The rapid rise of immersive technologies has placed metaverse-based classrooms at the center of higher education innovation. Yet, little is known about how students in low-income contexts perceive and adopt these platforms, particularly when motivation, career goals, and financial pressures intersect. This study develops and tests a student-focused model that integrates intrinsic motivation, future time perspective, career relevance, and financial stress to explain behavioral intention toward metaverse adoption. A survey of 292 university students in Jordan—a lower-income national setting—was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results showed all hypothesized paths were significant. Future time perspective and career …

This study is the first to compare deep learning models for rainfall prediction across several Jordanian cities representing diverse climates using 11 years of recorded climate data, something that previous studies have not addressed in the Jordanian context. The climate records for four Jordanian cities (Amman, Irbid, Karak, and Ajloun) were recorded hourly. The data was divided into training sets (80%) and test sets (20%), with and without the application of correlation analysis, feature selection, and data standardization steps applied. Three neural network models, Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Convolutional Neural Network-Recurrent Neural Network (CNN-RNN) were …
Making The Jump: A Self-Study Of The Implementation Of Gamification And Student Discussion In Middle School Mathematics, John Pauly
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Middle school mathematics teaching is a complex practice that incorporates both cognitive and emotional factors (Sen, 2022). Students must have permission to get stuck and unstuck in their thinking while critically considering their approaches (Kapp, 2016), along with opportunities to engage in decision-making, deep reasoning, and discussions about mathematics (Stein et al., 1996). Gamification and game-based learning can place students in an environment where discussion, collaboration and perseverance are highly valued in overcoming challenges and achieving common goals (Kapp, 2016).
This qualitative self-study reflects on the journey of John Pauly, a middle school mathematics teacher, told through his experiences and …

Accurately Constituting Robust Interfaces For High-Performance High-Energy Lithium Metal Batteries, Kevin V. Carballo, Meetesh Singh, Xiangbo Meng
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
High-energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have received ever-increasing interest. Among them, coupling lithium metal (Li) with nickel-rich material, LiNixMnyCozO2 (NMCs, x ≥ 0.6, x + y + z = 1), is promising because Li anodes enable an extremely high capacity (∼3860 mA h g−1) and the lowest redox potential (−3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode), while NMCs can achieve a much higher capacity of ∼200 mA h g−1 and lower cost than those of LiCoO2. However, the resultant Li‖NMC cells have been hindered from commercialization due to a …

Importance Of Library Metrics And Effective Methods Of Communication With Provosts, Katy Zane
Importance Of Library Metrics And Effective Methods Of Communication With Provosts, Katy Zane
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Provosts and librarians share a common goal of needing to measure library activity in such a way that appropriately conveys how it contributes to the institution’s campus initiatives and strategic planning. The goal of this research was to determine how best to analyze these activities through agreed upon metrics and preferred communication styles. By combining the two aspects of analytical metrics and communication methods, this research would provide a common ground that both provosts and librarians could build upon for the future growth and development of the library.

The Literary Field: Agriculture And The Ecological Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century French Novel, Abigail Fields
The Literary Field: Agriculture And The Ecological Imagination In The Nineteenth-Century French Novel, Abigail Fields
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The Literary Field: Agriculture and the Ecological Imagination in the Nineteenth-Century French Novel argues that notions of the farmer and land developed their modern meanings in France in the nineteenth century. Ideas about agriculture fed into the formation of an environmental imaginary and vice versa, resulting in the co-construction of these concepts. To build this case, I develop a method I call agro-ecocriticism, which draws on literary criticism, materialist cultural studies, and ecology to identify flows of agricultural thought and actors within forms of cultural production. Particularly important in this reading method is a new attention to setting. In my …

Experiences Of Young Adults With Mild To Moderate Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In Transition Programs, Marjorie Cortico Ramirez
JWU Dissertations & Theses
Difficulties with socialization, obtaining employment, dependency on family, altered levels of stress, and community integration are factors that significantly challenge young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) upon exiting high school, and participating in transition programs (Athamanah et al., 2020; Biggs & Carter, 2016; Foley et al., 2012; Butterworth et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2023). Transition programs offer young adults ages 18-22 an opportunity to obtain the life skills and vocational training needed to better prepare them for employment, social interactions, and independent living (Curtis et al., 2009). Literature on post- school transition focuses on elevating the voices …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Transparency of information and audit quality are crucial for the efficiency and stability of the market. The disclosure of key audit matters has become an essential part of audit reports, yet there remains widespread debate regarding the role of key audit matters. This study finds a significant positive correlation between the extent of key audit matter disclosures and audit quality. Detailed disclosures can enhance information transparency, strengthen auditors’ sense of responsibility, and reduce information asymmetry. However, over-templating may have negative effects on audit quality, leading to a lack of personalized judgment by auditors. Additionally, this paper suggests that the partner …

