Addressing Intergenerational Retention And Workplace Satisfaction Factors With A Workshop For Nurse Leaders, Elizabeth Labish
Addressing Intergenerational Retention And Workplace Satisfaction Factors With A Workshop For Nurse Leaders, Elizabeth Labish
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Nursing is a multigenerationally diverse workforce, with up to five generations (Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z) contributing simultaneously (Gerhardt et. al, 2022). Each generation holds varied work preferences and retention drivers, which manifest as unique drivers of preventable turnover. Leaders can reduce turnover and its associated costs by cultivating a multi-generationally preferred work environment (Koehler & Olds, 2022). The purpose of this project was to deliver a workshop for nurse leaders to improve their knowledge about leading multigenerational workforces. Following literature review, A 2.5 hour in-person workshop was created and delivered at a community hospital. The …
Geographies Of Trauma And Healing: Resistance, Resilience, ‘Ustawi Wa’, And The Lived Experiences Of African Women Refugees From The Ehagl Region In Canada, Rosemary Njeri Kimani-Dupuis Dr., Rosemary Kimani-Dupuis
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation explores the lived experiences of African women refugees from the East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes (EHAGL) region resettled in Ontario, Canada, with particular focus on the complex intersections of trauma, resilience, and healing within global refugee governance. It asks: How do the gendered and spatial dynamics of refugee protection and Canadian settlement systems sustain structural violence against African women refugees, and how do their transnational experiences challenge and reshape dominant frameworks of care, well-being, and institutional response?
Through a multi-scalar analysis—macro (legal governance frameworks), meso (institutional actors), and micro (women’s narratives)—the study explores how trauma …

Nontraditional Students Enrolling In Online Education: Assessing Outcomes And Barriers To Success, Kua Vang
Nontraditional Students Enrolling In Online Education: Assessing Outcomes And Barriers To Success, Kua Vang
Master's Projects
Online education has significantly reshaped how colleges and universities define and evaluate academic achievement. In March 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. government enforced social distancing regulations that affected operational continuity for higher education institutions. The need to transition from traditional classroom instruction to online was unavoidable. Institutions were not prepared, however, and their shortcomings in providing high-quality online learning for students were exposed. The inadequacy can be due to higher education institutions decade-long mindset of seeing online education as a less credible alternative. As a result, institutions are more eager than ever before to invest …

