Multi-Scale Insar Investigations Of Anthropogenic And Natural Processes In The American Southwest, Emily Jo Graves
Multi-Scale Insar Investigations Of Anthropogenic And Natural Processes In The American Southwest, Emily Jo Graves
Geosciences
Arid regions in the American Southwest undergo measurable surface deformation driven by variations in subsurface fluid pressure, and other natural and anthropogenic processes. These processes range from regional scale aquifer dynamics to local oil and gas wellsite activities. This dissertation produces and then utilizes InSAR-derived average velocity fields and displacement time series to reveal and understand these multi-scale processes, their interactions, and impacts for a portion of the American Southwest. Chapter 1 discusses the climate and natural and anthropogenic processes present in our study area. In Chapter 2, we generate detailed large scale average velocity maps that reveal deformation associated …

Code Crimson Ob: A Lifeline For Maternal Health, Colleen Cowie, Elizabeth Barrera, Leah Williams-Jones, Mercy R. Banaszak, Leonor Ruiz, Arvinder Singh
Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal
Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage (PH) accounts for 12% of maternal deaths in the U.S. and affects approximately 5% of obstetric individuals. Despite available treatments, delays in recognition and response can lead to severe complications or death. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to improve maternal outcomes by implementing Code Crimson OB, a specialized obstetric rapid response team (RRT) for managing maternal hemorrhage.
Methods: An unannounced maternal hemorrhage drill revealed critical delays in mobilizing appropriate personnel. In response, the RRT protocol was revised to include Code Crimson OB, ensuring rapid, coordinated intervention. Hospital-wide education was conducted, and the protocol officially …
Translational Research On Color Vision: From Mechanisms To Performance Enhancement In Diverse Settings, Jewearly Lundby
Translational Research On Color Vision: From Mechanisms To Performance Enhancement In Diverse Settings, Jewearly Lundby
Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the mechanisms and applications for optimizing color vision performance across diverse contexts. In a world where color cues augment critical decisions to optimize performance and safety in transportation (e.g., aviation, railway), military, law enforcement, medical diagnostics, and myriad occupational tasks, deficiencies in color perception pose significant challenges. By uniting four interrelated studies, this work explored intrinsic retinal processes, assistive technologies for deficiencies, and novel pathways that challenge conventional understandings of vision. The research bridged fundamental vision science with applications in occupational settings, low vision rehabilitation, and clinical diagnostics, ultimately aiming to optimize color performance.
The first study …

Israeli Hasbara And The Nba’S Palestine Exception: The Impossibility Of Capitalist “Social Justice”, Chen Chen, Anthony J. Weems, Roc Rochon, Daniel Sailofsky
Sport Management Collection
Sport is a notable site for the Israeli state in its hasbara (public diplomacy, or “explaining”) effort that seeks to normalize the conditions of ethnic cleansing, illegal settlement, and apartheid practices in historic and occupied Palestine. Against the backdrop of the genocide in Gaza and the lack of international sport sanctions against Israeli teams, this paper maps several hasbara activities/attempts featuring the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the last decade. This is a worthwhile case, not least because of the NBA’s self-branding as a socially “progressive” league composed of a primarily Black/African American athletic workforce. Two major observations are made: …

