methods to measure PFAS in natural waters. Passive sampling methods (in situ preconcentration of PFAS) may be suitable for monitoring situations. One passive sampling design successfully employed for other, well studied contaminants (e.g., methylmercury) is the diffusive gradient in thin film sampler (DGT). However, the application of DGT for PFAS requires development and validation. Here, we iterate on previous PFAS-DGT studies by …

Black carbon (BC), the most recalcitrant part of the pyrogenic carbon continuum, is formed by the incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels. Methods for detecting BC include the chemical degradation of condensed aromatic compounds into benzenepolycarboxylic acids (BPCA), chemothermal oxidation of organic carbon at 375°C (CTO), 13C nuclear magnetic resonance combined with a molecular mixing model, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, and the use of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as tracers. However, there is limited knowledge about the comparability of these methods in marine sediments and their suitability as wildfire proxies. Here, we examined a sediment core from the Congo River …