Surveillance Report: Che-Wei Hsu, Che-Wei Hsu
Theses
Face ID: A Surveil of Che-Wei Hsu is a lens based artistic investigation and experience into the nature of surveillance in modern society. Through performance, photography, and installation, my work explores the dynamics between being watched and watching, questioning how surveillance influences human behavior and identity. In my art practice, I think about the behavior that people would not do in front of other people or violate the social norm and perform in the public as a way to experience how surveillance influences how we act in the public, for example eating a sandwich on the ladder in front of …
Fishing For Empathy: Fishbowls And Neurorhetorics For Mitigating Bias, Prejudice, And Hate In Human Relations, Shalina Jasmine Akins, Steven Ray Krivanek
Fishing For Empathy: Fishbowls And Neurorhetorics For Mitigating Bias, Prejudice, And Hate In Human Relations, Shalina Jasmine Akins, Steven Ray Krivanek
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
This study explored bias, prejudice, and hate from anthropological, neurobiological, and social-cognitive psychological lenses to better understand dehumanization of the “other.” The concept of neurorhetorics was introduced as a framework for understanding and mitigating our natural propensity to disparage and ridicule that which is not us. Neurorhetorics was explored as a means to mitigate bias, build bridges, and promote empathy and understanding across any and all differences. The Fishbowl model of communication was used as an intervention framework and this study examined its efficacy as an alternative to traditional rhetorical methods of discourse such as interviews, debates, and focus groups …
"Baby-Steps For Baby Business": Diverse Market, Challenges, And Workable International Regulation For Cross-Border Commercial Surrogacy, Ellene Ko
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The note examines the rapid growth of transnational commercial surrogacy as a multibillion-dollar industry, driven by assisted reproductive technologies and fertility tourism. It highlights the legal conflicts and challenges arising from the patchwork of international surrogacy regulations, including issues of citizenship, exploitation, and enforcement of cross-border contracts. The analysis advocates for an international convention to establish a clear legal framework for transnational surrogacy, emphasizing the need for shared responsibility between global and national oversight bodies to prevent exploitation and ensure ethical practices.
What Are Younger ("Millennial" Aged 24 - 40) Secondary Religious Education Teachers In Sydney Catholic Schools Understanding And Experiencing In Terms Of A Call To Witness, Mark Smith
Theses
Teachers of Religious Education in Australian Catholic secondary schools, like teachers of all key learning areas, are expected to have specialist knowledge of the content being taught and skills in contemporary pedagogy for high-quality learning. They also have an additional expectation – they are called to witness to the Catholic faith and Catholic teachings as they teach about them. Or at least they are in theory. However, in a contemporary Australian society that is becoming increasingly non-religious, secular, pluralistic, and religiously diverse is this call to witness still tenable or appropriate? Research on Catholic education has called for a greater …
A Public For The Problem: Vocabularies Of Belonging At The Climate Precipice, Louisa Stredwick
A Public For The Problem: Vocabularies Of Belonging At The Climate Precipice, Louisa Stredwick
Theses
This study proposes the central concepts of belonging and vocabulary to critically analyse and recompose current approaches to more-than-human relationship that are inadequate and counterproductive. Contemporary vocabularies of belonging are inadequate because they fail to account for the practicalities of an expansive human and more-than-human ‘we’, and they are underpinned by extractivist or idealist logics. They are counterproductive because they carry embedded dualisms that often directly counter intended messages of inherent relationality. A largely theoretical work, the thesis is informed by a field philosophy approach in the Environmental Humanities, working alongside the Martuwarra (Fitzroy) River, in North-Western Australia, and its …
Hegel Meets The Corleones: Critical Racket Theory And The American Crime Family, Gary Shapiro
Hegel Meets The Corleones: Critical Racket Theory And The American Crime Family, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This essay interrogates Frankfurt School “racket theory.” While sympathetic to its claim that the most pervasive form of hegemony is the hierarchical and authoritarian group, the paper explores the School’s apparent blind spot in underestimating the crime family’s resurgent significance (e.g., the Trumps or culture industry sagas from The Godfather to Ozark). Early racket theory was limited by Horkheimer’s intensified version of Hegel’s concept of the modern family, its nuclear form and early dissolution. A brief genealogy of the US crime film—from early 1930s individual rogue gangsters to the present—confirms the need to rethink this aspect of racket theory.

The (Im)Possibility Of Separating Rabbinic Texts Into Literary Genres: Form Analysis And Text Linguisticslysis And Text Linguistics, Rivka Ulmer
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper analyzes rabbinic homiletic texts from the perspective of form analysis in combination with text-linguistic theories. My study indicates that, from the perspective of functional considerations, it is not meaningful to lift small literary forms from a coherent text that depends on a co-text to create meaning. Additionally, the concepts of genre and parable need to be abandoned and replaced by text-type and mashal. The form-analytical description of rabbinic homilies is based on research performed at the Institute of Judaic Studies in Frankfurt am Main. The text-linguistic concepts are based on strict formalizations that demonstrate textual relations. These theories were …
The Impact Of Whiteness Among Black College Students' Racial Identity, La'quida Reneé Smith
The Impact Of Whiteness Among Black College Students' Racial Identity, La'quida Reneé Smith
Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology
Although the impact of racism is well-documented in both conceptual and empirical research on the experiences of Black college students, some scholars have pointed out that many of the negative, race-based experiences these students face on college campuses extend beyond overt acts of racism (e.g., individual racism, institutional racism; Gusa, 2010; Hargons et al., 2022; Ingram & Wallace, 2019; Le et al., 2020; Smith et al., 2011; Tyler et al., 2022). Whiteness has been identified as an overt factor shaping the lived experiences of Black individuals (Leonardo, 2009; Matias, 2016; Tyler et al., 2022) and is, therefore, believed to impact …

Pressure about body perception impacts well-being, and adopting holistic wellness promotes lasting health. The purpose of this study was to explore how body perceptions relate to holistic wellness by modeling a holistic wellness mirror based on the human triad of the body, mind, and spirit. The survey research method and convenient sampling were used, yielding 317 respondents from college classes and social media platforms. The survey was a combination of body perception scales and questions about holistic wellness: healthy eating, happiness, and religiosity. Analysis of variance results indicate that body appreciation and neutrality are significantly higher for individuals with higher …
Analysis Of The Menstrual Product Initiative At The University Of Northern Iowa, Catrina Marie Tounjian
Analysis Of The Menstrual Product Initiative At The University Of Northern Iowa, Catrina Marie Tounjian
Honors Program Theses
Period poverty is defined as the inability to access menstrual products or adequate feminine hygiene due to economic vulnerability. This ultimately can cause social, political, and educational barriers. In the USA, 1 in 5 menstruating students will miss school since they are unable to obtain period products. The relationship between period poverty and educational disparities is not well understood but needs to be addressed to ensure equitable education. The provision of free menstrual products in public restrooms has slowly become more prevalent as a potential interventional approach. At the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls, Iowa, there is …