Implications Of Alarm Fatigue And Effectiveness Of Mitigation Strategies In Inpatient Units: A Literature Review, Kinley R. Wojick
Implications Of Alarm Fatigue And Effectiveness Of Mitigation Strategies In Inpatient Units: A Literature Review, Kinley R. Wojick
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background
Current technology in hospitals has allowed alarm notification systems to become faster and more sensitive than ever, enabling nurses to be immediately notified regarding changes in a patient’s condition. These notifications provide nurses with real time information necessary to prioritize interventions and provide the best care for their patients. Though notifications play a crucial role in the nursing process, the constant sounding of repetitive, non-actionable alarms can contribute to desensitization and a reduction in response times known as alarm fatigue.
Purpose
The purpose of this review was to compile reported research examining the effect that various interventions, including education …
Over-Reliance On Aesthetics? The Appearance-Reveals-Character Lay Theory Increases Consumers’ Devaluation Of Unattractive Produce, Shilpa Madan, Krishna Savani, Gita Venkataramani Johar
Over-Reliance On Aesthetics? The Appearance-Reveals-Character Lay Theory Increases Consumers’ Devaluation Of Unattractive Produce, Shilpa Madan, Krishna Savani, Gita Venkataramani Johar
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Approximately 40% of all produce is rejected because it appears unattractive, contributing significantly to food waste. Whereas previous research attributes this devaluation to the ugly-is-bad effect, this research identifies an important moderator of consumers’ reliance on this heuristic: the lay theory that a person’s outer appearance reveals their inner character. Specifically, consumers who believe that people’s appearances reveal their character are less willing to accept unattractive (vs. attractive) produce because they generalize their lay theory to produce and are, thus, more likely to infer that unattractive produce is of lower quality. Consumers who do not hold the lay theory do …

Official U.S. Documentation Of American Perceptions Of Post-Colonial Congo, 1960-1968, Deana D. Patterson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines U.S. perceptions of the Congo after its turbulent independence in 1960 through the lens of Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) document series. Through the famed Congo Crisis, U.S. policymakers portrayed Patrice Lumumba as destabilizing and aligned with Soviet influence. As scholarship has shown, the FRUS documentary record omits details of covert operations that culminated in his assassination. Acknowledging the gaps in this official record, the thesis examines three themes that show how the United States sought to use FRUS to narrate the Congo's independence: the need for U.S. access to Congolese uranium and other natural …
Curvilinear Image Segmentation Using Multiscale Variational U-Net, Rebekah Fortes
Curvilinear Image Segmentation Using Multiscale Variational U-Net, Rebekah Fortes
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Segmentation of curvilinear structures such as water contours, cracks in cement, and vascular networks in biomedical imaging, poses unique challenges due to extreme class imbalance, irregular morphology, low contrast against complex backgrounds, and the need to preserve global connectivity while detecting fine-scale details. We propose a Multiscale Variational U-Net (MSVU-Net) architecture designed specifically to address these challenges. The model integrates multiscale convolutional filters to capture both global context and local detail, while embedding a variational model in the bottleneck layer to enhance structural representation. To mitigate class imbalance and improve fidelity, the network optimizes a hybrid loss function that combines …

Peptoid-Based Molecular Analysis Utilizing High-Speed Molecular Dynamics Methods, In Chul Hwang
Peptoid-Based Molecular Analysis Utilizing High-Speed Molecular Dynamics Methods, In Chul Hwang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Polypeptoids are N-substituted glycine polymers, which differ from peptides in the placement of the side chain being present on the amide nitrogen rather than the backbone Cα. While both peptoids and peptides are composed of linked amino acids, the structural changes resulting from the differing origin of the side chain leads to distinct backbone structure, as well as remove the chirality found in the peptide structure. These differences lead peptoids to have different physiochemical and biological properties, such as being resistant to proteolysis and diverse three-dimensional structures that are not observed in peptides. With the shifting of the …
The Essence Of Black Parenthood Amid Juvenile Justice Contact: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Through Historical Trauma And Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome, Dana M. Wallace
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Traditional psychology was created by defining adaptive and maladaptive behaviors based on Eurocentric cultural norms. As a result, much of the research within the African American family utilizing Eurocentric ideologies and typologies has contributed to themes of inferiority and deficit-deficiency. This study attempts to move away from a deficit-deficiency model that assumes that because of the historical mistreatment of African American adults in this country, African American parents have developed competency deficits in areas necessary for the rearing/socialization process. In centering the African-ness of the Black family and utilizing Historical Trauma theory and Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome as contextual lenses, the …

