A Survey On Non-Invasive Computing: Neurological-Hematological Framework For Early Infection And Stroke Detection With Future Directions, Masud Rabbani, Nafi Us Sabbir Sabith, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This paper introduces a novel, non-invasive tool for building a holistic neurological-hematological diagnostic framework that can be used for early detection of infection and stroke. We proposed and developed a multimodal sensing approach, where an ear canal–based acoustic system can be used to identify brain activities and a smartphone-based facial video analysis platform to estimate white blood cell (WBC) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Our ear-based EEG methodology achieved a remarkable 96% classification accuracy from the low-frequency level (>30hz), with regression models with mean R2 scores above 0.96 across all EEG bands. For hematological diagnostics, the system predicted WBC counts …

Fine-Tuned Large Language Models (Llms): Improved Prompt Injection Attacks Detection, Md Abdur Rahman, Hossain Shahriar, Guillermo Francia, Fan Wu, Alfredo Cuzzocrea, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Large language models (LLMs) are becoming a popular tool as they have significantly advanced in their capability to tackle a wide range of language-based tasks. However, LLMs applications are highly vulnerable to prompt injection attacks, which poses a critical problem. These attacks target LLMs applications through using carefully designed input prompts to divert the model from adhering to original instruction, thereby it could execute unintended actions. These manipulations pose serious security threats which potentially results in data leaks, biased outputs, or harmful responses. This project explores the security vulnerabilities in relation to prompt injection attacks. To detect whether a prompt …

Études primaires

Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is an irritant (skin, eye and respiratory) and a sensitizer. This compound is used to manufacture polyurethane materials such as flexible foams. The use of isocyanates may lead to exposure by inhalation and/or skin contact and isocyanates are recognized as a cause of occupational asthma. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) recommends a threshold limit value (TLV) for TDI of 1 part per billion (ppb) (7 µg m-³) with inhalable fraction and vapor (IFV) notation. This notation means that the inhalable fraction of particles and the vapor phase of TDI may …

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) effectively decreases disruptive behavior in children (Daley et al., 2014). Nonetheless, many parents perceive BPT to be challenging and demanding, leading to reports of high treatment dropout rates (Chacko et al., 2016.) To address this, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of Goodtimer, a behavioral health device utilizing contingency management, an element of BPT, to mitigate child disruptive behaviors. The Goodtimer is designed to make administering a contingency management system easier for parents. Employing a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design, the study assessed six families with children aged 3-9 years. Most parents who used the Goodtimer reported …

Attachment And Delusional Ideation: A Systematic Review And Proposed Model Of The Association Between Attachment Insecurity And Delusion Symptoms, Ryan Sparks M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Early repeated child-parent experiences impact the emergence of children’s reality testing by providing them with secure, trusting relationships with reality-oriented caregivers in which beliefs can be evaluated and refined. These relationships facilitate open and reciprocal communication about thoughts and feelings. Caregivers facilitate the development of children’s reflective capacities by helping them connect their inner experiences to their behavior. This process encourages them to assess whether their thoughts and feelings accurately reflect reality by remaining attuned to the perceptions of reality that are shared with others. Given the centrality of early caregiving experiences to one’s development of reality testing, attachment theory …

Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based Practice: An Integrated And Future-Orientated Approach To Resistance In Child Protection And Welfare Service Users?, Susan Flynn Dr

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article presents a theoretical exposition of an integrated solution-focused, strengths-based perspective. It does so through a thematic review of literature. The proposition is that solution-focused, strengths-based techniques can offer practitioners useful modes of working with resistance in child protection and welfare service users. The issue of working well with service users who present as resistant to the work, is complex and challenging in child protection and welfare practice. Practitioners must strive for rigorous, humane and compassionate practice, which never distracts from or compromises child safety. A thematic review of literature on solution-focused, strengths-based practice is presented. Therein, relevant theoretical …

Sars-Cov-2 Variants Of Concern: Biological Implications Of Immunogenicity And Comorbidity, Jacob Nichols Jan 2025

Sars-Cov-2 Variants Of Concern: Biological Implications Of Immunogenicity And Comorbidity, Jacob Nichols

