Measurements Of Water-Film Thickness On Cave Walls And Speleothems, Alexandre Honiat, Salaheddine Skali-Lami, François Bourges, Bruno Lartiges

International Journal of Speleology

The water-film that coats cave walls and speleothems is a key player for the regulation of cave microclimate and the control of speleothem growth. In this paper, we demonstrate the capability of a confocal optical sensor to quantitatively measure on-site the rapid variations of water-film thickness when dripping, active condensation, or dryness occur on walls of various caves. Results obtained from a sample of four prehistoric caves and one stalagmite cave from Southwest France, indicate that the measurable thickness of water-films is generally in the 25-70 µm range for cave walls and reaches 200-300 µm on the horizontal plane of …

Conversational Agent For Orchestrating Physical Fulfillment Of Generative Ai Outputs, Lance Nanek Dec 2025

Conversational Agent For Orchestrating Physical Fulfillment Of Generative Ai Outputs, Lance Nanek

Defensive Publications Series

The creation of digital assets using generative machine learning models can be disconnected from the process of producing a corresponding physical object, potentially involving manual file transfers between separate platforms. The systems and methods describe a conversational agent that can orchestrate a digital-to-physical fulfillment pipeline. This agent can parse user dialogue to distinguish between creative prompts for generating a digital asset and commands for its physical production. Upon receiving a fulfillment request, an orchestration engine can analyze the asset to select a suitable fabrication method and a production partner, which may include third-party vendors or a user’s local hardware. This …

Countersink Tribometry On Formed Can Ends: A Geometry-Aware Friction And Wear Test Method, Eric Norton, Juraj Liska Dec 2025

Countersink Tribometry On Formed Can Ends: A Geometry-Aware Friction And Wear Test Method, Eric Norton, Juraj Liska

Defensive Publications Series

Formed beverage can ends present a small‑radius countersink where coating lubricity and integrity strongly influence panel fracture risk, yet there is no widely used, geometry‑specific post‑form friction test. Here we provide a practical test method that addresses this gap by using a precision tribometer (e.g., an Rtec MFT5000) fitted with custom fixturing that mounts a can end concentrically on a rotating stage and positions a 1/8 inch (3.175 mm) spherical ball on a pin set at 45 degrees to contact a defined locus on the countersink. The setup supports both rotational motion at controlled revolutions per minute (RPM) and linear …

The Legal Effects Of Judicial Judgments Under Saudi Law –A Comparative Study–, Fahad Ali Abdullah Alhassun Dec 2025

The Legal Effects Of Judicial Judgments Under Saudi Law –A Comparative Study–, Fahad Ali Abdullah Alhassun

UB Journal for Humanities

This study examines the legal effects of judicial judgments under Saudi Law, focusing on the legal consequences that influence the parties’ legal positions and the jurisdiction of courts. The importance of this topic lies in the fact that judicial judgments constitute the primary instrument through which the judiciary performs its essential role of resolving disputes, ensuring justice, and stabilizing legal transactions. Studying the effects of judgments is therefore a natural extension of their fundamental role, particularly regarding the principles of jurisdiction exhaustion and res judicata, which serve as the foundation for preventing contradictory judgments and ensuring their stability. The research …

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in various fields, including the translation of signs within linguistic landscapes. This field-based study investigates the performance of AI tools, namely, Google Gemini and DeepSeek, in translating culture-specific terms (CSTs). To this end, Arabic monolingual signs at tourist sites in Aseer region in Saudi Arabia were documented and a comparative content analysis approach was employed to evaluate the accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and contextual relevance of the AI-generated translations. These translations were then compared to human translations using the same criteria designed for independent human evaluation. The findings indicated that Gemini consistently outperformed DeepSeek …

Filling In The Gaps: How The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Can Enhance Protections For H-1b Visa Holders, Mahi Patel Dec 2025

Filling In The Gaps: How The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Can Enhance Protections For H-1b Visa Holders, Mahi Patel

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

H-1B Specialty Occupations Visas allow numerous foreign nationals to obtain a pathway for entry into the United States through their hard-earned efforts and specialized skills. After meeting stringent requirements and completing complex processes, holders of H-1B visas may begin working in America. Unfortunately, when these individuals come to the land of opportunity, they encounter a harsh reality of employment: the incessant discriminatory abuse of H-1B visa holders by their employers. H-1B employees endure severe working conditions, long hours, unattainable deadlines, wage disparities, and racial biases as they navigate an unknown nation. Employers tend to exploit H-1B workers because these visa …

Disclosures, Disclaimers, And Disinformation Advertising, Areeb Asif Dec 2025

Disclosures, Disclaimers, And Disinformation Advertising, Areeb Asif

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Every regular internet user in the United States has been exposed to fake news at some point. Most of them, if not all, would agree that this problem needs a solution. Nevertheless, even as fake news has taken on unforeseen prominence in recent years, very little concrete action has been taken to curb its impact on American society. Some scholars have chalked this up to the Supreme Court’s expansive conception of the First Amendment, which makes it incredibly challenging to regulate political speech. Others posit that the problem is Section 230, which allows platforms to profit from fake news without …

Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano Dec 2025

Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Spanish-language media alongside its equivalent English-language counterpart, assumingly operate with reporting facts truthfully. However, no studies have compared the accuracy of equitable reporting between English and Spanish-language news, particularly television newscasts. Limited existing research claims that differences, such as the structure of news stories and their placement in a broadcast, may skew a narrative for those who prefer to absorb Spanish-language news in comparison to those who absorb English-language news. In this study, through use of mixed methods, U.S. market’s English and Spanish broadcast news-affiliated stations are examined to draw conclusions on whether or not there are differences in news …

Covid-19 Vaccine Acceptance Among People Who Smoke In Rural Southwest Georgia: Perspectives And Influencing Factors, Shadé Owolabi, Helen Singer, Katherine Reilly, Łucja T. Bundy Ma-Edm, J.K. Veluswamy, Carla Berg, Regine Haardörfer, James Hotz, Ajay Gehlot, Michelle Kegler

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: The COVID-19 vaccine is a critical tool in reducing COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, vaccine hesitancy is an ongoing public health challenge, especially in certain geographic areas and sub-populations. This study assessed factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine uptake and hesitancy among individuals who smoke in rural communities in southwest Georgia, one of the first COVID-19 “hot spots” in the U.S.

Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews (n=23) using a semi-structured interview guide, informed by the Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM), that assessed vaccine-related behavior, intention to be vaccinated, perceived risk, social norms, attitudes, and environmental barriers and facilitators …

Evidence: Evidence supporting this project emphasized that structured staff education, strong communication, …

Experimental And Theoretical Characterization Of Molten Salt Thermal Conductivity, Jacob C. Numbers Dec 2025

Experimental And Theoretical Characterization Of Molten Salt Thermal Conductivity, Jacob C. Numbers

Theses and Dissertations

Molten salts form an ideal heat transfer fluid for advanced energy generation systems, including molten salt reactors (MSR). Accurate characterization of molten salt thermal conductivity is needed to confidently predict transient thermal behavior and optimize salt properties. Measurements are hindered by salts' challenging material properties, which---in the case of the needle probe device---induced unaccounted physical changes that limited its accuracy and repeatability. Sparse thermal conductivity data in general is exacerbated by a limited fundamental understanding of molecular energy transfer in liquids. This work extends the experimental capacity for compositional studies using the needle probe and proposes a theoretical model for …

Actionable Insights From The Liahona 1, Yoshihiko Ariizumi Dec 2025

Actionable Insights From The Liahona 1, Yoshihiko Ariizumi

Spiritual Proficiency

This article is based on data extracted from Liahona articles, with approximately ten pages of that data processed in two distinct ways. First, the principles were synthesized into five key concepts along with their explanations. Second, specific action plans were created to make these explanations more practical.

The original data exceeded 350 pages of Japanese text, resulting in a total of 37 different summarized sets (or themes). What is fascinating is that, while a certain amount of conceptual overlap is expected, intriguing new perspectives constantly emerge. Therefore, I highly recommend reviewing all 37 sets repeatedly (only a portion of which …

Development And Validation Of 2nn-Meam Interatomic Potential For Sc And Al-Sc Alloys Thermodynamics Solidification And Intermetallic Ordering, Avik Mahata

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a second-nearest-neighbor Modified Embedded Atom Method (2NN–MEAM) potential for Scandium (Sc) and Aluminum-Scandium (Al–Sc) alloys that unifies cohesive, thermodynamic, and solidification behavior within a single transferable framework. The Sc component accurately reproduces cohesive energy, lattice constants, defect energetics, and the experimental melting point obtained from two-phase coexistence, demonstrating reliable description of both hcp and liquid phases. The Al–Sc binary interaction parameters were fitted using the L12–Al3Sc reference and benchmarked against first-principles and calorimetric data. The potential reproduces the strong negative formation enthalpy of Al3Sc (–0.45 eV atom−1), correct relative stability …

Who Gets Remembered? Structural Barriers In The National Register Of Historic Places, Yuha Jung, Lauren Smith Madden Dec 2025

Who Gets Remembered? Structural Barriers In The National Register Of Historic Places, Yuha Jung, Lauren Smith Madden

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This article examines the systemic barriers within the National Register of Historic Places, established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, that have contributed to the underrepresentation of marginalized communities in historic preservation. Despite the United States’ diverse cultural heritage, only an estimated 3% to 10% of sites listed on the National Register reflect histories associated with racial and ethnic minority groups. Through a qualitative analysis of legislative history, federal regulations, nomination processes, and governance structures, this study identifies how key criteria such as “significance” and “integrity” have reinforced exclusionary practices. These criteria consistently prioritize architectural and tangible heritage …