Researching The Historic Lemon House, West Feliciana Parish: Designating Historic Properties For Inclusive Tourism Planning, Jennie Garcia
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the intersection of planning theory and historic preservation through the context of tourism planning. Using the West Feliciana Tourist Commission’s 2021-205 Strategic Plan as a case study, an exploration of how tourism planning should be integrated within a comprehensive planning framework will be conducted. While both tourism plans and comprehensive plans seek to promote economic development, tourism plans are often standalone and unenforceable documents. The study centers on the Louisiana State University (LSU) Lemon House, a property initially identified as a rare example of a non-plantation yeoman farmer’s homestead with a historical narrative that has remained underexplored. …
Examination Of Features Of Etfs In U.S. And Japan, Jiayuan Tian
Examination Of Features Of Etfs In U.S. And Japan, Jiayuan Tian
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how higher-moment risk and market frictions shape ETF outcomes across two essays. Essay 1 investigates the relationship between ambiguity and coskewness using U.S. equity ETFs. We show that coskewness can reduce—or increase—the measured degree of ambiguity depending on whether investors exhibit aversion to, or preference for, ambiguity. In practice, higher positive coskewness tends to mitigate uncertainty about ETF returns. Size also matters: large ETFs with significant coskewness substantially reduce ambiguity relative to smaller funds, whereas small ETFs often show insignificant reductions or even apparent increases in ambiguity, implying that larger funds are more effective at dampening uncertainty. …

Uncertainty Estimation For Graph-Based Learning In Digital Pathology, Saba Heidari Gheshlaghi, Nasim Yahyasoltani, Masoud Ganji
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
High-resolution digital scans of pathology slides, known as whole slide images (WSIs), have detailed spatial and contextual information for diagnosing cancer. However, the classification performance of WSIs by deep learning models is typically compromised by data with a different distribution, known as out-of-distribution (OOD), resulting in unreliable predictions. Therefore, having a reliable predictive uncertainty estimation is crucial for clinical adoption. This article comprehensively studies graph-based uncertainty estimation for WSI classification using two cutting-edge graph neural network (GNN) architectures: 1) graph attention networks (GAT); and 2) GraphSAGE. In this work, we introduce the first unified multihead GNN framework that leverages GraphSAGE …

Otherwise Than Human: Responsibility In The Wake Of Disaster, An Eco-Deconstructive Response To Climate Catastrophe, James W. Harris
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis will, firstly, assume a line of eco-deconstructive reasoning, which takes as its point of departure from other approaches to the environment the basic premises of deconstruction, which aim to de-center the ontological and epistemological assumptions of Western thought about the subject and language, and apply it to the concept of the human as a distinct and, most importantly, privileged being as this privilege has operated within language and culture, thereby demonstrating how climate catastrophe constitutes a fundamental rupture in traditional ontology. Secondly, I will turn towards the ethics of Emmanuel Levinas, as in present in his God, Death, …

On Solving The Vertical Generalized Linear Complementarity Problem Associated With A Vertical Block P-Matrix, Mark K. Horlu
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In Ebiefung et al. (2017) an algorithm was developed to solve the vertical generalized linear complementarity problem (VGLCP) when the associated matrix is a vertical block P-matrix (VBP). The objective of this study is to implement the algorithm on a large scale using the Python programming language. We also use a Python code to generate test VBP- matrices Ebiefung et al. (2022), and used them to implement the algorithm. On a representative example, every computational step including basis updates, pivot selection, and vector analysis is recorded. The Python implementation exhibits precise convergence. The final results verifying the correctness of the …
A Comparative Analysis Of Statistical And Machine Learning Models With Application In Ai-Powered Stroke Risk Prediction, Megan Mccoy
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Rapid detection of large vessel occlusion (LVO) is critical due to its high mortality and narrow treatment window. Although machine learning (ML) and deep learning tools show promise for LVO prediction, their clinical use is hindered by inconsistent pre-hospital data, variable LVO rates, limited interpretability, and high costs. This study introduces a hybrid neural network (HNN) that integrates classical statistical learning with neural networks to combine interpretability and structure with flexibility and regularization. The model was validated through simulations using NIHSS scores, demographics, and medical history across diverse sample sizes and LVO prevalence rates, and benchmarked against logistic regression, Naive …
Optimizing Xylitol Production: A Molecular And Experimental Study Of Xylose Reductase In Candida Tropicalis, Zackery Neal
Optimizing Xylitol Production: A Molecular And Experimental Study Of Xylose Reductase In Candida Tropicalis, Zackery Neal
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Xylitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as both an artificial sweetener and an anticariogenic agent. Traditional xylitol production relies on harsh chemicals and energy-intensive processes, making microbial fermentation a more sustainable alternative. This study explores the ability of Candida tropicalis to convert D-xylose into xylitol through the enzyme xylose reductase, with a focus on optimizing pH conditions to enhance conversion efficiency. To achieve this, both experimental fermentation and computational molecular dynamics simulations using GROMACS and the pHbuilder tool are employed. By analyzing the enzyme’s stability and structural dynamics across different pH …