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

When coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged in human populations in late 2019, there was nothing known about the virus, SARS-CoV-2, besides that it had a high degree of similarity to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and middle east respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The prior published research on these viruses set a strong foundation for the research approaches needed to quickly stand-up medical countermeasures for treatment of COVID-19. However, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) soon revealed a high propensity to evolve new variants that could engage host cell receptors with greater affinity and escape host immunity. With each wave …

Protein Kinase D1 In Myeloid Cells Promotes Disease Progression And Severity In S. Rectivirgula Induced Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, John David Snyder Jan 2025

Protein Kinase D1 In Myeloid Cells Promotes Disease Progression And Severity In S. Rectivirgula Induced Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, John David Snyder

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an inflammation driven interstitial lung disease characterized by inflammation of the interstitium, bronchioles, and alveoli of the lung that leads to granuloma formation. Myeloid lineage immune cells play a critical role in the early and late stages of the disease, and this activity is mediated through toll-like receptors (TLRs) expressed by these cells. Protein kinase D1 (PKD1) has previously been identified as a critical signaling molecule in the TLR signaling pathways of all TLR family members except for TLR3. Our previous research found that activation of protein kinase D1 (PKD1) in the lungs following exposures …

U.S. initial public offerings are declining and the amount of private market assets under management are exploding. Simultaneously, the number of retail investors opening taxable brokerage accounts is increasing. Private market assets are hot. Everyone–both institutional and retail investors–wants in on the action. Yet considerations such as financial resources and U.S. securities laws make such investment less accessible for many retail investors. In this short article, we explore this changing investment landscape and, specifically, one development within this craze: retail investments in private company shares via closed-end funds (or CEFs).

Recently, CEFs like ARK Venture Fund and Destiny Tech100, Inc. …

Is Originalism Bullshit?, Michael L. Smith Jan 2025

Is Originalism Bullshit?, Michael L. Smith

Faculty Articles

It’s finally time to answer the big question. This Article draws on the surprisingly robust literature examining the definition, essence, and significance of bullshit and evaluates whether originalist constitutional interpretation fits the bill. I begin with Harry Frankfurt’s definition of bullshit as utterances made in pursuit of the speaker’s goals without regard for their truth value. I also rely on alternate formulations, including bullshit as unclarifiable nonsense as well as contextual and audience-centric variations of bullshit.

While not all instances of originalism are bullshit, I identify those instances which are, and go on to demonstrate that originalism is uniquely prone …

Lost Fatherhood: Including Fathers In The Post-Dobbs Abortion Debate, Linda L. Schlueter Jan 2025

Lost Fatherhood: Including Fathers In The Post-Dobbs Abortion Debate, Linda L. Schlueter

Faculty Articles

Scientific studies over the last five decades show the negative impact an abortion can have on the men who fathered the aborted children. These studies demonstrate that those men-even if they supported the woman's decision to have an abortion-can experience a variety of psychological problems including depression, anger, hopelessness, helplessness, broken or damaged relationships, feelings of emasculation, and loneliness. Despite these compelling studies, little or no real attention is given to involving men in the legal debate regarding abortion. The abortion debate presents a legal Rubik's Cube of thorny issues that can affect the mother, the father, and the unborn …

Reelin Regulation Of Striatal Physiology And Cocaine Reward, Kasey Lynn Brida Jan 2025

Reelin Regulation Of Striatal Physiology And Cocaine Reward, Kasey Lynn Brida

All ETDs from UAB

Drugs of abuse activate defined neuronal populations in brain reward structures such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc), which are thought to promote the enduring synaptic, circuit, and behavioral consequences of drug exposure. While the molecular and cellular effects arising from experience with drugs like cocaine are increasingly well understood, the mechanisms that sculpt NAc neuron participation are largely unknown. Here, we leveraged unbiased single-nucleus transcriptional profiling to identify expression of the secreted glycoprotein Reelin (encoded by the Reln gene) as a marker of cocaine-activated neurons within the rat NAc. Multiplexed in situ detection confirmed selective expression of the immediate early …

Platal Expansion Using The Invisalign Palatal Expander "Ipe", Hassan Chihab Jan 2025

