The meteoric rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to multiple architectural schemas to handle the data these devices create. Edge-enhancement is a technique where groups of IoT report to a median layer to aggregate the data before relaying to the endpoint. These edges also open opportunities to perform more operations to ensure devices are behaving properly before committing the data to long term storage. By interconnecting these edges with a technology like blockchain, it is possible to have an interconnected and responsive system to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS) of the IoT devices within the architecture …

Ground Testing Of Cryogenic Environments In Vacuum Conditions, Lucas A. Scott Jan 2025

Ground Testing Of Cryogenic Environments In Vacuum Conditions, Lucas A. Scott

Masters Theses

The environment in the vacuum of space is unforgiving and ever-changing. Not only facing the lack of a protective atmosphere, but powerful radiation and extreme temperature ranges as well. Equipment destined for space must be hardened to withstand them. Just launching satellites that are theoretically able to survive these conditions is unfeasibly costly in the event of failure. Because of this, spacecraft must be tested in a simulated environment that can match the harsh climate in space. Therefore, it is the goal of the Gas and Plasma Dynamics Lab's (GPDL) to test and prove specific methods of recreating these conditions. …

Auto-Tuning And Applications Of Transient Voltage Suppressor Models In Full-Wave Simulations, Daniel Peter Szanto Jan 2025

Auto-Tuning And Applications Of Transient Voltage Suppressor Models In Full-Wave Simulations, Daniel Peter Szanto

Masters Theses

System efficient electrostatic design (SEED) combines full-wave geometry information with SPICE models of non-linear protection devices, typically transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes, to allow optimization and validation of electrostatic design (ESD) protection early in the design process. TVS models have previously been developed which may be used in SPICE simulation tools like Keysight ADS, but these models could not be used directly in full-wave simulation tools like CST Studio. A process was developed for converting existing ADS models of TVS devices to a form that can be used within a CST full wave/SPICE hybrid simulation. Three TVS models were converted …

Shifting Attention: Assessing Antennular ‘Gaze’ In The Hermit Crab Pagurus Bernhardus, Ari Drummond, John Spicer, Lucy Turner, Alexander Wilson, Mark Briffa

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Attention (focused information gathering) is crucial for many cognitive processes. Traditionally dichotomised as reflexive or voluntary, behavioural research often relies on vision for assessments of attention. However, invertebrate information acquisition often utilises chemosensation or mechanosensation, potentially limiting the efficacy of a vision-based approach. We examined attention in Pagurus bernhardus hermit crabs, using antennules (the crustacean first antennae) as indicators of attentional shifts. Considering a change in flicking direction as analogous to a shift in gaze, we examined if hermit crabs show evidence of reflexive or voluntary attention. We exposed crabs to a chemosensory stimulus while manipulating factors influencing vulnerability (i.e., …

Mangrove ecosystems face significant threats from climate change and human activities. In West Benin, the invasive grass Paspalum vaginatum disrupts sedimentation and hydrology, creating anoxic conditions and nutrient imbalances. To address this, we implemented a cost-effective restoration strategy focused on hydrological repair, engaging local communities to excavate 26 artificial channels and clear 19 existing ones, restoring tidal flow to 30 ha of degraded mangrove forest. Of this, 20 ha were planted with Rhizophora racemosa propagules, while 10 ha remained unplanted due to unsuitable micro-topographic conditions. This intervention, costing $1394.3 USD per hectare, adjusted sediment levels to match natural micro-topography, enabling …

The antenna operates at 2.34 and 5.65 GHz bands, with a diameter smaller than λ/2 and a profile of λ/100 , where λ is the wavelength at the lower band. The spherical modes theory is used to discuss the beam-steering and dual-band characteristics, demonstrating continuous beam-scanning performance across the entire horizontal plane. These properties are then studied to realize AoA estimation, where the performance is tested in free space and with a multilayer phantom. Overall, it is demonstrated that a …

A High Balance-Ratio Dipole With Low Passive Intermodulation Distortion, Kok Loon Wong, Max J. Ammann Jan 2025

A High Balance-Ratio Dipole With Low Passive Intermodulation Distortion, Kok Loon Wong, Max J. Ammann

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

A wideband grid dipole with low passive intermodulation (PIM) distortion, low profile, and low cost is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) cellular base station applications. The proposed dipole with a high ratio of unbalanced to balanced current can be achieved by introducing a circular loop at the center of a dipole arm to suppress the unwanted current traveling from the dipole arm to outer coaxial shield. As a result, the profile can be reduced from 0.25λ 0to 0.19 λ 0 due to a 6-dB improvement in PIM performance. The third-order PIM distortion <-151 dBc (at 2 × 43 dBm carriers) is obtained over the operating bandwidth. The 14-dB impedance bandwidth is 43% over the frequency range of 639-989 MHz.