Background: Stretching has wide appeal, but there seems to exist some mismatch between its purported applications and what the evidence shows. There is compelling evidence for some stretching applications, but for others, the evidence seems heterogeneous or unsupportive. The discrepancies even affect some systematic reviews, possibly due to heterogeneous eligibility criteria and search strategies. This consensus paper seeks to unify the divergent findings on stretching and its implications for both athletic performance and clinical practices by delivering evidence-based recommendations. Methods: A panel of 20 experts with a blend of practical experience and scholarly knowledge was assembled. The panel meticulously reviewed …

Hamstring Strength And Architectural Properties Are Associated With Running Biomechanics, Nicholas Ripley, Christopher Bramah, Paul Comfort, John Mcmahon
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Applied muscular strain and hamstring strain capacity have a joint interaction on hamstring strain injury (HSI) with modifiable risk factors frequently assessed. However, to date there is limited observations on the interaction between these factors. The purpose of the present study was to observe if spatiotemporal characteristics, running kinematics and muscle activation were related to modifiable risk factors of HSI. Twenty-two competitive team sport athletes (24.7 ± 4.3 years, 1.82 ± 0.07 m, 84.9 ± 8.5 kg) participated whereby the Bicep femoris long head (BFLH) fascicle length assessed via ultrasound and isokinetic eccentric hamstring strength was assessed. With running assessment …
Examination Of Differences Of Similar-Sized Martian Craters At The Simple-Complex Transition As Revealed By High-Resolution Imaging And Stereo-Derived Topography, Lindsey Dorn
Geosciences
Impact craters on Mars have a wide range of morphologies, and the relationship between the mechanics of their formation and their eventual morphologies is still not completely understood. By examining craters within a narrow diameter range, impact energies are constrained to similar values - enabling focused investigation of target properties and their influence on crater excavation and modification. There is a transition from simple bowl-shaped depressions to complex craters with terraced walls and central floor structures with increasing crater diameter. We analyzed target influences on morphology by examining eleven well-preserved craters of varying morphologies in the 7 to 9 km …

Evaluating Utilidor Performance And Ground Temperature Variability In UtqiaġVik, Tate Rachow
Geosciences
Permafrost degradation in Arctic regions poses increasing risks to infrastructure as climate warming accelerates thaw processes, alters hydrology, and deepens the active layer. In Utqiaġvik, Alaska, utilidors— utility conduits—play a vital role in protecting water and wastewater services, yet their thermal performance under changing conditions remains poorly constrained. This thesis evaluates the thermal behavior of the Site U-1 direct buried pipes on Stevenson Street using historical thermistor resistance data converted to temperature, combined with calibrated two- dimensional TEMP/W numerical models. The models incorporate layered backfill materials and polyurethane insulation, while also simulating operational influences of water and wastewater temperatures. Calibration …

Characterizing Magmatic Processes At Pavlof And Augustine Volcanoes, Alaska, Through Changes In Volatile, Melt, And Phenocryst Geochemistry, Valerie Wasser
Geosciences
Alaska is home to 54 historically active volcanoes with eruptions posing not only hazards to life and property but also endangering air traffic and affecting the economy. Volcanic processes are complex, and their investigation requires the application of multidisciplinary tools and perspectives from both geophysics and geology. Petrology and geochemistry are the study of the chemical and mineralogical make up of rocks and can provide insights into mantle, crustal and shallow near-surface magmatic processes for recent and prehistoric eruptions. Here I investigate magmatic processes by examining mineral compositional changes across dissolution surfaces in crystal clots at Augustine Volcano, and changes …
Live High-Train Low Induced Changes In Hemoglobin Mass And The Erythropoietin-Erythroferrone-Hepcidin Axis In Female Endurance Athletes, Titta Kuorelahti, Johanna K. Ihalainen, Vesa Linnamo, Claire Badenhorst, Oona Kettunen, Ritva Mikkonen
Live High-Train Low Induced Changes In Hemoglobin Mass And The Erythropoietin-Erythroferrone-Hepcidin Axis In Female Endurance Athletes, Titta Kuorelahti, Johanna K. Ihalainen, Vesa Linnamo, Claire Badenhorst, Oona Kettunen, Ritva Mikkonen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The effects of a 21-day live high-train low (LHTL) on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and iron demand including the erythropoietin (EPO)-erythroferrone (ERFE)-hepcidin axis and routine iron markers were investigated. Fifteen female endurance athletes completed either 21-day LHTL in normobaric hypoxia (2500 m, ~18 h·day−1) (INT, n = 8) or lived and trained in normoxia (CON, n = 7). Hbmass and resting blood were collected before and after the intervention. An additional blood sample was collected on Day 6 for INT. 21-day LHTL increased Hbmass 3.8% in INT (p < 0.001). EPO increased 35.6% from Day 0 to Day 6 in INT (p = 0.037) and then decreased 42.4% from Day 6 to Day 21 (p = 0.019). In INT, no changes were detected in ERFE or hepcidin, and from the routine iron markers only serum transferrin receptor increased from Day 0 to Day 21 (13.9%, p = 0.013). In CON, no changes were detected in Hbmass or iron markers. In INT, Hbmass and ferritin were positively associated (Day 0 to Day 6, p = 0.005). Thus, hepcidin and ERFE may not provide additional information regarding iron demand following 6- or 21-day LHTL compared to routine iron markers. The relationship between Hbmass and ferritin indicates that adequate ferritin levels are needed during hypoxia to support hematological adaptations.

Objective Chronically elevated circulating lipocalin-2 (LCN2) levels are implicated in poor energy regulation, increased cardio-metabolic disease risk, and poor physical function. Exercise is known to improve these factors, but whether LCN2 is modifiable by exercise is not clear. We examined the effect of acute and chronic exercise on LCN2 levels and whether this relates to glucose regulation, body composition, and physical function. Design and methods Thirty-three middle-aged and older adults (45–84 years, median body mass index 26.21 kg/m2) completed an acute high-intensity interval exercise session (HIIE). Participants were randomized to 4 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or …

We provide firm-level evidence on how politicians’ ideologies shape economic outcomes, using a unique setting of ideological discontinuity in China, transitioning from Maoism to Dengism around 1978. We find that ideological exposure during a politician’s early adulthood has a lasting impact on contemporary firm policies in their city. Firms governed by “Maoist mayors” show greater stakeholder spending, lower pay inequality, and less internationalization compared with those governed by “Dengist mayors.” Further evidence suggests that politicians’ ideologies influence corporate behaviors through nonpolicy channels, and these results cannot be fully explained by selection bias, endogenous matching, or the age of the mayor.

Background: Opioid-related overdose is the leading cause of mortality among individuals recently released from incarceration in the U.S. Naloxone is an FDA-approved opioid antagonist medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. Despite evidence of its acceptability and effectiveness at reducing the risk of opioid overdose death after release from incarceration, only an estimated 25% of US jails provide naloxone upon release. This study examines the effectiveness of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention on enhancing access to overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) in participating jails in Kentucky, New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. Methods: Communities were …