Platal Expansion Using The Invisalign Palatal Expander "Ipe", Hassan Chihab

All ETDs from UAB

Palatal expansion has been used in orthodontics to treat a narrow maxilla and to primarily correct posterior dental crossbites. In younger patients, palatal expansion can readily be achieved through opening of the mid-palatal suture, as it is not fused at that age. As the mid-palatal suture matures, expansion will gradually be difficult to achieve, and more dental expansion is obtained rather than skeletal. In addition, there is a tendency to get more dental tipping. Palatal expansion has been recommended not only to correct crossbites but also to improve breathing in patients with sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). …

Context-Dependent Functional Connectivity During Attention Orienting And Reorienting: Comparing Individuals With Schizophrenia And Controls, Hyun Freeman

All ETDs from UAB

Attentional deficits are a well-established feature of schizophrenia, impacting various functional domains. Previous research suggested altered connectivity within attention networks may underlie these deficits, but few studies have examined how these net-works dynamically interact during different types of attention processes. In this study, we investigated functional connectivity patterns during attentional orienting and reori-enting to social and nonsocial cues in 25 individuals with schizophrenia and 25 controls. Participants completed a modified Posner spatial cueing task with both social (eyes) and nonsocial (arrows) cues during fMRI scanning. Using generalized psychophysiological interaction analysis with the left lateral occipital cortex (LOC) as a seed …

Development Of A Resistive Force Paradigm For The Treatment Of Hemiparesis, Jonathan Daniel Hill

All ETDs from UAB

Hemiparesis is weakening of one side of the body as a result of a stroke that contributes to a decrease in propelling forces (i.e. propulsion) while walking. Existing research to improve propulsion of individuals post-stroke has implemented single-belt and split-belt treadmills, various walking speeds, asynchronous belt speeds (on split-belt treadmills), and a variety of methods for inducing resistive force upon a paretic limb in an attempt to strengthen the paretic limb and improve overall gait symmetry. However, despite this concerted effort of clinicians and scientists, gait deficits remain. Novel methods are required to improve reduced propulsion of individuals post-stroke. Recently, …

The Role Of Aquaporin-3 Lysine 282 Acetylation In Renal Water Balance, Nha Van Huynh Jan 2025

The Role Of Aquaporin-3 Lysine 282 Acetylation In Renal Water Balance, Nha Van Huynh

All ETDs from UAB

Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) mediates basolateral water transport in the kidney collecting duct principal cells, contributing to vasopressin-mediated urine concentration. We previously identified a novel post-translational modification of AQP3, the acetylation of lysine 282 (K282), which we hypothesized as a positive regulator of AQP3 water permeability. First, we found that collecting duct K282 acetylated AQP3 increased upon water deprivation, suggesting an involvement in renal water balance. To decipher the functional role of this modification, we utilized AQP3 acetylation (K282Q or Q) and deacetylation (K282R or R) mimetic mutant mice models generated using CRISPR/Cas9 knock-in technology. Both male and female wild-type (WT) and …

Patients with advanced disease pose a complex challenge due to poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Notch signaling is a juxtracrine cell-cell communication mechanism whereby transmembrane Notch receptors (Notch 1-4) interact with neighboring cells through ligands binding, resulting in a cascade that regulates various developmental processes and cell fate decisions. Dysregulated Notch1 signaling is implicated in PNETs, affecting neuroendocrine tumor biology and potentially interacting with …

Evaluation Of In Vitro Cardiac Models For Characterizing The Role Of Autophagy In Streptococcus Pneumoniae Infection, Georgianna Khong Jan 2025

Evaluation Of In Vitro Cardiac Models For Characterizing The Role Of Autophagy In Streptococcus Pneumoniae Infection, Georgianna Khong

All ETDs from UAB

Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn) is a gram-positive bacterium that causes community-acquired pneumonia, the most prevalent type of pneumonia and a predominant infectious disease. There is evidence linking Spn infection to cardiovascular damage through the ability of Spn to invade and replicate in the myocardium, inducing cardiomyocyte death and disrupting cardiac function. Spn infects cardiomyocytes intracellularly through clathrin-mediated endocytosis, with demonstrated evidence of inhibitory mechanisms including clathrin-mediated endocytosis inhibitors and antioxidants. As a result, autophagy is being investigated as a potential pathway for cardiomyocyte self-defense against Spn, as it may protect cardiomyocytes intracellularly. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate …
