Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Student Capabilities And Their Relationships To Learning Experiences In A High-Poverty Rural School, Amanda J. Zullo
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Background and Purpose. This study was designed to identify, delineate, and explain the significant factors contributing to high school students’ relatively better graduation outcomes in a high-poverty rural region in New York State. Emphasis was placed on identifying key characteristics of the relationships between students’ and teachers’ perceptions of student capabilities and the qualities of student learning experiences. This study drew upon secondary data from a two-phase study of positive outlier schools identified as having significantly better graduation rates than other schools with similar demographic profiles. Informed by Mindset Theory and Authentic Learning Theory, the study examined how personal, social, …
Modeling Feature And Instance Interactions In Longitudinal Data For Improved Performance, Khandker Sadia Rahman
Modeling Feature And Instance Interactions In Longitudinal Data For Improved Performance, Khandker Sadia Rahman
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Tabular data has been a core representation format in machine learning, widely used in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, finance, and social services. In many of these domains, data is collected longitudinally, capturing sequences of events and evolving feature values for the same entities over time. Despite its prevalence, most machine learning approaches assume mutual independence between features and independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) instances. However, these assumptions limit effectiveness in settings where features and entities exhibit complex interdependencies. Moreover, existing approaches frequently overlook a critical dimension: the real-world impact of the decisions informed by model predictions. This thesis addresses …
Exploring Rna Dynamics: Insights Into Structural Modifications, Splicing Regulation, And Biological Function, Zohreh Nowzari
Exploring Rna Dynamics: Insights Into Structural Modifications, Splicing Regulation, And Biological Function, Zohreh Nowzari
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The post-transcriptional regulation of RNA, particularly through alternative splicing (AS) and chemical modifications, plays a critical role in gene expression and is linked to many human diseases. This thesis investigates three interconnected aspects of RNA and DNA dynamics and their regulation, providing new insights into cellular function.
First, we examine how RNA modifications influence the structural stability of transfer RNA Phenylalanine (tRNAPhe) in S. cerevisiae. Using temperature replica exchange molecular dynamics (T-REMD) simulations, we show that specific modifications create a network of interactions essential for maintaining tRNA’s tertiary structure. Interestingly, magnesium ions (Mg2+) can compensate for the …
Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii
Can Deliberate Practice For Inner Skills Enhance Therapist Trainees’ Mindfulness And Presence When Working With Clients?, Edmund W. Orlowski Iii
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
A replicated single-case design was used to assess the effectiveness of therapist trainees’ engagement in deliberate practice for inner psychotherapy skills (Rousmaniere, 2019). Deliberate practice (DP) is a structured approach to therapist skill development that involves repeatedly observing and responding to real or simulated clients (Rousmaniere, 2016). It was reasoned that by attending to their inner experience while repeatedly being exposed to challenging clinical material (e.g., a client’s suicidal ideation) outside of therapy, trainees may reduce their experiential avoidance and thus be more mindful and present in sessions with actual clients.