European Studies Department Faculty Publications
This commentary article explores audience responses to the European Commission's use of memetic content on its Instagram page. Using inductive thematic analysis, this study explained how discursive contestation was manifested in commenters' opposing views about the institution's use of memes. The discourse historical approach elucidated how comments drew upon contextual factors, such as: (1) the humorous and juvenile nature of memes; (2) current events and Europe's role in them; and (3) erroneous understandings about the EU's structure and capabilities. In terms of its contribution to the academic literature, this commentary article's focus on memes as a form of government communication …
European Digital Diplomacy And The Sino-Philippine Territorial Disputes In The South China Sea, Manuel R. Enverga
European Digital Diplomacy And The Sino-Philippine Territorial Disputes In The South China Sea, Manuel R. Enverga
European Studies Department Faculty Publications
This chapter examines the digital diplomatic articulations produced by European states about the Sino-Philippine territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Using social media data from the official accounts of diplomatic missions in the Philippines, this chapter presents data showing that European countries did not engage in concerted action with regard to the conflict between the Philippine and Chinese governments. It is argued that the heterogeneity in their online activities can be explained by the imperative to balance a complex set of priorities, including alignment with the post-World War II rules-based international order or their preference not to antagonize the …

Signs Of Democratic Resilience Following Aotearoa New Zealand’S March 15th Mosque Attacks, Claire Fitzpatrick, Emily Beausoleil
Signs Of Democratic Resilience Following Aotearoa New Zealand’S March 15th Mosque Attacks, Claire Fitzpatrick, Emily Beausoleil
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Political responses to extremist attacks and other forms of social trauma might be deemed ‘resilient’ insofar as they restore order and security but can undermine democratic ideals and practices. This article offers an evaluative framework for democratic resilience to make sense of public discourse in the aftermath of extremist attacks. We argue that a democratically resilient response entails five necessary dimensions, each of which is required for dialogue across difference capable of ‘working through’ social trauma within the democratic polity. We then apply this framework to analyse the March 15 2019 mosque attacks in Aotearoa New Zealand, using mixed methods …
Analysis Of Safety Investment : Economic Benefit In Arctic Shipping To Shipping Companies And The Arctic Coastal States, Junjie Wan
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
Global warming severely affects the Arctic region, including ice coverage and thickness. In contrast, it allows unprecedented navigation opportunities for more extended periods each year, attracting maritime stakeholders because of the potential distance reduction compared to shipping corridor routes. However, mitigating Arctic navigation hazards requires safety investments, especially from shipowners and Arctic coastal states. When allocating limited resources to safety, decision-makers should efficiently prioritize their investments. This research aims to determine how to optimize shipping companies and Arctic coastal states’ safety investments. It begins with a comprehensive analysis of safety investments and safety economic benefits in Arctic shipping. Then, an …

A Discourse Analysis Of The Development Of Institutional Compliance Mechanisms At The International Maritime Organization, Rebecca Pskowski
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) plays a pivotal and essential role in international maritime governance, providing a forum for nation states to develop and agree to international standards for maritime safety and security and the protection of the marine environment. IMO is widely perceived to be one of the most successful universal international organizations (IOS), because of the high technical quality of the conventions and other legal instruments it develops, and the near-universal acceptance of most of those instruments. IMO could be seen as an exemplar of the "technical" specialized United Nations agency, where nation-states set aside politics to agree …

Anisotropic Third-Harmonic Vortex Beam Generation With Ultrathin Germanium Arsenide Fork Gratings, Jayanta Deka, Jie Gao, Xiaodong Yang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Optical vortices have the tremendous potential to increase data capacity by leveraging the extra degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum. On the other hand, anisotropic 2D materials are promising building blocks for future integrated polarization-sensitive photonic and optoelectronic devices. Here, highly anisotropic third-harmonic optical vortex beam generation is demonstrated with fork holograms patterned on ultrathin 2D germanium arsenide flakes. It is shown that the anisotropic nonlinear vortex beam generation can be achieved independent of the fork grating orientation with respect to the crystallographic orientation. Furthermore, 2D fork hologram is designed to generate multiple optical vortices having different topological charges …