Language As Privilege: Socioeconomic Status And The Politics Of Foreign Language Learning, Brenda Koumondji
Honors Program Theses
This study investigates the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and foreign language learning among young adult learners. Much research suggests that parental education level, household income, and access to educational resources significantly shape language learning attitudes and behaviors. However, United States scholars have lagged in this analysis. Through a mixed-methods research approach, this study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative data to gather comprehensive insights on how SES influences foreign language acquisition, motivation, and advantages. Findings reveal that students with higher SES backgrounds consistently report greater access to language learning resources and significantly higher proficiency levels. While parental education might not …

How Do Documentaries Depict The Experiences Of Juveniles In Correctional Facilities?, Emma Decker
How Do Documentaries Depict The Experiences Of Juveniles In Correctional Facilities?, Emma Decker
Honors Program Theses
The juvenile justice system is an entity that is separate from the criminal justice system, with the intended purpose of accommodating the unique needs of juveniles. This system has the primary goals of rehabilitation and punishment, with an emphasis on rehabilitation. Most of the general population has had little to no contact with the juvenile justice system.. In order to fill this gap, a great portion of the public relies on media representation to build up a foundation of knowledge. This can include gaining information from news sources as well as crime based tv shows and documentaries. Little research has …

Attitudes Toward Juvenile Offenders: How Juvenile Justice Personnel Perceive Juvenile Recidivism, Morgan Barnette
Honors Program Theses
This study examined the relationship between juvenile justice personnel and the predictive factors of juvenile recidivism. With rising juvenile crime rates across the country, investigation into the causes of juvenile recidivism has also risen. However, not much research has been dedicated to the way juvenile justice personnel view juvenile recidivism. This study surveyed a sample of six juvenile justice personnel including judges, a lawyer, a probation officer, and a detention officer. The survey explored the types of crimes juveniles are perceived to be committing, the frequency of interactions with repeat offenders juvenile justice personnel are having in their respective professions, …

Developing An Ethics Curriculum For Humanitarian Research And Practice: A Special Project Mph Thesis, Nour Nedal Al Zouabi
Public Health Theses
Despite increasing ethical challenges in humanitarian crises, most Master of Public Health (MPH) programs offer limited, focused ethics training. Humanitarian emergencies, including armed conflict, mass displacement, pandemics, and climate-related disasters, challenge traditional ethical frameworks, exposing gaps in law, codes of conduct, and philosophical models. This thesis proposes a 13-week graduate course that integrates public health, international humanitarian law, field-based humanitarian practice, research methodology, and moral philosophy to equipe future public health leaders with ethical decision-making processes and skills to navigate complex dilemmas. Through critical engagement with scholarly literature, case studies (Ebola vaccine trials, refugee-camp research), simulations, and guest-speaker dialogues, students …

Introduction: Advanced age is a primary risk factor for many chronic diseases and conditions; however, age-related immune dysregulation is not well understood. Animal models, particularly those that resemble human age-related physiological changes, are needed to better understand immunosenescence and to improve health outcomes. Here, we explore the utility of the olive baboon (Papio anubis) in studying age-related changes to the immune system and understanding mechanisms of immunosenescence.
Methods: We examined immune cell, inflammatory responses, cytokines, and cortisol levels using hematology and flow cytometry, mitogen stimulation, multiplex cytokine assay, and cortisol immunoassay.
Results and Discussion: Our results reveal significant age effects …

Background: Elephants provide valuable insight into how early-life adverse events (ELAEs) associate with animal health and welfare because they can live to advanced ages, display extensive cognitive and memory capabilities, and rely heavily on social bonds. Although it is known that African savanna elephants that experienced ELAEs, such as being orphaned due to human activities, have altered behavioral outcomes, little is known regarding the physiological consequences associated with those stressors.
Methods: We compared fecal glucocorticoid (fGCM) and thyroid (fT3) metabolites as well as body condition scores (BCS) in rescued and rehabilitated orphaned (early-dry season: n = 20; late-dry season: n …