During the five-week baseline phase of the study, four …

Dynamics Of Mesoscale Offshore Wind Flows From An Observational And Modeling Perspective: Implications For Offshore Wind Energy, Elizabeth J. Mccabe
Dynamics Of Mesoscale Offshore Wind Flows From An Observational And Modeling Perspective: Implications For Offshore Wind Energy, Elizabeth J. Mccabe
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mid-latitude coastal regions of the United States, such as the New York Bight (NYB), are playing a major role in the development of offshore wind energy. However, mesoscale dynamics of local and regional circulations in these offshore waters are poorly understood. The sea breeze, especially in the NYB, will play a key role in the development of offshore wind energy, given the favorable wind speeds and high capacity factors during periods of peak demand. With limited vertical wind profile observations available offshore, the ability to accurately forecast and understand the spatiotemporal extent of the sea breeze and often associated low-level …
Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis Of Single-Case Experimental Design Data: A Comparison Of Bayesian And Restricted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Yukang Xue
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Two-stage individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis can be used to synthesize intervention effects from single-case experimental design (SCED) studies with multilevel modeling. However, various challenges exist at both stages, including standardizing the intervention effect size, accounting for autocorrelation, and estimating the between-study and between-case variances. While both restricted maximum likelihood estimation (REML) and Bayesian estimation can be used to estimate model parameters, REML has been more commonly applied despite the potential advantages offered by Bayesian methods. Moreover, no methodological studies have focused on Bayesian estimation in the context of meta-analysis of SCED studies, let alone when IPD meta-analysis (often recommended …
Author-Centered Approaches In Ela Instruction: A Multiple Case Study Of Secondary English Teachers, Jennifer M. Lockhart Mchugh
Author-Centered Approaches In Ela Instruction: A Multiple Case Study Of Secondary English Teachers, Jennifer M. Lockhart Mchugh
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Literary authors are often neglected in secondary ELA (English Language Arts) literary instruction. Teachers are unsure how to teach about the author and how much time to spend on establishing the context for the text when the goal is to “cover” a variety of literary texts as part of a planned curriculum during the school year. Acknowledging the role of authors’ intentions as well as their experiences and aesthetic decisions in the production of literature may provide new entry points into literary texts for students. This multiple-case study of secondary English teachers and their high school students in a “bounded …

Low capacitance integration with readout electronics was achieved through wire bonds to custom printed circuit boards (PCBs) with commercial components.
The relationship between device …
Risk Factors For Executive Functioning Development In Preschool Children With Type 1 Diabetes, Victoria L. Ledsham
Risk Factors For Executive Functioning Development In Preschool Children With Type 1 Diabetes, Victoria L. Ledsham
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Links between Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and decreased cognitive functioning in children are well documented, but research on executive functioning (EF) in this population is more limited. Multiple T1D-related risk factors (e.g., hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, glycemic variability, diabetic ketoacidosis) for EF have been established throughout the literature, but their individual effects have been difficult to determine given their interrelated nature. In result, cumulative risk has been proposed as a more robust predictor of EF differences in children with T1D. Moreover, despite the importance of early T1D onset as a risk factor for EF impairment, no studies have previously investigated EF in …
Impact Of Substrates And Deposition Time On Bacteria Associated With Saliva Samples And Its Implication On A Bacterial Signature-Based Body Fluid Identification Method, Olisdey Galano Cruz
Impact Of Substrates And Deposition Time On Bacteria Associated With Saliva Samples And Its Implication On A Bacterial Signature-Based Body Fluid Identification Method, Olisdey Galano Cruz
Master of Science in Forensic Science Directed Research Projects
Traditional serological methods for body fluid detection are limited by poor specificity and sensitivity, lacking confirmatory capability and thereby increasing the risk of false positives that may compromise the integrity of forensic investigations. While molecular methods such as mRNA, miRNA, and DNA methylation offer improved specificity, they are often hindered by marker instability and operational complexity in routine forensic workflows. Bacterial signature profiling has emerged as a promising alternative, offering enhanced stability, abundance, and compatibility with existing DNA workflows. However, its forensic implementation requires further validation. This study evaluated the effects of substrate type and storage time on the salivary …
Fast Times At Buckley High: The Assault On 1980s Nostalgia In Bret Easton Ellis’S The Shards, M. Keith Booker
Fast Times At Buckley High: The Assault On 1980s Nostalgia In Bret Easton Ellis’S The Shards, M. Keith Booker
English Faculty Publications and Presentations
Bret Easton Ellis, in novels such as Less Than Zero (1985) and American Psycho (1991), has vividly chronicled some of the darkest aspects of American society in the 1980s. It is thus no surprise that his return to writing about the 1980s in The Shards (2023), published amid a wave of nostalgia for the 1980s in American culture, goes strongly against that wave. The novel is set in the fall of 1981, when its narrator/protagonist—one “Bret Ellis”—is a high school senior in Los Angeles. This character (presumably a younger version of the author) goes out of his way to present …
From Trans Health To Vaccines: A Theoretically Driven Model Exploring Factors Related To Susceptibility To Medical Misinformation, Catherine Wall
From Trans Health To Vaccines: A Theoretically Driven Model Exploring Factors Related To Susceptibility To Medical Misinformation, Catherine Wall
Theses and Dissertations
Medical misinformation represents a significant threat to both individual and public health. While some consequences of this form of misinformation are relatively benign, there can be serious consequences ranging from a decreased trust in healthcare systems to an increased likelihood of epidemic outbreak and death. One such consequence can be seen in the recent legislative actions taken regarding access to transgender healthcare in the United States. Gender affirming care has been shown to benefit the mental well-being of transgender youth and adults; however, the demonstrably false information that underlies these legislative efforts can and has yielded significant harm. But what …
Establishing A Conventional Linac-Based Electron Flash Beam, Justin Defrancisco
Establishing A Conventional Linac-Based Electron Flash Beam, Justin Defrancisco
Theses and Dissertations
Problems: A rediscovered radiotherapy technique, FLASH, involves increasing the dose rate to >40 Gy/s. For a given dose, FLASH is shown to decrease the normal tissue complication probability without affecting the tumor control probability. More preclinical studies are necessary to confirm and enable these desirable properties on humans. Current preclinical investigations have diverse constraints, requiring FLASH apparatuses with flexible parameters and accurate control. However, there are limited FLASH platforms available, the existing ones are costly. Our institution is not in possession of any such infrastructure. Even if available, dosimetry and beam control in FLASH are extremely lacking. There is …
Psychometric Evaluation: Extending The Reliability And Validity Of The Teacher Attribution Measure For Early Elementary (Tam-Ee), Kerensa R. Nagle
Psychometric Evaluation: Extending The Reliability And Validity Of The Teacher Attribution Measure For Early Elementary (Tam-Ee), Kerensa R. Nagle
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher attributions of student challenging behavior have the potential to influence teacher-student relationships. However, the literature on teachers’ attributions of challenging behavior is sparse and lacks measurement standardization. This limits the replicability and generalizability of research findings. To determine if teacher attributions of student challenging behaviors influence teacher-student relationships, a measure demonstrating a specific score reliability and validity profile is needed. The present study evaluated the item- and scale-level score reliability and validity of a measure of teacher attribution of student challenging behavior, the Teacher Attribution Measure for Early Elementary (TAM-EE; Nemer, 2019), within a sample of teachers (N …
Sex-Specific Regulation Of Mash And Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Role Of Sphk2 In Females, Bria Pierre
Sex-Specific Regulation Of Mash And Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Role Of Sphk2 In Females, Bria Pierre
Theses and Dissertations
Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) representing a more severe form that can progress to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The sphingosine kinases and the S1P signaling pathway are key regulators of MASH and HCC progression. While much is known about the mechanisms contributing to MASH-HCC in males, less is known for females. Nevertheless, we previously identified sphingosine Kinase 2 (SphK2) to protect females from MASH-driven HCC. This study first performed differential gene expression analysis on human liver cohorts to examine sex-specific differences in gene expression …
Doves And Symbiotic Bacteria: Whole-Genome Assembly And Phylogenomic Inference, Mariam Topchyan
Doves And Symbiotic Bacteria: Whole-Genome Assembly And Phylogenomic Inference, Mariam Topchyan
Theses and Dissertations
Part 1
I examined a potential source of variation in phylogenetic inference, investigating whether handling single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) through different methods during reference-guided genome assembly of pigeon and dove species impacts phylogenetic reconstruction and inference. Specifically, I created a custom consensus base calling tool that handles allelic variation through two different approaches, either ignoring heterozygous sites by denoting them as an ambiguous character “N,” or using a pseudo-random choice between supported base variants. Through reference-guided assembly of 108 dove species, I generated two datasets of alignments using both consensus calling methods, created two trees from both datasets via supermatrix and …
Tate Speech: Radicalizing Rhetoric And Multi-Level Marketing Recruitment Strategies In The Manosphere, Carey J. Priebe
Tate Speech: Radicalizing Rhetoric And Multi-Level Marketing Recruitment Strategies In The Manosphere, Carey J. Priebe
Theses and Dissertations
My study aims to uncover the discursive elements behind the gendered recruitment strategies that influencers in the manosphere use to pipeline men and boys into their multi-level marketing (MLM) companies. In the manosphere, male supremacy is presented as desirable and subversive, and MLMs take advantage of emotional and economic instability. My study examines the Twitter (X) account of the popular manosphere influencer Andrew Tate as I trace his rhetoric along a three-pronged gendered recruitment framework, a framework originally developed around women selling essential oils online and funneling their followers into radical alt-right politics. What are the similarities and differences in …
Characterization Of Outer Surface Protein C Of Borreliella Role In Host Tropism, Kathryn Mf Chambers
Characterization Of Outer Surface Protein C Of Borreliella Role In Host Tropism, Kathryn Mf Chambers
Theses and Dissertations
The Lyme disease spirochetes, Borreliella spp., are maintained in nature through a complex enzootic cycle involving Ixodes ticks and a diverse set of reservoir hosts. The outer surface protein C (OspC) of the bacterium is an essential virulence factor required for transmission from ticks and early infection of mammals. Deletion of ospC abolishes infectivity, yet the precise molecular mechanisms underlying OspC function remain incompletely defined. In this dissertation, I examined the contribution of OspC type identity to host specificity. OspC is highly diverse, with over 30 genetically stable types described. While intra-type sequences are conserved (>95% amino acid …
Learning To Deceive And Persuade: Predictive Agents With Language And Personality Diversity In Social Deduction Games, Aaron M. Shah
Learning To Deceive And Persuade: Predictive Agents With Language And Personality Diversity In Social Deduction Games, Aaron M. Shah
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a novel multi-agent architecture that combines Joint Em bedding Predictive Architectures (JEPA), Free Energy Principle (FEP)–inspired planning, and language-based social interaction. The system is evaluated in a custom Werewolf-style hidden-role game, where agents must coordinate, persuade, or deceive under partial observability. Each agent encodes its belief state into a latent representation, predicts future trajectories under candidate actions, and selects votes or eliminations through a planner trained to minimize prediction error. To enable communication, agents are equipped with trainable mouthpieces. A lightweight SpeakerBandit selects from discrete templates using REINFORCE on judge-derived rewards, while a logit-bias head steers a …
A Fault-Tolerant Exchange-Coupled Spin-Ensemble Qubit At Elevated-Temperatures, Aniruddha Chakraborty
A Fault-Tolerant Exchange-Coupled Spin-Ensemble Qubit At Elevated-Temperatures, Aniruddha Chakraborty
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces a novel qubit architecture: the ferromagnetic exchange-coupled spin ensemble qubit (E-qubit), designed to address the noise-induced instability. In this work, the time evolution of the ensemble’s density matrix is studied using the Liouville–von Neumann equation. To benchmark against a single-spin qubit, the gate fidelity of an E-qubit is computed in the presence of thermal noise. Coherence time is also analyzed under identical thermal condition and a linear scaling is observed with qubit size . The results show that, at 6 K , the gate fidelity error (0.7 % ) of the seven- spin ensemble is an order …
Collaborative Robots For The Automation Of Additive Manufacturing Workflows, Logan Schorr
Collaborative Robots For The Automation Of Additive Manufacturing Workflows, Logan Schorr
Theses and Dissertations
Collaborative robots have the potential to transform the world, being easier to program, safer around humans, and far cheaper than their industrial counterparts. This makes them uniquely qualified to operate autonomously in environments where the presence of humans is necessary, either as an operator themselves or as observers of active processes. One of the fields where collaborative robots have significant opportunity for utility is in metal additive manufacturing, in which near net-shape parts can be autonomously fabricated using materials like stainless steel, titanium, or nickel super-alloys. These processes, especially laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition, use a fine …
Still An Athlete? An Exploration Of Athlete Identity, Body Appreciation, And Psychological Flourishing In Middle-Aged Former Collegiate Athletes, Kelly Furr
Theses and Dissertations
Collegiate athletes, upon retirement, are encouraged to develop other interests outside of sport to form a well-rounded identity. Yet middle-aged people often struggle to complete recommended strength training and exercise guidelines, and many continue to struggle with body appreciation and psychological well-being beyond adolescence and young adulthood. Using a cross-sectional survey design, 482 former NCAA athletes completed the Athlete Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), Exercise Identity Scale (EIS), Body-Appreciation Scale (BAS-2), and Flourishing Scale (FS). The study used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to determine if athlete or exercise identity positively affects body appreciation and psychological flourishing through the mediating variable of …
Assessment Of Drivers Of Light Attenuation In Virginia Reservoirs, Jackson Barnett
Assessment Of Drivers Of Light Attenuation In Virginia Reservoirs, Jackson Barnett
Theses and Dissertations
Water clarity in aquatic ecosystems is crucial for submerged vegetation and algal dynamics. We investigated the factors influencing light attenuation (kd) by measuring total suspended solids (TSS), chlorophyll-a (CHLa), and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) across thirteen stations located in seven reservoirs. Average kd was 1.69 m-1 (range: 0.37-3.99 m-1), with photic depths averaging 3.27 m (range: 1.15-12.43 m). TSS was the primary predictor of light attenuation (R² = 0.57, P = 0.003, SE = 0.053). Average TSS values for each site were multiplied by the slope of the kd-TSS relationship to find the proportion of kd …
The Trauma-To-Prison Pipeline: A Multi-Level Theoretical Framework Exploring The Intersection Of Inequality, Trauma, And Exclusionary Discipline, Dana Ainsworth
The Trauma-To-Prison Pipeline: A Multi-Level Theoretical Framework Exploring The Intersection Of Inequality, Trauma, And Exclusionary Discipline, Dana Ainsworth
Theses and Dissertations
The school-to-prison pipeline (STPP) is a widely recognized and extensively studied metaphor used to describe the process by which school discipline policies increase the risk of juvenile justice system involvement, particularly among historically marginalized populations. While it has been instrumental in shaping educational policy, the STPP framework has not evolved to account for the critical impact of trauma on learning and behavioral outcomes. Furthermore, it overlooks the role of systemic inequality that increases trauma exposure and produces concentric patterns of marginalization.
Drawing on research across the fields of education, public health, sociology, and criminal justice, this study proposes a theoretical …
Self-Threat And The Anchoring And Adjustment Heuristic, Mattie V. Hedgebeth
Self-Threat And The Anchoring And Adjustment Heuristic, Mattie V. Hedgebeth
Theses and Dissertations
Since its introduction in 1974, the anchoring and adjustment heuristic has been a topic of interest within the field of decision making. Although much work has examined factors that affect the process of the anchoring and adjustment heuristic, very little has been studied about how self-processes that may influence adjustment from an anchor. More specifically, the role of self-threat as a possible motivating factor in the adjustment process had yet to be explored. In my previous research, I explored how anchors that are threatening or flattering to one’s ingroup influences how they adjust from said anchor. Participants adjusted to an …
Investigating The Temperature Effects On Aedes Aegypti And Dengue Virus In Central Argentina: Perspectives From Mathematical Modeling, Morgan H. Jackson
Investigating The Temperature Effects On Aedes Aegypti And Dengue Virus In Central Argentina: Perspectives From Mathematical Modeling, Morgan H. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Dengue virus (DENV) causes over 390 million infections and around 40,000 deaths worldwide each year. DENV is primarily transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, and both the life cycle of these mosquitoes and DENV transmission are significantly impacted by temperature. In the temperate region of Central Argentina, where dengue outbreaks first began in 2009, outbreaks only occur following new introductions of DENV from other regions. Due to the relationships between temperature and DENV and temperature and Ae. aegypti, the risk of an outbreak changes throughout the year. Here, we develop and analyze mathematical models for both mosquito population dynamics and …
